I took my leg off in a restaurant. When I was 10 or 11 we had breakfast in this restaurant in Rifle, Colorado. I ordered a 3 stack of pancakes not realizing they were *HUGE* but they were also *REALLY* good and I ate them all.
Now keep in mind, the waitress had no idea that I had a fake leg when she asked, "What did you do, put it in your wooden leg?"
I took off my leg, looked inside and said, "Nope."
She was, I think, a little shocked.

To me, I think your personal comfort should always take precedence wherever you are. If someone questions you when you take it off in a restaurant or coffee shop, just tell them you are on a date with your leg. In a plane, tell them you get double miles if it flies alone. Seriously, just be comfortable no matter what others may think. Have a great week Jo!

I wear my above knee computerized leg from about 8a till 10pm. Occasionally, I will take if off if I’m trying to nap during the day. I do have an old leg that I can put on in a flash at night if I have to get up.
I recommend people try to use their legs as much as possible. It’s a pity when I see people have a leg and not use it.
If it doesn’t fit, there needs to be intervention from the prosthetist.
Not always easy, but worth it.

I’m a new amputee (BTK). These videos are so helpful so thank you. I’m still healing so the prosthetic fitting will be next month. I currently am using forearm crutches. Question: Can you run with a regular prosthetic or so you really need those special running U shaped feet?

Hey! I’m a below knee amputee too. I’ve been a below knee amputee for over 11 years. For people who are new to being an amputee it’s harder to run. But once you get better at walking (for me) it’s very easy to run. Above knee amputees have it harder. But other than that- yes you can run! You do not need the running foot. I don’t have a running foot and I do just fine.

Thank you for making this, Jo. I just got my first prosthetic leg (LBKA) a couple days ago and I was starting to get discouraged at my own slow progress. This helped manage my wildly unrealistic expectations. It's one thing hearing your prosthetist tell you what you should be able to manage, it's another entirely to hear it from someone who's been in your shoes..... eh, shoe.

I’ve watched 3 of your videos since having my leg amputated (BTK). I was touched by the way you reacted when you first walked with your prosthetic. I felt exactly the same way. Don’t want to on and on. However, this video also hit home for me. I recently wanted to remove my prosthetic in public, but was concerned about the reaction from others. I’m just getting used to wearing shorts in public. Thanks for your witty and thoughtful way of making this transition bearable.

Not necessarily recommended, but it works, and I am very thorough to inspect my residual limb carefully. Thanks for the videos!

I giggled so hard at the thought of you putting your leg in the overhead bin on a plane! I just traveled across the country a couple nights ago and spent a total of about 8.5 hours on planes, and as someone with a chronic pain condition that always flares up super bad in my lower extremities on flights, if I had the ability to remove my legs on a flight to ease the pain/discomfort I 100% would! You have the right (and even gift!) to make yourself more physically comfortable by taking off your leg, and shouldn't have to sit in unnecessary pain just to spare folks some "weirdness". Plus you have an endless supply of "leg room" jokes at your disposal haha. As long as you don't take off your leg and plop it in the lap of the person beside you, slightly breaking plane personal space etiquette, you're golden 😂

Thanks again for this video Jo! I myself was curious about other amputees and how long they wore their prosthetic legs, whether they took off their leg on a plane or other public places, etc. I have now become more comfortable to take my leg off in public in a mall, on a plane, etc. And I notice that mostly no one really seems to care. I think little kids stare because they're curious but I think that's fine. I wear my leg these days about 10 hours or more a day and take off the leg at least a couple times. I also take my liner off at least once to let my residual leg breathe. Thanks for these "day in the life" vids Jo...they help me get perspective on what I do day after day and if there are better ways of doing things.

I'm a pilot. Lost my leg in Vietnam. When I go to the fuel pump next to the airport restaurant. I would park my plane in a way that it was broad side to the deck. If there were kids out there. When I got out of the plane I would have my leg fall off. Then look at the deck. I would hear "mom did you" the mom would say, "shhhhhh. I make the best out of it. You have to. I wear my leg from the time I get up to when I go to bed. It's been that way for over 50 years. Just do what you can and have fun with it. semper fi

I do not have a prosthetic, but I do not think that there is anything weird or strange about taking a prosthetic of to rest your body. One thing I will say is that I am amazed to see people overcome and adapt.
One day I was in Lowes and came out to the parking lot and I saw a lady with a prosthetic leg and was so amazed that she walked normal with it and was doing everything a person with 2 meat legs would do. I am one of the people that loves to see people who overcome adversity.
I caught myself staring at her, but not because she was missing a leg, but was so amazed at how well she got around on it. When I realized I was staring at her I just wanted to tell her how amazed I was but then felt bad that I was staring and just walked off.

I am above knee amputee and I usually wear my leg around 8 hours a day maybe when I am at home, doing errands, going to the supermarket, stuff like that. I would usually take it off as soon as everything is done. I work 12 hour shifts in an office and I am out of home ca 14 hours, so usually I'd wear my leg then for ca 16-17 hours which is then fosho enough !! I've been am Amputee for 32 years already and would sometimes take 1 crutch in one hand, hop on my left leg and carry a few things in the other hand. Not to be recommended with coffee cups or full tea pots, lol. Obviously because my leg is longer with a full socket and electronic knee joint it's not as easy to remove as a bk leg. I would not that in a restaurants, but did that last year when I went to the beach and it was just too hot to sit there and enjoy the sun only. I also took off my leg on a long haul flight from Edinburgh - London - San Francisco a few years ago, well on the long part between London and SF, the same on my way back home. I sat in a 3 seat row and at the window and it took me a while to gather all my courage and warned him, that I am an Amputee and will take off my leg, lol. He said I shall do whatever makes me comfy :) 2 hour flights can be uncomfortable at some point, but I just try to cope with them.

Questions a 7 year old has: What happens if she bumps it, will she have to cut off more? How did they cut it off, with a saw? Does it hurt? What happens if she is on a ship and the ship sinks, will she drown as she can't swim with that leg? How does she put on trousers? Can she drive a car?

I am awake by 5:50 am and the second thing I do (the first is coffee☕️) is ice my leg (I am still having major socket fit issues ☹️). Then I put my prosthetic leg on......at around 7am. I take it off again a little over four hours later to ice. Then I keep it on until around 4:30pm, at which point I take it off and ice again. Then the leg is on until I get in the shower, just before bed, at around 9:45pm, and stays off until the next morning where I do it all over again. After 14 months of being an amputee and 10 months of having a prosthetic, I am not yet to the point where I can keep in on all day. I am hoping that I will get to there soon, but after already having gone through four sockets in nine months, I am less optimistic than I was six months ago.

I usually wear my leg all day but I definitely have to take at least 1 no leg day a week to let my leg recover. If I take my leg off and try to put it on I may not be able to to actually get it back on as I have huge volume fluctuations 😖 so for me when it on, it’s on for the day (approx 10-14 hours). If I’m having a high energy day I normally reduce the time to let my leg recover. Also I’m an AK so it’s kinda difficult to take my leg off discretely. Unfortunately my leg broke and my limb centre was closed during lockdown so had to switch to a wheelchair full time until I could get my leg in for repair and switch to a loaner. Only problem now I have to build up my leg on time again and stamina which is frustrating but it won’t be long until I get back to wearing it all day. When I used to wear a hard socket I could only ever manage a couple of hours before the volume fluctuations went crazy which was so annoying and unreliable. Building up the wear time its best to go slow, at your own pace and tolerance. Don’t rush it 🤗🤗

Does the pressurisation of flying affect the suction on your leg?

      Ailsa Main yes massively

    • @Travelbyailsa
      @Travelbyailsa 3 роки тому

bluedeva would it be painful? Or would it just not sit properly?

    • @bluedeva
      @bluedeva 3 роки тому +2

Ailsa Main if you take the leg off on the flight the leg will swell up and so you may not be able to put the leg back on when you land. You could keep your leg on for the whole flight but it would be uncomfortable sitting for long periods of time as the liner can be be restricting blood flow so if you do it is best to get up from your seat a couple of times and walk up and down the aisle and make sure to drink plenty of fluids to prevent blood clots. Some good things though You are allowed a free medical bag to keep all of your prosthetic bits and meds safe and separate from your carry on 😉 and you can ask for assistance to help you get to customs and the gate quicker to save you walking miles. They also sometimes allow you to be first on to the plane so you don’t have to rush getting yourself sat in your chair. hope this helps 🤗

I have a leg with the spike lock on the silicone sock about the last 6 months I got some socks for amputees there not quite as thick as the shrinker sock is I wear them most of the time or the shrinker one now I’ve been wearing them or the shrinker underneath the silicone sock it’s working out great my stump isn’t getting soaked with sweat even in hot weather I also cut one of the silicone socks off about 3 inches above my knee crawling around underneath my truck getting up with the shorter silicone sock I did pull my leg off but walking around I haven’t had any problems with it being shorter with the shrinker underneath I still have a couple long ones if needed now my stump has shrunk a bunch so most of the time I will ware a heavy sock over the silicone one and sometimes even that is a little lose so I had to cut another sock for the bottom of my stump about 6 inches high because I can’t get my leg on with 3 socks on but 2 is still lose at the bottom and 3 I can’t get my stump in over half way. But with the other sock or the shrinker underneath the silicon sock I haven’t had any skin problem with my skin ingrown hairs or any problems the silicone sock gets a little fussy but it’s always dry it’s sticky when I washed it but it doesn’t collect dirt or hair or anything it’s just dry like a big rubber band it not sticky like after you wash it but it doesn’t fall off even though it’s shorter. I take my leg off when on the bed and most of the time when I’m in my hammock but I put it on every time I get up now a lot of the time I won’t put on the silicone sock unless I’m going to walk a lot wit the shrinker and a heavy sock and sometimes I’ll stuff part of my pants leg into my prosthetics and it enough to hold it on to go to the bathroom or the kitchen for something with the shorter silicone sock and leaving the shrinker on I can stick my leg on in around 5 to 10 seconds where if I pull everything off and turn the longer silicone sock inside out roll it on then the sock on top then put on my prosthetic leg I’ve went from around ten seconds to a couple of minutes and then when taking it off. You push the button unlocking the leg then rolling down the silicone sock washing it is a pain in the sink so I mostly sprayed it down with alcohol using some coconut fiber towels with no lint wipe the sock dry turning it right side out then hanging it up to dry to hang them what I do is I have some magnets 🧲 they’re about the size of a quarter with a loop mounted on them they will hold about 90 pounds I stick the spike on the end of the sock through the hole and I have some small close pins I clip on the ridges on the spike then I just stick the magnet on anything metal like the side of the stove fridge or the metal cabinets I have now this takes 10 to 15 minutes plus washing and drying my stump every time I took off my leg but I don’t have to do all that with the shrinker or the other sock underneath the silicone sock because unless it’s really hot my stomp isn’t all sweaty when I pull off the silicone sock I don’t dump out 1/2 to 1 cup of sweat out after pulling it off of my stump and I don’t have to put down towels to mop up all the sweat because my stump is dry just like when you take off your shoes yes sometimes when it really hot and you’ve been working out hard but not every time like without the sock or the shrinker underneath so this way it’s around 5 to 10 maybe 15 seconds to put on my leg and about 20 to 30 seconds to take it off and hanging everything up with out the sock underneath this goes from 30 seconds to around 15 to 30 minutes. And your washing your stomp like your other leg whenever your taking a bath not every time you pull off your leg and I’m not having problems with skin infection because of my leg sitting in a silicone sock soaking in sweat all day or how ever long you were waring it for me that was anything over around 20 minutes. Think of your stump like your little baby it happiest when it’s clean warm and above all dry you wouldn’t want to ware a wet diaper all day and your stump doesn’t enjoy it either

Awe! Love your fur baby. I have a German Shephard myself. He my baby lol. Love him so much. I had a female before I had my kids even and she was sadly killed from the mass dog food poisoning from China, sadly we didn't even know about the recall until after she and my hubby's border collie both passed away unexpectedly within abt 2 weeks. We were heartbroken. We them adopted my male German Shepard omen and he is such a sweet boy. He will never take the place of my girl faith but he's deff in the same soft spot in my ❤.

When the gyms arent closed, I typically have it on from 430am- 830pm, I dont enjoy that, it takes a major physical toll, but I have young kids and a work 50hrs a week. My prosthetist calls me an extremist. I try to keep it off on sunday mornings to heal up. I image as I get older and heal slower, I will have to take my foot off the gas a bit.

I wear my leg a lot if I am not having any problems with it. Like when I first got my suction system I wore it for 8 hours at least. But now I am needing another one so I try not to wear it much as it hurts my Tibia. Wish I was up there to see your leg guys and get one like yours

I know what you mean. I’ve had an AK for 38 years and heck, my daily routine changes depending on how things fit that day.
Everything is a compromise, but that’s life. I know it’s quite different with a BK, the way your weight is borne by the prosthesis.
I already see by your videos how different, yet similar your challenges are. I hope your pressure points toughen up and make
daily life less inconvenient for you. Rock On, Girl💪

Joe, your videos are really inspirational for me, i am not an amputee.. but also very informational coz my father in law is an amputee now... since 10 days ago.. he still doesn't have a prosthetic leg.. but we're planning to get one.. just waiting for the stitches to come off and the leg to heal or take the final form from what i understand.. i been watching every video to get all the info i can to help him feel better and care for his leg properly .. we've never been in that situation before so alot we don't know.. could you please explain more how to care for the leg/skin daily after it heals and while/before/after wearing prosthetics? i know you mentioned some like cleaning all the time, watching for sores.. i just need all the info i might need to tell him.. coz i don't even know what to ask or search for on Google.. a reply or a video if possible about it would really help us out alot.. hope you see this comment and sorry for the long read.. stay strong and never loose that perfect adorable smile... yes it's not my personal experience but i am living it from very close view so i can feel how hard it is though you make it seem so easy and not the end of the world and that's what people like me and my family needed to realise .. I can't thank you enough for doing what you do ❤️

What sort of differences are there in wearing a prosthetic for amputees and for people who were born without a fully formed limb? I'm thinking of the Australian comedian Adam Hills, who was born without a foot and wears a prosthetic.

  • @KiKianaKi

I’d be really worried about your prosthetic on a plane. My legs swell like crazy on planes so I would assume yours would too and with the pressure changes I would be worried about that hurting your leg. Will your body adjust to wearing a prosthetic with time? Such as being sore after a hike, will your body get used to it and stop being so sore after activity or will it always be difficult?
