  • If you think the digital age destroyed print culture, this short documentary may surprise you. But I Love The Zine explores the thriving zine scene in the San Francisco Bay Area. To devotees, zines are more than just self-made publications, they're tools for building community and offer an antidote to the disconnectedness of internet culture. In this film, viewers are taken to studios, galleries, and zine conventions where they're introduced to a dynamic small press community. Publishers like Jeffrey Cheung (Unity Press), V. Vale (Re/Search), Tiny Splendor, and Jess Wu (Mixed Rice Zine), share their process and explain why self-publishing matters.
    A film by Fiona MacDougall.

Great video, one thing I wish it would of covered a little more is the impact that zines have on the art culture, what is art in society and what that disruption means for empowerment and liberation.

Great little doc! I always wondered who the "V. Vale" behind Re/Search was. Nice to see all these makers I've read for years, and finally get some faces to the names. :D

Why is this only focused on visual artists? Zines can be great for anyone wanting to spread information. Patterns for fiber artists, recipes for foodies, instructions for DIY's, gardening information, advice, etc. Visual Artists are important and this is a great tool for them but I didn't see any zines about any other topic.

Y'all keeping the Rural People from enjoying the Art of Zine by excluding them because some and most of them can't travel to the big cities.
Most Zine people refuse to even purchase a Zine from online. So sad....
All well, I said my peace, I know there will be haters from the big cities....

I agree there should be more rural community zine expression for sure. I've been trying to get my local art show to implement zines for YEARS. But they just want oil painting 🤷🏼‍♀️

It's a legit thing for people to lean away from getting a zine online- no reason to fault folks for that preference. But your point that it limits accessibility for rural populations is legit too. Hmmm... so what other ways could the problem of distribution/ connecting rural zine creators with zine fans be solved? There must be some way...
My first thoughts- it would probably depend on the content of the zine and who it might appeal to... then find a way to reach that audience that doesn't mean going to a big city or traveling very far. In the 80's music was a big deal for zine culture- especially punk. Music, food, other events and places people gather are options to reach your audience. Or find a way to use the internet to connect with the zine fans who will buy online. Just some thoughts.

It's 4 years later and San Francisco is falling apart. Tent City Trashville. It's ripe for a Zine, call it: Poop & Needles. Explain to people in the future what happened, was your hobby stealing $900 worth of stuff from CVS or was that your new job? Was your role model Fred Flintstone or Scooby Doo? Don't forget to eat Bran Flakes cereal.

Spoiler alert: tow the ideological line and you and zine will do just fine. Go off-piste and you'll be done for 'hate speech'. The Borg with a large, colourful wardrobe all competing for cool points and friends and a good reputation. Nothing of interest anymore.
