- SHAPEWAYS has officially closed. And left a lot of people in the lurch, which is really disappointing. None of the below links will work anymore.
Watch me talk about bridging the gap between scale-accurate looks and competition-specific trucks. We all want to look good, but competing at the same time usually meant compromise, and with this specific build, I've tried to do balance myself on the edge of both.
Shapeways is a 3D printing company based in NYC, offering high resolution prints in a variety of materials - these are not your home, consumer-grade printers! You want a print in nylon, great! How about precious metals? No problem! They can do it all, and at a reasonable price and timeline. There's some amazing people, making some amazing parts and accessories for our scale building obsession. Here's just a few:

My thanks to Shapeways for providing me with some upcoming product for future videos, and full disclosure, I wouldn't have made this video if I didn't believe in what Shapeways is doing!

Canadian: "Brake fluid thingy."
American: "Dat dare brake booster... merica!"
Everyone else: "Vacuum operated brake booster and master cylinder. Science! Yes!"
Thank you Matthew for this video, great idea to talk about Shapeways. RC scale building nowadays wouldn't be the same without Shapeways and all the guys who are sharing their phantastic construction work with the rest of us over this printing store. I love it! 👍👍
You're totally right! Thanks so much for watching!
I just met James at Axialfest 2017. He and his family really are great people. Our sons became instant friends, next thing I know my son ditched me. Couldnt keep those two apart. It was so nice to see such great family atmosphere at that event.
Ha! That's amazing! That's what this hobby is all about, bringing people together. So nice. Thanks for watching!
Thanks Corey, it was fun hanging with you and your son. Yes those kids definitely hit it off.
Thats a sweet build! I had a 1983 SR5 Toyota 4x4 as a young buck with 38" it was geared etc and let me tell you that truck was a tank and could go anywhere. Ran the crap out of that truck went through a few 2.2 motors and a tranny but I still miss that little beast! Great mpg also lol This truck reminded me of mine, awesome build and video big thumbs up!
They were awesome little trucks. Wish I could find a clean one today to build up! Thanks for watching!
The twisted wires under the brake master cylinder is so badass. The whole build is next level but that little detail made it over the top for me!
FYI shapeways discount code : RG6BE valid untill 20th of august 15% off.. got it at the Recon G6 in Belgium..
Thanks for sharing the code. Hopefully it works for some.
Wow. The paint and well.... everything just makes your whole truck look awesome. Great job.
Thanks! It's not paint though, lexan vinyl wrap.
Another great video, i remember when James was just starting out on the guild designing parts. He has really stepped up his game the last year or two and it's nice to see his success.
And there's still more room for success, as there's always new ideas coming! Thanks for watching!
Thanks Craig, that's cool of you for saying so.
Love the build. Huge thumbs up!
Awesome, thank you!
Very nice stuff. I was not a fan of 3d printed stuff at first. I didn't like the ribbing artifacts of the print process, but it has really come a long way now, very detailed. The more I see the more excited I get about the technology and the RC hobby.
Wait until you see the latest printers from HP that Shapeways is using now! Thanks for the feedback!
I've gotten a few things from Knight and they are very nice. Tail light buckets and lenses, rotopax. He has some cool stuff. Nice Yota!
Thanks very much, and thanks for watching!
Man I can’t believe you sold this truck to Josh. Well I hope whoever he traded it to appreciates the amount of time and effort you put into it.
Enjoying the videos you are putting out. I’m new to the hobby and finding them helpful.
Welcome to the hobby! Thanks for watching and I'm glad you find the videos helpful!
Another great seller on Shapeways for scale stuff and everything classic Tamiya is AMPRO engineering. He also has a UA-cam channel showing off all his stuff. His interior for the Traxxas Bronco is absolutely amazing.
Yes, he’s also a Vendor on the SBG!
Great truck, Matt. Your work, James' cool parts and Neal's wrap really brings that together.
Thanks very much Rich!
Bro that is an awesome truck that looks so realistic very nice I don't have any knights custom parts yet but I got my eye on his products for my Scx10 JK.
There's so many cool parts for a JK. I've got a few that I'll be using in an upcoming build. Thanks for watching!
Awesome job on the SR5 there and love the engine bay...
I have the Knight Customs (from Shapeways) rear lights and inner wheel wells for my SCX10 II XJ body, they look great and quality is fantastic.I'm in the UK and they shipped from Europe so shipping was cheaper than from the USA and no import duty.
I think the whole concept of Shapeways is a great idea.
While a hard bodied truck is on my new wish list I'm really thinking of a Proline SR5 or a Axial JK body just because of what Knight Customs has to offer for those bodies...
That's great, thanks for watching! It's pretty amazing that with a few simple parts added on to a lexan body, you can create something that almost looks like a hard body. I should have mentioned that Shapeways has a European office as well. Thanks for watching!
Never had any problems with Shapeways and Knight Customs , I highly recommend them both.
Same!
I still amazed that they are printing metal. I'm a CNC op. & I know a little cad & programming too. So I have a general idea of the tech but to print a finished metal product off a 3D printing it's incredible.
It's a pretty cool process. They have a demo of it somewhere on their site I believe, and not as complicated as you might think! Cheers!
Dam I wish I had your skill you're so good at making these trucks look so real for real man hats off to you
Very kind, thanks!
Oh man. Who doesnt remember playing the 4 way arcade game of Ivan "The Ironman" Stewart. This body brings back memories. I hope Neill starts putting those skinz in production. They are not available now.
I'll have to reach out and see if he'll do them again.
Wow! That's one cool looking truck! Love the realistic look to it! I wish I had that kind of talent! Skills and patience! Mine never comes out that sweet, I have tried! But I don't have the steady hands and the vision that I use to have when I was younger. Nice work man!
Thanks very much! All it takes is time and effort, and anybody can have something turn out as good as their imagination will allow! Thanks for watching!
Wow. This is pretty cool. Really shows how the future is shaping up.
The future is now!
That truck is freaking Awesome!
Thanks very much!
I love everything from Short course too scale and this will change everything not just for scale it can be used for everything great video just gained a sub keep making awesome videos
You're totally right, the possibilities are endless! Thanks for the sub!
Thanks for the video bro, your work is always top notch, all your builds, you deff have the driving skills also! Love the trail vids, anyways thanks for sharing I will definitely be adding things to my wishlist for another build an as always first gen hilux toyotas are my thing, that 2nd gen ya have there is a beaut also!
Kudos my friend!
Doc Haze Lord4GivMeh Thanks very much for the feedback! The possibilities are endless with 3D!
that truck looks amazing, very good job
Thanks very much! Couldn't have done it without the great parts from Knight Customs!
I would love to see an arb bumper for the hip venture FJ Cruiser
A good choice!
Wow this older build is so sick! I think you should recap all your build in new video. Also what trucks remained in your collection be cool to see update thanks!
What’s on the Bench is a good series to follow! You get an idea of all the projects I’m working on!
shapeways gives crazy detail to these scale trucks, yota looks sweet!
Thanks very much!
Shapeways has the nissan hardbody pre-runner body for 5 bills ($500) as well
Shapeways is a great site. It seems they are always to the rescue when I need an oddball part.
They are also much quicker than even they say.. I've never had to wait the estimated time.
Same, the service is fantastic. Can't wait to get the next round of parts from my friends at Shapeways and Knight Customs. Thanks for watching!
I still can't believe thats a wrap. Its amazing, puts my turks n jerps to shame 😂😂😂 keep up the awesome work man. Its awesome to have more and more people making scale things for our hobby. We've come a long way from semi frames and tlt axles with shitty looking lexan boxes on top!
Freqeskinz does some pretty cool stuff. I'm still a big fan of hard bodies (obviously) but every once and awhile you need a Lexan truck for competition! This hobby just keeps getting better and better! Thanks for watching!
Knight Customs has been very supportive and helpful. James is a fantastic guy along with his awesome family! I highly recommend their parts to anyone that is even curious. Great video brother. I felt the same way for a long time about 3d printing but the more I analyzed the situation the more I realized it really is it's own form of artwork that deserves much respect and appreciation. I am currently working on a couple builds utilizing some super scale Knight Customs parts. Quality is better than any other 3d part I have used hands down. I mean have you seen the Pull-Pal...? My GOD it is sexy! 😍 This video is #espapproved lol!
Yep, he makes good stuff. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching!
I use Shapeways for all of my hobbies, have 2 shops myself. I also purchase a lot of stuff from others for my stuff.
That's great! Post your Shapeways store link here!
Most of my stuff is for 1/14 Tamiya Trucks. I have made a few 1/10 scale garage items, but I need to do some work to bring the price of those down. Suggestions and ideas are always welcome. Anyway, here is the link. www.shapeways.com/shops/printshopmafia
I want this exact body so bad. I would honestly pay crazy money for a body this good. Gonna buy a VS4-10 ULTRA and really want a realistic body like this one. Where can people like me with no time or the requirements to make a body like this, purchase these?!
Your part list isn’t working bro, but that build is so badass! Do hey have a website for that skin wrap on your truck?
Absolutely amazing build
Thanks very much! I really like this one.
Just saw this video, and looked on shape ways for light buckets for my ford raptor body. To get two headlight and two tail light buckets would cost me almost 60 dollars, that seems a little steep to me.
Outstanding as always, thanks SGB!
Cheers!
I have quite a few knight customs pieces on my scx10, their quality far surpasses the detail of most home 3d printers, i have a 3d printer and even on its highest quality print it doesnt come close to the quality of shapeways stuff
The difference between a $500 and $500,000 printer are incredible!
That's a sweet looking truck. I love the plate on the back. 😝 I just recently ordered an item for my rig from shapeways.
Thank you! What did you order, and for what truck? Curious to know!
Scale Builder's Guild I got the low cg battery tray for the TRX-4.
Awesome! The Bowhouse RC one? I literally just uploaded a video going over that same part!
Scale Builder's Guild yeah that's the one. Nice, I'm going to have to look up that video now.
Beautiful rig brother. I love it
Hey! Thanks very much!
now 3 years later its still awesome... only needs a leaf spring setup...
Love the build and your videos. Is this class 2 or class 1? I'm looking at using this body and the knights customs stuff for a c1 build vs a hilux hardbody. Also the link to your build parts works but no parts are listed
Thanks, this one is C2. I'll check the links.
Hello.Where can I get them driver's heads? And yeah Shapeways is the way to go.Have been using them for a few years now.
James French (aka BeetleLover on TamiyaClub) makes them. Thanks for watching!
Woah, your videos have SEVERELY improved!
3D printed parts really open up customization options. What I'd like to see is someone make an entirely original body design, either 3D printed or lexan formed over a printed form.
You mean not a Toyota? ;) That would be interesting to see what people could come up with! Thanks for watching!
Yeah, more jeeps and land rovers are what the world needs! 🤣
Awesome build bud. Looks spot on
Thanks very much!
Scale Builder's Guild your welcome. I need to get out with mine a and post some more videos up
What a super epic little rig duude! real good job!
Cheers!
Scale Builder's Guild 👌👌
Shapeways are brilliant. I got my duck hood ornament and Mack signs from them for my Tamiya rubber duck Mack 🦆
That's awesome! The possibilities are endless and it's changing our hobby for the better. Thanks for watching!
Great video sir, very informative. Ready for the running video now.
Thank you Brad! I'll have to do my best to film and comp at the same time!
Scale Builder's Guild , you can do it. That's why your that guy!
Do you happen to have a video showing the overall build of this and what you started with?
No, but there is a forum thread: scalebuildersguild.com/forum/threads/scx10-ii-winning-is-hard.25291/
How do I get that same wrap? I looked for it couldn’t find it? It’s about the sweetest wrap I’ve seen!!
Custom order, but Neal should be happy to do it! Thanks for watching!
Scale Builder's Guild thanks u should do a video on ur setup on this truck I love the way ur trucks sit and the stance is awesome thanks
Looks great and really makes the truck, too bad those knight customs parts are sooo expensive!! If time is money you may save money but just the engine bay and motor are over $150. Knight customs just charges too much and prices seem random. GCM and RC nerds are a bit more reasonable.
You get what you pay for. James' parts are very robust and will take some abuse. I don't mind the pricing structure. That said, Shapeways does charge a lot. Now that I've got my own printer, it changes things a bit!
Great looking truck! What chassis is this? Where is and what servo mount are you using?
Scx10ii and standard servo location.
Way to blur the line... I love where you stand with this rig.
Thank you sir! It's a very fun turk to drive and work on!
wow, great job!
Hey bud can you send me the link for the body wrap? Awesome build 🤙
Nope, it was custom. He’ll do one if you ask I think.
Is that a Volvo C303 in the back grund? Still in service in the Swedish army.
I believe that it was! I have built a couple over the years.
I olso wouht love tho si mor from this Volvo C303 you hef bild 😍👍 thnks
How do you have your rear shocks mounted because I’m having trouble with trying to mount the body close enough to the chassis but the rear shock towers get in the way. The budget series is cool!
I'm using a Knight Customs drop-bed that has an area cut out for the shock towers, then cleverly hid them from view. Using the drop-bed allows for a much lower than stock bed. Thanks for the question!
Scale Builder's Guild Thanks!
Love this toyota racing colors! But never so any fj40 with them! cheers
I've never seen an FJ40 painted that way either, but good idea! Thanks for watching!
Holy Cow! That's super awesome Rig!!! That thing though cost more than my first Real pick up truck though.LOL
Thanks very much! I wish my real truck cost what my small ones do! ;)
I need that body for a scx24
Wonder if Knight Customs would be willing to help me finish the Tamiya F350 High Lift dually project I have going. I just need the dually flares for the bed.
Probably not. I don't believe he does custom work. Try styrene!
looks great
Thanks!
cool stuff man, your truck looks great! is that the evolution of the jeep speed truck, or a different one altogether?
Thanks very much! No, this started life as the RTR SCX10II... The Jeepspeed has been retired for now and there's a new 4Runner shell on it. I should do a little video review of it maybe! Thanks for watching!
Scale Builder's Guild oh your welcome, it's a good show. was that the four runner behind you on your left? i did notice that one, the wheels caught my eye.
Yep, that's it!
How come you look 5 years younger in your newer videos and older in your older videos? I'm going to have to get MIB to investigate this. Possible Alien among us. 😂😂
😂 Must be better lighting and better camera, but I'll take this as a compliment!
I don't feel like 3D printed parts are a cheat at all.
Its like going to the auto parts store.
Absolutely, tons of room for customization that was unheard of before.
Truck is @ 6:00
And my ugly face is at @0:00!
i like 3d printing and your so right that its amazing what u can do i do have a ? i have a boom racing d110 with the trc body and i was wondering what kv motor would b goid for a truck thats so very heavy i havent put a brushless in a crawler before and im sorta new to brushless so any info u can give me id b very thankfull
I run a 3100kv Tekin Element Proof Roc412. You'll want more torque than speed. That said, most trail-trucks don't really need Brushless. Take a look at the 35T FX-R combo. Cheap and reliable!
Shapeways sent me a bad batch. My fenders lasted one run. When I contacted them they kept dodging my questions when I asked if the stood by their products to be up to their standards. The team at shapeways that contacted me made it seem like i was just after free parts. They way I was treated was just disgusting. Made me feel like I’ve been scammed. I’m not a big account but I’m an rc hobbyist like the rest of you. Thanks for reading and like so I hope this gets shapeways attention
Not sure what to say. Sorry you had a bad experience.
Where did you get the Toyota skin? Can i purchase a similar one?
I got it from Neal at Freqeskinz.com He should be able to do a custom one for you. Cheers!
Do u know if they make these in a work cab? Why do they call these a hilux....because of the accessories? Cause when I worked at a Toyota dealer they are called a Cadillac body style. What I'm looking for a ext-cab less....just basic cab. I want to do one up like my really truck. I have all smitty built roll bars, bumpers and need bars with Lund visor. Sliding back window sunroof and 10" lift....thank you for this video!!!!
Gorilla tape inside of ur body so u don't break it as easy......ya puts some weight on it...but better than doing another body.....
There's no regular cab on this body style - yet. Glad you enjoyed the video!
U really need to tell me how u did ur body paint , its awesome !! :)
Not paint. It's a wrap by Freqeskinz.
Where i can get this and the cost ?
its ok , i found it . Nice build !! i Really love it
But the one u have its a custom one right ?
shapeways is great!!! nice vid!! 😊
More than great! Thanks for watching!
Thats absolutely Beautiful, unfortunately tho the average Joe would have to take a 2nd mortgage out on his home to get our trucks to look like that 😂!! especially when these company's want $50-60 dollars for a single printed part & some as much as $100 dollars or another example scalers fab bumpers your looking at $100 min for a bumper set etc etc. all looks Amazing but for the average person they'd never be able to afford this... Great Video as always, everything you do looks amazing!!
What does a build like this cost?
I honestly don't remember, but it wasn't cheap. I bet I spent close to $1500 putting it and all it's parts together.
@@scalebuildersguild Thanks for in the info
NICE JOB🤙🏻🇮🇹❗️
Thanks very much!
How did you get the drop bed?
Knight Customs makes it, but I don't see it for sale currently. Ask him!
WOW!
Thanks!
Very amazing
Thank you!
With those kind of prices on shapeways you would be better off buying a printrbot, but then again you probably cant get some of those designs
You can't get any of those designs, they're all exclusively on Shapeways. The point, is that the quality of Shapeways vastly outweighs anything you can print at home with current machines. Again, I don't disparage anyone who owns and prints at home, it's a fantastic hobby and will only get better with time! Thanks for watching!
In addition to using industrial grade printers and great post print processes, they also offer a money back guarentee and have excellent customer service. But yes, if you have the skills, printing parts yourself at home is also awesome.
I spend a lot on my Rc but shapeways is too expensive. I bought a functioning v8 printed for 60 bucks. All you get from shapeways is a 1/4 piece of an engine
What is the best 3D printer for the RC hobby?
The one that Shapeways has. Hard to beat a half-million dollar unit. I own a Tevo Tornado that I'm really enjoying, but the quality will never beat laser sintered.
How did you get such a killer look with the body? I figured it’s a wrap? The decals tho
Yep, it's a wrap from Freqeskinz!
Scale Builder's Guild which one is it??
Sam Carmel I’m not sure what he’s calling it, but you can contact him and he should print this one if you ask.
Thanks for the info! I got one on the way :)
What are you using to paint the side markers and rear lights?!
@@smcarmel Nice! I use Tamiya XF clear colors for the lenses.
Does anyone know lw where I can buy these files? They seem to be discontinued.
What chassis?
SCX10II.
Can I just buy this rig from you??? 😃
almost had one for 100usd needed 50usd in parts to work didn't get it now he fixed it and is making stuff lol
wow
I think Matt hates rc's that look new. His builds look good though. Mine get weathered by the rocks.
Hey man just wondering what size is that light bar I got the same bumper ?
2 inch I believe. I don’t have the truck anymore.
Hey, I have the same body, how did you mount your body without body clips? and did you have to modify the body to fit over the transmission?
I have mount points hidden under the sliders. Two tabs on either side. No body mods were required.
Scale Builder's Guild Velcro or magnets? And my body will not fit over the transmission (spur gear part)
Two 2mm screws on either side. I'm running the original design trans for this build.
Scale Builder's Guild did you make it yourself or can you buy it?
Scalerfab.com sliders.
What camera are you using ?
Sony a6500 with a Sigma 30mm 1.4 lens. It wasn't playing nice and AF was entirely too sensitive!
Are you kidding me 3D printing is the next wave for scale building sure the "Old fashioned way" is great but as a builder this will shorten the time to create parts and accessories quickly and efficiently. I never saw 3D printing as cheating, you still have to put in the time to create the model on your computer and get it perfect without wasting material, its perfect for our hobby. Check out the app SCANN3D
Of course it's a great tool. But I'll always prefer to scratch build - it's a very rewarding process as well.
Hey man what size wire loom do you use? Thank you sir!
1/4” works for me.
Anyone who thinks 3d printing isnt work, has never printed anything. Shit can go wrong for no apparent reason and if one is not there to stop the machine one just wasted a bunch of plastic, electricity and time.
Never mind all the design time.
How did you mount the body to the chassis with the open hood ?
Mounted to the inner fender assembly, and along the rocker panels to the sliders.
Great video's! Iam having a hard time finding that wrap on freqeskinz web site. Is it available? And where if so. Ty
It’s available, special request only!
Not anymore! I guess!
:(
Yes, rather sad!
