- Welcome to Sew Steady Sundays with educator Kate Quinn. Today Kate shares a Fun and Fancy mashup with the Circles on Quilts template set to create a unique medallion. Kate also shares a spectacular new tool for Bernina BSR owners. Join Kate as she shares the new Bernina BSR capable table and the Westalee Fun and Fancy template collection. Be sure to join next week for part 2.
UPDATE: Sew Steady is not able to cut the BSR for older tables or inserts, but can cut the BSR opening into inserts, large tables, and wish table, and other tables sizes by request. The cutout option for the BSR must be selected when purchasing the table which adds an MSRP of $80 to the table price. #SR is the part code.
Today Kate shares innovative ways to pair the Fun and Fancy template set with the Circles on Quilt template set. She is focusing on the even numbered fan but any one of the fans can be used in a similar fashion. This medallion fits in approximately a 25” square but she is using a larger piece to add additional design elements.

LLove this design….beautiful!!
So glad :)
hi l love your work , l just found your video's been new to ruler work your videos are great Thank you
Thanks for the kind comments :)
I don’t feel like it’s complicated with you showing step by step but when I seen the pic, I was like wow that’s looks hard.
Yeah-you went straight to a teacher heart with your comment. We just want to break it down so it is easier!!
What is a vsr? The design is great and thank you for so many ideas.
Knowing the size helps people who have other rulers figure out if they could make a similar design. I don't have the ones you are using, but found a.couple of rulers in my collection that will let me explore similar design styles.
I learned soooo much! Thank you!
I'm so glad! You are very welcome. K
This has probably been asked but is this a Sew Steady method of using the BSR foot or an update from Bernina?
This is a Sew Steady adaptation-not from Bernina but it works great.
What is that handy little blue measuring tool that you are using? Where can I get one?
This is called a spacing gauge. Here is where you can go to find it:

Thank you!
I love this I am going to try
I am so sorry to be late! I always look forward to your expertise 💝
This BSR is very interesting. Do you think someday it might be available for use with other home electronic sewing machines?
Honestly I would hope they can do that in the future. Bernina initiated the BSR but I can see others adding it as the technology moves forward. It may take some time before all have it and the questions will be "as what cost"?
❤ no
Do you have any tips for using the Westalee templates on large projects? Using them is pretty straightforward on small projects like table runners or fat quarters but sometimes it's a real challenge when quilting a large project on a domestic machine. Thank you so much. P.S. Love your videos!
This is a common questions. Rulers cannot make the weight of a quilt sandwich less or make a quilt less bulky. This is still tricky and requires constant management. Try working in small areas at a time and make sure the quilt is supported on the work surface. Don't try to quilt long work areas that pull a larger section of the quilt. This will help. Then as you move along make sure you repackage your quilt as you go along to keep it a workable space. I usually think about 12 square at a time for the work area and pool enough fabric around the needle that I can move through that quilting area.
Thank you for your great advice. I have quilted several baby quilts using rulers and often felt as though I was trying to stuff a 2 quart octopus into a 1 quart jar! Probably because I didn't break It down enough. It can be a struggle sometimes but lesson learned. I will certainly implement your advice on my next project. Love your videos and really love your creativity with the Westalee rulers. Please keep up the great work!
Kate, what paper do you use to draw out your ideas? I'm having a difficult time trying to find large enough paper to draw out major designs. Thanks in advance!
I use a newsprint sketchbook that is 18x22 which is close to fat quarter size. I bought it at Staples.
@@katequinnoffabquilts Thank you! So love everything you dream up!
Not complicated at all.
