    This doesn’t seem like a real world review because usually you would have multiple clips. So can we really tell if the M1 can handle it? No is going to put one clip on when editing a video.

    • @SamWhiteFilms
      @SamWhiteFilms 3 роки тому +8

      I agree. Also the screen is 13 inches so unless you use an external monitor, it isn’t the most efficient at all for editing. I have one and barely use it.

      Yes, it is a real world test. If the software can’t even handle one 8K clip, it can’t handle more than one. However, it would be nice to see how many additional 8K clips the M1 could handle reasonably.

    Surprised you made no mention that the A1's 8k is 420 10-bit while Canon's 8k is 422 10-bit. I would think that 420 would be easier to edit than 422. With that said, most people (inc. myself) really don't need/care if it's 420 as long as it is 10-bit. I wish Canon gave the option to shoot 420 H.265 as Sony does it would probably be easier to edit. Thanks for the test Max.

    7:30 And that’s why I’ve moved away from that garbage some call Adobe Premiere and switched to Final Cut (and now occasionally Resolve). I don’t know how they’re still in business when this is the quality and performance of their software. Frankly at this point it’s beyond embarrassing, Adobe’s CEO should’ve fired all of their useless programmers and resigned like 2 times by now.

    You edit 8k, encode it, post on UA-cam, and wait for people to watch it: Only two people (Sony CEO and Bill Gates) are watching with 8k monitor. The rest of us still limit our smartphone streaming to 480p/720p resolution so we don't get overcharged on our internet monthly bill. How ironic.

    • @jordanwright5795
      @jordanwright5795 3 роки тому +9

      No one really shoots 8k as a delivery format for anyone to watch ( Bill Gates or otherwise ) outside of some special use cases in Asia / Olympics etc.
      8k ( RED, Canon R5, Sony A1) and 12k ( Blackmagic URSA 12k ) are typically used as an acquisition format for post production reframing, stabilization or as background plates for VFX work. 8k downsampled to 4k also reduces image artifacts, noise, moire and generally looks really crispy and nice just like 4k downsampled to HD looks really good as well.

      8K TV. I've uploaded one 8K Video and it is indeed a pain in the rear. I don't own an 8K TV yet. But from doing lots of research, I see the professionals do say you would need around a 75 inch or larger TV and be within 6 feet of it to notice a difference between 4K and 8K. So, it's not really practical.

Timeline - 40 min, without rendering on both machine. Source - Panasonic GH5S, 4k 25p, 8 bit. With “share” function from Final Cut on both machines, I exported that timeline like “Master file” and the export time for Mac Mini M1 was 15 min and 26 sec; for the Imac was 21 min! In that timeline, I had texts, adjustment layers, stabilization and color correction on each clip and above all another adjustment layer with a LUT applied. And in the middle on the export, the timeline was smooth, and I was able to make changes without any problems! About 8k, you might be right...

    Since when has “playback” been the same as editing. Sorry I really appreciate the work you guys put into these videos but I’d prefer to see what scrubbing looks like, 2x 4x playback and better yet a real timeline with an actual edit on it. Playback is just one small factor when it comes to editing. All the best 👍🏻 ps you should consider making a video about proxy work flows! People mention it all the time but very few have explained it well. A good proxy workflow especially with cameras like this, with built in proxies are a dream to work with, on almost any system!

      I edit 2h projects with multiple nodes in 4k timeline. It cant do 4k full res with over 10 nodes but less than that it will. I use 4k half res. I can also edit 4-6h straight without charging and the perfomance is the same plugged in or not. BEAST of a machine.

    Max, a couple of things I want to mention, but before that, thanks for the awesome video! First, on my personal experience with the R5, when I film 8K Raw and edit on premiere with 1/16 quality (low I know), I've honestly had a pretty smooth experience both editing and color grading with no dropped frames. I have an AMD Ryzen 9 3900X 12 Core processor at 3.79Ghz, with 64GB of Ram and an Nvidia GTX 970 for reference. Second, I have a question regarding your M1Mac. Have you encountered the SSD Wear problem that is affecting the M1 MacBook Pro? They say that the processor will wear out the SSD's pretty quickly, causing them to reach end of life a lot sooner than they should. Some users are reporting over 100TB's of usage in just a couple of months! Just wondering your opinion.

      4.2.2 is the problem. Not 8 bit, 10 bit, 12 bit. Look at the specs of CPUs and GPUs. The only thing that is supposed to have built decoders is the 11th Gen Intel, and for now you need the latest version of Davinci Resolve Studio and an 11th Gen Intel CPU. I had a hard time deciding between an AMD 5900HX laptop or Intel 11980HK laptop. Davinci supporting the 11th Gen Intel CPU for all codecs made me order a laptop with Intel 11980HK.

    but the only crazy thing is that the cpu does not comes in handy for the playback.. it's a softeware problems.. as it uses only graphic card basically and not even at its maximum... the software problem is huge.. as it does not take advantage fully of the hardware.. and this is crazy in 2021.. but yes we cannot do anything about it..

    Premiere is unusable not from yesterday. To use the Lumetri you have to add them in separate layer on top and that is just one of the many weird bugs in this software. Adobe is trying to push its customers to Resolve and it is working.

    Hi Max, it appears that Apple silicon Macs do not seem to be able to handle noise reduction in applications such as Resolve Studio. Nobody talks about it so before I go ahead and switch from PC to Mac, this is one of the answers I am looking for. I shoot video using various cameras such as the Canon R6, DJI Osmo Pocket, Panasonic Lumix and in some circumstances I need to be able to denoise in processing. The M1 seems to have an edge in decoding HEVC 10 bit 4:2:2 in hardware for now, but the Intel 11th gen IGP through Quicksync seems to be the first device on the PC able to match the M1 T2 embedded chip. Blackmagic just announced support in Resolve 17.1 for Intel hardware based HEVC 10 bit 4:2:2 decoding. We'll have to wait for the end of March when Intel chips get officially released and embargos lifted. Until then I would appreciate it if you and Vadim could touch on how the M1 handles denoising with such a weak GPU. Tahnks for all the great videos and test results on the M1 Mac mini!

    Waiting on the Desktops first of all. Secondly, I'm not trying to be disrespectful here, but why is everyone surprised that the best way to deal with A1 and the R5 footage is through Proxies. The second 8K was announced I just assumed there would need to be proxies. I don't know if I would trust the integrity of a bitrate low enough to do it without. Just sayin.

    Just saw your video on the Mac Pro. Apple's really turned me off their products. What they continue to do with the Mac Pro line shows greed and not a positive customer experience. I've been turned off since 2016 with the new macbooks with everything soldered. I ended up buying an iMac Pro for about $3600, and just recently sold it for $3000 waiting to see what happens with the new MacPro or MacBook Pro. I like FCPX, but I don't like their attitude. Tim seems more focused on money and logistics that providing a superior customer experience. I'm happy to wait and see. Like you, I have a channel and produce a lot of content. I need speed and reliability, but I also need to be able to upgrade. Until there is a management change, Apple will continue to focus on their bottom line and care little about us Pros. They are truly a consumer company. As a pro user, I should want the Mac Pro... I won't even look at it unless it starts at or below $3000.
