I've been a bassist for over 20 years, and I never bothered to learn to read music. On the rare occasion I can't play by ear or trial and error, there is always online tablature.
Ichika is the one man I know that can be ridiculously technical, while still being melodic. He makes me want to quit any instrument I try. With Davie, I can at least laugh while crying, but Ickika has no mercy
picking up bass as my first string instrument its always been weird. All of my guitarist friends would just pick up my bass and just start to shred but it is awesome and really informative that people realize its a totally different skill set, and guitarists and bassists alike realize its its not just as simple as playing guitar with less strings and bassists knowing guitar isn't just bass with more strings. They have their own skill set and their own place in the band/setup
What I realised when switching from the guitar to the bass guitar was, that it's helpful to have your mind set up completely new and forget about the guitar skill whatsoever, except for the pick - I am used to it and makes the attack just next level... -, otherwise you actually just look and sound lost! A bass guitar appears similar, which it is in some way, but the approach playing along to a song is absolutely different! Check the clip of Glen from SpectreSound!!!
I very much enjoy this "Metal Guitarist Tries" series. I support multiple parts where you're actually improving and working on areas (like reading sheet music, playing another instrument, etc.).
This made my day. You had me laughing so hard. Not that it matters, but I respect you even more now. So many guitar players think that there is nothing to playing the bass and it's easier than guitar. Maybe in some aspects, but you just showed it's not always the case. As a bassist, thank you for putting out this video.
Best to just think of Ichika as a robot god and not compare yourself to him. Guy played beautifully on a harp after one month. Anyway I much enjoy watching you decide to skip the basics and then freak out at the super advanced stuff. Keep it coming! 😂
"Ok, so bass might not be a conspiracy, it might be real" - One of my favorite lines I've heard in a long time, ha!!! As a guitarist, I love how bass came second in behind guitar in every "how to" search hahah
As a bassist who had to go the opposite route thanks to pandemic reality, having to learn to play guitar to continue making music in this solo at home musician world, it was nice seeing your exploration. :) I feel ya on the distance in string spacing and the general size difference giving you crap when switching over. Trying to play guitar I feel like I'm holding some ukelele tinker toy that's gonna break if I play slightly aggressively and trying to make chords on guitar feels like I have to compress and shrink my hand into this tiny little claw in order to not overshoot the fret I'm aiming for by a full octave. xD Always enjoy your "tries to learn" videos dude, entertaining stuff. P.S. OH BTW, about making chords on bass, yes you absolutely can however as you saw because of the lower fundamental frequencies it will sound like muddy crap without tweaking your EQ and technique a bit. Larger chordal intervals helps in order to spread out the frequencies along with using basic two-note "cheater chords" (as I call them) instead of the full-on chord shape. Oh, and go ahead and use a pick bro. 1mm is a good all around size for bass on the quick. There's still a bunch of the old boomer mentality out there about "Bassist only use ______" but you can completely ignore all that crap. Lemmy, Chancellor, Squire, Bobby Vega, etc. All pickers, all legends.
I really enjoyed your beginning on the bass! When i started playing bass, it was much worse! You know, you had some knowledge at your beginning behind the bass, i hadn't! So good job for the first time!😁👍🏼
Fuckin loved the video, but I do have a couple points of note if you ever plan to revisit to make it easier on you: 1. That specific bass has one pickup and it's not ideal for placing your thumb. Resting it on the B string between the pickup and neck will be easier for finger style. 2. While scooping the mids on guitar is perfectly acceptable (and sometimes even encouraged) a significant portion of the overtones for bass are in the mids (between 200-500 hz especially). Using your guitar's amplification settings is a *sin* 3. Since the space between frets on a bass is about 33% larger, using your ring finger is a pretty big uh-oh in the first 7 to 10 frets depending on your hand size and spread. You'll start aching pretty quick if you don't just use your pinky. 4. Davie is God, slap that like button 5. For slaps and pops, use the knuckle on the outside of your thumb, but you don't need to slam the string. Just a little love tap. You probably will hurt your knuckle if you go right in trying to smite that B string. Popping is a lot easier since you just lift the string and let it go like a bow and arrow. 6. Chords aren't super important on bass, but the shapes are. It's really tough to find nice chords on bass since the mids can get kinda muddy very quickly. Major 7 chords are pretty easy to sound nice. But mostly just getting those shapes can reduce movement (because it's a good bit harder to shift up and down as easily as a guitar) 7. Have a nice day :) 8. (This is just for any guitarist wondering about bass) Bass is not easier than guitar. It's a different instrument. It's like asking if a Tuba is easier than Trumpet. They appear very similar, and might even sound similar, but they play completely differently. It's easy to get caught up in the memes of it all, but your knowledge of guitar only goes so far to playing bass. You can't just grab a bass and a pick and assume you're the next Flea.
