Note that this is also her own arrangement (at the beginning of the video you'll see her give the director more notes). Your word for Angelina was "unprecedented," which is completely accurate: at 9 years of age, she understood jazz in a way that few musicians ever will (and NO ONE under the age of 20 ever has). Ignore her age and simply enjoy her as the top tier professional jazz musician that she is. As a fellow musician (sax & clarinet), I too wish I had a fraction of this child's talent!

I love it when somebody with so much knowledge about jazz hears Angelina perform. It is very unusual for a young girl like her now a days to be interested in jazz, especially at this age. I have heard everything she has done, and nobody tells her, this is how you do it, she does all of this on her own. Including the arrangements. Her grandmom played jazz in the house when she was growing up. And with her unbelievable natural talent, this is what we are blessed with. Continue your journey, it is a rabbit hole for sure!!

So many reactors say that Angelina can’t know what these early songs are about. No, that’s not true. You don’t have to live the emotions to perform. Angelina is a truly special person-not one in a million, but once in a lifetime. You’ll see as you watch other music that she arranges and performs that she is way beyond her years musically, emotionally, and intellectually. Even younger than in this song, Angelina is articulate, smart, and aware.
What you’re seeing here is Angelina inhabiting a genre. She does that that effortlessly and authentically: blues, jazz, soul, ballads, r&b, pop… I’ve been listening to music since the 1950’s. Angelina is easily the best singer I’ve ever heard. Just pick a title you like-any age, any genre-and you’ll become a believer.

"Welcome to the wonderful world of Angelina Jordan!" What a great addition you are to her expanding family around the world! When you play this back for yourself it will seem like you are talking about a veteran artist who has been singing for years and has perfected her style. Wrong! She's 9 and she had a lot of influence on this arrangement. I know you will probably go next to her performances on Norway's Got Talent and then I CANNOT WAIT till you listen to her sing 'What A Difference A Day Makes' at 8 years old singing at an outdoor event in front of thousands in the audience. Somewhere Dinah Washington's spirit smiles whenever she hears Angelina singing this great classic.
So much more but I'll save it. Btw, this was the best breakdown of this video I have heard by anyone and let me tell you, a lot of very knowledgeable people have reacted to her performance.

Loved your reaction!!! The fact that you're also a jazz musician makes you appreciate even more what Angelina is doing with her voice and the orchestration. Angelina went back to the source on this one, but modified it musically and vocally. Note the man looking at Angelina's last minute wishes for the band. I heard her make an offhand remark in a video about the song when she was much older saying that it was about an obsessive love, so she was clued in way back then about it. So mature on so many levels!!! Looking forward to catching up on your earlier reactions to Angelina and future ones as well so I subscribed. As amazing as she was at such a young age, she just kept getting better and better--what she strives for--to the point that she is now beginning to operate on a whole other level of vocal maturity. I mean she recently performed on the same stage as Elvis in Vegas! You have much to experience. Pace yourself and enjoy the deep dive down the rabbit hole. We'll be enjoying the ride right along with you.

Angelina was 9 years old in this performance - Her nationality is Norwegian but is fluent in English even at this age - This song was not arranged for her - she wrote the vocal arrangement based on listening to the original Screamin' Jay Hawkins version and communicated to the band how she wanted it to be played - in fact, at the beginning of the video you see Angelina writing down some last-minute changes and it is read by the bandleader. You also notice that her own handwritten notes are on the music stand in front of her as she sings. For more insight into how Angelina works, here is a rehearsal video with some of the same band members at the same age (9 yrs old) - You will see that she is aware of what each musician is doing and communicates to them what she wants to do. The first thing she says is that she wants to start, followed by her saying she wants to start over, later she tells the pianist that the key is too low and that she wants to raise it a half-tone, then at the end of the song she changes the ending on the fly. The spoken language is Norwegian: ua-cam.com/video/80f3t3dmBbk/v-deo.html

Thank you for featuring Angelina again. I hope you will do many more reactions to her, as she is well worth every nanosecond you spend on her. I have watched and listened to her in awe since she released her first video on UA-cam, and what has been evident to me from the start is that she sings with total conviction, despite the fact that she is far too young to have experienced the events suggested in the lyrics of the song she has chosen to sing. But it is not only that, for strange as it may seem is the even more remarkable fact that she can convey the appropriate emotions within those lyrics to her listener.
This is Angelina's tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, who wrote and performed the song in 1956 (50 years before Angelina was born). She based her arrangement on his original performance, although she discarded all the theatrics and allowed her voice and body language to tell the story. The song has been covered by many singers over the years, but to my knowledge, Angelina is the only one who has sung in the same style as the original.
There are many things I found particularly worthy of note in this video. Some I recognised immediately and those I missed were brought to my attention by the more observant Angelina fans (her Angels) and I thank them for letting me know what I had missed. Another Angelina "Angel" has pointed out something else which I had missed, and it is added at (l) below,
    (a) Angelina finishing writing last minute changes she wanted and handing them to the Music Director, who smiled.
    (b) A brief glimpse of Mery Zamani, Angelina's maternal grandmother, a well known and respected Iranian Artist and poet who was also a child prodigy. She was the person who recognised Angelina's talent at an early age and exposed her to all the old time jazz singers.
    (c) The candle with an image of Screamin' Jay Hawkins on it.
    (d) The smile on the face of the Bass player.
    (e) How she rose on to her toes on the last occasion she sang "...because you're mine"
    (f) The fact she occasionally refers to her written notes on the music stand. Possibly to remind herself of the last minute changes she wanted.
    (g) Her unwavering passion throughout the performance. Evidenced by her facial expressions and the way she uses her hands and body to emphasise the direction of the song.
    (h) The way she takes a breath just before she starts the last phrase (I don't care.....) and that breath lasts the whole of that sustained note. A child of that age should not have the ability to hold a note for that length of time.
    (i) At the end, when she sings I Doooont Caaaaare, she employs TWO separate and distinct vibratos to the word care, a wide one to start the word and a tighter one to close the word
    (j) The instant transformation from "performance" mode to that of a pensive child, possibly wondering whether she could have done better. I comment on the "pensive" child because Angelina has an incredible work ethic and seeks to perform every song in a way she considers will bring out all the emotions within the lyrics and melody.
    (k) Perhaps the most remarkable is that despite her tender years, she sings with such total conviction that her authenticity is never in doubt. It is easy to believe that she has experienced the events described in the lyrics. It is not only her voice that is mesmerising, it is also her facial expressions, and the way she uses her hands and body. Her stage presence is electrifying.
    (l) The performance absolutely is powerful and raw but to me, I am amazed that this is balanced by the profound beauty of the ending phrase; the last twelve words of the song. AND… they are essentially sung a cappella!
Angelina has been referred to as the "Queen of Jazz", "The Barefoot Princess", "The girl with a thousand voices". All of them are true, but I prefer the nickname I gave her after listening to about six of her performances. For me, she is "The Chameleon of Song", for as a chameleon is able to change its colour to match its surroundings, so Angelina is able to change the "colour" of her voice to accurately match the needs of the song to reveal the emotions within the lyrics and melody. Even more remarkable is her innate ability to communicate those same emotions to her listeners.

Went back and watched again looking at these. I did notice the candle but actually thought it was a coffee mug. I did catch that it was screaming Jay though. I saw the bass player smile but honestly going back a second time I'm not sure there is really any significance. I'm sure every one of those musicians is a billion times more aware than we are of her brilliance by actually working with her. Maybe that is included as a small reminder of that. I did see the notes letter but didn't actually understand it so thanks (though someone else commented on the same). I saw her looking at the sheet music. Here were my thoughts on this and dang it I wanted to comment on it lol...
You'll see jazz musicians have sheet music when often they don't need it. I imagine it's for many reasons depending on the musician. Some might have made notes like you suggest. For me, I visualize chords, chord progressions, melodies, and solos all in my brain. But that can get really messy and complicated. Seeing it on paper allows one to tap into a different creative stream. Moreover, I'm visually oriented so when I hear the rhythm section making some adjustments or anyone else for that matter, I can understand it quicker (I guess my neurons fire faster when visually induced?) when looking on paper. Who knows for her. Re: passion ..yeah she is definitely DEEPLY connected throughout. W.r.t. to her hands and body, I could be wrong but I think she's just grooving. Simple as that. Yeah that breath control is RIDONKulous for her body. I COMPLETELY missed that double vibrato. Fascinating. I did notice her completely playing with the vowels and creating all kinds of sounds with that entire ending phrases as well as stretching timing, volume, intonation, and many other variables. It was a mini clinic all in 5 seconds! Hmmm...I didn't consider the pensive child perspective either. I can see that. I'm not sure but it's definitely very interesting to consider. The last one. I feel it's much much more than that. Her technique is ridiculous and that gives her not only confidence and conviction but a garage full of tools at her disposal.
Thank you Soo much for all of this. I rewatched the whole thing from a different perspective 😍

Greatly enjoyed your reaction and analysis. I learned of Angelina 4 years ago. Her music and who she is as a person, has turned me into a superfan at age 65. I am inspired to introduce Angelina to as many people as I can and to learn more about her unique talents. Please take the time to read the biography I compiled for her. UA-cam wouldn't allow me to post the full biography.
Born Angelina Jordan Astar on January 10, 2006 in Oslo, Norway.
Angelina started singing around 18 months of age, after listening to Whitney Houston on UA-cam. She quickly became obsessed with listening to music videos and her maternal grandmother, Mery Zamani got Angelina interested in classic jazz. Mery Zamani is Iranian and was a prodigy as an artist and poet while growing up in Iran.
Angelina attended the Oslo Waldorf School and participated in the Oslo School of Music and Performing Arts after-school program, where starting around age 4, she had training in music but no vocal training. Her teachers were smart enough to not attempt to change what she was doing vocally. More recently she along with her grandmother have designed and made the clothing she wears on stage.
    *Why Angelina always performs barefoot*
At age 6, while traveling in the Middle East with her mother and grandmother, Angelina noticed a girl around her age standing on the side of the road, asking people to step on her bathroom scale to be weighed in hopes of getting some money. Angelina took off her shoes so as to not get the scale dirty and stepped on the scale many times to make the girl feel better. Angelina befriends the girl who was not wearing shoes and has scars on her feet, and learns she is an orphan. The orphan girl tells Angelina how beautiful she thinks her shoes are. Angelina says her shoes don’t fit her well and she wants to give her shoes to the orphan girl who thanks Angelina for giving her the shoes.
Angelina asked the girl what she wanted to be when she grew up and the girl replied, “I want to become a doctor, but that will never happen since I have no parents and I have siblings so I have to do whatever is necessary for us to survive.” Angelina told the girl to never give up on her dreams. The poor girl asked Angelina what she wanted to be when she grew up and Angelina replied that she wanted to sing for the whole world. The poor girl said she would pray every day so Angelina’s dream would come true.
Angelina still says she thinks of that homeless girl every day and has always performed barefoot to remind her of all the children who are less fortunate. At age 9, she became the youngest published author in Norway’s history by writing a book about this encounter in the Middle East. PLEASE PURCHASE Angelina’s book from her merchandise store on her official website.

Angelina says this is about love. She referred to it as " desparate love." She is an emotional empath. She also says at 1 and a half "l started with jazz." At this point she had already performed "Fly Me to the Moon" after Sinatra on American TV (The View). Angelina is very conscious of the history and background of songs and arrangements.

Edit) Fly Me to the Moon you have 3 to choose from. The music video in the thunbnail directed by her grandma Mery, the live version from the view when she was slighly younger (8) OR the version she sung when she was invited by Quincy Jones to sing his orchestrated version for Quincy 85th Bday event at the O2 in London when she was 12 years old.

Great reaction! You touched upon one of Angelina's greatest attributes...her storytelling. When she played with Gregg Field (who played drums for Sinatra, Basie, Ella, etc.), a few years back he raved about how great her storytelling is, like Sinatra's was. You believe what she says! As Sinatra once said, she never lets her singing get in the way of her storytelling.

AJ is empathic to an unbelieveably high degree. I think that's the key to her level of emotional expression at such an early age. She can glean the emotions from another's vocal performance and internalize them, whether she has experienced them or not. Then she adds them to her own vocal performances. So she can easily sing believably about obsessive love, using her idea of it without actually having experienced it romantically. About the barefoot thing, she actually wrote a book about the experience that caused her to make that pledge, and became the youngest published author in Norway among her many other incredible accomplishments.

Hello Aron, nice that you took a little look into Angelina's rabbit hole. She was 9 years old when she heard this song, she arranged everything herself based on the original by Screaming J. Hawkins from 1956, you are at the very beginning and I hope that you will embark on the further journey because there is a lot to discover, she is the best singer in the world (my opinion), but you will find out for yourself and believe me, you will be addicted to her voice just like all other fans (Angels), she is also called the barefoot angel with 1000 voices, why she always performs barefoot is another story, she can adapt and improve her voice to any song and also convey a lot of emotions and she has not only written around 200 covers but also 13 originals written by her and 2 written for her, all of which are amazing and are already legendary and there is a lot to tell, I look forward to further reactions and have now subscribed to you, greetings from Germany, by the way, she is now 18 years old

    🎉🎉🎉 The Barefoot Princess -
(From her book, television and radio interviews, and podcasts made between 2014-2015. Includes excerpts from her diary made that day in 2012.)
Why does Angelina sing barefooted? Angelina Jordan is known as "The Barefoot Princess" or "The Barefoot Princess of Jazz," amongst many other names. She always performs barefooted, whether in front of a live audience or during a studio performance. The story is that while living in the Middle East, at 6 years old, Angelina came across an orphaned girl, of her own age, sitting in the street, weighing people on a bathroom scale to earn money. Angelina said to herself, "I would like to share her life for one second to know what it is like to sit alone, wet, and damp, and barefoot in a corner of the street." Angelina could see the girl's bare feet were scarred and that it was cold outside, so she offered her own shoes to the girl. Little Angelina says that she really loved her shoes, as they were very nice and she knew she would miss them. But she saw the other little girl’s need for them, which outweighed her own desire to keep them. So she insisted the little girl take them.
Angelina called her Princess, even though the girl said she didn't live in a castle, but the ruins of a building next to where she sat. After sharing their hopes and dreams, the little girl said of Angelina's wish to sing for the world, "You will become the one you dream of and when your dreams come true, you have to remember the poor children without shoes; and I will pray for you Angelina.” Later that day, 6 y/o Angelina wrote in her diary, "The world is very strange. Right then and there, I felt as if a door in my heart opened up, and it was filled with lots of lights. It was as if there was, from Earth to Heaven, a staircase. I climbed the stairs. To be able to do something for another human - it was such a big thing…hard to describe really.”
From that point on, Angelina takes off her shoes, in honor of ‘Princess’ and all the other less fortunate children of the world, who are orphaned, hungry, or in want of even basic clothing. In 2015, at the age of 9, Angelina wrote a book about the encounter, as everyone continued to ask why she sang barefoot. Her grandmother, Mery Zamani, created the artwork for the book. So at 9, Angelina Jordan became the youngest published author in Norway. Angelina has performed alongside many other artists, raising attention and helping to raise over 21 million euros and millions of dollars for children in need.

She learned from the classic jazz greats by listening to them since she was a toddler. It seems she has always known who she is and what she would be. With her first song on NGT one of the judges told her, "You ARE music". And she lives and breathes it always. She has said she is always hearing music. At this point she arranged this piece. Yeah, she is committed to charities for needy children since she met the poor girl and gave her her shoes at 6 years old. You have to see "I'll Be There" she did with a cold for a charity that she was advised not to do after becoming sick from singing in the cold outside for the Nobel Peace Prize recipient. I really enjoyed your reaction. As a fellow jazz musician, I'm fascinated at watching a true child prodigy at work in the genre. Angelina grew up listening to the greats and internalized so much. There is a bts video of this same session showing her working with these musicians. Yes she is a little pro. When she was interviewed around this time, she said this song was about desparation for love; this shows she had a sophisticated emotional worldview at such a young age. We have been given so much video of the growth and development of this artist and had my eyes opened to the art of music at my age of 73 by this young woman.
AJ in many videos has shown a fantastic abilty with runs an melismas, fry and vibrato but it always in service of the song, not to demonstrate vocal gymnastics for it own sake. I think she is primarily a storyteller and as her original songs attest a brilliant lyricist. But in some videos that you will see, she can really let it rip as well. She is known as the girl with a thousand voices At 18 years old, we've only heard just a few of them.❤

It is not uncommon in Norwegian, especially for children, to say yes or no on inhale. As an old male I can't get even close to that high pitch though, nor the maintained and fairly stable pitch. I don't know how hard it is to do for people that didn't do it as children, but I would guess most adult Norwegians are at least to some degree able to vocalize short words on inhale.

Thanks A-ARon! this remains one of my favorites by Angelina at age 9....she is much older now, and even doing her own compositions (note: the beginning she is holding a candle with Screamin' Jay on it).. I really enjoyed your reaction...

Angelina turned 18 on January 10, 2024. Here is a short clip of how she sounds now (Teddy Swims cover - Lose Control): ua-cam.com/video/pr3fwAcB0Yw/v-deo.html - she recently performed her first Las Vegas headline concert on Feb 29, 2024 - Here was her opening song - Diamonds Are Forever: ua-cam.com/video/H5K4lYtyguc/v-deo.html

Appreciate it...but.i will be holding off. I'm about to explore her early years more and move forward chronologically to understand and react through her growth. Thank you...will get there

@@A-AronReacts No problem - just keep in mind that after you check out her earliest stuff - it is OK to jump around as her library is so large unless you do a reaction a day and only do a couple of reactions a week - it will take a year or two to catch to where she is now :)

@@robertsilva631 Thanks good advice. But honestly, I'm in no rush. I'm much more interested in taking it in and learning and appreciating the artist for who they are and in the case of Angelina, she was so precocious it seems wrong to just "jump forward"

An absolutely brilliant reaction. As a jazz person, you pick up on the subtle nuances that mmake this a masterpiece. Strap in. You are about to go on a womderful kourney of discovering Angelina Jordan. I am a new subscriber. Well done!

React to her cover of What A Difference A Day Makes live in Oslo that she did right after her win at Norway's Got Talent. Her version is like a 7-year-old Dinah Washington. Also her version of Fly Me To The Moon on The View.

As a jazz lover yourself perhaps your next best Angelina reactions would be to "Feeling Good" at 10 live on Norways TV or take a look at the beginning with "Gloomy Sunday" on NGT (Norway's Got Talent). Three of the four NGT songs are Jazz classics except for Bang Bang (You Shot Me Down) which itself is stunning. These songs are all abridged versions to fit the show format so some Reactors have done all four at once. Love your in depth reaction. Thanks

This is by far the best reaction to this sensational performance I have seen and heard. And I probably seen over 500 reactions to this one :D We also learn a lot from your knowledge in Jazz music. Respect!
