    MY AMPUTATION STORY:
    • HOW I BECAME AN AMPUTE...
Fourteen years of pain and failed ankle surgeries brought me to 2018, when I made the difficult decision to become a twenty-seven-year-old below-the-knee elective amputee. This channel is to document my journey of amputation surgery, recovery, and reclaiming my life.

Your goodbye to my foot ceremony was my first introduction to you & your journey. I totally bawled, without knowing anything about you, but having chronic pain myself it was so easy for me to empathize. My pain is neurological from a spinal cord condition (Syringomyelia) but you definitely given me so much to think about.
If I could be anywhere near as strong as your are, could I do what you've done?
I'd love to see your pictures if you do find them and decide to share them.

Kind of off topic but I think syringomyelia is related to my own disability (spina bifida)

I had the option to have my foot amputated or for them to try and save my foot. They saved my foot but now it's causing me a lot of pain so I may have to go through this type of surgery also... Hoping for the best though

I was unsurprised but super disappointed to learn that I was not allowed to bring Festus McGee the benign brain tumor home because he was biopsied for malignancy and then destroyed. I genuinely still wish I had a tumor in a jar of preservative on my living room table. P.S. I would love to see any "super gross" pics you feel like showing. Clearly I don't get grossed out easily...

    • @drewharris7785
      @drewharris7785 5 років тому +5

Thanks! I had to make it less terrifying; like I knew I would be okay because it was benign and I had confidence that my surgeon would fix it, but the word tumor is still scary as hell, so I made it cute. Plus I loved the novelty of being able to keep something like that; I've had lots of surgeries for other things but I've never had a souvenir removed from my body

I saw a documentary about a Dutch guy who made his amputated leg into a lamp. It was in formaldehyde in a container. He sat in an armchair next to it. You can easily find photos on the Internet. Some people decide to keep limbs frozen and they want them to be put in their coffins when they die. But in most cases those limbs are examined and cremated, just like other body parts or organs after operations. It would be interested to see that folder full of photos, though 😀

So happy to find your channel! I had a left below knee amp 3 yrs ago...I wanted to cover mine in illustrations, but the nurse discouraged me from doing so.
But I often think about where mine went, assumed it just went to a batch crematorium?
Yea, now I want to see my records, I did ask my heart surgeon after my bypass fir a photo of my open chest, which he happily provided me with, cool...I understand that many hospitals video surgeries, wouldn't THAT be something.
Oh, and get this....I was fully awake for my amp!! Seriously, they gave me a spinal, I was awake, was able to bring my cel phone in, to listen to my own choice in music (surgeon liked rock, I wanted mellow music) even took a phone call from a concerned friend!
I was on enough stuff that I just giggled at the sound of the bone saw! Take care, and be fabulous!

Your Hospital tour idea would be amazing. I would have to think that to some degree, given your platform, a hospital may be willing to show you in a documentary format. Given how many people going through similar experiences watch your videos, I'm sure that it could alleviate some form of fears. Best Wishes!

I'm actually seriously considering trying to network and get access to do so! I have a number of contacts in the hospital, and I'm wondering if I couldn't do that. It would be positive PR for them, and I've not seen any other videos out there like that! I'd love to show people the actual process post-surgery, where limbs go, what happens, interview the people who handle them, etc..!

I actually work in a hospital medical records department. One small part of my job is preparing the paper record to be scanned into the electronic record system. Part of that process is separating any photographs(usually of injuries before treatment, amputated limbs, and surgical excisions... having been employed there for over 20 years, I’ve probably seen thousands of them), x-rays, and CDs from the record. Since most hospitals don’t have enough money to buy scanners with high enough resolution for photos and x-rays, those are then labeled with the patient’s information, filed by date, and then boxed and kept in storage for the amount of time required by law(10 years in the state where I live, though we usually keep them for at least 15). We almost never get requests for copies of photos, but it does occasionally happen.

You have such a great outlook in life...I commend you! I hope now you can get on with your life and be free of pain!
BTW, your vid said your foot” received in a biohazard bag without fixative labeled ....bla, bla, bla..” that line means, the foot was received in a biohazard bag, without any type of fixative ( a fixative is like Formalin, a preservative), so the foot had no type of preservation in the bag with it, and the next line means the bag had a label on it . I hope this clears it up.
    I have confused myself. LOL

Thank you for the picture warning. I'm one of those people who gross out easily. I had some surgery on my left foot. My surgeon was excited because he had just bought a digital camera. He was so proud of himself that she shared all the pictures of my foot he took during the surgery with my wife! I passed out when they took the caste off! Hate an ampoule of ammonia being broken under my nose. I made up profanities as I cussed the surgeon out.Thank you so much for sharing your journey. I couldn't be as strong as you! One suggestion. Do what I did when I checked in for the surgery. The women made the mistake of asking me how I was doing. I decided it was time to be honest. I said that in less than an hour they were going to knock me out, dissect my foot, take out some bone. Add some screws, and and put me in a caste for 6 weeks. I looked at her and said how the hell do you think I'm doing. She laughed and said that she agreed with me. Some idiot in the Hospital thought it was a good idea so she was required to either great people! Please tell the rats hello. You are a role model for me and others!

Wow that's so cool. I would not want to see. I think if you get the photos, you'll make the decision then. I still haven't looked at the photos my mom took of my surgical scar as it healed. We may have lost those photos to time. I think they took photos for record of receiving the limb, and maybe it will be used in medical education. More than likely, those photos will sit in a secured computer hard drive as proof that they received and burned the limb. I did a job in an anesthesia billing office, and there are records of EVERYTHING, just in case it's needed. I'll take an educated guess that's why there are photos of the foot. I hope this helps!

Totally fascinating, I personally would want to know what happened to any 'parts' of mine that were removed, but I also know that anything removed from a living body no longer looks like it once did. Dead tissue looks dead. ( Former EMT) Imagination can sometimes fill in the blanks for some people, but dead bodies (and body parts) do not usually look like like bodies anymore. At all. Funeral directors etc. can and do effect extremely wonderful work but in the end, dead I'd dead and without circulation, I think seeing any amputated body part of my own would not seem real to me. To each their own of course, but...

I gotta admit, I might take a peek. But I also worry it could make me sad. Not to ruin the light-hearted mood, but if you're seriously thinking of viewing it, (even just in private), keep in mind that it could be traumatizing. Sometimes it's better to just leave things alone, you know? Just like you didn't know how you'd feel about the foot tour until after the fact, you don't know how you'll react to the photos unless or until you do it. Anyway, just something to consider. Hope you're feeling well today 🌸

I think seeing the photographs would be interesting. I’m not easily disturbed though so I don’t know what other people would think 🤔

If you decide to share, adding a link to the "private" video of it in the description of one of your other vids might be a good way to go. People would have to make an active decision to view it... nobody taken off guard.

I definitely want to see your gross foot photos! And what do they mean by “gross” in this context, I wonder? And what are the photos used for? Maybe, if you do get access to your foot photos and you choose to share, you can link them somewhere so that if people watching your videos don’t want to accidentally come across it, they won’t have to. And those of us who want to take the conscious action of seeing the photos would have to click on the link. That is, if you find the phots and choose to share them. Such an interesting thing to discover though!!!

I saw someone suggest having an artist make a recreation of your foot and I'd totally be up for painting it for you if you want! haha I'm a prosthetic limb designer so I've seen my share of amputation photos.
Also, I just wanna know if the doctor felt inclined to cut off your foot at the dashed line you so kindly drew for him lmao

Wow that’s crazy yanno I think a good way of going about sharing the pictures if you get them is to upload a private video and send the link through email or something for those that want to see it

I work in radiology, and have seen many "gross" things, but I wouldn't want to see that, personally. UA-cam would probably say something as well. They are getting a bit more strict on their policies.

I agree - I don't think it is UA-cam appropriate. I don't think I will, if I could get them. If I did, I think I would let people know where they could be found on a separate site IF they wanted to see them. That shouldn't be something anyone should see if they don't want to you know?
