Mike is a bloody genius! Not only did he create awesome pedals, but also the best vacuum tubes money can buy and SOVTEK amps . . . . . . of which he reissued a MIG-50 quite recently.
At first, I thought one was for bass and the other for guitar. Pretty cool that they give you a choice of graphics. I love EHX, first pedal I've ever purchased was a Big Muff and I've been hooked since. Digging these new units lately.
I'm so tempted to buy this pedal.i currently use a Boss BD-2 Blues driver for drive.but I think I got room on my pedal board for this pedal. I'm thinking Crayon into Bigmuff would so sweet.🤔
I almost always use overdrive anyway, so I like how it has a built in EQ (more than my blues driver anyway). I also play a strat so this video really sold me on this. I already have an Analogizer but oh well, I really like EHX drive pedals.
Now this just aint fair guys...another awesome EHX pedal that I MUST own!! ;-) Love the warm tones this pedal gives out and I think, just as the name suggests, it would work on my pedal board to add some depth and colour to my sound. Way to go EHX..we love ya!! :-)
hmm there were more comments a few minutes ago. I looked at the one the guy mentioned in the comments before they got deleted. It sounded terrible like a ripped speaker and full bass. This pedal from EHX sounds awesome. This pedal will find its way into my home in the near future.
I just got one in the mail, I am really digging this overdrive, I've been using it with a Strat through a Hiwatt DR504 head, 4X12 bottom, a tiny bit of reverb after the CRAYON, I can't get a bad sound out of it, it's a classic rocker...for $62 it is a very good drive, I have a ton of dirt pedals(many, many, many overdrive and distortion pedals, some very expensive) this CRAYON is totally a keeper and will remain on my board, I only wish I received the one with the black bottom and crayons facing up...but wtf...Good job ehx
I actually love this one. I bought about a year ago and I don't think I've taken it off my board since except to experiment with stacking layout(before/after).
I am waiting for an ehx unit that has every ehx sound and effect..including the "fulltones" comment as a sampled sound just for kicks. I know, this pedalboard effects unit would cost 5000, but I could finance it
Coming back to this demo due to the fact that starting with a good overdrive then having that EQ makes all the difference. Shame on pedals with just a silly 'tone' knob
So is there any difference between the 69 and 76 besides the paint job? I tried the 76 out yesterday and really like it so im buying one tomorrow but why two different paint jobs?
@@EHX Thanks, 4 years later. It has been on my board ever since. I just got a Mark V 90w head and was only using the crayon in ch1 but played around last night and found a good medium to boost ch3 that is pedal to METAL heavy. Its not a huge difference but gives it just the right amount of oomph. Have to control it or get a rowdy feedback.
I like the way the crayon boosts a thin sounding pick up.gives it some Bass and nice mids boost. Reminds of the clean crunch on "My bloody valentine" songs. That "only shallow"kinda vibe before the Big muff kicks in. Cool pedal for sure.
Not really a pedal guy, but I'm definitely thinking of getting an overdrive. Either this, the Soul Food, or the classic Tube Screamer are the ones I'm leaning towards. There's much I need to learn, effects-wise. But honestly, whatever I do, I wanna keep it simple. I could definitely see my mind obsessing over a bunch of different pedals and stacking them and going down this endless rabbit hole of different settings and toys, and I strongly want to avoid that. I definitely think of myself more as a songwriter than, like, trying to be the next Jimmy Page, guitar-wise. The song is what matters to me, but, yeah, I want the performance of it to sound good, of course. Right now it's just me and a singer, but I'm gonna add some people and it would be cool to do some actual guitar PARTS when I have a rhythm section. Basically now I just keep the rhythm, strumming while my singer sings. Anyway, here's my idea, tell me if it's dumb or not. I'm thinking, have the Crayon or something similar as my "always on" pedal, and then another OD, like a Screamer or whatever, that I kind of use as a boost when I do lead lines. Whaddya think? This is all just theory now, as I don't even own any pedals. But I think that should work. Once I find a tone I dig, I don't see myself fucking with it too much. I have one or two arrangement ideas where a really distorted, grainy, open-chord kind of thing needs to kick in at a couple points, but that's the exception. Mostly I just picture a slightly gain-y tone, but bright too, if that makes sense, and then a sort of brighter, cleaner tone kicking in for solos, sort of like when Noel Gallagher would solo on the first couple Oasis albums. I don't know. This is all still in my head. But I'd appreciate your or anyone's thoughts.
Ok....just got my Crayon...love the boost settings. But, I discovered that if you go past noon on the gain control, it has no effect what so ever. Is this normal? If you adjust the gain from 12:00 all the way to max there is no audible difference.
+Guitar Anthony I actually contacted EHX, and was told; no difference in the pedals other than the graphics...and i just realized your comment was from 5 months ago, so im assuming you figured that out by now lol
I know I'm a little late to the party, but it's a pretty versatile little OD pedal, I could imagine running two of these and a standard drive for 3 different distortion sounds, and the different graphics would obviously keep them from getting your bass drive confused with your treble drive. I know such a thing is a little overkill, but I can still see people doing it.
it seems that i keep buying these. i have od to od to od and they stack nicely. ehx is a great mfg of sound. they all give different sounds but still work in sequence. i'm still trying to figure out my favorite or combo.
I know this is dumb, but I bought this pedal without knowing what it sounded like because of the artwork lol (and the fact I could get one used for just $50)
I must admit, it's got a very beefy, midrangey tone. It sounds a lot fatter than most overdrive pedals. I live the heaviness, but adding that little bit of midrange makes all the difference in the world. Take out those frequencies, and the tone turns to shit. I have to ask -- in this video, was the Crayon boosting an already overdriven amp, or was all the dirty tone coming from the pedal?
Between this and the Soul Food pedal, which is better suited for a nice clean crunch sound? Building up my pedal and already have a EHX 720 looper on the pedal. Looking to add to the number!
i vowed to only fill my modest sized pedal board but when ehx comes out with great products, its really damn hard to do. looking at a germanium 4 muff. already got a hot tubes and a tone wick big muff. what to do!!!
This is going to sound like a dumb question but I can only find this on GAK and I can't work out how to select which design of the pedal I'd like........
@@EHX just wondering I think it's crazy that there's two crayons that came out around roughly the same time. I am definitely interested in electro-harmonix crayon the more affordable option.

Bought one a month ago, absolutely love it. I would definitely recommend it for any genre of music.

I particularly like the way this pedal sounds with the LP.
Just got one of these today for my bass, it works for that too and I love it
I've had mine for over a year now and it's done great justice to my tone. Good work guys, keep it up!!
Got this pedal today, and I love it! Brings such colour to my other pedals. Such a great device for the price.

I'm thinking Crayon into Bigmuff would so sweet.🤔
one of the best overdrive pedal ive had
John must be on a Deep Purple kick! I almost ordered the pedal as soon as he started the "No, No, No" intro.
Sounds amazing with the lespaul on the neck pickup with the treble booster thing
Love using this as an always on at the beginning of my chain. The high pass frequency does wonders.
I really enjoyed the Big Muff now I gotta get this
I really like EHX and their pedals are the best.
Man I love the Glove with the Crayon...
I love that old dude

Best $62 I have ever spent. This thing is tasty thru a Strat, I haven't made it to my other guitars yet. I'm in blues heaven at the moment.

Another nice OD by EHX. I like it as much as the Soul food and the East River Drive which both sound great.
Cool graphics, cool sound!!! :)
Crayon + glove is a good combo
Do both Crayon pedals sound the same? One crayon pedal looks different than the other. Do they both still sound the same?
They are the same
LOVE EHX!
Its an icon great revue
Does it come with those EHX-branded crayons and a little coloring book? That would be an amazing touch.

Seems like a Soul Food replacement to me! Guess I'm off to buy ANOTHER EHX pedal!!!! Damn you guys!!!
It's a good pedal, but it's not a Soul Food replacement. They are two completely different circuits with very different sounds and uses.
