Same here! Watching the smiles on their faces is epic to me. Watching them realize the meaning of what they've heard us say all of their lives - you don't know what music and talent is.
They see this and it dawns on them their music ain't music. The music today is a computer. Ppl on our day were talented beyond belief! We had God tier greats! Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Ozzy, Eddie Van Halen and SO. MANY. MORE.
OUR GENERATION WAS BLESSED WITH THE BEST MUSIC AND COMEDY EVER!!!!

Look I grew up in the 70's & 80's jamming to this so I'm a huge fan.Eddie had a huge drinking problem with a coke addiction to go with it. That's documented and undeniable, but everyone is certainly not perfect and me included. But I did kill speakers and batteries to Van Halen and their contemporaries.

One of the guys said something about the value of the guitar. I’m not sure if it’s that one specifically, but, he built what is known as the “Frankenstrat”. He does have some or maybe one that looks similar from a distance. But, the Frankenstrat is the only one that exists. I’ve wondered what it would fetch at auction. No one will ever know. Thankfully, his son and brother have all that stuff and would never let it go.

I’m 55 now but saw tons of live shows throughout the 80’s. Saw Van Halen three times and each time Eddie would do some kind of crazy guitar thing halfway through the show. He was a literal guitar god. He and his brother (Alex on drums) were born in the Netherlands and came to US with their parents as young children. English is not their native language (there are videos on YT of Eddie and Alex doing interviews speaking Dutch) so not only were they born musically gifted, they speak English as well as any native. Eddie also played the piano very well and would play it as well as guitar in live shows. Eddies only child, Wolfgang Van Halen inherited his father’s musical gift and plays bass and guitar in his own band. Eddie was one of a kind and his death made the rock world a little less bright. I’m glad I got to see them live before he died. But he never suffered with carpal tunnel. He was playing as much as ever up until his cancer got him too sick to do much of anything.

It's called a swell, you hammer on the note (Use the fingers hitting the strings on the fret board to vibrate the string) and with your picking hand you turn the volume knob up and down in time with your notes. The slower attack(build up of the note) gives it the sound reminiscent of a cello. Eddy was an encyclopedia of variant techniques for playing guitar.

Not true. The solo was engineered by Ted Templeman and when Eddy heard the playback the next day he got pissed and then told Ted to play it back again. The way that 'song' appears on the album is not Eddy. He told Ted "Now I have to learn it." He went on to say that the audience would be missed if he didn't play it just like on the album. That's how his music is, what you heard on the album, CD or digital download, you heard it exactly the same, live in concert

They may have “tapped” but no one was tapping like Ed before he did it. He is the OG of his style. No one played guitar like him until after he did it. Of course he had influences like every guitarist but he reinvented the way people would approach the guitar for generations to come. He “popularized” tapping because he did it like no one else. When eruption came out, no one had heard anything quite like it before. That’s why eruption is considered one of the most influential guitar solos of all time.

5:47 EVH did not invent “finger boarding” (actually called tapping), but he did popularize it in the late 70’s and 80’s and took it to another level.

I have seen Van Halen too many times. Every single time was awesome mesmerizing. It is like kind of like watching Angus Young AC/DC on the guitar. Eddie, you know my guy. What can you say Eddie is the best in the world. He will always be the best. No matter how you slice it still can't get over. He's gone. Still can't stop crying 3 years October 6th 2024 it's coming up. They should do something special. A shout out to everybody, the family. She do something special. Really all his great music. Oh my God still kind of stunned he's gone but he's never going to be forgotten. Never not down here where I live in South Florida. Big 105.9 play us all year Rock. Rest in peace, Eddie

Just imagine, he did those solo's practically every concert Vane Halen did back then. This one is about the only full version on UA-cam of just one of the 100's he did over the years back when they toured. Saw him do this type solo twice a year here in Connecticut, one at the "now gone" Hartford Colosseum and the "now gone" New Haven Colosseum.. Oh the bands that came to town back then!!❤ Wouldn't take back amoment of my early years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ❤

The way I understand it. Michael Jackson only had one guitarist in mind when working on Beat It. When Eddie came in, and heard it. He had ideas that Michael liked, and was happy that eddie was that interested in collaborating with him. The guitar work on Beat It is Classic EDDIE.

Now, that's not normal. That's an hysterical comment while they watch the best rock guitarist ever who reinvented how to play the guitar. I especially love Eddie's fills, putting his guitar where there used to be silence; especially on Sammy's, There's only one way to rock - same 1986 show as this solo, and they opened with that song. And yes, Eddie had hammer pants before hammer!

Small note: Eddie didn't invent finger boarding or 'tapping' as it's generally knowb. It's actually goes way back. BUT he did perfect the technique make it his own and and bring it into rock&roll. He did a lot of very unqieu things with his guitar, like tricking out his volume knob so he could shift the volume up and down at twice the speed, which is how he gets the 'violin' sound.

Great reaction!! I saw Van Halen for the first time when they came to Spokane Washington on their Monsters of Rock tour in 1988, with Kingdom Come, Metallica, Dokken, Scorpions and Van Halen headlining. Eddie’s guitar solo was amazing!!! I can still remember that concert and it was also my first rock concert I went to. They came back to Spokane a few years later and I went with a friend of mine, and Eddie was wasted! He had to sit down during his guitar solo. Still, he is the greatest rock guitarist ever!

The guitar he's playing was originally bought for $50 in 1977 and was dubbed the "Frakenstrat". Its original body was a Fender Stratocaster but evolved by Eddie taking bits and pieces of different guitars and putting them all together in that 1 piece of gear to get what he wanted and evolved over MANY years....Like Frankenstein. Eruption is a solo that leads into "You really got me" on the Van Halen 1 album and is mixed into this performance. He starts with part of "Baluchitherium" a solo from the balance album and uses the intro to the song "Mean Street" from the Fair Warning album. He sprinkles in some just showing off stuff while also keeping parts of the original Eruption in there which is his most popular and covered piece of guitar work hence this being called Eruption.

The looks on your faces? That’s exactly what we looked like 45 yrs ago hearing & seeing this for the first time. I was 15 when I saw VH for the first time in concert. I skipped school (for the first time in my life) to be at the front of the line to get tickets (cause that’s how we did it back then, no internet). I had to take my (younger but bigger) brother with me to the concert, otherwise my mom wouldn’t let me go. Eddie was a force of nature. He was a virtuoso. Music and specifically the guitar, were *part* of him. RIP EVH. 🤟
