I went immediately to my exterior doors to see if they had the adjustable cap, and they don't. I have used door sweeps for our eighty year old house, but I would have been floored if all that I had to do is adjust it. The painters tape trick itself would have made so many jobs easier. If I'm the only one who didn't know this stuff, then I must be living under a rock😂! Thanks for always having very helpful content for losers like me!
Don't worry, Lumberjack, I've figured all this out the hard way myself! And it was often on job sites with the client watching. 😅 There's always more to learn!
Sir, don't put yourself down like that, you're not a loser. We're all just learning as we go along the path of our lives. And all of us who came here to watch this video are here for that reason, to learn. Peace.
🎉 Yes I have to agree with this chap it’s said ( If you don’t ask you don’t get “ whether it’s DIY/ Directions / Or understanding the fundamentals keeping your car running “ )
Love the fact that you ALWAYS pay attention to detail & your instructions are straight & to the point . A TRUE craftsman !! Keep up the good work Ethan !!
Excellent video! Very thorough with good craftsmanship. I was taught about doors from an expert in the 1960s. Working in a manufacturing building where many fire rated doors were improperly installed on concrete block walls. The door rep spent several days working on the doors while training me how to adjust doors. I would suggest that a proper alignment of the door should be done prior to reworking the threshold area. Poor alignment is a major cause of gasket deterioration. During my years as a contractor, I supervised or even installed hundreds of doors and even adjusted an 8’x3’6” door this week. The dragging door damaged the weather strip and made it difficult to open, close and lock. I am disappointed that nearly ever door in my new house had to be adjusted! I would recommend that every installer study this video.
That’s a very good point, Weldon! I’m definitely going to cover the badly hung door topic. So many things can be fixed at the hinge or hinge-side jamb!
One thing i would recommend on installing door sweeps is sealing the bottom of the door, if its a snap in sweep at least use sealant on the ends to prevent water intrusion around the tabs.
Thank you! All the doors in my house were installed way too close to the floor to clear my rugs and with non-adjustable thresholds. Cutting down the doors and making my own taller caps is a great idea. No one does videos about what to do if doors are too low for rugs, don’t people need rugs inside their doors?? Perhaps you can make a video about this next?
I came upon your UA-cam video accidentally, boy it came in good i had a similar situation. I immediately joined your channel. Looking forward to seeing what other videos you will do. It's good to know for a single woman. BLESSINGS 🙌
Oh my gosh!! I have the adjustable caps!! Did front and back door. No more drafts. Quick and easy and even taught my husband something he didn’t know existed!
These are great tips, and your custom one look both easy and good. My door has the bubble gasket that you talked about at 1:14 despite being residential. In my case, the "normal" size one was too small and the "large" one was too big. So I got the large one and then used about a dozen screws to squish it down to the correct height.
This video was just what we needed to see and even a link to the replacement door sweeps (ours got damaged when we built our house and contractors put their electrical cords through closed doors). Thank you 👍
This is very useful information. I like how easy for me to follow the instructions and fix my own door gap even though I never held a drill in my hands my entire life.
Awesome video! Very informative . I need to replace my front door sweep and now I know what I need to look for . Thank you for making the video and for all the great information!
More terrific content passing on experience, products, techniques and video demos for a super-common problem. I can't wait for your next course to drop!
I do this all the time on doors. Point of order, different millworks can use bottoms with different groove spacing. I keep several varieties in my van and if all else fails I have flat ones. A very helpful and accurate video. I am a specialty door carpenter and I approve this message 100%
Questions about a slotted sweep replacement- our door is an inside swing, does this matter on which new sweep to buy? Also some of the replacements have one bubble, two bubbles, or just several flanges sticking down, does it matter which one? Thank you for your input.
Great video. I shared with someone I know that has gap issues with their front door. My hope is that this will give them the confidence to do the repair on their own. Thanks!
My house is old so the door threshold is literally stretched and moving away from door. So I've replaced the sweep mutiple times, so I appreciate a longer lasting solution. 👷🏿♂️
Thanks, W! I’ve lived in multiple houses with wooden thresholds. I’ve had to use all combinations of solutions. 😅 I’ll post a vid on full threshold replacement someday as well! It can vary so much by the different scenarios.
Good informative video, Ethan. It addresses gaps at the bottom of the exterior door. Maybe you will make another video addressing other gaps around the exterior door and doors that are cockeyed in the door frame. Keep 'em coming, Ethan. 👍
Outstanding video. Wish I would have seen it 2 weeks ago. I did manage to get the correct sweep on my exterior door since I had a worn out one as well. But your video was so extremely thorough and your discussions about all the various options was incredible. Signing up now for your newsletter!! Thank you!
Great vid and I learned a lot. Would love to see how to troubleshoot doors that are too wide or two narrow for their door gaps. I have a storm door that is too wide as well as one that is too narrow in the house I moved into recently.
Thank you! I'll see what I can do on that. I've added wood furring strips to door perimeters to make them bigger, and it has worked pretty well before. Especially if it gets painted!
Good video Ethan .. just an added FYI always treat the bottom side of self made sweeps you didn’t show it but I’m really sure that you did … keep up the great videos and how to’s 🇺🇸👊🏼👊🏼✌🏼
Awesome upload that will help me to change or install. Suspect insects like ants are invading my inside home !!! Ur vid might help prevent those pests n solve the problem. Kudos for vid. Will be watching ur vid on GAPS btwn door.. Peace
Great video! Very informative! Great video and explanations to show and explain all that you were doing! Love your channel! Thanks for making this video! I need to do this at my home!
Nice helpful video as I've been wrestling with a gap issue on my front door after trimming it to clear a new entrance mat. The only thing I would comment on, is if for some reason the door itself isn't square, (on older houses it may have been trimmed to fit a door frame that's moved), transferring a top edge measurement to the bottom edge width may not be correct.
That was great im on the process of reworked mi frame ,& rework my door in bad shape probably 50 years old ,this will help me on how to install thresh hold & sweep
I didn't know that some thresh holds had adjustments you could raise or lower the height. But I did use an piece of wood to raise up a gap on a door. That made a world of difference and solved my problem. Thanks for sharing the other options to fix the problem. 👍
Would love some advice on what to do when you’ve adjusted the cap all the way down and the new sweep is too tight. This seems to be the case whenever I put on new sweeps. Will it get better over time? Door is set fine.
Thanks for the video and your time making them! I have tried the single flap thing - just purchased a full slide-on to replace it. Can't wait for how to replace the whole threshold! Can the custom one be adjusted also (seasonally)? Every spring my door scrapes horridly (wet) - can't hardly open it; every summer (dry) there is a crack large enough on that end to let small mammals in - I keep adjusting the flap thing - no adjustable part. Also, I have an old house facing west. The thick laminate on the front door is pealing on the bottom 9-10" - I am considering getting flashing to make a toe-kick - I could buy a toe-kick but they all are 2" short and if I do 'bondo' type repairs, it will need to be covered edge-to-edge. Think it will work?
Thanks for watching! I see what you're saying about the toe kick being too small. Flashing maaay work...but it might be a bit too soft. It'll get banged up pretty easily. That's a tricky one. I'd maybe scour the internet for the largest toe-kick you can find, then seal the places around it really hard with something like spar urethane!
Good and useful video. Do you have any suggestions for my garage door sweep. The rubber in the door sweep keeps getting chewed by the mice. The wood in the corners are chewed up too. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
Great channel, another informative video. Is there a fix for an interior door that is too high from the finished wood floor? Carpet was replaced AFTER the door was fitted. Asking for a 'friend'
Thanks Jason! I’ve added an extra piece of material (pine usually) to a door bottom to lengthen it. Literally just fit one to the door dimensions, glue and shoot it to the bottom, wood fill, sand and paint. It’ll vanish right in that way!
Great video. I suspect I'm going to be dealing with this in a few years. I've got a newer house and it's settling and throwing things off - particularly the doorknob latch catching on the plate in the door frame. When the weather changes it won't catch right unless you apply considerable pressure upwards or downward, essentially moving it into place. Would you recommend me moving the plate up or down so the swelling isn't enough to completely misalign the catch? TBH I'm surprised it's doing this. I'd think this is maybe the most important part of the installation.
I have this problem on my front door, and I just routed out the plate with a dremel and made the hole bigger. Moving it is kind of a pain, and in my case it would just need to be moved back when drought conditions change.

My garage door has dry rot all the way around it because it faces south. I need suggestions on how to remove it and how to fix it. Thanks for your good suggestions on how to get better door sweeps. 👍
Thanks for the video, but I have a side door to my garage that has about a 1.75” gap and there is NO threshold. What would you suggest in this situation? An extra tall sweep or do I need to add a whole threshold to the cement floor where there is none (the garage floor is flush to the outside walkway)? Thanks!
One of my exterior doors is thin and none of the sweeps would fit (too thick). So I cut one side (basically toward the middle) and squeezed them both together to the thickness of the door. So far so good!! Great ideas and solutions. Thanks for showing all these ways. One more thing to add to my list of 1000 things to do😭
That’s a great fix, lioness! I highly advocate for people making their own solutions. In the end, every house is so different, we often have to improvise. I’ve got an interesting video coming in the newsletter this week about that! 😄
Dang it. The one thing I wanted to know is discussed at the end and in a different video. 😂. I do also plan on replacing my sweeps. Thanks for the vid.
The ant running across the threshold was cute. 12:20 🐜 I have a vintage wooden exterior door that's also interior (condo), which was cut down for carpet and padding, now removed. I'll try the L-shaped sweep. Thanks!
7 years I’ve dealt with a gap under my front door so large that bugs could walk through it and I just adjusted the sill piece and closed the gap in about three seconds. Thank you for this video.
I was just thinking about a house-door-sized version of the garage door 'sealers' - the squeezable rubber that sticks to the floor and tightly seals against the door. Is there such a thing?
I've had thoughts like that too before, Paul. But I've found that the flexible gap sealers on the market are often too soft--they tend to peel off or get destroyed. It's just so tricky to get something that stands up to that much foot traffic!
I fixed the gaps on the bottom of my main door half year ago. However, I still have gaps on the top. Should I use the same thing on the top? Also my corners also have gaps (top and bottom, handle side).
8:20 If the slots are too low just drill your own holes through the sweep into the door near the top. There is no law that says you have to use the slots.
I had a contractor come over and completely replace my front door the trim and the storm door. The storm door has a flange that does not reach the end of the door so there’s a half an inch hole there where it blows cold air. What can I do?

Nice. I think I'd only make the oak custom cap if I had a wood trimmed door. For most standard exterior doors, I'd go with PVC.
I considered PVC…but I’d definitely go with the hardened kind! Similar to what they make window nosings from.

8:20 If the slots are too low just drill your own holes through the sweep into the door near the top. There is no law that says you have to use the slots.
That’s a good point, Wayne 😆
Great video and info thanks for sharing
Thanks, God bless you!
Excellent video, Ethan.
Thanks, Marmalade! 😄
I had a contractor come over and completely replace my front door the trim and the storm door. The storm door has a flange that does not reach the end of the door so there’s a half an inch hole there where it blows cold air. What can I do?
this is very useful info, thanks!
Glad it helps, Leo!
