I can remember this well. Actually, it was the first night we sang this song. We had been preparing it for an opening and experimenting with it. We did a few other things with it too. But it came off well, I think, because she hadn't really "fallen into place" with this song yet. There was a huge difference between this, and the next number, 'Love Child'! I enjoyed it tho'. Hi Carl. I have to say that this number went over very well regardless and Mary was brave to tackle it knowing she's an alto but it worked. The arrangement worked well and you guys tore it up in the background. Noodleydoo, being a an avid Supreme lover you are so correct regarding Mary's voice and confidence. But regardless of what Berry told her, she kept the harmony strong during the DRATS live shows cause Cindy's soprano was so soft and not as strong as Flo's.
Mary, being a 'staunch' alto, and a SOLID alto, her voice is different nightly really, depending on alot of factors, including the conditions, and 'rest' too! In vegas, it was dryyyyyy, and that got to her by the end of the gig! But....The Lady Fights HARD and YOU go away having ENJOYED yourself regardless! That's ONE thing she KNOWS how to DO!!! ;-p

@Vincent50 Yes after Flo left, Mary was very dominant in backgrounds - which showed she too had a powerful voice. Although Mary could be classed as a Conralto now, at many times she was a decent Mezzo-soprano. If you've heard I'LL SET YOU FREE from the Love Child album, you'll hear what I mean (Mary belts out some top notes in unison with Cindy). So I reckon Mary was a Contralto / Mezzo-soprano but due to age, she is now a strict Contralto.
@pannoni1 Actually, 'WE' forgot! We just didn't think of it. We were trying to remember the 'historical' DIVAS, and forgot some of them TOO! But like I said, 'this' was the first night we introduced the song really, or ONE of the first times. We did 2 shows that night! When the time came, after singing, we had forgotten we were supposed to spurt out names of sorts, and only a 'few' came out! lol.
@MeetTheSupremes Right--which is why she sounded so amazing in the background behind Diana on songs like "Somewhere." Her big, full voice was the perfect anchor for Diana's thinner, higher pop voice. I have to ask: why in the hell would Berry Gordy keep Mary in his number one group if she couldn't sing? Berry may be many things but dumb ain't one of them. Berry told her she couldn't sing to keep her docile, knowing she didn't have Flo or Diana's self-confidence at the time.

@stage7 Mary didn't care about that. But I never saw her jealous! In fact, she is very defensive of EACH of their successes, down the line. It was not jealousy that she exhibited! But SHE WAS a very VIABLE PART of why ALL of them HAD success, and was feelin that she was being underplayed after a while, and she WAS all along! Now, when your COUNTRY chooses YOU REPEATEDLY to represent THEM to the WORLD to 'bridge' relationships intercontinentally, THAT shows YOU have 'IT'! Hands DOWN!

@MeetTheSupremes Agreed. Confidence in your abilities is everything. Listen to Mary on "Sunset" from back in '64--she sounded absolutely stunning, better than DR did on that particular song. Mary also delivered on earlier records like "Pretty Baby" where she could have given Gladys or Martha a run for their money. But by 1967 or so, you could hear the lack of self confidence in her voice. It was like she was afraid to really let it go. Fortunately Mary got it back in the mid 70's,

The second half prob won't be up till tomorrow - it was originally one whole piece but it was 14 minutes long (and after waiting about 5/6 hours for it to save and then upload, UA-cam rejected it because it was over 10 minutes long LOL). Oh well...you live and you learn...you used to be able to get away with uploading long vids but YT has gone back to its b***y ways LOL
Man I don't get why people say Mary can't sing. She may not be Patti Labelle, but she is a very good singer. Mary has a lower voice than Diana Ross so naturally she doesn't sound as good as DR on Supremes songs. Mary has a full, big voice better suited to ballads and background work. She has said that herself. I have seen that girl bring the house down many times, particularly on big ballads like "I Am Changing." Mary is also very entertaining to watch.
@Vincent50 Never saw Mary look or sound so good. She could have had a good career if she hadn't chose to be a hater instead. I loved Mary back in the day, but her behavior of bad vibes toward Diana made her look as bad as she was trying to make Diana look. I will say she looks beautiful here. I like her stage presence here, and her voice sounds great.

But she was 'presented' like and it was 'shrouded' about her to the public that she didn't have 'IT'! Hers was 'different'. But even Diana said 'it' when she left the group about how the presentation was, and you'd not see Mary's as long as 'she' was there because of the way they were 'presented'! TBC...
Maybe it was her health issue a few years back, BUT she looks GREAT!!! The loss of the weight and maybe the debacle of the Supreme's reunion brouhaha,may all have put her in better place to me. Her voice is her voice (much better in my opinion) but she seems so much more confident in her (this) performance! Maybe she now accepts who SHE is and Diana Ross is who she is. Great opening!
