Mark Knopfler’s new special recording of his anthemic ‘Going Home (Theme From Local Hero)’, produced by his longtime collaborator Guy Fletcher (who has edited the contributions into a 9 minute piece), features an unprecedented line-up of some of the greatest guitarists in history. ‘Legendary’ does not begin to cover it - David Gilmour to Ronnie Wood, Slash to Eric Clapton, Sting to Joan Armatrading, Bruce Springsteen to Pete Townshend, Nile Rodgers to Joan Jett, Brian May to Tony Iommi, Joe Walsh, Sam Fender and many more jaw dropping names.
And, in a great honour, the track opens with Jeff Beck’s final recording.
Roger Daltrey, Teenage Cancer Trust’s Honorary Patron and co-founder of Teen Cancer America (with Pete Townshend), added harmonica, and Beatles icon Ringo Starr is on drums along with his son Zak Starkey, their two drum tracks switching from one to the other, revealing an unmistakable family style. Sting completes an extraordinary rhythm section on bass.
With artwork designed by Sir Peter Blake (The Beatles, The Who, Band Aid, Paul Weller etc), this release is a landmark in rock music history.
Full list of contributors:
Joan Armatrading, Jeff Beck, Richard Bennett, Joe Bonamassa, Joe Brown, James Burton, Jonathan Cain, Paul Carrack, Eric Clapton, Ry Cooder, Jim Cox, Steve Cropper, Sheryl Crow, Danny Cummings, Roger Daltrey, Duane Eddy, Sam Fender, Guy Fletcher, Peter Frampton, Audley Freed, Vince Gill, David Gilmour, Buddy Guy, Keiji Haino, Tony Iommi, Joan Jett, John Jorgenson, Mark Knopfler, Sonny Landreth, Albert Lee, Greg Leisz, Alex Lifeson, Steve Lukather, Phil Manzanera, Dave Mason, Hank Marvin, Brian May, Robbie McIntosh, John McLaughlin, Tom Morello, Rick Nielsen, Orianthi, Brad Paisley, Nile Rodgers, Mike Rutherford, Joe Satriani, John Sebastian, Connor Selby, Slash, Bruce Springsteen, Ringo Starr and Zak Starkey, Sting, Andy Taylor, Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks, Ian Thomas, Pete Townshend, Keith Urban, Steve Vai, Waddy Wachtel, Joe Louis Walker, Joe Walsh, Ronnie Wood, Glenn Worf, Zucchero.

Cancer kills more teenagers and young adults in the UK than any other disease.
For those who survive, going through it without the right support can be devastating - physically and emotionally.
Cancer is different when you are younger: It can be harder to get a diagnosis, cancer treatments can be less effective for young people, and accessing clinical trials can be harder.
Teenage Cancer Trust funds specialist nurses and youth workers to be there for a young person when cancer has turned their world upside down and to help make sure cancer doesn’t rob young people of the best years of their life.

Can we just take a second to remember Michael Brecker, who played sax on the original, he died in January 2007 from Leukemia, a legend amongst Saxophonists.
Up there with Clarence Clemmons
Thanks for this -- I always loved that sax solo.
Mel Collins played sax on original

@@user-cx3ks1pr8s Nope, it was Brecker.
My son went to Newcastle University and sadly died in Newcastle aged 23 first time I’ve heard this record and it’s had me in floods of tears. It just brings back all the memories we had visiting him at uni. Thanks to everyone for making such a beautiful recording. ❤️❤️🙏🙏
So sorry for you
🙏🙏
Mi dispiace tanto.😢ciao da Torino.♥️
Bless you
Sad and sorry for your loss RIP you will meet again on the other side of your jouney
My wife passed away from cancer in January
Listening to this with tears running down my face
beautiful
Love and peace to you.
Mine in December. Grief is love with nowhere to go.
My thoughts are with you from Sweden, hang in there, your wife lives on in your memories🇸🇪💚
Not alone, Buddy.
The opening is haunting, and tearful. RIP Jeff Beck. "Going Home" a perfect outro, with his intro.
Those first notes by Jeff Beck brought tears to my eyes. Still miss him desperately. Long Live Jeff Beck~!
How do you know that the first notes (I mean the intro at the very beginning) are from Jeff Beck? I would so much like to know when anyone is playing. Do you have any source of information? Could you even provide who is playing at what time?
Yes, may Jeff Beck live on in our memories and recordings forever.
I recognize at the first note too
@@oneirdaathnaram1376 It says so in the description of this video.
That sound is unmistakeable. That's Beck
Interesting they let him contribute after that mess of a solo on Private Dancer. Knopfler called it “the world’s second-ugliest guitar solo”
A very dear friend of mine died last year from cancer. She loved this theme. She would have loved this version. I miss you Catherine, every day. Rest in peace.
Class. No egos. Iconic. All for a very special cause. Thank you all!
Been a Mark and Dire straits fan from early 80's schooldays, am still today. What an amazing musician this man is. 5* + 5* . This is a cherry on top of an amazing career. Thanks Mark.
I effing love this version
Mark Knopfler -- providing the soundtrack to my wife's and my life together over the last 43 years. Comforting during the low times, uplifting during good times and bringing tears to our eyes whenever his music is there, helping to celebrate the outstanding high times.
Thank you.
Fabulous comment, congratulations on 43 years together, i hope you have another 43 ❤
You also told my story... 34 years so far
Same here, also 43 years, beautifully summed up, lucky to know some of his band.
37 here.......brilliant
You have 20 years on me, but I can appreciate the sentiment and ideas of finding joy and solace in Mark Knopfler's music.
Thanks for what you gave us, Mark.
For being by my side, for 40 years 😘
I am grown man who has listened to this song for 35 years. I am in tears. This is a beautiful rendition and is for such a good cause. Massive respect to Mark and all the collaborators on this track 👏
Portugal here , 32, my dad used to put me to sleep with this song. Still works and I miss him so much

Excelente escolha por parte do teu pai. São essas memórias que o mantém vivo!!

That is so beautiful. RIP and long live the memory of your dear Dad. He was a good man if he did so ❤
És muito novo. Eu lembro me de vir das aulas do ensino preparatório e isto era a musica na RTP a meio da tarde para abertura da telescola
Wow wow wow. Already bought it.Nothing finer in life then to listen to Mark or Gilmore. Can only imagine what it would be like to listen to those two playing together. HEAVEN
Completely agree with you
Haunting hearing Jeff Beck at the very start.
Gilmour
Then you can look up and watch the French and Saunders sketch where they have a court case against Ralph McTell...

The only words I can think off are a BIG THANK YOU Mark, Guy and everyone else who contributed to this extraordinary, historic piece of music. Hope this raises millions for the 2 incredible charities. Dire Straits also funded the first treatment ward for Teenage Cancer Trust in UK almost 30 years ago. We are blessed to have Mark in our lives. ❤
Oui...🎶
I'm french and for me, Mark is a great genius !
He's one of the best guitarist and songwriter of all the time that i've ever seen in my life !
I'm 52 years old and i listen his music since i've 13 when i have discovered "alchemy" in 1984 !
One of my favorites of all time. I'm 73 and I want this played for me when I take my final bow. Yeah, a video would be great.
I appreciate your love and support ❤️ where are you from?
Wow. Just wow. How the hell does something as simple as a melody bring tears.
No lyrics, no attachment really to the movie, just the list beautiful melody I have ever heard, and had the honour from time to time over the years to perform a pretty rough rendition at pubs around SE Queensland Australia!!
Thanks to you icons who make up the soundtrack of my life !!
Mark Knopfler saved my soul growing up
Mine too. Norway
Mine too.
Mine too. 🇵🇹
Mine too.
71 years old my life in one track speechless
was, that's a great way of putting it...,Peace
Well said. Not far behind you ✌️
I'm grateful that Life waited 70 years to lay this tune on me. Any time before this I wouldn't have heard The Magic. I believe that I may have finally come of age because this tune has moved me to tears of joy, sorrow and understanding. Carry on knowing that you know good stuff when you hear it. Peace.
That’s Jeff Beck on the intro. Gotta be. Unmistakable 🙌
Yeah, and it also says so in the description...
Sounds like Titanic theme lol
This song is from the film Local Hero, filmed most famously on the Moray Firth. Last year my mother died at home after a brief illness, overlooking the Moray Firth which she loved so much.
This song for me is forever associated with the Moray Firth. You can have it too, Newcastle. And this fabulous version is surely for everyone. Go order a copy. Help give hope to a teenager with cancer.
"I have an idea, let's have around 100 guitarists playing together, and it should not sound like a mess". Only Guy Fletcher can pull this off. I love Mark and Guy, they are the dream team. I am so glad they found each other to give us all these fantastic albums. Best producers in the world ?
I have been a hardcore fan of MK my whole life. But the more I listen to the last solo albums, so more I wonder if I am a fan of MK, or if I am a fan of MK and Guy Fletcher.
Dire Straits has always been the go to music to test hifi setups. The audio quality is second to none.
Except Paul Carrack is not real a guitarist of note, he is a singer. Can still remember the first time I saw Paul singing with Mike + the Mechanics, so long ago now. Wish he would have stayed with Rutherford till today, now that Nik Collins is the drummer...
J'ai les larmes aux yeux quand j'écoute cette performance, quel bonheur et joie je ressens, merci Mark et tous les talentueux guitariste💖💗💓🩵💜💙💚💛🧡
Can there be anything more beautiful than trying to find out which legendary guitarist is playing those amazing guitar tones without seeing their faces? You made my day…
Not quite actually. One legendary guitarist is all that's ever needed per track, and this isn't the one-time exception to that rule.
Mr. Hank Marvin tone is very easy to recognize.
@@digger76Yes, although many players, few are instantly recognisable. Bryan May, Duane Eddy, Knopfler,Beck, Gilmour and of course Hank are easily identifiable. Shame Hank is not pictured with his famous fiesta red Strat and left handed with a Maton.
Fuck cancer! Because you have to live long enough to hear something as precious as this. THANK YOU
Great to see Hank Marvin in prime position here,he was the seed and inspiration that sent Mark on this incredible musical journey.
His photograph is displayed the wrong way round. He's not left-handed.
You’re right, should really be a strat’ as well.
So very true...and direct from Mark's mouth....up to the red and white guitar...
Great touch for Jeff to start us off 🎸 RIP
Now THIS is something special! I never thought I would ever hear most of my guitar heroes in one song. This shows us that Mark has a special place in the guitar world. Thank you Mark!
Along with Highland Cathedral this was played at my mums funeral in 1993!local hero was her favourite film and we went on a day trip to where it was filmed n she loved it. Thanks Mark .....u aare part of my musical journey!
Can’t say what’s already been said - wow. has to be one of the greatest instrumentals of all time. The musicians are real, genuine and you hear it coming through the music ….❤
Crying, while grinning ear to ear
Thank You, (Sir) Mark Knopfler!
This man is our local hero, when they play this at Newcastle home gates it makes the hairs on your neck stand up……God bless you Mark ❤
Not being able to get tickets often due to the cry for them I managed to get 2 tickets for the Milan game prior to Xmas...and so right as soon as this struck out over the ground I was chilled to the bone.....there with my almost 70 year old father who was visibly touched by the song and atmosphere....Good Times.
Hope they never change it ❤ howay the lads
I have spent my entire morning listening to this endlessly on repeat.
So moved by the music, the nobility of the cause, the collaboration, the mix of styles, many instantly recognisable ….. some trickier.
So many heroes of my 70-year lifetime.
Not a dry eye in my condo.
THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART TO ALL THOSE INVOLVED !! ✊🏼
Awsome! Thanks dad for introducing me to Mark Knopfler.

When all our rock 'n roll heroes have left us, I imagine this is what 'The Great Gig in the Sky' would sound like! Wishing all those who have lost loved ones to cancer, love and peace. We will all go home someday. And to the survivors who chose to live instead of waiting to die! I hope this track gets billions and billions of views!! Music has the power to change the world, one heart at a time 🌎
PS: This track will live on forever....What an era the 60s, 70s, and 80s were for epic rock 'n roll, so blessed to have all these heroes.

I’m sorry for your loss, Elizabeth and am glad this helps you.
Grane Mark! Sembra ieri la prima volta che ho visto i Dire Straits. Era il 16 settembre del 1992 al Palaeur ROMA ❤
Fell in love with going home as a teenager 30 years ago... This version makes me cry. Sweet, melancholy, Electric, powerful, epic, so many soloist parts each with a distinctive signature by a guitar Hero... they are like a thousand colours on a painting. This is rock in its finest form, this is art with a noble aim, this is the beauty we need
Words fail me. Brought me to tears. Thanks to all who played or otherwise contributed.
How I love this special performance. This whole group of top 1 guitar players together playing with MK his most popular instrumental song. It sounds like glory! It is unrepeatable!
For me, I love Mark Knopfler epic solos (Tel Road, Brothers, Speedway etc) more than anything. But in general recordings, what I REALLY listen for are the fills and licks and throw-away twiddles!!
AND THIS RECORDING IS FULL OF TINY KILLER MOMENTS!!
Not a dry eye in my house!!
Been listening on and off for 8 hours (so far) today, and I can’t describe how much I love this !!!!!!!
This was played at my husband’s funeral last year. It was his all time favourite tune and he would have loved this version. It’s breaking me up already.
My dreams comes true. Brian May and knopfler together. Woooow
... and Gilmour... and Springsteen... and Beck... and Clapton... and Wood... and... :)
Once again our boy Jeff has managed yet again to leave us perfection , bless him.
Thanks for all. I have cancer and love your music🙏🎶

Incredible new version of this masterpiece Mark wrote a long time ago…
Class never fades
Mark touches your soul like nobody else can.
Real human beings, real music
Thank you Guy Fletcher and Mark Knopfler
Thank you all
You guys are the best! Thanks for all you've been doing to support one another. Thanks Mark for your music and your kind heart.
Mr Knopfler has brought me so much joy through his musicianship! My wife and I used Theme from Local Hero as our primary music during our wedding going on 30 years ago.

Thanks Mark Knopfler.... Jeff Beck brings me to tears as well.
I'm 53 now. Heard it as a teen way back in 1985 Bombay-India. Instantly fell in love with it as watched it 1st time on The Wembly Live concert (on VHS). Watched it everyday for about a month. Still recall MK & his hero Hank Marvin. Their guitars talking back & forth (the intro). Post Dire Straits Mark has been & continues to be my Poet-Story telling songwriter & guitarist. Thank You Mark-Guy Fletcher. God bless you.
This song is one of the best I've heard in my life.
I am a young guitarist.
You are literally my heroes and I am actually very happy because music has not died yet.
My congratulations
And I want my MTV!!
If there was ever a song that made me proud to be a Geordie 🥰🥰🥰
The 'track of my years' for so many reasons, thank you.
Dire Straits and then MK have kept my soul from burning out. His music and the wordsmith like words are my constant companion. My pets, Maya and Claire, calm down as soon as I put on his music! MK and everyone associated with his music composition, we thank you dearly!
What a great version of this instrumental classic from Mark. And then, according to the cover, there were people like Eric Clapton, David Gilmour, Slash and Brian May. Just awesome!
France here, 52, Guitarist... MK is my absolute Guitar Hero! As someone said once, God exists, he plays guitar on Earth. 💜💜💜

We need a video...David Gilmour..
@@davidgilmour5555apparently a video is coming next week
Congratulations to all involved. Poignant to hear Jeff Becks perfect introduction to the piece, said to be his last recording. But it's probably wrong to mention any individuals when it's a team effort. For those wanting a video, I don't think it will happen as it took 2 years of gradually added individual contributions to slowly construct this wall of sound. Maybe the best video would simply be to revisit the wonderful movie for which this is the theme.
Hear hear!
Guy Fletcher confirmed that there will be a video. Next week.
Probably you are right and wise in stating that we should not individualise the different guitarists.
But I cannot help that I am damned interested in knowing who and when ! 😅😂
@@progmeuppresumably a mash up of each artist recording their respective parts I'd imagine
Thank you for mentioning Jeff Beck. To many his individual guitar work can *seem* inaccessible, so hearing him start this song can help steer people to give him a listen.

Only Mark could get all these people to play.

Feeling nostalgic remembering Mark Knopfler always ending the shows with the beautiful tune Going Home. this new version is absolutely spectacular & how special having Jeff Beck’s recording at start of the track, congrats to Mark & all the amazing musicians 👏👏
Jeff Beck recognition is proof that he was the greatest guitarist on the planet, our loss that he was not fully appreciated by his own countries music industry.

I'm glad to see him again now! I (67) have been following his incredibly good, recognizable music (sound) since the very beginning! And of course his wonderfully matching voice! I met these musical wizards when I was 17 years old, in 1984. They became part of the best moments of my life and I was one of the lucky ones who was able to see them in my city, Gijón, under the Asturian orbayu. I will never forget that night!! The Original is one of my favourites aswell, I, remember being a kid, and my Dad introducing me to his favourite music, and the original was one of them, my Dad is no longer with us, but the fact this song is out there now, is amazing, and hopefully will bring attention to the original.
