  • The savage missiles hurled at Kathleen Stock in the stocks of Sussex University gives the lie to the pretense that her tormentors should be pitied as an oppressed minority who just want to peacefully get on with their life. I’ve long admired her gentle courage in the face of vicious bullying. When we finally met at the Dissident Dialogues Conference in New York this May, I felt an instant affinity. It was a pleasure to conduct the following interview.
    --------------
I will be on tour of North America, UK & EU talking about my latest book, religion, life on earth and beyond. I will be joined on stage by a range of friends and foes on stage. The events will include a Q&A and a limited meet-and-greet. You can get your tickets here: richarddawkins...

60-year-old great-grandmother here, with no "transgenders" in my family that I'm aware of. I completely agree with everything Kathleen Stock said here. The whole "gender" concept is beyond insanity! I sometimes feel like I'm living in a dystopian novel! I recently did a BSc in Psychology and was quickly shut up by a professor when I mentioned on a forum that gender relates to social identity, whereas sex is biological (since someone asked if they meant the same thing). I also realised that my assignment marks depended on what my tutors wanted to hear, especially regarding LGBTQ+ (hope I got that right) and not really about what I thought. Very sad. I think parents are more likely to suck up to their kids' wishes these days, as upsetting them could easily invite a psychological label, such as the 'N' word, and today's parents are easily and ruthlessly "cancelled". Social media and being exposed to repetitive information through algorithms is definitely shaping impressionable young minds and minimising various perspectives. Critical thinking is decreased this way, especially as younger individuals have a stronger urge to socially conform and be accepted into their peer groups, which influencers understand is inherent, since we're social animals with tribal instincts. Yes, this affects us all, but younger people even more. The parent-child hierarchy has reversed and 'newspeak' is real.

I'm in an area and industry in the US where this is prevalent. As an older progressive white male I was pretty much "live and let live" thinking there's no real harm in this. Eventually I began to look at it as maybe just selfishness that could border on narcissism. A person says they are trans and the entire surrounding world must accept and bend to their whim. When the "trans" colleague arrives in the morning, everyone is on eggshells worrying might they say something wrong. Change your lifetime of language least you make some newspeak faux pas or "misgender," a crime worse than murder. Seriously, that kind of fear, what a power to have over people. One day someone railed about J.K. Rowling. I wondered at what she said that could bring forth such venom. I eventually found her now famous post, "dress however you please, call yourself whatever you like....." I was completely taken aback at the absurdity of the attacks. That sent me down the rabbit hole where I discovered Maya Forstader, Helen Joyce, Stella O'Mally, Kathleen Stock, Sall Grover, Graham Linehan, and many more people speaking honestly and intelligently on the subject -- and suffering for that speech. I also discovered my ignorance about "trans healthcare". Turns out it's not flu shots and blood tests, but drastically altering bodies, including children. "Trans healthcare", Orwellian words.
One sad thing about getting informed on this subject is that my stand now puts me on the same side as rabid right-wingers with whom I have no other common ground. I'm now the lone goat standing off to the side from the screaming right wing-sheep led by equally vile activists as the people promoting this contagion. I hope the young people here in the US begin the shift back to reality as is happening in other places.

Well said. I am in Australia and have had almost identical experiences. From the "live and let live" to being the leftish liberal now seemingly siding with the rabid right-wingers. And the rabbit hole experience continues - I have just finished reading my eighth book on this madness with Judith Butler's latest one full of incoherent, sometimes impenetrable gobledygook being that last one. I believe we live in uniquely stupid times.

Same experience for me - I feel really uncomfortable being on the same side as the right wingers on anything given their track record on social issues. However the data seems to be very poor overall and particularly in the area of youth gender care, certainly not sufficient to justify the medical interventions that are being presented as a treatment. There seems to be a significant medical scandal brewing in youth gender care.

Well it depends, if someone were debating my right to co-exist peacefully then I might consider them an enemy. There are fundamental religious movements who feel anyone LGBTQ+ needs to be rounded up and dealt with by the government permanently, and I don't think its possible to peacefully disagree when they are willing to take actions towards that goal. It's simply the paradox of tolerance. Though I agree in the sentiment that there needs to be more mutual respect in debates as well as listening and reasoning in good faith.

To quote Chomsky, “There are lots of things I don't understand -- say, the latest debates over whether neutrinos have mass or the way that Fermat's last theorem was (apparently) proven recently. But from 50 years in this game, I have learned two things: (1) I can ask friends who work in these areas to explain it to me at a level that I can understand, and they can do so, without particular difficulty; (2) if I'm interested, I can proceed to learn more so that I will come to understand it. Now Derrida, Lacan, Lyotard, Kristeva, etc. --- even Foucault, whom I knew and liked, and who was somewhat different from the rest --- write things that I also don't understand, but (1) and (2) don't hold: no one who says they do understand can explain it to me and I haven't a clue as to how to proceed to overcome my failures. That leaves one of two possibilities: (a) some new advance in intellectual life has been made, perhaps some sudden genetic mutation, which has created a form of "theory" that is beyond quantum theory, topology, etc., in depth and profundity; or (b) ... I won't spell it out.”

‘Gender’ as now used by the ideology is simply a sex-based stereotype that has been reified into an ‘identity’ that a person has or is and so is integral to them and sacrosanct. But then they want to dissociate the sex-based stereotype qua gender from sex itself. And that dissociation leads to the irrationality and internal contradictions of the ideology. It’s pure nonsense. I refuse to use the word ‘gender’ - i just speak of sex and sex-based stereotypes and if somebody insists on the word ‘gender’ as distinct from ‘sex’ then i force them to explain themselves ,and then invariably cannot.

In Italian we use "gender" in grammar. Because as you may know, in European languages as well as in Greek, everything has a gender. In Italian, the sea is male, the chair is female, the table is male and so on. Even animals, when you don't know the sex of a specific one, have a standard gender, such as cat and lion are male (the word also has a female form, but if you talk generically you always use the male form) but the tiger is female.

For what purpose? Also try this: What does the following on p230 mean? "Its localist appeal to anti-imperialist sentiment is an appropriation of a Left critique, but surely not one." That is verbatim. From the preceding sentences the "Its" might be referring to opposition to gender, English or objection to multilingualism or something else. How would any reader know? Like so much of this book it is convoluted and non-sensical rubbish. And, here is another, same page: "In a multilingual epistemology, there are no foreign languages since every language sounds foreign from within another language; or maybe every language is foreign, which means there are no languages that are foreign." If I had written something as silly, as incomprehensible, as that in my PhD it would not have been passed - in fact the draft would not even have got by my supervisor. Gender is a red-herring term. Biological sex is real, binary, immutable, established at conception and observed - not assigned - at birth.
Gender is hard to define - mostly because the very people pushing the idea are impossible to pin down on what it means. They'll conflate gender and sex, or differentiate between the two, as needed for their rhetorical purposes. If we understand gender as a socially constructed set of norms, roles, and expectations that is culturally superimposed on biological sex, rather than debating whether there are two genders, or three, or more, or if there are eight billion, a better idea would be to do away with the concept altogether - to dispense with it entirely and just acknowledge the reality of biological sex. Wear what you want, be as traditionally "masculine" or "feminine" as you want to be, like the colors you like, play with the toys you like - but know that biological sex is real, and that's what matters in things like sports, safe single-sex spaces, and language.

But the system churns out liberal woke PhDs and the admins and DEI of universities makes it impossible for philosophers to tell the truth about free speech and defend rationality. @@Celestina0 somebody is in academic philosophy. The more important question, that a philosopher would actually ask, is - what’s the argument that shows T ideology to be incoherent? You didn’t ask the obvious question, so but I’ll answer it anyway. 1) the ideology claims that sex and gender are different, like apples to oranges, but then also relies on the idea that sex can ‘align with’ gender or ‘not align with’ gender. Makes no sense what ‘align with’ could be. What’s actually going on is that ‘gender identity’ is just a hodgepodge of beliefs and desires. Beliefs can be true or false, and desires can be fulfilled or frustrated. And so somebody with gender dysphoria just has a combination of false beliefs and frustrated desires regarding their bodily sex (i.e. being male but wanting to be female and/or believing to be ‘really’ female, trapped in a male body). Furthermore, the ideology requires a nonsensical essentialism about ‘gender’ that is also circular (so it’s incoherent in two ways): i.e. that a woman is whatever identifies as a woman. This definition would get you an ‘error’ message in a basic Excel program. Nonsense. Incoherent. And this gender, so conceived, is both essential and yet also a social construct! Nonsense again. Incoherent. Even Slavoj Zizek, a far left ‘philosopher’ (loosely construed), acknowledges the fundamental contradiction of the ideology as advocating for the idea of ‘gender’ as being completely essentialist while also being completely anti-essentialist - socially constructed. Nonsense. Academic philosophers know the ideology is complete nonsense, but it’s very low-level lightweight to refute it and debunk. And the prize you get for showing how obviously nonsensical it is is that you get pilloried, abused, threatened, fired and cancelled like Kathleen Stock. So most academic philosophers do not go near this issue with a ten foot pole and are just waiting for this idiotic cultural fad to pass - like flat-earth, creationism, Marxism, etc.

      @RC-qf3mp Місяць тому

@@Celestina0 i answered the question in the first sentence - the source of the claim, which is what you asked, is “somebody in academic philosophy”. It’s well known. About 95%+ of academic philosophers over the age 40 in analytical philosophy departments (real philosophy that is named “Philosophy” and not ‘gender studies’ or ‘comp lit’) know gender ideology to be incoherent, not even false. A theory can’t possibly be true if it contradicts itself. But this is too lightweight to deal with philosophically. It’s not philosophy, it’s activism, and the goal of the activism isn’t to rationally persuade, but to bully people. So there’s no point in trying to rationally persuade a group of people who want to bully and cancel all dissent. So academic philosophers who want to go on with their lives and not get harassed just avoid the toxic gender crowd like the plague + covid times 1000. There have been plenty of academic philosophers and even high school teachers who lean towards philosophy who have refused the pronoun nonsense, gotten fired, gone to court, and WON six-figures in lawsuits. Look it up. That’s what real academic philosophers think of the gender religion.

Numbers can vary across different countries, but the estimate is that 80-90% of trans identifying males are heterosexual cross-dressers. The activists within this cohort are the most aggressive about having the legal right to enter women’s sports and spaces, redefining the word lesbian to include them, and the “rights” of children to medically transition. See Assistant Secretary for Health in the Biden Government, Rachel Levine, for the latter issue. He wants no age limit on social and medical transition. The irony of course is that these heterosexual men rarely transition themselves. They want to keep their “lady diques” or “shenises”. Edit; homosexual trans identifying men used to be the majority at least until this century.

    Great discussion, thank you!
Two things I took from this (having already heard much of the discourse subject matter elsewhere), are:
1 - "an inner feeling that no-one else can verify" (Stock) is spot on! Any man can 'self-identify', put on a dress and some lipstick (or not!), and enter women's spaces just because he says he "feels" as if he is actually a woman! ANY man ... including predators, perverts, r*pists, 'pdf files', groo-mers, violent mysoginists, etc.
2 - "Being trans-racial is more plausible than being transsexual" (Dawkins, paraphrased). Considering the level of inter-racial marriage and procreation, it is true that race is somewhat on a spectrum, while sex is not (discounting genuine cases of DSD), and racial 'identity' is therefore something that can be variable. As someone recently said, "If I excavated your remains and checked your DNA, I couldn't tell what race you were, but I would immediately know what sex you were."

I’m a male, and I’m 5 feet 4 inches tall. Now, I’m not happy about this, and I often think that some aspects of my life would be easier if I were, say, 6 feet tall instead. Now imagine if I said to you, ‘from now on, I am six feet tall. Why? Because, inside, I feel six feet tall. That’s the true me. So from now on, I demand that you refer to me as being tall. Furthermore, I don’t want you to ‘pretend’ that I’m six feet tall. I want you to actually alter your thinking and perception of me and, ultimately, truly believe that I’m six feet tall, even if all the evidence supplied to you by your retina, optic nerve and the V4 region of your brain informs you that I might be 5 feet four.’

    • @OmegaGrunt

You can get surgeries or other treatments/apparel that make you taller though, and therapy around body dysmorphia has been largely more successful than trying to correct gender dysphoria with therapy alone. If you told me you were sensitive about your height and I immediately responded with "Too bad, biological reality, you are short and always will be, people will dig up your bones and say 'wow this guy was short'.", I am in-fact being an asshole and while I am "correct", it doesn't excuse that behavior.
It also ignores that people are commonly mis-gendered anyways because gender expression isn't binary, some people look more masculine, or feminine, or entirely androgynous and it isn't rude of them to politely correct others when the wrong pronouns are used. It's just as impolite and irrational to say "No sir, all the evidence supplied to me by my retina, optic nerve, and V4 region of my brain informs me that you're a guy, even though you were born a girl and never transitioned, so I'll be using He/Him for you".

Did you ever stop to think that promoting delusion for the sake of politeness might have unpredictable negative consequences for society as a whole (eg.: women lose their spaces)?
There is only one height surgery and it is incredibly expensive and violating to your body, it doesn't even guarantee you'll regain full movement and autonomy as the natural skeleton and takes months if not years to recover from. Do you think it's polite to tell somebody else this risky painful surgery is better for them than who they naturally are? Also. it's not accessible to all short people living in this world, so are you only supporting rich people who can afford it? Moreover, endorsing therapy means you believe there's something inherently wrong with a 5"4 dude and he really needs to remedy it, so you're pathologizing shortness. I think this is incredibly more impolite, rude, and more of an asshole move than just otherwise being okay with reality, seeing it for what it is, and sympathizing with him. It also is better for him to be okay with it versus be delusional and manipulate and force you into "supporting" his "remedy", and you force yourself to betray your sense of reality just to feed his ego.

Well I am a trans man, and I don’t enforce this “ideology”, or even consider it an “ideology”. I also don’t believe in this rhetoric that insues this belief of the gender identity being akin to a spiritual alignment. I don’t go on looking in the mirror and put on what I consider masculine just for the sake of copying what masculinity seems to me, which further alienates the progress we have made to forgo these stereotypes. I am trans because I’ve never been more comfortable being regarded as male, regardless of how my masculinity presents. I’m not trans because i didn’t like being seen as “feminine”, I am trans because being regarded as female, whatever that entails, made me highly uncomfortable and frankly depressed. It wasn’t because I was trying to become what society expects of men or trying to escape what society deems of women; I am trans because this just makes more sense to how I function and how I view myself. That being said, I am not trying to shove this experience down anyone’s throat or even make them call me something they don’t want to. Most of us, us being trans people, are quite scared of the implications of what being trans means. Some may be doing it for wrong reasons, and they may be doing it in a way that promotes harmful stereotypes, but most of us are just navigating what being ourselves mean. Of course, I am not dissuading the fact that people are causing harm and inciting this sort of public bashing and humiliation that is borderline barbaric. Sexual orientation is far more connected to identity than most people realize or would like to acknowledge. I personally don’t believe that anyone is totally heterosexual or homosexual, and in fact, I think all humans are naturally pretty bisexual, and that we become hetero or homosexual due to our experiences(nurture, not nature). The vast majority of people who have studied human sexuality have been heterosexual men, who of course are biased towards believing that they are the default/normal types of humans. I can think of a few advantages to natural bisexuality in all humans. The biggest one is population control, but also, prevention of young, impulsive male sexual predation on young women and children. And then of course, having sex is a wonderful and effective way of deepening social bonds, and because humans are so interconnected and interdependent, deep social bonds have always been imperative to survival, though much more before the advent of agriculture than after.

it means that civilization is in decline .. Yesterday I tried to watch a seminar in which the academic explains what is the evidence that a woman is a woman and that it is not enough to say that she is female because the academic says that he has a female cat but she is not a woman ..Where is the beauty of women, the beauty of men .. and the beauty of a man's love for a woman and a woman's love for a man, the beauty of humanity, do I have to describe the sea or give it a definition or else .. there is no evidence that there is a sea?

I would love some advice on how to deal with this issue as it concerns children. I live in a liberal community in the northeast US and in our local grammar school, they are teaching children that "you cannot assume gender," they are making kids put pronouns on their nametags, and there are several kids in the school who "transitioned" over the summer - much to the confusion of the kids in my family. How do we approach this issue with them?

@@Amy-tl2xeWhat with social media, hopefully these kids come across gender critical awareness as they get older. But yes it's a shame, as my niece was taught gender idealogy ideas at school when she was under ten, and we were shocked. But then a year later her friend who likely also had the same lesson, was abused by a biological male identifying as a female, so now and both are still young, both dont really trust gender idealogy. It's odd as it's like 1984, when parsons was arrested as his kid has been brainwashed into newspeak idealogy, and even more oddly, the gender idealougues claim it's not being taught in schools. Well, I say as long as we have Dawkins and Rowling and others stating the truth that biological sex exists, then by the time their adults, they will be able to see with their own senses, and evolutionary created senses that males and females exist,

I don't understand how Butler became totalized and hierarchized to this extent. When I studied feminisms/postmodernisms in the 90s, the idea was that these theories were to be understood as in conversation with one another and interested in generating new questions, ways of thinking, not new dogmas. The idea was that meaning is constructed within master narratives, historical contexts and apparatuses of power, so keeping meaning fluid, self-critical, non-hierarchal, contextualized, would avoid issues of coercion, dominance, etc. You didn't want to be accused of totalizing, hierarchizing, ahistoricism, essentialism, binary thinking, etc. The new gender theory can be accused of all these. So postmodern/feminist theories are not the cause of the new trans ideology, bastardization of these theories is.
As Butler posited that gender was performance, Haraway posed deconstructing gender and sex altogether by becoming non-binary cyborgs, the French psychoanalytical feminists called for the jouissance of inventing a female language by writing from the female body, de Lauretis told us all (men too) to call ourselves lesbians, etc. This convo was generative of new tools, new questions, new landscapes to think in, but split theory from practice. What has happened to how these theories are taught that Butler dominates and has become dogma put into practice?
I agree with Stock that flipping our construct of gender to one where the social performance (femininity/masculinity) determines sex (manhood, womanhood) is regressive/patriarchal, and that the notion of inherent gender identity is essentialist and expressive of Cartesian dualism. I'm not entirely convinced that this means trans identity is a "fiction" rather than a "construct". Would love to hear her discuss this with a non-Butlerian expert on Pomo feminist theory.

You’re giving me flashbacks to attempting to study these things in the 90s 😅. You’ve presented the authors well, much better than I can. Maybe the answer is simply that most people trying to explain Gender Trouble in a sound bite said “it’s about gender as a performance” and most people could relate to that because we’ve all played up or downplayed sex stereotypes at some point.
The other might be that Judith Butler was happy to be interviewed on her philosophy and weigh in on the trans debate. She’s recently spoken about her disdain for lesbians’ aversion to penises, so she’s at least talking in prescriptive ways. Like Camille Paglia, she seems to enjoy the spotlight. Many don’t. If the author herself is saying “this is how you should interpret my work” then people will do so.
