71 VW oil strainer and fix for 6 MM slipped threads in engine case

  • Installation of oil strainer in a 1971 SB engine case. Fix for 6MM slipped thread in engine case. Material needed - toque 🔧, torque specs. 6 MM end cap toque to 5 Ft #, and sump plate drain plug toque to 18 Ft#. Oil strainer, gaskets (2), 6 copper washers for 6 mm studs. 1 copper washer for oil drain plug. 8MM x 6 MM reducing stud. Drill bit , tap set, and cutting oil . RTV or permeated is optional. Remarks drilling and tapping must be done prior installation of the reducing stud. Thanks.

    You can achieve 5 lbs with a nut driver. Or a 1/4 drive ratchet. Just snug em up. You can always sinch more if they drip.

      Brian Chisnell yes you can . But you cannot guarantee they all will be at the exact 5 foot pound. I prefer to be safe than sorry. And by using the toque wrench; at least I know the bolts are all properly torque to specs. Believe me it makes a difference. Specially this VW beetles, one of the main reasons they used to leak so much after a quick lube at one of those stations, was because the mechanic were over torquing them. Thanks you watching.     In a bind, I had a stripped out oil stud and my local ace hardware had the drill bit, tap and the 8 to 6mm step studs

      Yes you are correct. Specially these engine case . They can easily strip. I too from time to time visit that hardware to purchase bolts for mechanical application. Thanks for watching.

    Torque is important. ALWAYS torque to factory spec, never "cinch it up" when a torque value is assigned to a nut or bolt.
