vintage speed has taken this to a whole different level . if you can afford it ,worth every cent and more. performace, style and durabilty all in one. 🧡👊
Trav has a vintage speed in his 55' I've definitely been eyeballing them!
My faverite is the scat shifter
My favrite shifter is the scat drag fast shifter
They are definitely tight and nice! It was my pops favorite shifter!
Gene Berg for the win
That's one I haven't owned yet! Is the T handle pushbutton lockout the style you're talking about? Is that the only shifter they have? I may have to keep an eye out for one to try it out!
Yes. T handle with a button. 6710 and 6710EB are my favorites. It’s usually better to buy them new direct from Berg. People usually want retail pricing for used ones
@@bava67 Not sure why I’ve never tried one but might have 2
Scat was by far designed for racing, hence the name. Had one in a Ghia with a 2110. Never owned a Berg because their look reminded me of the cheap shifters back in the day, plus on most of my VWs I wanted a round shift knob. Glad Berg offers one now. Of course many shifters nowadays cost as much as a whole VW did in the 90’s.
Right!? I Can't believe how expensive some shifters are now! I kind of feel the same as you on the looks of the Berg but people love and swear by them, I might need one just to see what the hype is about.
The Hurst "copper colored' shifter you liked was marketed as the "HURST GOLDENROD." I had one in a dune buggy and it was great! Sand dune driving required both hands on the wheel most of the time, but grabbin gears didn't require huntin and if you got stuck, it was possible to hold the trigger in the up position and shift back and forth between first and reverse without releasing the trigger,(very quick).
Thanks for the info! The fact it was called the GOLDENROD makes me like that Hurst even more!
I've had many a shifter in Bella.
I first tried the short throw plate, I did not care for it.
2nd I had a scat t-handle same as Pops' there, I dont think I ever got it adjusted properly. I did not care for it. After I got the transmission rebuilt I purchased an Empi short throw. I absolutely love that shifter. I still have it to this day. A few years ago I scored a killer deal on a Hurst shifter... That is my favorite!!
Keep up the great work brother!!
Yeah the Scat and the short throw plates seem like they have to be perfect! I love the Hurst and the Empi copy Idk if its the way their spring loaded or the weight itself the just have a great feel to them. I definitely need to get the copper one fixed and in Bugly
My favorite has to be the Berg, from there the Empi trigger shifter.
Good video man and good topic.
Interesting, you’re the second to say the Berg! It’s 1 I haven’t owned I may have 2 get 1 to try it out!
@@mileageunknown8910 vintage speed is a great shifter also, just beyond my price point cause I’m frugal as crap lol
I drove a car with a berg and was impressed, I’ve driven plenty with a vintage speed and was equally impressed.
@@VWJawbreaker yeah I love the look of a lot of the Vintage Speed stuff but man it’s $$$
@@mileageunknown8910 you get what you pay for...😉
@@vayabroder729 very true! Although I have been surprised a few times by cheaper parts!
Most of the copper Hursts you find are straight shaft shifters. Your angled one is more rare.
I really like the copper one, it needs some work but I'd like to get it back into a car one of these days. I like to find an og shift knob for it.
I've got a curved Hurst Goldenrod with walnut knob in my '66 Mini-T dune buggy. I am assessing it now for maintenance or repairs. What repair plate do you speak of?
@@JayAlbright-h6f I believe Empi sells a trigger shifter rebuild kit, but I’d have to search to see if it’s still available. Worst case scenario, order a new Empi trigger shifter and use it for parts
@@mileageunknown8910 I have the walnut knob but no shifter to go with it!
@@dubworldvwadventures I need knobs! Lol
The scat drag fast
That hands down is was my pops favorite shifter!
I found a repair plate on ebay for that copper Hurst shifter. It goes over the broken plastic piece holding it all together. It’s about $29 but may save you some time?
All the best. Great video btw!
Thanks for the tip! I've seen some repair kits on thesamba as well. The copper 1 is definitely one I'd like to get usable again.
I have a scat in the dune buggy I just picked up and I find the throw to be close to stock in my opinion although it may just be worn out bushings
I have a Scat in my '73 Ghia, love it.
Nice! That was always pops favorite!
Ive Got a Empi One I Just Installed ,Heaps better than the stock one that was In Bess ,I Love that old Copper Hurst One Nice
Yeah I need 2 fix the top plate on the copper hurst it just looks so cool!!
Hey guys,
Kevin here from Australia.
In my 63 bug i have a vintage speed shifter.
Now they are pricey but you get what you pay for and in 2021 vintage speed are the best at the moment just like the other shifters you showed they were probably the best in their day.
Anyhoo Stay safe and healthy guys
✌ Peace
I really like a lot of the vintage speed shifters they have such a cool look to them.
@@mileageunknown8910 the vintage speed shifter now has a nylon bush on the shifter ball at the bottom that really tightens up the shifter action.
Vangaurd shifter, strong smooth easy to adjust
Wow I didn't think I've ever seen one, I'm guessing they're pretty hard to find these days?
@@mileageunknown8910 took me a year and a half to round up all the peices!! Now I got 2...
@@cesarpasillas9376 nice! I'm going 2 keep my eye open for them now!
@@mileageunknown8910 there not flashy , but I like the rare stuff, I'm pulling my Berg shifter out to use this one.
I'm running empi trigger shifter 13.5 on my 70 baja 1600 sp, empi trigger shifter short 12 on 74 sunbug 1303 1600 dp, and empi t-handle shifter on my 74 1303 hardtop 1700 type 4
Nice! I like the Empi trigger shifters!
Scat shifter all the way!
Pops loved the scat in his car I just couldn’t get adjusted to work after we did the engine/trans swap! I might have 2 give it another try.
Mi favorita, la Drag Fast de Scat... tengo una de eses en mi carro, Saludos...
Nice! The Dragfast was my Pops favorite
I think many people today go with the Berg , black mamba, Hurst... I myself have never tried those, but back in late 70's early 80's I purchased a Scat drag fast shifter out of a magazine solely on it's looks.. After replacing the stock shifter with the Scat, I couldn't believe the difference.. it was like going from a beetle to a 930 Porsche... I still love that shifter but you very seldom see one in a car.. I'm not sure if they still make it...
It hands down was my pops favorite shifter! I always like how crazy short the throw was on them.
@@mileageunknown8910 Amen to that... My first experience with hi performance stuff.. and just love the looks...
The Gene Berg shifter has been the benchmark for years but the ones from Vintage Speed in Taiwan like the one you have look really really nice. I have one of their exhaust systems and it’s great quality.
A lot of people have said the Berg shifter is the way 2 go and it’s the 1 I haven’t tried! How’s the sound on the vintage speed exhaust!? I really like the look of their exhaust systems
@@mileageunknown8910 it is fairly quiet, as compared to a Tri-Mil exhaust system, for example. Quality is great. Might be the last exhaust you buy for the car.
@@vayabroder729 nice! Good 2 know I’ve been contemplating one of their exhausts for my 66’ Fastback
@@mileageunknown8910 Aircooled.net is one of their dealers. Not sure if it’s still on but if you gave them a Like on their Facebook page you got a nice discount coupon on an order. I did when I bought my exhaust close to two years ago and got a very nice discount.
@@vayabroder729 yeah I follow vintage speed online and have ordered from Aircooled.net quite a few times they’ve always been very helpful with questions I’ve had
I had most ,mine now on my 61 double cab is a CSP tall ,,,,,thats German made. aint cheap looks like a hurst with the button for reverse smooth not like the others. also I have the brass ring on the shift tube
Just bought CSP for baywindow...Hope its good choice..You still lovin it? Should have bus on the road in a.few weeks replaceing all steering rubber right now
I really like the look of a lot of the CSP products like you said can be $$$ thanks for checking out the vid!
I have a Scat shifter and it's not allowing me to downshift. Is there a video available for adjusting the shifter installation
Actually Hurst made straight handle shifters. EMPI does not
I Couldn't remember which was which I probably saw the straight ones in an old Hurst ad. I really want to get the copper Hurst fixed for Bugly!
Hursts are great. But I have arthritis so round shift balls tend to hurt my hand now
@@bava67 makes sense I wonder if pops liked the T handle on the scar for similar reasons
Copper Hursts all around. Even in the bus.
I've always liked the copper Hurst, this one need some love but I want to get it freshened up to use in one of the cars. Thanks for checking out the vid!
Un favorite os te acta shifter
Thanks for checking out the vid
1966 bug has a pin so gear shift won't spin and getting it in is way much. U have to push down while putting bolts in. Will a bus shifter work I like the extra long shifter without pin it just spins and have to search for gears any ideas thanks. RzR.
Thanks for the info, I know I tried to run a bus shifter in Bugly at one point and couldn't make it work ended up giving up.
Do NOT shift without the cluch ...thanks
Anyone in your VW circle running a CSP shifter?
I'll have to keep an eye out, it seems like they have some really sweet products!
I'm just here so I don't get fined.
Lol! Thanks for the support!
