I saw Dame Edna on stage in London whenever she appeared. I remember one show when it was announced at the interval that she wouldn't be able to appear because tragically Norm, her husband, had died. The house lights came on for quite some time, everyone was chatting and laughing. Then it was announced that Dame Edna's car had been spotted and that she couldn't let down her loyal fans. She appeared in a black creation and said she'd been speaking on the phone to her analyst in LA. He had told her that time was a great healer. Even after all these years, phenomenal, absolutely fantastic and entertaining! Can’t believe the almost 500 thumbs down, they have no sense of humor at all!
What I adore most about this interview is that Sharon and Judi are so in sync. They mirror each other's posture, both kick off their shoes and pull their legs up on the chair in the identical manner. It's just a lovely relaxed moment between them all. And Michael has enough common sense to just let Edna go and have run. Sheer brilliance.
@@jamiew1664 Don't be ridiculous. Look at her body language, the relaxed posture, the informal way she draws her feet up and kicks off her shoes... if she was uncomfortable, she'd be sitting upright, shoes on and a frozen smile on her face.
I can't really tell how many times I have watched this. And it's getting more and more hilarious every time I do. Unbelievably funny, witty, cheeky, plain brilliant! Dame forever!
Barry Humphries is most certainly a genius. Have seen dame edna for many years, but this was really brilliant. thanks youtubers and modern technology for making all this stuff available.
This is 15 minutes of turbo charged comedy genius! Even the other distinguished guests are reduced to admiring spectators by this man’s performance. A true entertainer.
Of all the hilarious clips of Dame Edna, this is the Parkinson interview I keep coming back to. I don't know...she's firing on all cylinders here, with the good-natured Parkinson, Dame Judi and (especially) Sharon Osborne as her willing foils. I think Edna's genius--on full display here--is her ability to seamlessly blend the cheerful Dotty Dowager with the knowing, razor-sharp social satirist. Brilliant!
Very few performers can come on and just hit the ground running like this, with a stream of brilliant dialogue. Robin Williams could do it. Billy Connolly could do it. As other people have said in the comments, Barry Humphries (her manager and mentor) is a genius who turned Dame Edna into what she became here. And let's pay tribute and give credit to Parky. Very few interviewers have the skill to feed the few minimal and essential questions to the guest, then stand back to let them do what they do so well. (And I've just realised that Barry Humphries was 70 at the time of this appearance.)
Simple music can make you sing simple hug can make you feel better simple things can make you happy, i hope my simple Hello brings smile to your face,,,
Im approaching 60.. But approaching 60 from the wrong direction... 😁 😂. Its called whites good abuse.. 😁 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 I agree to bring a house down laughing with ouf beings vile racist crude.. Juat funny. Takes talent. French and saunders did the same
I've only watched this about 5 or 6 times. Not nearly often enough, as this is the funniest darned "interview" show I've ever seen in my life. What a great crew!!!
You can see Humphries needing to compose himself before the 'toyed with the priesthood' line so he doesn't crack up whilst delivering it. Such a brilliant, brilliant man.
@@rodnorth1 YES, its all about the nerve of taking that pause, andk now when to release that tension, she is brilliant, and hilariously funny, its a true art :)
One of the true improvisational genius's of comedy. I doubt there's been 1/2 dozen stand-ups in the last 100 years that could sit for 15 minutes and do what Humphries just did. Amazing. I'm glad t's been preserved
Very little of that was improvised; in fact, you can hear many of the same jokes on other chat shows she was on. Parkinson was setting her up for her pre-planned material (some of which Sharon annoyingly stepped on). Doesn't make her any less brilliant.
@@premanadi really? I've never heard Humphries repeat any jokes before. But even if it was a prepared gag he was in a league of his own in the world of humor
@@spactick I agree that he was brilliant, and he did improvise when he is interacting with audiences. But the bulk of what he does is very carefully prepared. Sharon even stepped on a couple of his punchlines, leaving him struggling a little to pick things up again. I watched a slew of his chat show interviews in a row and there was quite a bit of repeat material. It's more of a performance than an interview or conversation as such.
@@premanadi really, it seems so spontaneous. I saw him here 'live' in San Francisco several years ago and he interacted with the audience with people who were definitely not part of his show and it was hysterical. It did not look planned or practiced in any way. But who knows. Thanks for the input
@@spactickYep, that's part of his brilliance, making it all seem off the cuff. I'm sure that when he interacted with a live audience, that part was spontaneous.
I've watched this little interview more than dozen times and every time I laugh so hard I start to cry. Dame Edna... shall live forever. What freedom she is... to be and say what she will. There's still hope in the world. Sincerely.
Barry Humphries is a genius - his performance here as Dame Edna is sublime and the interaction with Parky, Judi and Sharon is perfect. He knows how to 'read' his co-entertainers 'in the moment'. And to think that this interview was only 18 years ago - it would be banned today (as BH is today banned by certain institutions in Australia that bestowed him artistic awards, because he holds 'certain' views). That's how sad cancel culture has become. Comedy is the victim. This footage should be preserved for generations as to how boundaries can be pushed, clever humour is a rare commodity, and we should all be able to laugh at ourselves.
Either we can make fun of everything or we can make fun of nothing at all - this cancel culture just serves the fragile ego of those with no sense of self deprecation or humour… this must be why there’s no decent comedy anymore 😢
@@scramblesish I see what you're saying but I'm also aware of disproportion in the rates of suicide when it comes to marginalised groups. Lack of the lols not being what they used to was does not really come into those figures. Which is probably down to the woke bias of the office of national statistics here in the UK.
I watch this again and again, never tiring of it. Barry Humphries is a true national/international star/treasure - I'm so proud that our country can call him (despite him living in the UK) our own. Please keep making us laugh - especially in current Covid times. Peter
Brilliant. Masters at work. Dame Edna dominated the stage. Dame Judi, a world-class performer herself, graciously allowed Barry to shine during his segment. Sharon was a good sport, too. She was feeding Barry's creativity. Parkinson just gave Dame Edna the freedom to take control. What a great interviewer. I've lost count of the times I've watched this. ❤
@@Roger__Wilco .....Please note, I wrote my comment two years ago. And to add: I was in the second row with a mate of my own at the first show of Edna's in a London theatre fifty years ago (yes, seriously). I dreaded, like anyone else, that she would pick me from the audience. My stomach ached from laughter at this performance of Humphries as a comic genius. Nothing has changed since then. I mourn his death. Robert, UK.
Barry's character of Dame Edna is absolute genius. Only a few comics come along with this kind of talent and timing. Foster Brooks was another one. They are truly rare. Thanks so much for posting this video.😂
I've never seen anyone kill an interview like that!! Inspirational!! Wish Michael Parkinson was still doing his shows and Dame Edna Everage was on it everyweek
Barry and Michael had such a long-term friendship that translated on air; you can see how Michael is so content to let Barry dominate his stage for the whole time cause he knows it's in safe hands. You can see Barry almost break once right before the "toy with the priesthood" comment; that lower lip almost breaks rank. I've watched this at least 50 times and can't stop! So damn good!!!
Dame Edna is timeless. Speaking as an American, we need someone so innocently hilarious and whose comedy is brilliant! Dame Edna simply takes the audience along on a story of her life and adventures. The best part of her routine is that all of us know someone like her, and we can all relate to her life's adventures. She truly was peerless in the world of comedy, and I am disappointed that I never had the pleasure of watching her live on stage. I am so thankful that there are several videos here online where I get to enjoy her brand of humor. Thank You from all of us for posting this! It makes my day each time that I watch it. And Parkinson's reaction, along with Sharon and Dame Judy's, makes it all the better. Well done!
I knew nothing about the Dame, when a friend and I saw her on Broadway in the late 90's. One of the great theatrical experiences I have ever had! The brilliance of Barry Humphries is equal to any of the great comedians of the past; W.C. Fields comes to mind particularly. They both take us into a unique comedy reality of their own making. And, in addition, Barry does it with 4 major characters; and is witty just as himself. That we can watch and laugh over and over at the greats is another marvel. That is what I call true genius...
I was fortunate enough to attend several of Dame Edna's shows. I recall one at the Palais Theatre in Melbourne, where she dressed up an elderly lady as a nun. The the end of the show. when the gladiolas were brought out, she handed several to the 'nun'. As she hurled them into the audience, Dame Edna remarked 'I think I'll call her The Flinging Nun'. Priceless!!!
Simple music can make you sing simple hug can make you feel better simple things can make you happy, i hope my simple Hello brings smile to your face,,,
Definitely, I remember her at the Golden jubilee concert for Queen Elizabeth and she literally stole the show which had the greatest lineup of British music talent in history. The diamond jubilee was rubbish by comparison.
I watch this “interview”, in which Edna hosts her mate Parky’s show, every few weeks-it never fails to deliver smiles, laughs and being bowled over by the wit, timing & professionalism of adorable Dame Edna!
Dear Barry… a fellow Australian, his Star 💫 will always burn brightly! Many thanks for all the many many laughs over so many years. Always larger than life itself, what a legacy! It’s a standing ovation from me! 🤩❤😂

@@jamiew1664 Don't be ridiculous. Look at her body language, the relaxed posture, the informal way she draws her feet up and kicks off her shoes... if she was uncomfortable, she'd be sitting upright, shoes on and a frozen smile on her face.
@@pepshaven6520 she’s mirroring Sharon because she’s nervous, and Sharon is more confident.
I can't really tell how many times I have watched this. And it's getting more and more hilarious every time I do. Unbelievably funny, witty, cheeky, plain brilliant! Dame forever!
i'm glad it's not just me. LOL
Me too!!! Watched it sooo many times, I love it and think it's the best/funniest I've seen
Barry is at true artist...
Agree. Hilarious. ;-)
Same here. Absolutely brilliant!
I watch this so often. It’s a masterpiece of performance by Dame Edna, and ably facilitated by all three others there 🌟
Barry Humphries is most certainly a genius. Have seen dame edna for many years, but this was really brilliant. thanks youtubers and modern technology for making all this stuff available.
Giving an Atlas to the Bushe's who were not being able to find 'Overseas' in it, is a masterpiece.
She almost went to Shepherd's Bush by mistake...
Brilliant!
I watch this several times a week, and I laugh more and more each time. What a genius Barry Humphries is.
The best interviewer with the best guest. Superb.
Simple music can make you sing simple hug can make you feel better simple things can make you happy, i hope my simple Hello brings smile to your face,,,
Proof you can be hilarious without profanity. Thanks so much Barry.
David Gillett UK
I used to think nothing was funny without a fucking cunt or two. What an idiot I was. Thank you.
You can be filthier than the Edinburgh Fringe without profanity as this "interview" proves!
You can also be hilarious with profanity, as Peter Cook & Dudley Moore proved. ua-cam.com/video/jTifRi3qDk/v-deo.html
in fact she hates profanity but sadly when dame edna spoke out about that, she was slammed for it...
100% TRUE!!!!!
This 15ms would have to be one of the greatest live comic acts of all time. Just hilarious.
I've seen this 10 times already but never gets old
It's 16 minutes of absolute brilliance. No equal..
@@andrewwian4921 absolutely, never gets old it's statuesque
Same here. Classic stuff.
Just pure comedy. I love Dame Edna⭐
Me 2 an ser les
'I'm a homeopath, mom and so is my roommate' 🤣🤣😅😅😅😂😂😂😂 Simply brilliant! R.I.P., Dame!! 😍😍😍
🤣🤣🤣🤣 just brilliant
Barry Humphries is the greatest comedic genius of our day. His timing is absolutely flawless!
You can see Humphries needing to compose himself before the 'toyed with the priesthood' line so he doesn't crack up whilst delivering it. Such a brilliant, brilliant man.
He brilliantly waits for the audience to quiet down, so the punchline isn’t missed.
@@rodnorth1 YES, its all about the nerve of taking that pause, andk now when to release that tension, she is brilliant, and hilariously funny, its a true art :)
One of a kind for sure. So quick witted and effortlessly hilarious, it's brilliant to watch.
The delivery of the punch lines are absolutely amazing. The level of intelligence is out of this world..
whose watching this in 2020 it still makes me laugh as much as I first watch it. Amazing dame Edna.
2021 still crying with laughter
Homeopath lol
No matter if it's Dame Edna or Bruce from Finding Nemo...comedy GOLDEN GREATNESS !!!!
Me !!!!
One of the true improvisational genius's of comedy. I doubt there's been 1/2 dozen stand-ups in the last 100 years that could sit for 15 minutes and do what
Humphries just did.
But even if it was a prepared gag he was in a league of his own in
the world of humor
@@spactick I agree that he was brilliant, and he did improvise when he is interacting with audiences. But the bulk of what he does is very carefully prepared. Sharon even stepped on a couple of his punchlines, leaving him struggling a little to pick things up again.
I watched a slew of his chat show interviews in a row and there was quite a bit of repeat material. It's more of a performance than an interview or conversation as such.
@@premanadi really, it seems so spontaneous. I saw him here 'live' in San Francisco several years ago and he interacted with the audience
with people who were definitely not part of his show and it was hysterical. It did not look planned or practiced in any way. But who knows.
Thanks for the input
@@spactickYep, that's part of his brilliance, making it all seem off the cuff. I'm sure that when he interacted with a live audience, that part was spontaneous.
" ... and my special guest Michael Parkinson ..."
She just OWNS every stage she goes on!
Possibly my favourite bit. She is in total control from the moment she appears.
This has to be the best Dame Edna interview ever! I keep watching it after a crap day at work and it lifts me up
That's good!
Wonderful talkshow, incredible guests, and host, and I am in love with Dame Edna!❤
Her comedic timing is superb. I can listen to her all day long!
Hello how're you doing?
I love how Dame Judy and Sharon, take off their shoes halfway through, and get so relaxed
A Master, the likes we’ll never see again
Dame Judy was living for it. She was genuinely enjoying herself and I think they all were. This is one of Dame Edna’s best.
I've watched this little interview more than dozen times and every time I laugh so hard I start to cry. Dame Edna... shall live forever. What freedom she is... to be and say what she will. There's still hope in the world. Sincerely.
I like how Dame Edna thanked "HER" guests at the end of the show. Just proved how in controlled she was, and how at ease Parky was also.
You mean, like it clearly has been preserved?
@@squishedpimp Yeah you wonder some times.
Im laughing at you right now you twat
❤
Dame Edna is fabulous! I can't get enough of watching her. I'm one of her biggest USA fans! Bravo Dame Edna!
Dame Edna was always hilarious. She insults the hell out of people in such a comical way.
And a loving way lol 🤣
Dame Edna 'is', not 'was'.

Thanks so much for posting this video.😂
bonus points for mentioning foster brooks. dame edna and foster brooks will never be topped!
I've never seen anyone kill an interview like that!! Inspirational!! Wish Michael Parkinson was still doing his shows and Dame Edna Everage was on it everyweek
Jonathon Adlingon here in Oz they’re replaying the Parkinson show on Sunday nights. It’s such a treat.
I've lost count of the number of times I've come back to this, such a tonic in these dark times, I laugh so hard every single time. Absolute genius!!!
What a journey and Ph.D on how to host television courtesy of Dame Edna. Pure class and pure comedy. Nobody had a chance.
I'd forgotten just how funny Dame Edna was. I swear I nearly pissed myself I was laughing so much. What a brilliant comedic mind.
The word genius is bandied about too often , Barry Humphries is a true genius , so clever !
Indeed. 👍🏾
Fabulous! 👍🎬🎥💜
Ditto! I love his style of comedy. I have also lost count of how many times I watched this one... one heck of a classic good humor presentation!
I must have watched this ten times..... Completely marvelling at the sheer talent of The Great Barry Humphreys.
Simple music can make you sing simple hug can make you feel better simple things can make you happy, i hope my simple Hello brings smile to your face,,,
What is the "innocent" part? Her entire comedy is about winking at filthy subjects without saying the actual words. Brilliant, but innocent?
What a perfect mix of characters. My favourite interview of all time.❤ RIP Dame Edna, the manager Barry Humphries and Sir Les
She would've been the greatest Oscar's host of all time.
I can see that, she would have been hilarious although I think the show would have run for 5 hours instead of 3.
Definitely, I remember her at the Golden jubilee concert for Queen Elizabeth and she literally stole the show which had the greatest lineup of British music talent in history. The diamond jubilee was rubbish by comparison.
You do know "she" isn't really a "she" right ?
@@davidridyard3726 the character is a she.
Or prime minster
I watch this “interview”, in which Edna hosts her mate Parky’s show, every few weeks-it never fails to deliver smiles, laughs and being bowled over by the wit, timing & professionalism of adorable Dame Edna!
Only got to look at dame Edna and I'm in stitches 😄😄😄❤
