    When replacing an existing door I like to place the old door next to the new door with the tops flush and use a square and a pencil to transfer the hinge locations on to the new door.

    What a great display of craftsmanship, camera work & description of process. Thank you well done. Problem for me is door height of 71" on older home closet entrance. All doors 80". Wanted 6 panel door but could not make a clean cut w/o cutting into panels so used a blank. Your video really helped. Thanks a bunch! Subscribed.....

    Ryobi has a great kit for this that cuts the entire area. I believe it’s $35 so if you’ve got a few doors to do it’ll save you time.

    Fabulous. I thank you for laying things out so eloquently. I love your little 'tricks/tips' (eg: using painter's tape to mark the right side of the door and measurements). I've subscribed and looking forward to more of your guidance/teachings as I commence my own woodworking ventures. Thanks kindly... Mike from Ontario, Canada

    I have to go along with making a template. Cut out of a large enough piece of 1/4" baltic birch or masonite, there will be good support for the router. Use a cleanout bit.

    Love this video. We want to move our bathroom door so that it opens outward instead of in, as our ensuite bathriom is really small. I don't know if we need to change the hinges in the door, but I know we need to change where the hinge on the door jam will go. Do you have a video of how you put the recess on the jam? Do you just measurement along the door jam like you did alomg the door? Also, where did you get the poplar wood for using as a guide? Can you buy it or did you just cut it out to the dimensions you wanted? PS great content! So measured in your delivery, clear snd concise!

    Regarding locating the hinges. If you took your measurements from an existing door in your house, and assuming that that door does not ride up tight against the top jam, then those measurements already provide for the 1/8 inch gap from the top of the slab to the jam. Therefore, with that already built in, why do you need to add a shim to the top of your slab when you transfer the measurements?

    • @austinhastings8793
      @austinhastings8793 4 роки тому +1

      I think he took his measurements from the jamb top, not the top of the door.

    How did you mark the jam? How did you place the door in the opening and Mark the hinges on the jam with spacing you wanted?

    • @austinhastings8793
      @austinhastings8793 4 роки тому

      Based on his comments when discussing the position of the hinges, I think his hinge numbers are based on measuring down from the top corner of the opening. So I would guess he just made the same measurements down the jamb for the openings. That said, when I try tricks like that I'm always a bit off, so I think I'd do it by putting the door (complete with top spacer) into the opening upright, wedging it up against the top of the jamb, and marking the hinge locations with a knife.

    • @dalyclose7815

      Yea most people would make a jig or use an edge guide attachment to avoid slipping out of the line. Freehanding like this guy did is very risky.

    Put low speed with a bigger quality bit and two hands for better control , most important practice again and again. Once you are done 100 hinges, you will forget what the jig is.

    what do you do about the door stops on the door jams?

    • @morokeiboethia6749
      @morokeiboethia6749 Рік тому

      The door stop stripping is just nailed (use a finish or brad nailer gun / nail size) to the jamb. You don't have to route any groove or anything to attach that. It just flat stacks on the jamb on all 3 sides of the jamb (left, right, top). Hang your door first and make sure the door is shut and plunger is in the latch hole. Install the horizontal strip on the top of the jamb first then do the left/right vertical strips. Just bring the strip up to the door and lightly touch the door or you can crack it back a tiny bit if you want b/c you might want to caulk it then paint it. Dont go heavy on the caulk or the caulk can prevent the door from closing all the way.

    top tip - screw the hinge into position and drag your blade around it, half the time, pricise cut ✌🏻

    I replaced 11 doors in my house; just remove the old door and transfer the measurements to the new door by laying one on top of the other.
    If measuring, use the metric system…….so much easier.

    No one hanging doors for a living free hand cuts with a router, they use a router jig. I have hung more doors than I can remember with a hammer and chisel for cutting mortises.

    Using a router without a template or edge guide is very risky. Very very easy to lose control of the router and cut outside the line.

    I would think that if you're going to make a how to video, you would show every last step of the process completely, and not jump to the finished result which was done off camera. Just seems kinda pointless to me.

    Ryobi sell a hinge template that makes this dead simple. But if you don't want to buy the template for a single job, use your knife to cut around the hinge, lightly at first, don't do it free hand. Then carefully run the router up to the cut line, no need for a chisel. Use a bigger router bit. Good intentions, but your demonstration looks very amateurish
