Hey everyone! This video was a long time in the making. We're modding up Rumblin Man's Squier Affinity Jazz! I've been sitting on this bass for a while, and we've finally had the time to mod this bass. We'll be replacing the pickups, control plate (installing a preamp!) and bridge to transform this budget squier into a beastly bass. Let's do this!

I like the sounds of it both pre and post mod. The biggest difference to me is now with the preamp installed, it has more treble and punch, like most active J-basses. I agree, the preamp with the bass and low mids boosted does really kick up that B string as well!
Very nice. I just bought a few years old Burgundy Mist Affinity Jazzy that was pre-modded with Quarter Pounders, a Bad Ass bridge and full size pots. And I just bought a new Charcoal Affinity P+J bass. I already have a set of Alnico P and ceramic J pickups from EMG waiting to drop in. I'm pretty excited.
I have a bass by squier affinity jazz bass 5 string. I bought a bass near a guitar shop, which is Anson Music from Ipoh. it's been two years.. awesome bro..
Bassist from Malaysia.
I really like that preamp. I have one in a cheapie jazz five that I put bartolini pickups in. It's great. Mine has the three position Z switch on it. Really can do anything
Well modded. I know he will really enjoy those mods.
Affinity J Bass 5’s are a great modding platform. Even something as simple as shimming the neck yields great improvement.
The new mods gave it a cleaner sound & the preamp gave it that good thump
Excellent Lobster is showing Before mods then with mods so you can hear the difference. I would have put in hum cancelling pickups. Nice work, Mr Lobster! Perhaps if the person bought a Sire V3 over the Affinity, it would have not been necessary to modify the V3 so cost would have been much lower than mods.
Modded my 70s Classic vibe with emg BTC preamp and shielded all cavities with copper foil. Sounds great with the treble in off off position. maintained the vol vol preamp setup and had to get a 5 hole control plate
I dig the shirt!
Great upgrades, it sounds a lot better, crispier, punchier
With both pick-ups both dialed in you can really improvement! Must satisfying. Nice 😍
Rumblin man, Lowend Lobster, Big Bottom Penguin...the nicknames 😂
I’m a rumbling man today. Must have been last night’s beans.
I thought the Affinity Jazz Bass as demoed are the beginning sounded pretty darn good, and the pickups sounded appropriate in their respective configurations, although lacking a bit of top-end chime and clarity and depth of tone.
I’d say if the bass, acoustically rang like a bell without many dead spots, but was just let down by the electronics, this was money for mods was fairly well-spent.
that thing sounds good man
Nice!! So much better! I love it without the pickguard!! I am not a pickguard kinda guy! I already took mine of my NG3 lol I’ll post pics on discord i this his bass needs new clover tuners
Excellent yet again great choices. Bass looks better no pickguard. Sound is deep and clear the Bass sound I like.
Side unrelated note: no update on Goon? I hope this is not an indelicate inquiry?
Would have liked to see more use in the sound examples of the B string.
Hey 🦞. Sound of the upgrades is amazing, wanted the audere pre amp but they don't sell and won't ship to UK. That why I put the John East in my Jazz homage to yours.
I was thinking as you are a big stingray man, have you tried the Sandberg California Central. If so what are your thoughts A comparison video would be good. Seems a good alternative for the USA Stingray although slightly more than the Sterling Musicman. Keep up the great work. 👍
You forgot the pickguard lol . that gold pick guard sit well esthetically on that bass
I'd still add a passive tone knob, side mount output jack, black pearl pickguard, Hipshot Clover tuners and extender key, a battery box, bell brass justanut, and proper shielding I'm Abit crazy with mods tho. Also I prefer noiseless jazz pups I can't stand 60 cycle hum it drives me crazy
Same on all accounts! This was more of a parts bin special mod as the pickups, bridge and preamp were ones I had laying around lol.
@@LowEndLobster Does the fact that you couldn't be bothered to do any shielding etc. and only used parts that you had laying around , or could scrounge from aquaintances, say anything about your friendship with Rumblin' man?
@@MrJohnnyorange that's Abit unfair my dude
Nice mods! The sound is more "lively", less muted, I like it a lot - even though even before mods it sounded better than I thought it would. And losing that white pickguard was a good aesthetic decision - the black body/white pickguard/rosewood board combo is the most boring and cheapest looking in all Fenders and "fenderoids". It's much better without it!
Annnnd I have a question for you: how can I change the wiring in my Sterling SUB 5 from series to parallel? I know you did that in your Sterling Ray 24 but I have no idea how to do that. Super big thanks in advance for any advice!
A comparison between this Squire and a Fender would be interesting.
I always press like as he asks so he can play his bass for us. What would happens if i would not press like? At this point i'm to affraid to try...
Great demo as always 😉
I once decided not to press like to see what happens. Lobsters claw went away and he was able to play as usual. Funny thing is, I grew a lobster claw of my own during the video. I still have it to this day. Maybe someone will like this comment so that my hand will turn back to normal.

Hey Butch here, how about adding to your to-do lists, a review of the Fender Aerodyne Special P and J basses.
Thanks Butch! Would love to check those new Aerodynes out (and the old model as well). Adding the Boxer to the list. Not a fan of fender but MIJ fender is always cool in my book
What happened to the anodized pick guard???
I find the original setup more natural sounding.
Best modifing and test! BRAVO! Ukraine look;)))
Good tone ! Where did you buy the gold pickguard ?
I think on Amazon... I don't think it ended up fitting though hence me taking it off haha
Surprised to find I prefer the original better. Maybe I just prefer the sound of a passive bass. Everything sounds kind of compressed and hifi on the active one. It sounds great though. Just super modern and gospel chopsy.
OMG! A DONNY BENET T-SHIRT!!
Great mod! Where do you get your pick guard?
Lets gooooo
I’d love to see you de-fret a neck if you ever mod another Jazz bass
Can I send my bass to you to get active electronics
Nice improvement! The stock sound wasn't bad but the upgrades certainly made it a lot better. So why did you decide to not use the pick guard?
So the battery just fit.
In the control cavity, yes. These auderes are designed to be drop in for a passive J
I'll have to try an Audere. A Tone Monster didn't fit.
I would like to see you Mod The Gretsch Jet Jr Bass with a new bridge, maybe some TV Jones Bass pickups ((Thundertron)) and Tuners.
You mean fix Grestch's mistakes? Lol
Wow, that tone you got with the high-mids cut/low-mids centered/bass and treble boosted was incredible. Same when the bass, treble and high-mids were centered and the low-mids were boosted.
Which model of Fender pickups did you use? They sounded great.
Thank you! I'm not sure of the exact model pickups as i randomly came across them from a friend's stash
@@LowEndLobster gotcha. Well I’m sure Rumblin’ Man is gonna be pleased. Keep up the great work!
