    How to line up new door to existing hinges? Can't find anything about this

    • @HouseDoctorRay
      @HouseDoctorRay  9 годин тому

      You do it just like in this video. Allow for an 1/8" gap at the top and measure carefully for existing hinge position. Alternatively you could take a long board like a 2x4 or a piece of molding to transfer the hinge spacing to the new door. This is how I would do it because there is much less chance for error.

    Header stop first, then style stops and no pencil marks.

    How much should some one charge to hang 3 doors just like that the doors were installed prehung back in 2010 and I want to replace the doors exactly like you did and ball park what will some one charge

    • @HouseDoctorRay

      Depends on where you live. I would think it would be $100 a door labor.
      You can check homewyse.com to get an idea of costs in your area.

      Thank you I am in Maryland what’s the going rate for a Pre hung door wondering the doors are actually prehung when they were installed because my home was built started in 2009 and finished in 2010 shows the original doors are pre hung doors
      I want the different style door if I wasn’t sick with this Lyme disease I would go out and buy the tools like you have and do it my self it looks really easy your video is great hit the nail on the head one showing someone how to do it their selves if they choose to I watched a few other videos and yours definitely was the best👍👍👍👍👍

      Thanks! Again, check out Homewyse, their estimates are pretty close to what you can expect to pay. Looks like Maryland is more expensive than where I live.

    Im trying to replace the cheap hollowcore doors with raised panal doors just like you did in this vid. The only problem i have run into is each of these cheap ass contractor grade doors are a differant size widths and i dont know what to buy at the store. All the doors seem to come in even size widths. I guess i will need to take the doors to the store with me and find the closest width and attempt to cut them down.

      Measure just the door, not the opening. A 32" door is going to be slightly less than 32". Doors are also sometimes labeled differently.
      A 32" door might be labeled 2-8 for 2 foot 8 inches. A 3-0 door is 3 feet or 36".
      Ripping a door down to width is tricky business and you definitely need a straight edge. You should also take half off of each side. For example if you need it ½" narrower you should take a ¼" off of each side.
      Some people recommend an angled cut on the knob side. I personally never worried about that.

    Love this. Two questions. First why do the door stops need to be bowed away from the door? Second, I have an old door with a deadbolt bore that is much smaller than the standard 2 1/8" bore we use today. I recently bought one of the jig kits you used in this video to widen the bore so I could change out the deadbolt, but I chickened out on using it because I've heard they're prone to break and I'm afraid to damage the door. But then I saw you use this kit with very little preparation. Am I being overly cautious? Or have you hung a lot of doors and I'm right to be concerned since I've never done it?

      If you put the door stop flat against the door when the door bows with seasonal movement it will either rattle or not close. By just using the top and bottom as contact points the door closes better.
      If you're working on an exterior door that is a different story because you have weather stripping.
      I wouldn't use a knob jig to make an existing hole bigger. I would drill the desired size hole in a piece of 3/4 plywood. Then clamp that in place to guide the holesaw. You need something substantial to hold the holesaw in line when you don't have a pilot bit engaged.

    How near to the top should a door be? 1/8 inch?

    • @HouseDoctorRay
      @HouseDoctorRay  3 місяці тому

      Yes, an 1/8" top and both sides is ideal.

    Did you bevel the door? I am replacing all the interior doors in my house and most other videos discuss beveling the edge of the door for a better fit. Did you not do this?

    • @HouseDoctorRay
      @HouseDoctorRay  Рік тому +1

      If you're working with standard size doors you'll find they fit just fine.
      In an older house built before pre hung doors you may need to bevel the door to get a good fit.
      Best thing to do is mortise for the hinges and hang the door first. Then you'll see if a bevel is needed.

    This is a great video but I think for a standard home owner that is mostly handy, I think a pre hung door might be the easiest route- at least for me who doesn’t want to get the extra tools and set needed

    • @HouseDoctorRay
      @HouseDoctorRay  2 місяці тому

      Really depends. Yes you would need a router and the hinge jig but replacing just the door is much easier than properly setting a door jamb and reinstalling the door casing.

    isnt the hinge symetrical? can you do conduit bending?

    • @HouseDoctorRay
      @HouseDoctorRay  2 роки тому +1

      Yes they're symmetrical but I routed them to hange the door on the other side.
      Not sure what conduit bending has to do with anything. Are you suggesting I do a video on that?

    The hinge jig leaves two screw holes in the side of the door !!?? What a terrible design.

    How do you get the hinge cutout into the door jamb? You left out the most important part.

    • @HouseDoctorRay
      @HouseDoctorRay  Рік тому

      This video was about just replacing the door in an existing jamb. However, you just use the same jig on the door jamb. Just screw it in place and route for the hinges.

    Pretty good- one of the most detailed videos for door I have found - Need more details at 3:04 please- I did not get how to get router depth - how can I make hinge cuts without a router ? Is there a drill bit ? Thanks

    • @HouseDoctorRay
      @HouseDoctorRay  2 роки тому

      You could use a forstner bit for the rounded corners but depth would be tricky. There are other jigs out there but this kit is very easy to use.
