You probably need to differentiate between Armor and Shield, like the Thracian Nobles actually have good Armor but no Shield. I think this is for multiplayer purpose, but Archers are usually good against some non-peltast javelin units due to low armor and shield, and Slingers have more ammo but slower dps for their missiles.
sir on thing i notice in RTW2 i played alot singleplayer and the thing is all spear units are very very weak aganist {Royal paltse}in melee combat and other swords units like {evocite} of rome and {Royal gaulatans gurad} make sure to check them and sorry for spelling mistake
There is another option to countering the shock cav. Shield wall/Hoplite wall or any other defensive ability to brace the unit. They'll bounce right off.
ye i never really bring them bc i think they are meant to stay in combat with inf, but that never really good for cav. (I think they have bonus vs inf not sure tho)
Concerning the counters for skirmish-archer cavalry, I think Thureos Spears and especially Pergamon's Agema Spears alongside enough slingers or archers do their best. I used to be quite afraid of fighting against Nomads/Parthia, but they're possible to counter if you play your cards properly. I've acquired lately a great respect for skirmish cavalry; I used to think that units such as Tarantine cav were worthless, but playing lately as Syracuse I recruited some Thracian and Scythian cavalry to counter Massagetae and Khorasmii armies, and they worked marvelously. With good micro they can obliterate many units, although you must pay a lot of attention, given that the skirmish mode doesn't work properly and slower units can catch them. In addition to this, I think a great combo is a heavy spears core + long range missiles + skirmish cav to either counter or at least harass enemies' superior cav and infantry. Yeah, I think Ardiaei are actually good. I'm eager to start a campaign as them as soon as I finish my current one.
True! you should not rely on scirmish mode it never workes properly. I love ardiaei in multiplayer not sure how they are in campaign but sounds interesting!
Well here is my statement as a tournament player for landbattles for some of your tactics mentioned: - Tarantine missle cav is one of the strongest in the game because: They have 60 amor and wont die fast They have mele stats and will win against sheep horsearchers They have the same amount of pila then peltast and the same armour as them Tarantine are (used correctly) a counter against every horsearcher Unit and u can use them in mid game to get into the enemy archers -> Tarantines will win In late game u can actually charge with them into the rear of the enemy line if they have thrown all their pila. U should not use tarantines as a skirmish cav for its own but as a citizencav combined with a peltast unit. Secondly countering skirmish cav can be done in different ways: - In landbattle tournaments u see often very long lines with agil armies. The skirmish cav wont get the option to flank around cause the army is extended so long. In a normal average match u can counter them if u keep your vonurable targets in the middle of the army and send light inf or spearman on them to throw a pila volley (one good volley and half of the horse archer unit is gone). - The other ways are outrangingthem with slingers or archers and using your own Skirmish cav (mostly Thurso spears wont work, because the the skirmish cav just outranges them -> difference to lightinf: most players underestimate their speed and volleyrange) - Little tip: if the enemy is so confident to go with multiple horsearchers behind your army just cut them of with your normal cav. Most players wont react fast enough but with a good Mikro u can do it - Here again why the Tarantine are deadly af against bow skirmish cav: if u getting close to them and u can’t still catch up, but your pila volley will actually hit the back of the light horsearchers wherever they are shooting into your front (shielded side) of the Tarantines. Ardiae is played in pro tournaments, they aren’t bad and can be really strong. U bring (depending on the money normally 11.7k) 5 noble hoplites with them and a lot of pila throwing spearman. They’re strength is the armour and the pila capability. Because of there armour and there only ability to bring Tarantines as a good cav makes them predictable and nonagile in a battle. They will lose in multiplayer against heavylie swordbased factions with decent armour The combo u mentioned is one of the types u see often in average multiplayergames, in landbattle tournaments u wont find a lot of these lineups due to their lack of agility and the current meta is very much different to playing heavy Infanterie base
@@jacobrickert2417 Concerning Ardiaei, ikr, they would be trashed by a good balanced swords army, I am simply talking about the kind of army I am going to set when I start my personal campaign. It'd work better for open field battles though, I must also think about a setup for walled city assaults. Wouldn't that setup work also for Sparta (heavy hoplites + tons of missiles support+ skirmish cav for mobility). I'm pretty sure that Thureos have the same range as skirmish cavalry and peltats (80), that's why even though their melee skill sucks I consider them one of the most crutial units of the game. If you refer to Horse archers, it's true that they outrange the Thureos (125), so the only way would be either 150 range units or try to mesa with enemies' micro and catch them, obliterate them with Tarantines as you said. Thureos can obliterate the naive cavalries which make the mistake to accept a missile exchange given that they fire faster , have more men per unit , shield value. That's how I usually defeat Eastern armies playing as an Hellenic, some kind of hedgehog which fires from everywhere and can deal with enemies' melee units. If you have seen a Swiss or Spanish square formation from the XVI century, it's something similar.
ive been a medieval 2 player for years, and like all m2tw players i love heavy cavalry. theres no thinking involved, not even any flanking really, just charge them straight into infantry masses and watch the bodies fly. i also thought very little of skirmishers. i almost never recruited ranged, except for english longbows, i felt like crossbows were slow unwieldy and useless. yet i always heard that they were valuable for players online? rome 2 DEI has made me prefer skirmisher cav. there's nothing like facing unbreakable hoplite/pike units with heavy armor that can take on 4 of your units at once and not break...and then bringing up fast horses behind them to annihilate them with javelins. i suppose its the classical warfare of heavy infantry focus that really makes you appreciate skirmishers. m2tw is just heavy cavalry charges
it would had been good if you also talked about how to counter units that are really great and will be seen alot in multy matches. like : Othsworns, Sword followers, Thorax swordsmen, And Princebes, desert legionerys.
bro thanks! easy tutorial to understand, straight to the point, each unit is a chapter for easy finding, and gives bonus strats if you cant directly deal with the ennemy.
Im playing as egypt, and my main army build is wild... 2 giant greek ballista for more range 3 regular greek ballista for extra stoning. 9 units of war elephants in front of my siege engines 3 camel spearmen for chasing value 2 scythed chariots to mincemeat any infantry And my general is a royal peltast, the only missile unit i have. I keep him near the siege engines for support. The magic happens pretty fast as my ballista drop hell from heaven early on, usually decimating nearly half of any force, and anyone who manages to make it past the rock drops are immediately faced with a buttload of elephants. I keep the flanks secure with my camels and chase any running infantry with my chariots. Its worked wonders for me. This is all campaign play, so theres that to consider.
I use Parthia or Massagetae when Sparta, Syracuse, Macedon, or Athens get berserk with their Tankiest Hoplite units since the Horse Archers have the best missile damages, and then charge with your Royal Cataphracts once you see their lines and density falling apart.
Best count to melee and shock cav are the pikemen or the spear men, melee vs melee no problem just throw in a cheap spear unit, enemy has good shock cav just brace and waite for them to charge then spear or pikes will do there work, its all in your army unit composition always have a army that can adapt to any situation at the givin moment
No javelin spears are actually terrible against heavy Calvary since you could literally cycle in and out unmolested and kill them with impact damage alone.
Pike wall is really that good, only weakness is ranged attack. Heavy pikes are pain to kill from the front, just don't bother. Bring plenty ranged or you have to be able to surprise them from behind. Luckily they don't move that fast in formation so you can largely ignore them until you deal with other units first. Then you can come back and deal with them last. Or you would need our own pike.
Heavyspearman are so tanky for pila in every regular landbattle … u will lose time and amo on then and these heavy spearman will still get a lot of kills. Best way to counter them is by not engaging them frontally with mid tier units, but from sides or their back … or to fall back cause they get tired pretty fast. The second option is countering them with elite swords. But i strongly disagree with the missle fire. Second thing: It always depends on the map, the unitraster and the faction how to counter a special unit type. U missed out Countering peltast and also countering artillery. Peltast can be countered in general by light or mid Infanterie if used correctly or strong cav, but attention Peltast have armour and decent melee stats plus 7-10 pila Volleys All in all nice video :)
Heavy spears are understimated. I actually have an strategy which takes advantage of this that you say: given that they've a really good armour, I have them as front line and let them engage first (also for preventing a shock cavalry rush). They can afford the pila and shock damage. If you have better melee but more fragile units, you can do a cyclo charge. For instance, let's say that playing as Carthage you put Carthagian Hoplites or Sacred Band first , let them take the first damage, and quickly retire them (after their own shock bonus has faded) whilst you get into melee your Noble Fighters, Lybian Infantry...I tend to do this as Carthage and Colchis (Kartli Axemen second line, Colchian Nobles first line) and it works great for me.
why do you forget the most broken unit (the nomidian noble cavarly) they are the most melee attack unit in the game and bonus charge and pella almost everything
Hi there, playing mostly single player with the DEI mod (obviously), and I have a fetish for the greek cultures, and like to bring a lot of pikeman, but I have found out that while they a lot of power against other infantry and cavalry (as long as they come from the front), they are extremely week against missiles, especially javalins, how do I properly counter them? I talking mainly about the romans, with their awesome pilla, even if I win in the end, they still had snipped some of my men before the end of battle, and in DEI any loss is extremely painful, especially in foreign territory
Place Holpites or other Tanky infanterie inside the pikemen, they tank the missiles and do the melee combat for the pikeman too and they are not so vulnebare for flank attacks anymore. Place them one unit line before the pikeman and they denfend them for the enemys who come through the phalanx and the pikemen still attack them from a safe distance. almost unbeatable. i take most of the time hoplites because they are really tanky and can if the flanks get attacked, kill horsemen etc. and if its sword or other hoplites u have the pikemen. i have in my army my general(Pikemen) 6xPikemen 6x Holpites, 6 Bowmen or stonethrower and 1x heavy meleecav to kill ballist etc or distract other bowmen to give time for my bowmen if they are weeker. with my bowmen and ca i go always go at first at the enemy bowmen etc and my pikemen and hoplites wait in each other (pikemen in phalanx, hoplites not) and protexct my bowmen and wait for the enemy. Now u have enough bowmen to kill the enemy bowmen and after that support ur pikemen and hoplites. very good army, in town defence almost every time win. in town defence, place ur pikemen like a V at the entrance and s tairs where they come and hoplites on the wall that they have to stay or have to go to ur prepared stairs and let ur bowmen shot the enemy on the wall from the ground. if theere are too many enemys that they are pushing ur pikemen back, place another unit of Holpites or pikemen (whatever u can or have left) on the prepared entrance in ur V and click mouse right every 3 second with ur pikemen in phalanx, now they push back an should erase the enemy. Have fun :)
I sometimes fight against a very difficult NPC in custom battle: I'm Sparta, they are Pontos and I struggle so much to defeat them. I gave them Pikes (a lot), two citizen cav so I have to bring at least two tarantien cav as a counter, four eastern bowmen, two of those very cheap axemen and an additional unit of spears. I don't win without sometimes pausing the game for micro management, if I take pikes, they get shot, I cannot win the missile fight so I tried it with maaany thureus spears but that wasn't easy either. While his pikes stay in line my non pikes of course break. The AI moves it's army to it's right side, so I can't get good positioning for the non shield side. In my next round I want to go for two spartan youths as meat wall and than like a acies duplex of Thureus spears with the first unit in square formation looking slightly to the right so it will hopefully will shoot more into non shield sides while due to the square I don't show my back/shield side to the enemy.
then also put a max limit on pikes since it is pretty cringe and annoying to play against pike spam, traditionally it's a max of 4 missile units, 2 pikes and 1 or 0 artillery pieces in server browser mp games
In campaign shock cav can be really powerfull, but the bactrian noble horse mele cav is on of the best mele caf so if you can try to go for a combo, but if you cant you can go save and bring the mele cav
Elephants absolutely destroy cavalry. It's not a proper counter since elephants are slower and don't want to be exposed on flanks much but when they meet, the elephants are just invincible.
Surely the best way to deal with missile troops like archers and slingers is a cavalry charge? Yet you didn't even mention using cavalry against them?! And can't Horse Archers be killed by standard Cav if you manage to corner them? It works in Rome 1.
Can you plz start making videos about Divide Et Impera units, factions and battles of course. That would be amazing if you do! DEI is after all more realistic, so cool units, different factions and battles..
Yes thats in case you're playing against a human player, but ai doesnt abide these rules, there are no constants with ai, for example a normal unit of slingers can beat your light cavalry unit

I just started w RTW2. How do you make units just throw PILA, and not crash into the other force? I'm losing all the time, even in the training battles.
u press halt and then they will through pila faster. Loosing is a part of the learning process, but i got a video coming out soon that will help u a lot im sure

@@FightMeTotalWar phalanx spearmen in DEI seems unbeatable in frontal assaults (even for veteran legionaries or Iberian and celtic Roman auxiliaries). The only counter appears to be peppering them with a shower of pila and javelins.
spear units are considered weak in the game yet the most powerful infantry in the game is actually a spear units aka royal spartan. Quite ironic if you ask me :)
@@FightMeTotalWar I tested it multiple times when oath sworn fighting royal Spartans, and oath sworn lost almost every single time but close. As long as you charge and put Royal spartan in phalanx immediately with attack formation off, they will win 90% of the time. If you manage to disrupt oath sworn's charge, the Spartans will always win the fight.
also you can stop chariots and elephants with very heavy cavalry. if a chariot is charging cav that is braced, just dont move, the chariot loses the combat
one time i made a war ageinst only Thracian missle units (+ missle Cavalry), and i dont know how i have do win the battle with a mixed army ( Sparta: 4 missle, 4 Cavalry, 3 Pikes, rest Hoplits), whats the best tactic with a normal army (not used a better missle army)?
Shotels have 75 armor which is really low for a basically 900 cost unit, they got low health (55) so that means you got to focus them down with archers and pila!
Armoreds shotels dont really have a weakness, but they got low meledefence so a couple celtics cycle charges/ falxes or just a few sheat strong low tiers will be a decent counter
You guys underestimate pikeman.. I can't count how many time I lose when they are 4 pikeman charging my frontline.. You can't do much when frontline is crumbling
Dogs with pretty much everything haha, dogs can only kill (light) archers and low tier units and vs artillery you have to hide ur units behind buildings and avoid blobbing up, in land battles they are always banned
Your presentation is incredible. You are very talented on this regard. However, Rome 2 is just an awful game. This video is just showing that armies in the game are worth little more than the sum of their parts. No opportunity for flanking with cavalry. Pikes are broken and it’s just an army building game, no tactics because they have little impact on the game. It’s almost entirely due to the ridiculous health point system. You may as well autoresolve every battle. Shogun 2, Med 2 and Rome 1 which actually let you use tactics and strategy with it being possible to have a heroic victory with an inferior force are infinitely better and have plenty of things to cover. I’d love to see you cover some of these incredible games.
What do you think of the video?
Let me know what other units/ unit types you would like to get tips from how to counter them!

Now u have enough bowmen to kill the enemy bowmen and after that support ur pikemen and hoplites.
very good army, in town defence almost every time win.
in town defence, place ur pikemen like a V at the entrance and s
tairs where they come and hoplites on the wall that they have to stay or have to go to ur prepared stairs and let ur bowmen shot the enemy on the wall from the ground.
if theere are too many enemys that they are pushing ur pikemen back, place another unit of Holpites or pikemen (whatever u can or have left) on the prepared entrance in ur V and click mouse right every 3 second with ur pikemen in phalanx, now they push back an should erase the enemy.
Long overdue video for the whole community
❤
need more counters to pikes one of my buddy just spammes them and we dont allow art so its like darn
then also put a max limit on pikes since it is pretty cringe and annoying to play against pike spam, traditionally it's a max of 4 missile units, 2 pikes and 1 or 0 artillery pieces in server browser mp games
Wow such quality great vid man keep it up
Appreciate it man!❤
@@FightMeTotalWar hay quick question. Should I use shock cav or meme cab ? In campaign hard difficulty. Playing as Bactria
In campaign shock cav can be really powerfull, but the bactrian noble horse mele cav is on of the best mele caf so if you can try to go for a combo, but if you cant you can go save and bring the mele cav
Nice video. Lots of info Concise and no bs.
Glad it was helpful!
So, throwing pila it is
Yes sir
Well done and thanks!
No problem 👍
Really good video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Can you plz start making videos about Divide Et Impera units, factions and battles of course. That would be amazing if you do! DEI is after all more realistic, so cool units, different factions and battles..
Dont know much about DeI
@@FightMeTotalWar Just get it, start playing, you will LOVE it I promise! Give it a try..
Damn why didn't you mention the levy freemen, they are the most op unit in the game smh
hahah yeah they are a nice unit, but not difficult to counter 😂
I swear this guy can pronounce only 12 letters from the alphabet
You forgot about the artillery units 💀😝
Use cavalry or artillery, Any attack on artillery crew will result in your win against them
@@syedafzaalalishah3835 that is if it's an AI? Although AI cheats and rains rather accurate artillery on you.
I saw you briefly mention the chariots but that was it, can you please re iterate?
good video, quality is great and its good that ur listening to the advice of making longer videos.
from jbarbs :)
Thanks Jbarbz! im indeed trying to make some longer vids!
Yes thats in case you're playing against a human player, but ai doesnt abide these rules, there are no constants with ai, for example a normal unit of slingers can beat your light cavalry unit
How do I counter Germanic club levy ? Are they just like sword units or is there a strategy against them
will have a video coming this sunday als about that!
@@FightMeTotalWar oh thank you :D
Thanks man, really helped in my multiplayer game!
Glad to hear that!👍

whats about the obsession with armenia? haha
no love for Getae Falxmen?
my favorite tactic is to create a square with heavy spears or armored spears.. let the enemy surround ur spears..
than charge with 4 or 5 Falxmen units... from their back.. they have no defense or armor.. but caught by surprise and they have one of the highest DPS in the game
i won large battles in minutes doing this tactic
Nice tactic indeed
What about Dogs? What is the best counter?
What is the best fighting with formation attack on/off, if depends on the situation, what situations is realible turning it on and when don't?
Should Should never be in formation attack
you forget skirmish cavalery like fracian, tylean, numidean, galatian, etc
agema spears are some of the coolest in game
I love how half of this is just "use ranged weapons".
Truly, firepower wins against everything.
very usefull video thanks man
Glad it helped
such a good video, thanks
Thanks man np!
Great video!
Thanks!
Goodjob 👏👏👍
Shiii that was intense!
Haha yeah sometimes people put it at 0.75 speed hahaha (dont wanna waste time!)
Can you make a video for attila?
Maybe in the Future yeah! but not as much experience with Atilla Compared to rome 2
I just started w RTW2. How do you make units just throw PILA, and not crash into the other force? I'm losing all the time, even in the training battles.
u press halt and then they will through pila faster. Loosing is a part of the learning process, but i got a video coming out soon that will help u a lot im sure
good video belive you miss Berserker and sword + axe + arty
Thanks Silent! Yeah true about the berserker, for the swords and axes its more fight that you will have to get a stronger sword/axe unit vs ur enemy, do you agree?
Pikemen are the best unit in the game if you know how to use them
Good video Willem (y)
Thanks Multiplayer!
500 hours in this game and I still feel a noob, because I am, I need to spend more time playing and learning.
One question, how can i use javaliners?
What mod are u using
i think you should talk a bit more how to counter Pretorian/ Pretorian Guard. They just dont fk die and that so frustrating .
haha yeah they are strong! but oathsworn can beat them
@@FightMeTotalWar hi, love your vids! Any tips on how to beat praetorians as seleucids, they absolutely wreck my armed, armored and experienced silvershield swordsmen, and hoplites dont hold them for long, thanks!
Are there some differences in DEI? Maybe the machanics are exactly the same but I would like to know
Yeah there are def some changes in DEI, mechanic wise, but it was a while ago since i played it so dont really know all the differences
@@FightMeTotalWar phalanx spearmen in DEI seems unbeatable in frontal assaults (even for veteran legionaries or Iberian and celtic Roman auxiliaries). The only counter appears to be peppering them with a shower of pila and javelins.
oh yeah i remember that yeah, they are nearly like pikes haha. so the same counter for them i guess?
spear units are considered weak in the game yet the most powerful infantry in the game is actually a spear units aka royal spartan. Quite ironic if you ask me :)
ye true haha
dont forget the oathsworn and galatian royal guard
@@FightMeTotalWar I tested it multiple times when oath sworn fighting royal Spartans, and oath sworn lost almost every single time but close. As long as you charge and put Royal spartan in phalanx immediately with attack formation off, they will win 90% of the time. If you manage to disrupt oath sworn's charge, the Spartans will always win the fight.
ye the only thing is that oathsworn got abilities and if you second wind them etc is a stonger unit, but ye im also reallt fan of the royals!
You could use archers on flanks against spears and pikes 🤨

What about dogs, how do you counter them?
Infantry
also you can stop chariots and elephants with very heavy cavalry. if a chariot is charging cav that is braced, just dont move, the chariot loses the combat
Oh oke thanks for the Tip!
Are you sure? I don't think cavalry gets bonus for staying braced, but for charging themselves.
yeah I thought that too
@@FightMeTotalWar somehow the chariot cannot go through the formed up cav. I don't know how but it is what it is. I tried it myself
Alright i will test is soon! im curious now haha
Best way to counter camel cataphracts?
I explained in my latest vid
I am a master in the land battles but my problem is siege and sea battles
siege are a lot of fun and sea you just need to RAM!
Shock Cav also gets a bonus v large
Yeah true but they are worse in combat they have nearly no melee defense bc they got no shield
@@FightMeTotalWar yes, but on the charge they obliterate melee cav. Keeping them in prelonged melee is a mistake in the usage of shock cav
yeah true!
How Do I Counter Long sword Cohorts?
one time i made a war ageinst only Thracian missle units (+ missle Cavalry), and i dont know how i have do win the battle with a mixed army ( Sparta: 4 missle, 4 Cavalry, 3 Pikes, rest Hoplits), whats the best tactic with a normal army (not used a better missle army)?
Wait so if there are only missle units you can run them down with your 4 cav right?
Subbed. Good content. Very smart !!
Much appreciated!🍻
Interesting!
❤
I hate missile cavalry so much. Specially in open field. How can I beat them?
I said how to in the video hahah
But ye i also hate to face them
How to counter shotel/armored shotel warriors
Shotels have 75 armor which is really low for a basically 900 cost unit, they got low health (55) so that means you got to focus them down with archers and pila!
Armoreds shotels dont really have a weakness, but they got low meledefence so a couple celtics cycle charges/ falxes or just a few sheat strong low tiers will be a decent counter
You guys underestimate pikeman..
I can't count how many time I lose when they are 4 pikeman charging my frontline..
You can't do much when frontline is crumbling
how to counter swords?
With swords😂
How Do I Counter Artillery and dogs
Dogs with pretty much everything haha, dogs can only kill (light) archers and low tier units and vs artillery you have to hide ur units behind buildings and avoid blobbing up, in land battles they are always banned
Ok thanks
how to conunter dogs!?
dont iberian infantry have 5 rounds of javvies too?
Yes they do! and you can target the pila with them so yeah indeed basically a thureos spear
if same price melee and shock cav charge into each other shock cav wins
I’m pretty sure that mele wins bc of melee def
But I could be wrong! It depends on the unit I think
Could be, but I think that charge damage is so big that it decimates half of the unit needs to be tested

Stats boiii
yeah haha i showed a lot of stats to take in
Your presentation is incredible. You are very talented on this regard. However,
Rome 2 is just an awful game.
Something is op? Counter it with velites....Okay, I'll play Velites only next time
