Fourteen years of pain and failed ankle surgeries brought me to 2018, when I made the difficult decision to become a twenty-seven-year-old below-the-knee elective amputee. This channel is to document my journey of amputation surgery, recovery, and reclaiming my life.

It's so strange watching this as a Prosthetist from the UK. All our patients get free limbs, but are limited to 2, which we repair and replace parts as necessary FOR FREE.
Also, you can get an easy swap adapter which means you don't have to fiddle with unscrewing adapters to change feet (if you have enough space for it)
i dont know why it is called insurance anyhow.... i mean one prothesis all three years, not the food part included and for swimming even not in insurance...
1. My snowboarding foot was $52,000
2. You still can go snowboarding with your other foot, its just harder to properly hit your toeside in a standard foot without the compression of a snowboarding foot. But if you want to go at all this season, Id be down to go with you!
3. IMO, amputees dont need any swimming legs. They just weigh you down and you have to constantly worry about it coming off.

Jo, interesting topic for a future video: how did you choose the "attachment" system you use to keep your leg on?
I would like to see that too. I have noticed that Jo's outter sleeve (not sure what it is actually called) is much taller than some of the other ones I have seen. Or perhaps she is far more petite than I'm realizing haha
@@LeilaDancer I am thinking that Jo, and maybe she will answer this, is not a short woman, I am thinking she may be like 5-7 or so. She is the only person I have seen using an outer sleeve like that, that is even covering her socket.
In Greece we can have one prosthetic every 5 years. About the heel there is a new prosthetic part that you can press a button and you can adjust it up to 8 cm. 😊😊 It is going to be, my new feet!
The attachment system, kind of choose you. I mean it depends of your overall health, body weight and of course your limb. For example, I am overweight and I can only use an air suction system.
I 100% agree as I’m an amputee below knee also. Canada is the exact same for the 3year rule. As a result I’ve always had to get a leg that I can work with installing flooring for a living which is crazy stiff for regular walking but allows me to move and lift crazy weight. So currently I’m due now for a new one and my work leg has held up. Looking for a comfortable foot that allows me to walk far distances without pain and enjoy life with my beautiful fiancé. We love snorkeling too so I definitely understand the frustration but still do it. It’s crazy the money these prosthetic company’s make off active positive people trying to live a normal life. Your video was spot on and glad to see you pushing forward :)
That's really interesting to hear about the blades. I know of someone (don't actually know them) but a girl in the UK had two above-knee amputations and she had blades as her 'everyday legs' for years. It's crazy that because she had both it didn't have the same effect with her hips which in a way give her more active ability than a one leg amputee. It is crazy to many that having two missing limbs has the potential to give you more activeness than having one leg amputated.
She also lost the ability to have decent mobility without prosthetics on, so it's certainly a double edged sword
I've been an above the knee amputee for 17 years and always only had a one leg at the time. In Poland, where I used to live, even walking leg is only covered in a small percent, so my family had to spend a lot of money every few years only for me to be able to walk. Having more than one leg is not something that even crossed my mind at the time, mainly due to the cost. One of the reasons I moved to a different country is that it would be impossible to get the money for a new leg every time I needed it (needing a prosthetic knee makes it even more expensive). Luckily in my new country one leg is covered, so at least I can save a little bit every month for a running leg, as it's been my dream for years. Hopefully next year! :)

Is the insurance policy different for little kids since they grow really fast?
I don’t have personal experience just anecdotal from brother/friends - they have a socket at the bottom that pops in at the bottom that mitigates a lot of issues with growth (the sleeve provides the vacuum, and then you can pad it a bunch)... Most insurance companies are better with kids stuff as well.
There’s also some cool stuff like using BOA laces for casts for smaller children that our doctor at the time said are being used for helping fit - I’m not sure how that works with vacuum fit/etc though, haven’t seen one myself.
This is from my experience they normally paid for 1 a year and when you are an adult they pay for 1 in 3years
"need" and "can" are very weird verbs when your disabled. There are so many thing we *can* technically do, but also reasonably we can't. Or things we don't technically *need* but also reasonably we do.
When you have a ton of them I want to build you a Tim Taylor (from Home Improvement) style motorized closet for all your legs to be perfectly displayed and organized and accessed at the push of a button. 😂 That goofy episode of that show inspired me for life.

That three year policy pretty much sounds (pun intended) like the general practice with hearing aids. Pick one that seem to fit you know and use it for at least four years unless it brekas down due to manufacture faults. :p
YOU ARE NOT TOO OLD TO BE A GYMNAST, my friend! gymnastics is not about becoming as good as Simone, it's mainly about enjoying it, moving, learning new things and becoming the best gymnast YOU can be. I've loved gymnastics for years and sadly wasn't able to go to a club because it's hella expensive here in Switzerland and it was really far away from where I live. Then I got a tumor (her name is Felicia, she says hi) in my right thigh, posterior and lateral sides. I never believed I'd ever be able to get down into a split, flip or twist so I gave up. in January I decided to stretch every day to get my left leg split (right one is a big no). I didn't care how long it would take me or if I couldn't go all the way down. It was a bit of a dumb decision because of chronic pain and the fact it would cause more pain in my right leg, but frankly I became so tired that I was not able to ride horses or do any sport in general because of Felicia that I decided to push for one and only one thing. Granted, at 22 I'm just a little bit younger than you are, but I 100% believe that you can start gymnastics (when you get a prosthetic that is suited for that) at any age. I fully believe in you!!
Also, if you ever go snowboarding, would you share a little bit? I miss it so so much, especially because I live in a country that is 70% mountains, which means I have easy access to them.

Hi Jo. Hope you're doing well and as always, thanks for your posts. I know what you mean about the frustration with health insurance rules. When I worked as an occupational therapist assistant in a nursing home, part of my job was self care which included showering with most patients that were going home. For safety, most patients required a shower seat/bench and the insurance companies wouldn't cover them! They were considered a luxury item! Can you imagine only a sponge bath everyday?! It always upset me because these people were on fixed incomes and they deserved a shower just as much as the next guy! Hopefully things will change some day. Love and hugs to you and family!
I really love that you have this platform I worked on cars for a long time I worked on 18 wheelers worked my way up to 18 wheeler wrecks. I have been an amputee for 2 years now and I just want to say thank you because it's hard to know if your gonna survive let alone help from people or anything else from surgery to recovery.
I'm a wheelchair user, and I can empathize with needing expensive equipment to do specific activities, and the only realistic way to get some of it is through grants (if you even qualify).
With wheelchair sports, you could use an everyday chair for some recreational activities, like basketball or tennis, but your performance will not be great. You could use a court chair for multiple sports, but you'd still need a different chair for track, skiing, sled hockey, etc. Many of these chairs cost around $5,000 (this is a rough generalization), which is considerably cheaper than prosthetics, but still out of reach for most athletes. If you want to try out a wheelchair sport, you often have to borrow someone else's chair even though it does not fit correctly. At least it's still usable, unlike trying on someone else's prosthetic socket. It's still an awful situation for both wheelchair users and prosthetic wearers. There are so many sports I'd love to try, but there's so few teams that have recreational programs and provide equipment for adults who are not military veterans. I hope that para sports will continue to grow in popularity in the future.

But I will need a pretty healthy leg for every day and landscaping. I am gonna figure this out with my future prosthesis. I would like to get back to the gym again. I like riding a bike as well. I'm a BKA same as you & I love your inspirational & joyful videos. I live in Australia & here we have a service for people with pretty much any disability called NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme). I've been allocated $78,000 this year. Unlike in the States where your employer pays for your health insurance or you pay for it yourself, everything is covered. I'm not 100% how many legs I can get as I'm a fairly new amputee, but I think I would really be struggling to get 3 legs provided from Government funding. I will look into it. And talking about bikes, the NDIS has given me $7,000 to buy an Electric Mountain Bike which I should receive soon. They also fund all my Peer Support, Psych appointments, golf lessons, a $10,000 electric bed, medical supplies - & the list goes on. I'm very fortunate to live in such a great Country. Oh & by the way, you're a very beautiful woman 😉

Y'know, your theory about how many legs an amputee needs(and yes, I think NEEDS is appropriate), could apply to someone in a wheelchair🤔. Like, I got measured and all that jazz in February for a wheelchair, and the physical therapist asked me what type of chair I wanted.. was I looking at a power chair or scooter because of my screwed up shoulders? Nope, I still want power, you I want to be able to use my arms, so I asked for a Power Assist chair. The work kinda like an electric lawn mower... you push a little and it goes, push a lot and it takes off. And if I am having a really bad day, I can leave the battery off and have a friend(🤣🤣🤣) or family( again 🤣🤣🤣) just push me in the chair.
There are wheelchairs for power athletes, basketball players, dancers...but I don't know how insurance works with any of these since I STILL haven't heard back from insurance on my chair.
My cousin lost her leg at 15 and also has 3 prosthetics. It's interesting that few people on two good legs really consider the mechanics of movement and balance. However anybody using a prosthetic leg considers movement and balance. If anyone is wondering about a 3 year rule, it's about wear and tear.
I really wish that something that has been around for so long could be cheaper for any Amputee then what it is now its insane how much some of this equipment costs I have CP and luckily Ive been blessed with a full range of movement but I know at least three people who are not so lucky and have to have electric wheelchairs if they have a accident and the chair is ruined Or damaged and needs repairs they are SOL because insurance companies really don't take into account life !
You know your channel taught me a lot about being an amputee. I always thought that it was rather simple. And then I saw you - a person with a relatively little body amputated and it's all so complicated. I don't mean to insult you I'm just stating the facts. Those skin issues and prosthesis issues... That's just overwhleming. O.O
About my country - I don't know how much they cover but it's for sure not something insta and you have to wait. I think they cover basic prosthesis. I can be wrong though.

I've seen a lot of amputees ski on just one ski with outriggers (the poles with little skis on the ends) instead of poles. I've volunteered with the National Sports Center for the Disabled in Winter Park and they do adaptive ski and snowboard lessons that are pretty affordable and include the use of all the equipment. Winter Park is currently on track to open this year assuming the Arapahoe forest fire is under control! You could totally learn to ski without another leg!
Yo, Jo! Attach your socket to your bike's pedal with a cheap metal tube and a connection that allows lateral swing (hole through tube, pin through brackets on pedal), eliminating all that heavy, cumbersome, and expensive stuff in between. Plus, it makes your bike harder to steal!
Veteran here and I will say that the VA has been great to me. I didn’t have my first leg (pin lock) for three years but generally that seems to be their rule. I am now on my third leg (suction suspension) with my second leg as my spare and my first no longer functional. I have traveled to 63 other countries at last count (mostly in the military or contracting) and I can assure you that most American amputees are substantially better treated, equipped and supplied than are amputees in most other countries. The “boo hoo” I should have multiple legs that other people need to pay for is not cool. Be grateful that you aren’t spanging on a modified skateboard like some amputees are in other countries. I don’t want to be critical (I am a subscriber who appreciates you, your channel and your content). I would simply request that all of us keep in mind that nothing is free even if we are not the ones paying money for it. It might not be very easy to do things with just one leg that is general purpose but you can be reasonably active (as you often demonstrate). Perhaps one of the keys to adjusting to amputation and a prosthesis is honing your ability and expanding your capacity to adapt. Our lives (even those of non-amputees) are very often full of challenges. I find it important to keep in mind that within every challenge is opportunity. One of the things I admire and respect about you is your positive attitude, maybe I am reading you wrong but, the apparent sense of entitlement doesn’t look good on you. I just feel that you are significantly better than that. If I am mistaken or over reacting…I apologize. In any event I appreciate you and your content. It has been helpful to myself and (I am certain) others as well.

It is okay to want to do more. You are young and need to do more. It is not good just to sit around. I agree, insurance companies run the quality of peoples lives. I got some gripes about that.

I agree the insurance should do better, but in all actuality, look at your leg ...look at the parts, I can get a complete carbon fiber hood for a car for 4-800 bucks...why is 2 feet 5 and 8000$ ...why is a silicone liner 800+? ...why is the socks for the socket 20 bucks each? ...it's all over priced almost as bad as insulin and epi pens
I was just wondering, have you been able to go rock climbing since your video on it? I imagine the pandemic would make that difficult of course. Would you consider getting a specialized leg for that?
When it's been three years and you're eligible for a new leg, are you going to replace your current main leg or get another type of leg? How long do legs last?
Jo, if you have another socket it might be possible to make some kind of attachment to fit a blade from a free diving fin to it. You might have to shorten it a bit or else you'd be swimming in left hand circles. 😉
Greetings Jo; As usual you've given me something to think about and discuss with my prosthetist. I wonder if you have ever read Robert Heinlein's "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress"? One of the main characters has a prosthetic arm and works as a computer technician. So most of his "hands" are tools. When he goes to work he has a bag of arms/hands for various repairs. When he's at home he has a hand that looks like his meat hand. I thought you might like it; with today's topic and all. Its' also an award winning novel and one of Heinlein's best.

I live in Greece, and swimming is very important thing here. But insurance doesn't cover the expenses of a pair of swimming prosthetic legs and i don't have the money to buy them. So next year were I am going to buy a pair of new prosthetics I am going to convert my previous set to water feet! 😊😊

Jo, you are so lucky to have friends give you the extra legs, being a bilateral BKA I would have to have two of everything, something I could never afford, especially having to live on Social security. Anyway at my age (71) my days of skiing or snowboarding are over. You are so fortunate to live in Colorado and are young enough to be able to participate in all your sport activities. So you keep at it kiddo and enjoy your life with hubby and the pups. I’m envious.

I think you need an astronaut leg, a scuba diver leg, a race car driver leg.... Seriously, it would be nice to have one that was more adaptable to a variety of activities. Perhaps that will happen on day. :)
My cousin has a mathematic equation for number of bikes you should have I feel it would work well in this case

I wonder how it works for kids. They need new legs a lot more often than adults right? They gotta have different rules about how often they are covered.
I dont like in America, truthfully Im almost surprised they even cover one leg every couple years. The American doesnt really have a great reputation.
Does your amputation mean you cant change insurances cause your premiums or copays would be crazy high due to having a preexisting condition?
I am very glad to live in a place with public mandatory insurance. Ive never had to worry about costs and even stuff that isnt covered, or only sometimes covered is still affordable. Its not a perfect system, but its still way above the American one. It takes a long time to see specialists if it isnt a very serious emergency, but lets be honest, that seems to be the case even in the US and most other countries.
Premiums are based on your income, not your age or health. Sometimes you have to pay for meds etc yourself, but I have never had any that cost more than 10bucks. Glasses arent covered, or only rarely covered. That kinda sucks, but glasses are still somewhat affordable. The cheapest are maybe 100€? And they can last you a long time if your eyes dont deteriorate. Nothing compared to paying 50grand for a prosthetic. Braces are only sometimes covered, mine actually were, but you can get extra insurance for idk 3 bucks a month for your kids and then braces are covered too. International insurance is also great. Less than 1€ a day if outside the EU, 0 for inside the EU. (A lot more if you want to go to the US, cause medicine is way too expensive there)
Well, healthcare isnt free. Always annoying when people say that. Germany doesnt have free health insurance. But we do have mandatory public insurance. And premiums are based on income, so its pretty affordable.
You can get private insurance, and then doctors will see you pretty much immediately. Private insurance is a bit annoying cause it creates a two class system. With private insurance you have to prepay everything out of pocket though, or get it preapproved. Its a bit more work and premiums are based on your age/health, so while it may be cheaper in the beginning, it can be more expensive if youre older. Its very difficult to switch back to public insurance after a while. Also you gotta pay a bit to insure your kids seperately, rather than just have them included for free.
That said, the level of care you will get with private insurance is a lot better. And that sucks. Its like pensions for government employees. Theyre double what regular people get in retirement pay even if they had the same wages throughout their career. And if you get a pension you dont even have to pay into the retirement fond, so you get to keep even more of your wages, and you get double the money once you retire.
Two class systems annoy me.
You can only get private health insurance if you make more than 67ish thousand a year, are self employed, or are a government employee of the type that is working towards a pension. Apparently university students can also get it under some very specific circumstances. Idk.
So yeah, German system isnt perfect, but even the public insurance is way superior to everything Ive seen about American insurances.

And so it is with amputees!!! I am coming up on 20 years as a left below the knee amputee and 13.5 years as a double below the knee amputee. Insurance is the culprit to why many amputees are inactive. Hence they have a higher probability of developing other medical issues related to inactivity. Insurance is happy to pay for my cardiac rehab should I develop cardiac disease, but bucks like a wild stallion when my prosthetist puts in a request to build my running legs!!!! You should also mention in the "so how much does this cost" concept the cost of liners, I need new liners about every 4 months, for me that is at least 4, two on, two cleaning. Since I am a runner I need 8 - 4 for my walking leg and 4 for the running leg. On average liners pop for about $1700 per liner, thank goodness my insurance pays for most of the tab. Then there is the cost of prosthetic socks, nope not the type you put on your foot the type we use to adjust for volume loss or gain on the amputated side. Socks run around $150 per pack of 3, really???? 3 how does that meet the concept of 2 per leg when you are a double amputee??? Would I stopping who I am as an amputee???? Heck no!!!!! PS: if you think only young people are bouncing about on running blades, think again....I am 73!!!! Oh running blades do to have springs in the foot or socket, the spring is what the amputee can muster as they run. The carbon fiber the blade is made of does have give otherwise they would crack when amputee runs. THERE IS NO ADVANTAGE OF RUNNING ON BLADES. I know Jo knows that fact others may not!
Doesn't matter which country you live in. Insurance companies are such utter atrocious Scrooges......
But having said that -: Who would ever think that Artificial Feet would suffer from cracked heels ( Is there protecting oils that can take care of that? Like non slip Furniture Polish)......☮️⚛️🌏

Some thoughts:
Swimming / snorkeling: have you tried a “mermaid fin” ? Not sure how well it would stay on (you may have to go for 80’s yuppie braces ~ 😱) ~ don’t know if they exist in a “full body” as opposed to the more normal waist down ?
Cycling : why do you need a shoe ? Just have a stump with the spd pedal directly on the bottom (may need an improved ball and socket on the bottom). Could the same idea also work for the ski and snow board ?
Love those running blades - something I would love to try one - they are just _so cool_ ~ actually would you not just get a “pair” so run with blades on both feet ?

I too lost my leg like you but under completely different circumstances. I was 72 when this happened and am now almost 73. The doctors can not believe how good my attitude is. (Like yours is) Like you I was an avid diver and swimmer. My dives from a board or from the side of the pool... I would have about a 3 inch splash. LOL I would actually draw a crowd to watch me doing the inward and only inches from the board. Needless to say this is my only downside so far....in making people happy and teaching them. Of course I do not know when I will be able to do other constructive things but I am keeping the positive attitude. So I find others things to do in life to stay p[positive. I know I will never in my lifetime be able to complete all that needs to be done however, no one every really does so I will continue on. Stay positive be of good spirit and work the clock to your advantage, I do. Good video and thanks for sharing.

Mermaid swimming is kind of hitting the news lately (at least from my prospective of Molly Burke and Enchanted Rose Costume making videos on it).
Could that be a more accessible swimming option? I guess mainly for those with only one amputated leg rather than double amputees. Just throwing that out into the universe.

I feel like you should get three legs right off the bat. One for walking and two for whatever activities you want. Whether that's a sport, different type of shoe, etc. You'd think insurance companies would want to keep you active because active people are generally healthier and healthier people are cheaper.
Are you more flexible in your amputated leg now, compared to before your amputation (in your hip)?
I think they should offer you more legs so you can do everything you want/need to do to stay healthy. You shouldn’t be limited by fact you are an amputee.

Hey Jo! Have you considered using a little "Shoe Goo" to repair the worn areas of your prosthetic foot?
Compared to how many amputees there are out there compared able body people insurance should be able to spread the cost out. I really feel insurance in America is done poorly.
I always try to be here with just that even not watching your video we are always here in this wonderful heaven we call earth and the milky way Galaxy.

The insurance coverage for wheelchairs is similar. Insurance will only cover a wheelchair once every five years. I know people who went through the whole process and got insurance to cover an off-the-shelf, standard wheelchair and then realized that what they really needed was something custom. I'm two years in with my custom power wheelchair and while I LOVE it, I've already had to get major repairs on it and I definitely feel like next time I might choose something a little different. That's not even taking into account the fact that I would really like a more portable chair to travel with, since my chair is several hundred pounds and cost $26,000, and airlines have a nasty habit of damaging wheelchairs. So either I save up out of pocket for a travel chair or I have insurance cover a travel chair three years from now and hope my current chair can last another five years after that. It's a really messed up system.
