So glad I watched this....I’m about to change 8 doors in my house and I’ve never done one before but you’ve given me the confidence that I could do a decent job....nice one
This video says March 26 but Jeff has a tan. I think it was made the summer before. Thanks for this Jeff. We are renovating a house we bought "as-is" last April. We were able to buff up all the doors except one. This video was a great help in getting a blank door ready to hang.
I used to use a circular saw with a guide set to about 3/16" and trim the lock side of the door the entire length, only takes a minute, no plane, sanding etc. Gives a nice gap all around. Router the hinges too.
I've done several interior door swaps due to previous owner damage etc. I use a template and a router, makes very fast and accurate hinge installs. I still enjoyed the video using a chisel though.
Very good, thx. I would also mention that the time of year is significant. Installing during a humid summer day? Make the fit as snug as you can. Installing in the dry winter? Give it some breathing room.
I don't understand your comment at ~3:49 regarding the door has an inside and outside - shorter side and longer side. How do we determine which is which?
In the UK we have to flip between imperial and metric measurements because some building materials come in either of these. I wish you would do the same for people outside America. Good job
Wonderful demonstration and it boosted my confidence. I just installed a door using these steps and it worked great! I even learned how to use a planer. Thank you and well done!
Already did my first two doors by watching some of your older videos. I'll be sure to to watch this one. Your videos are awesome for a newbie such as I.
Bought a house month ago. Installed two pre hung doors. Door was old and both had history of being kicked in. But this video help me with just doing doors on rest of the house.
Hi. Thank you for all the wonderful and informative videos. I do wish that i cal could be so handy like you as a female 😊. Watching your video, I do have questions but I’m going to try to follow exactly what you do ☺️. I did purchase 2 new slab doors to update our current old looking doors. I purchased the standard size and sure needed to trim it down to fit the right size. To purchase a custom door cost more so I’m trying to just trim it myself. The saw that you use, can you share the info so that I can purchase one for the future door change too. I still got about 10 more doors to update. Thank you and more helpful videos to come please. God Bless 🙏🏽
Do yourself a favor and get two 1-1/2 chisels. That way you have a spare sharp one when one gets dull. I use a variety of chisels in my carpentry business including a 2-1/2 x 8" slick for cleaning up notches in 6x6 posts. All sharp enough to shave with.
I really enjoy watching your videos at 430am lol. I wished my husband could do home renovations in our apartment. I've learned a lot from watching your channel. Keep up the good work 👏
thanx jeff, couldnt come at a better time, they just delivered my first two interior doors, one with full surface and one with glass will be falling back from time to time on this video, cheers
My chisels just got delivered yesterday and this is my next project. Thank you for posting all of the tips! My house is 100 years old and has the original everything. You've saved me so many times bc you share so much experience with us!
I would suggest the hinge template and a router over manually clearing it out. You get a factory like finish, it’s faster, and is one less thing that can get messed up.
Ryobi makes a kit to cut the hinge mortises and hole for the knob. I believe it’s designed to reference off the original door (if you have it). Would be a time saver if you’re doing a lot of doors but if it’s just one, maybe not worth the money. Requires a router.
Hi and thank you for the great videos about drywall and all the tips and tricks. This video is full of information also, but it would be great to show all the steps needed for replacing a door in a brick wall. Telling a brick wall I mean a good old fashion internal thick plaster which makes a 25sm brick wall extend to 31-33sm at total. How to remove the old frame to minimize the damage on the plaster. How to shim and fix the new door frame and how to restore the damaged parts of the wall plaster. Once again - thank you for the all effort you give in making theese videos.
Hey just want to say thank you for all your videos! I am looking at buying a older home that needs a lot of cosmetic fixes: repaint, new windows, and new doors. Your videos are changing my perspective from oh crap this is going to be an insanely expensive and intense project to this is something I can handle. Keep being kick ass and awesome!
10:00 'These chisels aren't in the best of shape..." oh yeah? You just did your cut out w/o a hammer! They're fyyyyyyne! LOL Great tip re using the driver bit to set the hole location for screws. REALLY good camera work. Excellent workmanship.
This is why you never chisel lengthwise at the hinge and the surface veneer. 13:43 I've cut a few doors like you have here. I don't feel so bad about my results. I found them to look substantially better by using a router and template to cut those hinges in. It may not have worked as well here because your door jambs were square, but by using the router, all you'd need to do is cut the rounded corners with the chisel square again. As far as the door goes, your planing of the door goes pretty fast, given your experience you have no problems I'm sure. I use a circ saw guide and just set it to the depth I need and get exactly what I want cut off. Perfect to my line every time.
I strongly believe one should attack the frame before the door (assuming you're okay with repainting it) in order to get a good fit. Otherwise, the next door replacement will require door trimming again. Get the frame cleaned up, and any standard door will fit.
Also there might be nails or screws in the jamb that secure the jamb to the rough frame. Also if it's an exterior door, attacking the frame weakens the structure and the latching integrity.
Jeff, don’t change. You’re great!!! Absolutely my favorite!!! I cannot click on your vids fast enough and always watch to the end. I will often watch many times simply because you pack so much great info in I dont want to miss even one detail!!!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😁😁😁😁😁 Also, if I were younger and you were not happily married to a lovely woman, this ole gal would have to move to Canada!!! 😜❤️
Old hinges would work but if you’re already getting a new door why not put on some fresh hinges? But if they were relatively new hinges I can’t see why they wouldn’t.
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY Had both bathrooms remodeled...then 4 weeks a clog in sewage line from house to street....UGH.....roto rooter destroyed my home during their tear out.....all put back and so happy to have my house back.

Jeff, I'm sure you have run into jobs that had a current (or past) DIY failure, specifically drywall. How about a video repairing failed jobs? Such as fiberglass patches, bulging, and flashing? Cheers!

@@HomeRenoVisionDIY Yes sir! If it's only 1 or 2 doors, chisel all day. That is until I finally make myself buy the cordless palm that my Makita batteries are screaming for!
For this summer i have a suggestion, if its in your line of awesomness …. what about different ways to do a pathway in the back yard to those awesome decks you built?
LOL, If not this summer then next summer for sure. we will tackle the outside living space with stone patio lighting and a custom made hot tub. Cheers!
Oh, Jeff! I wanted to ask you a question concerning an entry door. In the Summer, I can't turn the bolt lock so that it extends and enters into the door casing metal plate. In the Winter, it turns and locks fine! I know it has something to do with expand and contract but how do I fix the problem? Do I need to move the metal door casing plate and somehow figure out if I should slide it up or down to line up with the metal bolt part that slides & enters into the plate to lock the door? (the metal extender bolt strikes the metal door plate in the Summer) And if so, how do I go about finding out in which direction (up or down) I should move it? Oh, and will I need to use wood filler or something in the current screw holes in the door's casing now that I may only need to slide it up or down by a few centimeters which, I assume, will make the current holes too large? Or should I make two new holes in the plate and door casing so that the wood for the screws are viable? I thought that maybe if I put lipstick on the tip of the bolt and turn it, it would show me where it's hitting, up or down on the door casing plate? Yes? No? Please HELP! (🤔)
Hi! If you open the door and then extend the bolt you can use a pencil to mark the height. this will tell you if the door needs to be rotated by adjusting the depth of the hinges. If that is good then you will need to remove the strike plate and put a few toothpicks in the existing holes. trim the m and install the strike plate just a little closer to the interior by placing the screw just a tough to the interior and re install. This can be done as many times as necessary to get it just right. This sounds like a great video idea. Thanks! Let me know if this helps. Cheers!
Just did an install like you're doing here and left a 1/8th in gap at the top as you did. Unfortunately, the customer could see a crack at the top of the door because the old doorstop was too thin. Try as I could, They saw it as my cutting the door short. There's no pleasing some people
It would be nice to have a link to the jig you used to cut the hole for the knob. Also, please, a little more information on planing the width of the door. Not quite sure what you mean about not stopping part way through, assume that means to keep going no matter what. Also, what if the door doesn't yet have a bevel. What do you do?

Should I change the whole door or try to straighten the door to save hassle? Not sure how to straighten it out other than putting weight on the warped end? Please help thanks.
As a licensed builder your better off to plan half way on the door and to plan to the middle from the other end that way you wont chip off the corner you are ripping.
The problem is I live in a house from the 1930s and the frame and strike plate is completely different from new ones so I have to get a whole new assembly and new door
Hey Jeff, you say not to stop and start when using the planer, but how would you recover if you DID have to stop midway, whether to reposition or for whatever reason? Start again from the other edge?
Make a pencil line either side of the door for reference before starting and definitely do not push all the way along the ends of the doors with the planer otherwise the door stiles will chip looking like an amateur has done it.
I served my apprenticeship as a carpenter in England and was taught in imperial 8ths and 16ths etc, I still use it along side metric it depends on the situation. Carpentry imperial, kitchen installation metric. Keeping the old school alive.

Planning the door is far easier than planning the jam otherwise you'd have to remove the door stop or use a manual planer.
Also there might be nails or screws in the jamb that secure the jamb to the rough frame. Also if it's an exterior door, attacking the frame weakens the structure and the latching integrity.

Any chance you could show me how to convert a bifold closet door into a pair of 15" french doors for a closet? I guess I would use a magnet catch?
Flippin Ech....going to hang a door today....need to purchase some tools n stuff me thinks 😮
I would come from the other side and maybe dial back a 32nd. finish with a belt sander. Cheers!
In Brazil we use a palm router for the hinges.
That works too. Cheers to Brazil! BTW Love the Ipe decking. Cheers!

Hey Jeff can you do a video on installing a 12x24 Vinyl in the future? Thanks a ton!
sounds plausible, however it is the same as any other size tile. snap and click and the odd pound. Cheers!
Nicely explained...

It would-be be so much easier if america goes metric also 😂 but nice diy tutorial again.....greetings again from the Netherlands
I kind of like dealing with small numbers at this point. plus it keep the mind sharp doing fraction all day long. Cheers to the Netherlands!
I served my apprenticeship as a carpenter in England and was taught in imperial 8ths and 16ths etc, I still use it along side metric it depends on the situation. Carpentry imperial, kitchen installation metric. Keeping the old school alive.
Thanks! I've been thinking about doing this!
Cheers Jason, glad to help!
