There’s a reason why Turandot is at the top of the opera canon. Puccini’s final work mesmerizes with its sumptuous music, from the alluring overture to Prince Calaf’s passionate “Nessun dorma,” one of the world’s most famous arias ever written. Grammy Award®-winning composer Christopher Tin, known for his film and video game soundtracks (Civilization 4), and acclaimed playwright and screenwriter Susan Soon He Stanton (Succession) discuss their compelling new world premiere ending to Puccini’s final, unfinished work.

Just saw the new ending last night, it was wonderful! I also joined the sing along, which made the new ending so much more meaningful. Thank you for arranging that!

I've just returned home after singing Turandot as a member of the chorus here at the Colón in Buenos Aires. This is by far my favorite Puccini opera. After having sung it many times over the years, and also, of course, listening to it countless times, I've come to despise Alfano's ending. I don't mean to say it's not good... he was a fine composer on his own right. But his work is so below the high bar set by Puccini. I once sung in a production where it was performed complete, without Toscanini's cuts... not much was gained. Only more boastful, stentorean music with absurd and meaningless vocal demands. I'd be fine with the opera ending with Liu's death, exactly where Puccini left it. Just like Toscanini did in the first performance. It would work out perfectly as an open ending under a skillful and creative stage director. Anyways... I do wish you all the best in your difficult endeavor. I feel that, if we have to have an ending, it's a good idea to write a new one. Who knows... maybe I'll get to sing it one day if it ever gets to be performed in Buenos Aires!

As a person who enjoyed singing Calaf many times, I adore the idea of providing a new ending. If one oversings Nessun dorma it is boasting but if you sing it as it is written, which is much more piano than most sing it, it is the first intimate moment he drops his mask of hyper masculinity. I am in Germany. Is there a way I can hear your version from Europe?

So what's the new ending? This is a few minutes of talk about what I don't know what.

Just give Turandot a tragic ending. OR have Liu's Ghost come back as the libretto said she would, and posses Turandots body so she can be with Calif finally and be happy!!!

The traditional ending serves nicely. Thanks, but no thanks.
