- This is a bias binding how to video. These are the tips and tricks that give me a very flat, professional and non bulky finish on armscye and necklines using bias tape.
I always finish my sleeveless tops and dresses with bias binding on the inside of the garment. Over time, I have perfected the way to get the bias tape to lay flat and very aesthetically.
Here I show you my tips and tricks!

I learn so much from your techniques video...thank you for posting.
Perhaps your most useful tip for me. Thanks.
This is great! I’ve never seen anyone trim the binding before they start- I’m going to try that next time, because I’ve had a hard time getting armholes flat. Thanks, Karina!
And Sew On I’m happy to share the tricks 👍🏼
Thanks for the tip on trimming the bias tape!
Fantastic, easy method. Thanks again
You are adorable! Thanks for all the information!
You explain things so well. I’ve been binge watching your videos for the last few days, and I’m always impressed with how you explain techniques.
Thank you! Please keep up these awesome videos!
That's so cheap! I think I've seen rolls like that on Ebay. I end up making my own a lot of my own bias. The most common tape in our fabric stores is poly/cotton which is pretty stiff I think and a lot of times too much for a lot of fabrics. I'd love to be able to find such nice satin tape! That's an excellent tip about clipping! Hand sewing makes for such a beautiful finish! You are the queen of the sleeveless Karina, and all of these look so professional!
Elizabeth Made This actually finding the poly cotton is harder for me. This one is very soft and maleable and I’m so happy to have got my hands on so much!
I've recently made a bunch of rayon (viscose) bias tape because it is so much softer, very thin and malleable, which is great for my sensitive skin. Also, because it's so thin, it works for thinner, drapier fabrics. I used a "how to make continuous bias tape" video off youtube to make it quicker to make a LOT.
PS rayon is more malleable, so there's no need to clip it. Also, you can pre-curve the bias tape by pressing it into the shape of your armholes before sewing it on!
@@billiev8705 Making bias yourself is almost better. Rayon is so soft and easy to press into the curves for sure!
Oh my goodness what a great great idea I have a lot of your videos bookmarked for easy access so I don’t forget how to do these things
doowopshopgal I’m happy this is useful for you :)
Thank you, here in the UK we can buy narrower bias, so will get it next time. Great tip about using bias tape for circular/bias skirt hems too, I've always struggled trying to hem them without the tiny pleats/puckers. I liked the red binding on the navy dress, as it set off the tiny red flowers in the pattern, and 'lifted' the dress to a designer level :).
Good morning, I just tried your method on a baby facing yesterday. I knew you had shown it before, and I thought I remembered how, and then this showed up on this morning's feed. What good timing. I'll finish with confidence now LOL.
Janice K great!!
Karina have you got a hand sewing technique with advice how to stop hand sewing thread knitting every stitch 🙈, AND a ‘how to press seams ‘ tutorial too? They are what I struggle with so much. Many thanks for all you do Karina
Thank you so much Karina for taking the time to explain and demonstrate your bias binding techniques. I have learned so much from it and now cannot wait to put it into practice! 👍😁
Liz Cole I hope it works out for you!
I like this way of binding - a bit more work but a much neater finish. Thank you.
Thanks for sharing this tip, your clothes always look impeccably well made 👍
AB Sinthe thank you so much :)
Again thank you sooooo much, this really helped me. I have yet to do hand hemming bias tape, will try that one day.
NaturalDane I’m glad this helps. I find hand hemming relaxing but maybe that makes me weird 😂.
Great demonstration. ‘The rule’ is great! Love the way you stick too it, it makes great sense!
Thank you so very much for taking the time to show all the detail of how you apply the binding. I would not have known to trim the binding as you do. I will definitely try this technique in the future. Thank you again for very clear instructions on your very lovely finishing technique 😘❤️
This video came as I was trying to figure out binding armholes for Blank Slate's Leralynn dress. Thank you, as always, for your wonderful tutorials, Katrina. 🌸 I think you are our personal sewist mentor!
Chris Colson glad to help!
Thank you :D I have faild every time I tried to make armholes with bias binding, now I know why, I didn't cut away and clip in to it
cstrmbergcs that’s the real secret 😏
Very useful information! I will try this on my next woven top-Thanks again for sharing!
So glad that I found your blog!!!
So happy to have you. I hope you enjoy all the videos ☺️
Great info! I’ve been hunting satin bias tape but haven’t had much luck. Hopefully I’ll get my hands on some soon. Thanks for sharing!
Great tips! Your garments look so nice! I am now going on the hunt for this type of bias tape. I love your rule for hand finishing the hem and armholes of your garments. This makes so much sense to me! I shall apply your technique for both finishes (hand and machine). This is sure to help me elevate my sewing game! Thank you!! :)
Once again thank you for sharing. Your garments are beautiful and great tips for binding.
Nice video Karina! Great tips and thanks so much for sharing your knowledge with us. (Plus you have beautiful clothes!)
Myra Lorraine thanks!
Thanks for sharing your great binding technique. I have not seen this on any other channel. I will definatly given this to go as your garments do always look great.
very interesting, I will be doing thing from now on. thank you x
Clipping! Yay! Thank you!
Clipping has to happen, no way around it for a great collar 😄
I needed to know this - I have been struggling. Thank you!
Thank you for a great, inspiring video. You have made some beautiful garments! Show us more! Seeing what other people make really inspires us.
This video really help me, thanks for sharing your method! I never re-trim the bias and my binding is most of the time bulking! Now I will definitely try to trim the seam allowance. I love that you hand sewed one bias binding as well. I would love to see a video about handsewing. I really don't know where to start when it comes to handsewing !
Andréanne Abel I use slip stitch for everything. It’s the only hand sewing technique that I use. I’ll try to film it when I do it next.
I would also love to see this - my hand sewing is terrible, so it's not a 'high end' option for me! Would be great to learn and improve :-)
Beautiful fabrics and technique, congratulations.
Thank you so much ☺️
Thank you! Excellent techniques!
thanks for sharing your technique. Love to try this for my next projects
I love watching your videos! Your clothes are beautiful! You are one of my favorite vloggers.
Sew And Cher thank you so much!
Oh my goodness Karina, this has come at such a great time as I have just made a sleeveless top and wasn't particularly happy with the armholes. I'm doing it again and I'm just about to do the armholes again, so this has been super useful and spot on time wise 👌😉. Thanks so much for sharing your experience and skills and I will be looking out for some bulk buy bias binding 😉 👍😘
As I was watching a current video, you mentioned your bias binding technique. I was going to search for it but it popped up on my feed as I was watching something else! I struggled with getting double fold to enclose properly, so I think this will help! I can't wait to try it. Thank you and you are the best!
Thank you. Very useful
This was very helpful, Karina! Thank you!
Very nice.... I haven’t tried hand sewing mine yet, but I like your rule... makes sense:)
I know this is 3 years old, but I have only been sewing for just over 2 years. I have always had issues with bias binding and never found a tutorial that works for me, until I found this today. I have avoided patterns with bias binding, but not now. What an fab tutorial, have just done my neckline and it sits like a dream. I have now subscribed and see that you have a few tutorials for patterns which I have, so will be looking through a few of your vlogs. Thank you 🙏
Great tips and tricks. I like this technique and will be using it in my sleeveless endeavors. Thanks for sharing. I love all your videos.
This is the best video I've seen on finishing arm holes!!!! I had to adjust the blouse I made and was so stuck. Brilliant!!! You solved my dilemma 😁👍
Great tips for bias binding. I never thought of cutting the width of the binding. I can understand how that would cut the bulk, especially on thin sheer tops and skirts. I will try that. That's funny what you said about doing all your hand sewing when you watch tv, I do that, too.
I always noticed on RTW, the bindings are narrow. I thought the industry did that to save fabric lol but actually it does make sewn and it’s easier to manipulate :)
Thank you for your video!!!
Very perfect thank you
What great ideas and rules you have. Good for you
Thank you Karina! I have just finished the arm-holes and hem on a sleeve-less dress using your method of trimming and clipping - perfect result on both out-and-inside.
I'm watching your video library for more wonderful tips. Happy sewing!
Kerstin Shadbolt I’m so happy it worked well! It always gives me great results so I thought I’d share 😊
Just what I’m looking for - excellent! Thank you for the details
Thank you Karina. i have been sewing all my life and felt that I was always bound to use facings; that tape would never look good enough. But I followed your directions and it was perfect.
Great tip, thanks. Do you think you might do a video showing your hand stitch? Thanks
Karina what a wonderful video. This is what I was missing in my sewing practice. I had too much bulk at my armholes and my material was gathering and puckering. Reducing the bulk is key..though it’s tedious to trim down it really does give a couture finish? Thank you for sharing your sewing knowledge.
Your work is impeccable! Thanks for the finishing tips and tricks!
This so helpful, I love your tips, thank you so much for sharing them. Im in the processing of finishing a dress and am definitely going to use it.
All the best. I use this method over and over :)
Great tips but can you show how you join your ends please! Thank you I do enjoy your video's.
jkwarren1000 depends on my mood. I may just leave them as I attached the binding before doing the side seams. When I sew the side seams it will also catch the binding. Or, I’ll attach the extremes of the binding and then sew them on to an already sewn side seam.
You have a great bias binding/hem rule! Your work is so professional so it obviously works
Great tutorial Karina but would you do a video on how you attach the two ends of the bias tape please.
I won’t so a video specifically on that little area but this is how I do it every time: ua-cam.com/video/obuQzUtdYIQ/v-deo.html
You can find many more videos showing how to do it. I don’t sew it straight down.
Thank you!
I really love you technique videos ❤ thank you for sharing your skills.
Thank you very much karina
Thank you for demonstrating your techniques for using bias binding. Love using my 1/4" foot and 2 colors of thread with bias binding, also. I recently made a top with machine finished sleeves & hem. I wasn't going to topstitch the neckline, but after remembering your "rule", finished it with topstitching . Thanks for sharing!
Laura Jones it’s just an aesthetics thing 😂... to keep it consistent. But really it’s only what I like. You need to figure out if you like it too 😊.
Like you, I prefer either machine finishing everything or hand finishing everything. :)
Hi there and new to your channel. I just loved the tip about sewing the bias, especially hand sewing. Sometimes hand sewing things I found like a hem and bias binding to neck and armholes has a much nicer finish over machine sewing. I am new to garment sewing but have picked up that you don’t want to necessarily use your machine for everything. I love couture sewing techniques which is mostly hand sewing. It gives garments a less manufactured look but professional look. Thanks for your generosity in teaching this.
Love Love your videos, I have been sewing all my life and hate binding sleeves but i think cutting off the bulk will help me and satin binding also will make a difference.
. Thanks
Give it a go. I hated it too until I figured this could help and voila! It did :)
Thanks for the tips!
You’re very welcome :)
I was just struggling with cotton bias on arm holes. I’m so happy you did this video. Your technique is brilliant and a time saver compared to how I was doing it! Thank you so much. I’m so happy I discovered you on UA-cam. If anyone know where to ordered bias tape in bulk please let me know. I live in the US
Teresa Libby if you email me I can send you some links other subscribers have sent me :)
Graciassss
Thanks for sharing
Great video thanks... I love the 1/4 inch foot idea! I have some really lightweight fabric that I worried the binding would be too heavy for, but watching your video has inspired me to give it a try.
Joanne S by trimming off the binding and then the seam allowance it’s not heavy at all! The blouse I’m wearing is the thinnest printed silk and the binding worked beautifully 😊
Lifting Pins and Needles thanks, I’ll give it a try!
Beautiful dresses! Finishing a garment by hand give it an expensive look too.
Thank you so much. Yes the hand sewing makes certain garments look so much better. About the dress you wanted to see, it’s at the 7:00 minute mark here:
ua-cam.com/video/TtCnSVYD0ng/v-deo.html
Thank you, I can't believe I miss that. I replayed it several times!
I love that dress :) the fabric was one of a kind.
Thank you! Can you tell us if it is single fold... double fold... do you open it up and there fold it is half? How wide if opened up? I was unable to see clearly. GREAT VIDEO!
mie it’s I inch wide if opened up. It’s got a fold on both sides.
Just found this tutorial thank you so very much for sharing, love it. Also love the top you are wearing do you have a pattern for this please.?
The top is Simplicity 8216 and I have a vlog about it during April :)
Karina, Could you please do a tutorial on hemming a full maxi length skirt? This is mainly what I sew and I can’t seem to get a smooth finish with no puckers, to my hems.
Michele Mohamed are the skirts cut on the grainline or bias? Are they knit of woven? If you give me more information I could help you more specifically because there are many ways to hem depending on the style and the fabric.
I first saw this on Sian’s channel from England “Kittenish Behaviour”. She also uses the binding to cover the edges of seams sometimes. I think that’s called a Hong Kong finish. It’s a very nice effect. I’ve done cotton bias bindings, but I love the look of this satin finished tape a lot better. Great video!
Loriann Payne I don’t ever use the Hong Kong finish on seams... it make look nice but it’s bulky. When you press you’ll have the bias binding marks on the other side. I only use it trimmed like this for armholes and necklines. for hems I don’t trim it and make it narrower. Thanks for watching.
That makes sense! I prefer to use my serger on the seams and I’m very fortunate to have been given a blind hemming machine which is quick and amazing! Have a fun day...
You are awesome
Vivmom Sews here in the US uses seam binding also.
Thank you for sharing, Karina! I really like the blouse you are wearing. The colors look really good on you! What type of material is it?
susiekaiser1 my blouse is printed silk:) thank you
Thank you for sharing. I did have one question though, how do you join your bias binding together at the ends? Great videos!
sheena schultz depends on my mood. I may just leave them as I attached the binding before doing the side seams. When I sew the side seams it will also catch the binding. Or, I’ll attach the extremes of the binding and then sew them on to an already sewn side seam.
Thank you for this. I too was trying to see how you joined the binding.
I think I’ve heard you say in other videos that you prefer to add your own seam allowance so I’m assuming I would need to trim down the armhole seam allowance to the same 1/4” as that on the binding?
You have so many lovely dresses!
solstitches exactly :)
Thanks Karina, you have beautiful dresses, love the colours and styles you have created. Im so enjoying watching you sew and share your techniques. 👗👖🌸
Thanks for sharing! Can you show your hand sewing technique?
Kimbra Hannett it’s just a simple slip stitch. It’s the only way I sew by hand hems and armholes.
Do you trim the seam allowance on the garment to 1/4"?
When I’m making something sleeveless that is not meant to be, I try it on and reshape to what I like - and then sew the binding at 1/4”. If it’s already sleeveless, yes, I trim a little bit not that exactly.
Hi thanks for all your lovely videos. Please just tell me what the width of your bias binding. Here in SA we get different widths. Thanks again.
18mm
Hi thanks for your video hopefully that will help with my baggy armholes. Question can you use the same method on necklines I hate facings xxx
Lynn Watson yes you can use on necklines.
Love this technique using bias tape! Is your tape cotton, polyester, or silk? It looks super thin which is good.
Thank you Karina, this is very helpful. I do have a question for you though. Do you do the same technique with a knit fabric. I have a 100% knit that I need to finish the armholes with and was thinking of serging and then turning it over 3/8 inch and stitch. Do you have any other recommendation? Thank you, Jorja
Jorja Price I only bias bind VERY thick structured knits, bias binding as such does not give you and armhole with stretch and some patterns use a lot of negative ease. So I would be very careful. For patterns that don’t have that much negative ease and fabric that is think like ponte or scuba it should be fine. I have done what you say of serging and folding in but armbands give a better result in my opinion.
This video was so so helpful! Thank you.
Learned alot from this video. So glad I found it! I do have a question though. What fabric is your satin bias binding made of? I found some on Amazon that is made from a nylon but the description said it was elasticized as well. Does your satin bias stretch too? If not, I will keep on looking for a satin type bias binding. Thank you very much.
The fabric is satin, because it’s on the bias, if you pull it, it will stretch as any other woven. It is not elasticized as such. You can make your own bias tape and that’s super fun too. I have a video on the channel that shows the how to :)
I found some satin bias on Amazon UK from Katie's Boutique at £11.99 for 144m. Seemed too good to be true but it is lovely.
have a link that shows how to join the ends of the bias tape in an armhole or neckline? thank you for this tutorial; its very helpful.
This is a more up to date tutorial that includes that BIAS BINDING up a storm! 3 great WAYS + one I DISLIKE WITH PASSION. Neat woven armholes & necklines.
ua-cam.com/video/bc2wTbtBn9I/v-deo.html
I’m getting ready to make my own bias tape for hemming.... I knew you had done a tutorial in bias tape and thanks to your organizational skills with your channel, I found it easily...
I try really hard to use the right key words so that they are easy to find :)
I’m also trying to organize it all on my website.
Hello Karina...You are an accomplished seamstress. Question: how do you join seams for bias tape? Do you pre-measure circumference and sew bias tape together before pinning to armhole and attaching? Thank you for your feedback!
I don’t pre measure. You can see it here at minute 18 ua-cam.com/video/DZxvL2FHTzs/v-deo.html
I do love this technique. I however, don’t care for the Wrights brand cotton binding. It is crispy and stiffens any edge you use it on. I’d love to find this satin type. So if anyone finds this type in US please post!
Aquilterknits actually he cotton one is hard to find here....
Hi Karina, your tips are life saving... Do you stretch the binding a little or not at all when applying?
Depends on the fabric. The store bought satin one, I don’t stretch, if it’s self made with linen, cotton or rayon, I do stretch a tiny tiny bit.
@@LiftingPinsandNeedles thanks, that's very helpful.
Hello Karina! This was a very good video on your process. You made it clear and easy to duplicate.
I have been on your UA-cam for a few days viewing a lot of videos from many different makers on how to raise an armscye so the underarm is not showing. But I have not seen any that have been helpful. Have you done a video that I missed? I thought I went through all your videos but just wanted to check with you.
I am working on the George + Ginger Bonus Tank top and I have made many adjustments, but this is something I hope to fix before I cut into any further fabric with this pattern. Thank you kindly for your response. Any Ideas appreciated. By the way I would like to bring it up about 3 inches. Thanks again!!!
Have a look at my video on the Claudia dress from Sinclair patterns. I showed how I raised the armhole there in detail :)
@@LiftingPinsandNeedles Oh THANK YOU!!!! Also, Karina....no feature fridays anymore with LN?
@@MiddleEastMilli not today. Tami and Tessa are on a little vacation :)
@@LiftingPinsandNeedles Vacation? Vacation? What is that??? LOL You too! You never stop! I am protesting to you! You need a vacation too! LOL
Great tutorial can you tell me do you still do. 1/4 inch seam even if the pattern says 5/8 would it not make the arm hole smaller.
Depends on the style. If the armhole is already fitting well, it’s trim the seam allowance to 1/4”, bit if I’d like a bit more coverage, I won’t trim and I’ll sew at 1/4”. I decide this by trying on and seeing how it fits. I rarely trim away seam allowance to be honest. I like a lot of cover on my armholes.
Thank you loved the tutorial
how wide is the bias binding on the roll. Thanks !
cindy smith 18mm with
Great technique - thank you! How wide is that satin bias tape? 3/4" wide?
It’s 18mm or almost 3/4” wide.
I love this video, I appreciate it so much. I think I've watched it 10 times! 😂
I have two questions:
1) Do you only use satin bias tape?
2) How wide is the tape you're using in this video when it's finished? I'm assuming 3/4"?
Thanks so much!
I also make my own. See this video ua-cam.com/video/vFzOm4dcOC0/v-deo.html and yes, 3/4” is what I usually use.
@@LiftingPinsandNeedles That you! I appreciate it so much! I have learned so much from you. ❤️
Hi. Two q's
When you hand stitch, are you meaning just a slip stitch?
Could a blind hem stitch work? I can't imagine a way it could without leaving a stitch line.
I just do a slip stitch and only grab a fiber.... you can't see anything on the right side of the fabric at all. I'm not a fan of the blind hem on the machine.
Hi! Do you use straight stitch when sewing knit fabrics? Thanks
Guessing the bias tape doesn't stretch?
