- This was my first trip into the incredibly diverse rock sounds this beloved band has offered over their discography and geez I had no idea what was happening a lot of the time. What a ride, truly tasteful dynamics constantly keeping you on your toes. I didn't know which album to start with so I just picked Lateralus, this monster album feels like you are consistently being thrown from one time signature to another. Im so glad I finally took the time to sit with this band.

Hey Everyone, hope you enjoy the vid! what an album, Tried my best to make the cuts as smooth as possible without taking too much away from the flow of each song. I imagine there are many incredible moments that have been missed on this first reaction, very keen to keep diving into this bands work over time!
You should consider falling back to 1996 on their 2nd album AEnima, and maybe hop forward to their 4th album 10,000 Days from 2006. You can really hear the evolution and growth of the band.
The TOOL fans will watch every second of your future reactions should you decide to forgo the cuts. Just saying :) Great job
@@IKnowVlasic YEP ! Can't do the edits..!
Tool fans will watch every second. Skip the edits for the future albums.
Go back to the start and move through their discography
Not a loop. Seen it performed live. Maynard is one of the most ICONIC vocalist ever!!! ✌
@@davidward9737 lol the man is 60 years old and is in 3 bands at the same time. Let him rest a bit.
@@raulsanches9283 no danny is 60 as a drummer. Maynard is very weak and obvious on this album (Edit he fiing sux. To much A PC. And that shame of the band. He never delivers on this album. MJK is stuck it is APC meeting Tool
@@davidward9737 people grow. And bands do, too. Obviously MJK isn't as invested in the band as he was in the 90s. Also the music doesn't really allow for huge vocal performances. Fear Inoculum mosty showcases Dannys performance. But that's just how it is. Things change wether you like it or not. You just have to accept it how it is.
@@raulsanches9283 I love Danny. But it show cases Adams arrangement. MJK is freaking weak on this Album. It is not Tool and you know what I'm getting at. Justin, Danny and Adam gave their all. Maynard sang APC things.... It wasn't Tool. He talks about being a instrument. He really suck pushit on this Album
@@davidward9737 it is Tool. Just not the Tool you'd like them to be. Bands evolve. Undertow is much different to Aenima and 10000 Days is much different to FI. But I'm sure you know that. It's just you don't want to accept it. I agree MJK is weakest on the album, however it's part of the natural lifecycle of a band. While they were angry in the beginning, their music now is much more meditative. Screaming your lungs out doesn't fit that kind of music. Also MJK simply can't do that anymore as is to be expected at his age. Add to that the years long wait between the albums. Not just we fans had to wait but also MJK since he only does lyrics after everything's finished. In this decade of doing "nothing" for Tool, he likely moved on and tbh I can't blame him. His focus is elsewhere but it is fine this way since now the other bandmembers get their spotlight. You just can't force it...that's not how bands work.
TOOL army: are we supporting this reaction? ❤
Silence
Maynard’s voice is viewed as an instrument not a lead vocal like most bands so his voice is typically mixed in the middle or behind the instrumental. The instrumental is like a cake and his voice is like the icing on top. 😂
Heard this album the day it came out. Blew me into another dimension, but I could barely comprehend it beyond the force of its musicality. Its been 22 years and I still listen it with regularity. Its a timeless masterpiece and every listen you gain some new insight, understanding, perspective, and hear new details and sounds in the soundscape. Immaculate engineering and production for when it was released in 2001, phenomenal instrumentation, haunting and empowering vocals, and a perfect balance between complexity and primal.
The Patient is a brilliantly written song--sadness, anxiety and depression all in one..yet a hopeful glint for "the Patient"
Some longing and yearning as well, also a sense of persistence
The Patient is underrated a lot but sounds even better live.
Early TOOL is different. Harder, angry, full of ANGST. They became PROG GODS by the time this album came out.
Check out their first EP OPIATE, then follow it up with their first LP UNDERTOW.
Great reactions! The thing with Lateralus song is that you don't get it until you do... then that song hit you hard in a emotional and inexpected way
In all fairness Lateralus is a lot to chew on a full first time Album listen, especially as a new listener who isn’t used to Tools method. I am glad he didn’t trash it.
Aenima is their gateway album and Lateralus is through the gateway into a new dimension 🤯
Regarding The Grudge scream it was roughly 23 seconds, when I saw them preform it live in 2022 Maynard still managed a 13 second one even after having Covid twice. Maynard also is the singer of two other bands A Perfect Circle and Puscifer you should check out!
That wasnt a scream you heard in 2022, come on now.
Danny's drumming on this was amazing. He won awards after this came out.
such amazing drumming
This is an album (and Tool in general) that gets better every time you listen to it, because the second time you will know what to expect, you will follow it better. The third time you will start to anticipate the changes. On the 10th time you know all the changes and you start to savior the details. And yes, on the 100th, you are still finding something new.
Tool is a one of a kind band. They sound like no one and no one sounds like them. Usually when a band comes up with a new sound a hundred other bands show up sounding just like them. No band has ever been able to copy Tool...they are just too genius of a band. The "Tool Army" love watching people discover Tool for the first time because you can only hear Tool for the first time once...we live Vicariously through reactors like you who get blown out of the water with this gift of a group. I would love to see you do another album reaction...any album. Tool Army will show up to support your journey...ask questions. Great reaction...Spiral out...Keep going! 🌀🌀👁
was such a wild ride and something I was truly stoked to check out, thank you for your kind words
Yes!!! Greatest album ever made, never gets old. This band has no equal. One of the greatest singers and lyricists to ever walk the Earth, the guitarist is a true sound architect and the drummer is probably an alien. This album just keeps on giving.
The story with Ticks and Leeches is that the studio execs told them they wanted a more radio friendly song and they were sick of being controlled so they put that very long middle section instrumental in to ruin the song as far as radio play and the lyrics were to the execs: is this what you wanted, is this what you had in mind, I hope you choke on it! Ha!
TOOL honestly don't have a bad track. Their DISCOGRAPHY is AMAZING. ✌️
Fr when i first started listening to them and heard people say that i was a little skeptical. But after hearing each song, they really dont have a single fucking bad song. Its crazy. Theyre all good most of them great amazing. Truly the best band in the world. Also the fact that theyre just as good if not better live... Just yeah. Tool man, Tool. Tasty.
OK!
Great honest first reaction! This band grows on you, and the songs that might be more difficult to get into at first can very likely become some of your favorites later on! Certainly the case for me🌀
Thank you! was a lot to take in, but had a lot of fun diving in
Love the reaction! Will watch any Tool album you do. Loooooooove it.
Rock on!
Once in a lifetime band!!! ✌
Enjoyed your reaction to this masterpiece! Would love for you to do another album reaction to tool! They're all amazing. I recommend listening to Ænema
Their albums take turns being my favorite but in my opinion this is their masterpiece. And I love how it sounds like you’re sitting behind Danny Carey’s drum kit. Great mixing.
I really enjoyed your reaction. Tool is one of my most favorite bands. They are incredible to see live. Going to see them again this October. My favorite tracks from the Lateralus album are Parabol/Parabola, Schism, Lateralus and the holy trinity... (Disposition, Reflection, Triad). Lateralus really had to grow on me. The more I listened to it the more i came to appreciate this masterpiece. I think you are right in that there is so much going on it's almost sensory overload. Looking forward to more Tool reactions from you. 😊
Glad you enjoyed the video, was such a wild ride but something I will never forget
Great video! More TOOL and more metal please!!! 🤘🏻
Tool songs just get better and better after each listen! You pick up on new things each time, they are geniuses
This album changed my life, I had heard Schism on the radio but had no idea who they were. I saw the Alex Grey artwork on the cd behind a dark tinted cover and decided to take a chance (definitely label shopped). I haven’t been as happy with a musical purchase since.
Jack!!!!! This is fkn great. Tool is a legendary band. I kid you not, as soon as I saw that you uploaded this earlier today, I looked at my brother who is a HUGE Tool fan && said, let’s go see them. Literally got tickets to see them in Salt Lake City so we’re flying from Los Angeles to Salt Lake City in October :)
I have been wanting to see them for so long && your reaction incentivized my brother && I.
I’m so glad I ran into your channel. You’re a gem dude. Absolute gem.
Thank you Legend, so glad you and your bro are going, their show would be legendary
Thank you for your awesome support always for the channel, really appreciate it
Lateralus is one of the best albums ever. But Aenima may be even better.
Finally!!! Favorite album of all time
My favorite band of all-time! Dive down this rabbit hole!!
Always a treat hearing a full album reaction. You miss so many track-to-track feelings in single-song reactions. Loved hearing your thoughts. TOOL is a band of contrast above all things. I find that makes them incredibly easy to listen to over and over and have different responses each time.
was such a wild ride, had a lot of fun
in a world of singles and streaming, i respect you doing full album reactions.
thank you!
Fair play man, going for a full album with no prior tool experience is a ballsy move, especially as most reaction channels just keep it to one song
Respect.
Last comment from me. LOL.
TOOL knows how to put out an album. Segues, Interludes, Backward Messages, Hidden Tracks, Album Art. Who does that anymore? TOOL DOES. ✌️
Lol. To think the transition between Parabol/Parabola is just Maynard hitting some vibrato and Adam turning his volume up 😅 hahaha. The little things make such a huge difference! Love this album
Subbed because TOOL. Keep going and spiral out. You will be amazed.
Hi Jack, great to see you putting out more and more videos these days. I would love to recommend Arcade Fire's 'Funeral' as an album that really accentuates your energy. It compares well to Radiohead's style and sophistication, and is thus considered one of the best indie rock albums ever produced. It's a gem. 10/10
Thank you! would love to check out some Arcade fire one day
Excellent choice. This is Tool's pinnacle, in my opinion, but all of their albums are thematically/lyrically deep and all instruments (just one drummer, one bassist, and one guitarist) are impressively composed, played, and mixed. I like Aenima just about as much as this album, and you should definitely check it out too.
My favorites on this album have to be The Patient, Reflection, and the Parabol/Parabola tandem. I can't get enough of that transition from Parabol to Parabola too. I had the pleasure of seeing Tool twice now - once when they toured for this album in 2001, and then more recently in (memory hazy) I think, 2017. THEIR SHOWS ARE AMAZING.
Mann this album is honestly such a ride, they would be so sick to see live !
Lateralus was difficult for me the first few listens, but eventually became my favorite. Give it a listen with lyrics up.
Great reaction!
Spiral Out
Thank you!
I call the short ones pallete cleansing tracks. It puts you in the vibe for the next journey.
I JUST bought the double LP for this album like 2 days ago. Awesome album from an awesome band
For a first time listener you’ve overloaded yourself but I understand. If you do more Tool you may want to take them one at a time like Zempest off their most recent album Fear Inoculum is over 15 minutes by itself but what a ride it is
Tool is a very complex band to digest. I imagine this first listen was strange. I personally love Tool and everything
what Maynard does. I invite you
to try Thirteen Steps of A Perfect Circle or Conditions of my parole of Puscifer, his other projects a bit
simpler but good.
Your reactions are very good and genuine.
greetings from Chile
Thank you Rodrigo, appreciate the kind words
I remember the first time I tried to catch that drum pattern. Finally I gave in, telling me to listen more, be open to receive the gifts, and be glad the burden isn't mine, like it was humbling me. It was that or the cactus.
This is my favorite band ever. This my probably my favorite album. The Grudge is on my top 5 of all Tool songs, and they are amazing in concert!
I've seen them about 6 times. I've been a hard core fan since 1993.
There is no band, and will never ever be a band like Tool. Thank you for your honest reaction.
The grudge is so badass. Glad you enjoyed the video :)
Welcome to the TOOL army, brother!
Thank you brother
Gotta continue into 10,000 Days next. You heard the Area 51 outro, it kinda ties into 10,000 Days with “Rosetta Stoned” and the interlude before it. Great reaction! Tool is a great listen Mate 😎
Thank you Matthew
In 30 years of listening to them, I’ve come to think of Tool as their own genre. If I could make a recommendation, do a song at a time through an album. Hard to follow chopped up songs. Keep on the tool rabbit hole!!
Thanks for the recommendation Tim! Such an incredible band
Hi! My 2nd Favorite band next to Radiohead!❤ i love your reactions!
Awesome! Thank you!
C’mon Jack… no comment on the didgeridoo used in Parabol???? 🤣 🤘🏻
P.S. the last few guitar notes in Parabola are an homage to the song Roundabout by the band YES…
I know went right over my head lol...
I saw the length of the video than realized it was for the album and not just the title track and knew it was not enough.
Maynard James Keenan (Lyrics, Singer, Synth, Satir), Adam Jones (Lead Electric Guitar, Synth), Justin Chancellor (Bass Guitarist), Danny Carrey (Drummer, Tabla, Gong, Percussive Synth) Danny is known as the Octopus because he can play 4 rhythm with each of his limbs at the same time without missing the beat.
19:34 perfecto
Love it first song you acquire the tool face. Melt in and ride the wave that is TOOL.
You just heard, arguably and in my personal estimation, the best album ever made. Timeless.
So, one of my favorite albums of the last several years was "Das Album" by WBTBWB (we butter the bread with butter). They are a genre blending band from Germany and some (not all) of the lyrics are therefore German but their transitions and drops and progression are top notch. It is quite good as an entire album and you are one of the few reaction warriors that do full albums, the playlist from their label on here includes the music videos for the songs that do have one, and those are extra entertaining. It may be worth looking at the song title translations if not the lyrics + translation just to have an idea of what each song is about (particularly the German ones). The titles give the gist but there are some crafty wordplays. And neck breaking drops.
that sound awesome!!
Absolutely Incredible album The Grudge is amazing track to start it off 💯🔥🚒💪
the grudge was so damm good
MOAR TOOL!
Wondering if youd like Caligula's Horse now..! Australian prog rock with some masterpieces of epic emotional storytelling.
The albums "In contact" and "Rise Radiant" are both awesome.
Songs like Will's Song, Graves, Valkyrie, Salt, Dream the Dead, are just always so powerful
Curious if youd react to them
thank you so much for the recommendations, so much good music to check out
Jack, you’re being embraced by the TOOL army :)
What an honor 💕
Was such a fun ride Tracey!
Don't know if anyone mentioned, but the audio from that last track is taken from an old (and classic) episode of Coat to Coast AM with Art Bell, a paranormal themed call in show from the 90s. A guy called in claiming he was a worker from Area 51, he was frantic and distraught as he tells his story, and eventually the radio station's audio cuts out to dead air, while Art scrambled to switch to a backup system. (ua-cam.com/video/jK6xkOizAbU/v-deo.html). A prank call with lucky timing, or something else? Was pretty fun stuff as a nerdy internet kid in the late 90's.
Good instinct on Parabola!!
Next full album reaction....Portishead Dummy....it is a whole different vibe. Trip hop they call it. A mix of hip hop, jazz and synth. Super cool!
would love to check out some portishead
@@cavemanjack as much as I would love for you to do an album review...there is a live performance that they broke down into single song videos..full orchestra and band...I would love a reaction to Glory box from that performance...soooo epic!
SUBSCRIBED. The lead singer is in two other bands. A PERFECT CIRCLE and PUSCIFER. Both bands also have amazing DISCOGRAPHIES. ✌
Thank you for the Sub!
For the love of TOOL.... Go and watch the video!!
I'm pretty keen to know what you do in your studio? Do you record yourself? Are you a producer for other artists? Details please 🙏
Do a little bit of this and that, My dad is a musical genius who I get a lot of my love of music from
Guitarist Adam Jones had a dog named Eon Blue. He died. Jones wrote that track about the pooch's apocalypse
Tool may be difficult to digest well listening to the entire album as your 1st album. Personally I would do one song at a time, the Tool Army will shop up droves!!
Tool always puts weird stuff if you listen long enough. At the end of a lot of albums have hidden track but its way after the end it keeps playing.
I really like you as a reactor! I think you're very honest in your reactions.. And I also think you got overloaded by all those masterpieces 😂 you didn't like that much Lateralus and I just think because it was too much info for you at that moment! After all those amazing tracks, Lateralus was just too much for you 😅 but give it a try once more! You will fall in love with that song, being one of the most beautiful songs EVER.
was a wild ride for sure, and I need to really dive into each of these songs some more. what an album!
Lateralus certainly pulls at your ankles and envelopes you in the darkness. An excellent experience. For a perfect contrast, I’m (again 😉) recommending Sigur Ros. A band that can pull you into the light. “Ágætis byrjun” is a good start. It’ll be a new favorite band for you.
I second the Sigur Rós :)
thank you for reminding me! really need to check them out :)
🌀❤️
The engineers are the genius in tool.
🤘🏻🌀
Still love Schism above all… I guess it is the easiest to love.
Some insanely impressive playing and singing throughout.
what a track!
Welcome to the Toolbox!🤟🏼
Life feeds on life feeds on life feeds on life feeds on...this is necessary...
Tool has an element of heaviness to them but it certainly doesn’t define them. These guys do what the fuck they want……and I’m here for it ✌️
The song Lateralus follows the mathematical Fibonacci Sequence and if you follow that sequence you end up with an infinite spiral (spiral out, keep going!). If you understand how even the lyrics are Fibonacci numbers syllable-wise and the time signature variables are also a Fibonacci number when combined, it's pretty amazing. You are one of the few who wasn't blown away by that song, it is one of their most popular with fans and critics.
wow that's actually incredible, this band has depths that are so rich
Tool is the sonic recreation of a lumbering giant, thick meaty steps.
Also, one has to listen to Rosetta stoned after Faaip de oaid
Last comment from me. LOL.
TOOL knows how to put out an album. Segues, Interludes, Backward Messages, Hidden Tracks, Album Art. Who does that anymore these days? TOOL DOES. ✌️
Hey boss. I like your review. Just a bit of feedback. When you intro your video, keep it chill. Don't go over the top. Keep chill. You dont need to do the whole I'm a yotuber and welcome back vibe. Thats cheesy and not authentic. Be you and you will succeed. Your enthusiasm and honesty in your review was excellent though. We dont need the welcome back fam bullshit. Cheers. I subscribed.
Yeah I really think you should've started with aenima or even undertow lol and yet me myself started with lateralus. But yeah I think you will like aenima a bit more than lateralus.
There's never been another band like Tool, theydont do mediocre I've loved them 31 yrs❤
Maynards voice is mixed intentionally low in the mix. Definitely keep going down the rabbit hole. Any album is a masterpiece in its in right and era released. Start at the beginning with Opiate and work your way up to Undertow and then AEnima
The Patient is a grower
You need to listen to Tool's Undertow.
So you are taking on this whole album, without prelistening to each track separately...Im surprised your head didn't explode... it's like when gen x locked themselves in a dark room and listened to the wall all the way through at like 12....changed forever.
23.5 second scream...it's all real
thats honestly amazing
Ticks and Leetches was not intended to be part of this album. The story supposedly goes that the music executives were expecting more of the same and the progressive elements made it hard to have a radio friendly marketable song, in their opinion, and they asked Tool to add a song that was more "Rock" and radio friendly. So Tool said F/U and made that song and intentionally put the slow down section in the middle to screw up the plans for a radio friendly song. It turned out to be an amazing addition to this album
It's gotta be quite the feeling to sit down to record a reaction to a new band and accidentally find the best album every created by the hands and mind of mankind.
Was a wild day that’s for sure haha
They never printed their lyrics in the album book... we were on our own for decades..
I didn’t realize I was singing the wrong words until the web was up 😂
The Greatest Album Ever Created.
Any relation to the wolfman jack caveman jack
not that I know of haha
If you wanna venture more into metal you should try toxicity by system of a down!
Reacción a Rosalía en tuya es muy bonita
He threw up at the end of that scream note on the Grudge
Haha ...WOW what irony. This is gold: "Lyricism without Lyricism spoke volumes to this song (Schism)". Brilliant observational statement of opinion you had...considering the song is ALL about COMMUNIATION
Ok you starting at this album is going to be unsettling. Please go to the beginning ans experience the changes. You should delve into TOOL as you dId with RADIOHEAD. TOOL is in its own category as well as RADIOHEAD.
Caroline Polacheck loves Tool lol
Hell yeah !
Some songs are just intermissions like Aenima was like that.
