In these Nothing Else Matters guitar lesson videos you will learn to play Metallica's biggest power ballad note for note.
Appearing on their mega successful Black Album, Nothing Else Matters was a pretty big departure for this legendary metal band.
The fingerstyle guitar intro is an absolute classic. It has lots of tricky little techniques (hammer-ons, pull-offs, wide stretches and harmonics) within it. After the intro the verse section continues the fingerstyle playing with some really cool open position guitar work.
Overall, this Nothing Else Matters guitar lesson doesn't really go beyond the intermediate level technique wise, but it does display a large number of techniques.
Metallica also decided to change things up a bit with this one and have James Hetfield take the main guitar solo. The result is a blues based, highly melodic musical statement that is short but sweet with minimal technical challenges.
The first Nothing Else Matters guitar lesson video below demonstrates the intro and all of the clean guitar parts along with a few guitar fills.
Also in the first video lesson below is the instrumental clean guitar solo section of the song. Since this part is made up of quite a few guitar overdubs on the record, I have instead arranged it so it can be played on one guitar. There will be obvious parts that can't be played with just one guitar, but I think the arrangement is a good compromise to what is on the actual recording.
The second video is dedicated completely to the big guitar solo played by James Hetfield and the chords that are being played underneath it.
Hope you guys enjoy it! Carl..

I like how this guy can just play any solo and just say, “Hey guys it’s Carl Brown from Guitar lessons 365” 😂
Casual for him
Haha, I thought about the same thing and finally saw sb, who saw that 😂
This one is ez but on his Eruption and Randy Rhoads tribute solo I laughed my ass off when he said it
You should look one Pt.4 main solo lesson :)
I mean, what do you expect him to say he’s making these videos to teach not to show off
Such a shame that this video has less than half of the views as the first intro. I know people get scared of that terrifying word: solo. I was terrified of a couple of words: Cliffs of Dover. This man taught me how to play it through smoothly. Please, I beg you to try it out. If you like the song, then learn it, no questions asked. Just practice, practice, practice.
Thanks for everything Carl!
This is leaps and bounds easier for me than the rest of the song 😆😆
@@clifford_2zero7 forrewl LOL. Solo is prob the easiest part from the song.
This is my first attempt at a solo. Though I learnt many fingerstyles throught my acoustic playing, this will be my first electric guitar solo attempt. But I must be honest, the solo seems a tad bit easier compared to the intro.
"Not the band, the actual train" lol the way he said it
Had 2 Months to learn 3 sets playing lead in a new band, mostly songs I had never played and just wanted to say Thank you Carl, you literally made it possible. Your vids are mint and pitched right at my level. Very grateful.
Just wanna say i learned all my metallica riffs from your videos thankyou so much
Your tutorials are the best, but this is honestly..when I searched for tutorials in my early state of playing..you provided the best tutorials, and still are so THANKS A LOT FOR EVERYTHING!
You will get so many more subscribers, cant believe you don't have over a million with this quality videos :D !
he does now ;)
Thanks for a great video, I have been playing it for awhile and it was great to get the video to illustrate some sections I was not quite right. You are one of the most accurate transcribers on the tube with a great ability to explain the break down of each part. Cheers
this video was uploaded almost 8 years ago and this dude still liking comments! thank you for the lesson, everything was clearly explained. learned it fast. keep up the good work!
thank you for your hard work and all 2 parts, now I can play that fantastic song very well! thanks to you!
More Metallica! For example Call of Ktulu, Ride the lightning, Four horsemen, Day that never comes. Damage inc. intro and solo would be nice
Battery
Day that never comes would be sick
Arvaa Kuka All those lessons are available now on his channel.
@@christianenriquez1603 because he fucking managed to upload daily
Am i savage would be cool
holy shit, that sustain
My amplifier: no don’t even think about it
@@ultimateeditorz7754 lmao sameeeee
This solo is underrated as hell. I think it's because it's so short. Hetfield has an amazing ear for melody, definitely better than Kirk's.
It’s not underrated it’s like one of the most popular guitar solo ever! But yeah it is a legendary solo and it will never get old
Underrated? 💀
Such a beautiful and dramatic song! Thx Carl for an awesome lesson!
This man literally have 0 haters, and its totally understandable why. Thank you man.
Carl you do the best lessons on UA-cam man, keep up the awesome work!
0:44 I replayed that so many times!!!
Yeah that translation is tough for me too
This dude can make any song easy! I love these videos
I love Carl's face at 0:22. He's looks like "Damn, that's a hell of a sound", then right after "No, wait. Gotta look cool for the video." 🤣
Thank you sir for the lesson! Im practicing this solo for a week now and still can master it. I need patience. No quitting now
"Not the Band, the actual train".. Hahaha
+Abhishek Subbaiah he said "Not the bend, the actual train"
+thebastard gamer Nope he said band
Jacob Goodman
he said BEND it was a thing on guitar where you reach high pitch tones by bending the string. There's half bend and full bend.
+thebastard gamer I'm fairly certain all of us know what a half bend, full bend, pre bend etc. is.
He said, "for the train effect", i.e. the doppler effect we experience when a train passes by, and then proceeded to say "not the band (i.e. Train), the actual train.
Even if one were to hear what he said as 'bend' and not 'band', the statement wouldn't make sense, since we're using an oblique bend to get the effect anyway.
Gee, I'm not laughing at this anymore - having to defend comments on UA-cam sucks the living joy out of everything!!
God damn it, i'm stupid, thanks for clarifying it. I was thinking of the exact opposite of what he really said.
Thank you very much for the lesson. I am learning it. Your tutorials are great!!!
Excellent tutorial man! Classic song perfectly delivered...Rock on brother ;)
Highly appreciated the way to play a tutorial Carl ...thank you thank you..

Best guitar lesson
Perfect. Thanks very very much.
Very helpful thanks
Thank you so much for sharing this lesson, Presley. You're a great guitarist and an excellent theacher as well.
Great video! just minor correction that somebody might find useful: at 3:32 you incorrectly say "15, 14 on G then to 15, 14, 12 on G" which is not what you are doing in your intro - you are doing 15 on G then 12 on B and then 15, 14, 12 on G. I figured it out from slowing down your video and looking at what you are doing in the 0:29-0:31 mark.
Thanks 4 the lesson
you make my day thnx to you! next time try to put a tab on the video or the description if you can ^^ thnx anyway
I would LOVE that!! Do it please!!!
Thank u very much mr
Great Lesson!!!
Can you please do a lesson on Toto-Africa and Hold the Line??
Not the band, the actual train. hahahaha that was funny xD
not the band , the actual train ...
hahahahahah :3 i love your channel !
Awesome video! This guy is a excellent teacher. Would love to know what effects are being used in the video??
Can someone explain to me how he maneges to make his hammer ons and pull offs so loud each i do them they so quiet that i have to pick the string again to make it sound louder
Turn your gain up or buy another guitar
Mine first solo thanks to you :)
thanks for share
thank you my sensei
Thank you now i can play the solo
i remember trying to learn this when I was ten. I only played like ten of the actually notes, basically only summarized the solo lol. now its really easy, it used to feel like a super fast shredded solo now its really slow.
So the first bit of anything I ever learned how to play was the first like eleven seconds of the intro to this song on a warped acoustic and it took me two weeks to learn it. That's why I picked this video to drop this long ass comment on. I'm sorry about the length but I had tried sending a message on Facebook but couldn't find another more direct way to reach out.
I can't expect you to remember this, but you and I exchanged a couple emails a long while back, and I'd mentioned to you that at one point in my life I was doing badly and while in rehab I began messing around on guitar a bit and I stumbled on one of your lessons. In the six months I was there you taught me a ridiculous amount of songs in the most effective and helpful way, and to this day if I ever find myself wanting to learn a song but all of the available tutorials aren't yours then 9 times out of 10 I just decide to move onto something else. Which is actually sort of why I'm contacting you again sort of. I already subscribed to your channel and I'm also a paid member or whatever at this point. I also plan on checking out what kind of stuff is in your store as well because like I said you played a huge part in changing my life around completely so whatever I can do to support you and your channel I'm happy to do it. Anyway though man I'm sure there's probably a different way to have gone about asking this, and I also know you must be pretty busy generally, but I was wanting to ask if you ever end up finding the time to put into it and you're also interested, could you maybe do a lesson on I Stay Away by Alice in Chains? I've occasionally browsed for a tutorial for that one and even bit the bullet and watched them but all the videos I've found have either been how the person thinks it goes when it's definitely not it, or it's incomplete. I've been wanting to learn it for so long now and I know if anyone is gonna teach me the right way to play that song it'll be you. But hey if not that's totally cool to man I appreciate you taking the time to even read this. The email that my channel membership is under is cuckdarcinal@gmail.com is that's relevant. I hope things are going well with you, thanks again, and take care
Yeah I will definitely look into that one. Sounds like there is a lot going on with the 12 string guitar plus some pretty odd riffs on the electric. I will do my best though 🤘
FLAWLESS!
"Not the band, the actual train" got me
Thank you
Thank u sir🙌🙌
Am I the only one who doesn't understand the last part of the solo after the slide bit. Feels like it doesn't make sense to me 😐
Your fret fingies are pressing on them string real funky like. Always think your on the D when ur on the G (strings )
Thanks 4 the lesson . what are chords on the nice rock riff at the intro of your video ?
can u say wats Ur amp setting
Found it thanks
dang man!!!! you're as good as the original!
You are too good !!!
so if i listen to it right, the melody actualy are the low notes played in the chorus? (D,D, second fret A-string and third-second and open E)?
can you do anything from children of bodom? like Everytime I die?
what tone should i use for my epiphone?
+
my high e snapped a few days ago and my guitar is in drop C, I guess won't be doing this one for a while

Your tone is amazing. Can you share what pedal you are using or amp settings?
My first solo!!!🙌
This solo is so hard for me to do on my acoustic guitar. Wish I bought an electric instead
Sir what kind of a string you use on your guitar its like a garter that looks really smooth. Can i install it on my acoustic guitar?
omg can you do 5sos she looks so perfect
I dunno why but the way his face looks and how he says “not the band, a actual train” is really funny to me XD
Love
Which guitar pedal Synth should we be using for this?
It blow my mind that this was made when I was in first grade. I am currently a freshman in highschool. Wtf
5:43
may I know which pedal effect that you did use to play this solo?
Soothsayer plzzzzz
Why does everyone pull down when doing vibrato and bends on the G and B strings?. I was taught somewhere that you're supposed to bend up on the 3 high strings, and pull down on the 3 low strings.. I've been playing for roughly 5 years, and vibrato and bends really piss me off.
Hey Carl! Phenomenal stuff mate. Is that an Ibanez?
Carl never ages
hey i didn’t pick up on the second bend is it 14 and 15 or 14 and 12
