  • By 1968, at 47 years old, Suharto emerged as Indonesia's number one man. For the next three decades, Suharto and his family allegedly amassed the largest ill-gotten fortune in all of Asia.
Most of which would likely never be recovered, constituting a $35 billion theft that continues to haunt Indonesians till this day.

Indonesians and Filipinos suffered the same fate in history. Both were ruled by ruthless dictators who plundered billions from their countries coffers. Sadly, for us Filipinos, most of us have forgotten the lessons of the dictatorship. Coupled with relentless propaganda and disinformation, young Filipinos now view the Marcos rule as a golden period.
I really hope that Indonesians do not make the same mistake that my country just did this week. As the late George Santayana once said. "Those who have not learned lessons from the past are condemned to repeat it".

The difference between Ferdinand marcos and Surharto
Ferdinand marcos Sr he rather step down then going to war with the flipino people and go back to his home city but the US kidnapped him to Hawaii
Ferdinand marcos Sr told his armys to not shoot civilians and drop their weapons even tho they are trying to bomb and get inside the malacanang
Ferdinand marcos Sr build alot of bridges infrastructures houses for poor people
Economy under martial law was the golden era of the Philippines economy to 1971 - 1978
1986 he didn't want to give his position to Cory aquino coz she is a house wife that knows nothing about government and economy policy
He build a nuclear power plant so the flipinos people can have free electricity but was stop when Cory aquino took the position he told Cory to continue it but she said she doesn't want the flipino people to remember his name
He had a plan about the flooding problem in Philippines that the flipinos are facing his flood control project were successful the last one didn't it was stopped when Cory aquino took the power
Most of his projects that could have helped the Philippines economy were sold by the aquino and ramos administration like the steel corp and other government assets
The people who live during his era said the life was much more better and easier
I've never seen a dictator that made alot of things to his country i still believe he stole money but people who live during his presidency said he is the best president the philippines ever had
His son bongbong marcos won the election in 2022 with over 31 Milion votes yet when he ran people said he will declared martial he will stole money he will kill every one that would say bad to his name he would change the airport name to marcos international Airport he will change the san juanico bridge to marcos bridge that his father built but the name was change when he was kicked out of the position they say the Philippines would be the next sri Lanka if he win there will be no investors will invest
      but he prove them wrong
his state visit in Indonesia and Singapore President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. secured $14.36 billion (804B) in pesos in investment pledges following his inaugural state visits to Indonesia and Singapore, which will support the administration’s economic recovery and job generation initiatives and his state visit in US is successful It is targeting to boost its revenues by as much as 10 percent thisyear and create over 1.1M Marcos Sept 18-24 working visit to the US bore fruit after securing USD3.9 billion in investment pledges which are expected to generate around 112,285 jobs
President Bongbong marcos is the son of the late dictator ferdinand marcos sr he won with over 31 Milion in May 9 2022

Indonesians and Filipinos are truly alike, even in fate, both countries suffered from dictators who siphoned billions from the public coffers to enrich their families. Sadly, Filipinos seemed to have never learned from their history and have favored the late dictator's son in the recent presidential election.
I hope Indonesians learn from their history and do not make the same mistake that the Filipinos had just done. God speed to us all.

Many years back I was travelling in an Asia and got to know a group people in a pub. After several rounds of pool they invited me to join them for clubbing. Their luxury cars were parked on the sidewalks. Upon arriving at the best club in town, with a long queue, we went straight to the front and space was made immediately for us to get in. We got a lounge and expensive bottles were brought nonstop. Whenever my glass was empty or I put a cigarette in my mouth, there was immediately a servant to refill or light. Even on the dance floor they would follow and serve whenever "needed". It was the craziest night out. At the end of the night we shared contacts and they asked me to join them on a trip to Borneo. I later found out that they were members of the Suharto family. Till this day it feels strange to have been so close to this family.

My mom still remembers the fact that some of her neighbors just mysteriously disappeared (most probably killed) when Suharto was getting rid of all the suspected Communists (apparently people were just killed even if they're not confirmed Communists). I think Indonesians' attitude towards Suharto definitely differs depending on who you ask. My parents are Chinese Indonesians who lived half of their lives under his regime, and they felt very systemically discriminated. Also he stole our country's wealth, ruled the country under a dictatorship, and his family never faced real consequences. I'm still angry about that, and I'm still happy that we got rid of him in 1998. Even though now Indonesia is more vulnerable to having religious extremists take over the government, we can't go back to a corrupt dictatorship again no matter what. It's just sad that a lot of Indonesians are still so ignorant. In a way, you can't have a working democracy with an ignorant population.

I knew an Indonesian truck driver who was alive during the communist wipeout.
He told me the poor, uneducated villagers were promised land that they could farm on (they were sold the communist dream), so they willingly signed up to the communist party, not understanding the full implications of that.
When the military crackdown happened, he was forced by soldiers to drive his truck to pickup the villagers and take them to a spot in the mountains, where the soldiers gunned the villagers down - straight into a mass grave.
This likely happened all over the country, but this was just one anecdotal story I personally knew from someone who was there.

Never knew Indonesia's dictator managed to run off with such an insane wealth - it's definitely good for this to become public.
The only issue I have with this video is the claim at 1:56 where the text claims Indonesia reached $4114 GDP per capita in 1997, when in reality it was only around a thousand dollars back then and it has only reached $4k about a year or two ago. When I saw this, it unfortunately made me wonder about the authenticity of the numbers thrown around in rest of the video.

And yet many indonesian people, especially the older generation, still fondly remember suharto. his regime is generally perceived as the safest, and the most stable period in indonesian history. It's the period where thieves, robbers, and criminals are quickly killed on spot by petrus (silent assassins), religion extremism is clamped down harshly, and any kind of social discontent is put to stop before it even happens. It's a police state at its finest. Then again, most indonesians were still very poor and much prefer living in safety over political freedom

    • @meinelust
      @meinelust 2 роки тому

True, the good thing about that period was the relative safety compared to now. Especially that religion extremism is clamped down harshly. FPI, HTI, and any other treasonous "religious" organizations were quickly dealt with before they grew bold.

Life was also much more simple before and during Suharto. All many people cared about was rice and kerosene. For decades, elections were pro forma; someone from the military would come to a village and "instruct" illiterate peasants how to vote (i.e., to put mark next to Suharto/Golkar).

it's a police state at its worst. it was only financially stabile up to a point until the bubble burst, because its initial prosperity was built on top of theft. it's a period where contrarians, dissenters and the working class were murdered like flies. pure theatre of barbarism.
