Really it stands for Fan-Magazine. They were published on cheap paper, xeroxed, and distributed to dedicated fans of a certain band or subject. Blogs replaced fanzines, but the spirit was that anyone could do it, you just xeroxed and stapled them together and there were hundreds of them depending on the band. The fun part was seeing the creativity and resourcefulness of each zine.
The first zine I ever received was in 1989 when I was in kindergarten, and we were partnered with a “grown up” 3rd grader. My partner created a zine for me, with a short story about a hero earthworm named “Wormy” and I still have it to this day.
I love your creativity. And, oh as a former cut and paste artist creating ads and specking type for the yellow pages, I can tell you that running the copy thru the waxer twice at 2 angles say, 10 degrees and 350 degrees, works the best for pasting up!
Van, you have inspired this Spirited Man. I can call my self a chef, musician, writer etc. but the act of creation and the thought process there within is what my spirit is tied to, and over the past few weeks of binging your content I have never been more inspired to just DO. Thank you Van
I teach high school photography and we don't have many resources to print high quality at the school. for the advanced class we are doing a black and white Zine and I will print it at staples we just might have to do this with every semester. I will share this. Love seeing a zine layout with that machine. Thanks Van!
I went through a very heavy “grunge” phase in my late late teens/early 20s (not by clothing style- I just emerged myself in late 80s/early 90s Seattle & greater PNW grunge music and culture) and was really into all the “zines” I could find from those days. That’s where I learned what a zine even was. I’m 31 now so it’s been a long time since I’ve even heard the word lol. But this video was awesome and it also brought back lots of memories.
I've been a computer nerd all my life. I'm a developer, I spend my days on computers, and I love it. Yet, the analog world is fascinating to me. Something I see from afar, I don't know much of, making it even more appealing. On top I love control over my stuff, and I hate buying new things (my computer is now 10+ years old). This fascination over the analog gained another level thanks to your videos. Thanks for the inspiration, looking forward to read the zine :)
The Spirited Man is just just full of surprises. Leaving gifts like this one. I guess the surprise factor, as a rule of gift giving, really does make for a happy ending :).
I became a patron after watching this video. There are almost 4,000 subscribers now so I missed this one and another zine. I am so sad about missing this one. Anyway, thank you, Van, for inspiration.
Dang it Van! It worked now I am a paying member. Thanks for convincing me. Happy to contribute so little with so many to create such a small return to you. You are worth so much more but thank you for making it the price of a goooood coffee :)
I love how your Chanel has evolved to include your creative process and influences. I aspire to be as spirited man such as you. Peace and wellness to you and your family. Keep going Van. I wish my only way to reward you for my benefits was more than subscription and viewership. But alas, we operate our family of five on a budget. But you inspire me everyday to not treat our consumer goods as disposable. I also have learned from you to appreciate my wife of 22 year’s creative talent and encourage it. As well as help create a space to let her bloom. Thank you Van.
I just finished creating two books for some research seminars in graduate school for architecture. Doing it yourself is so rewarding, for one, I did it booklet style like this and stapled, the other was printed double sided, stacked together, and bound with screw posts. Very happy with the results, this video is very timely.
Did you adjust the images to allow for creep when folded? 6 pages, 110lb card stock. if the end user trims flush, the inner pages will be shorter than the outer, could put your images near or inside trim safety. 26 years of printing :) I appreciate the detail in this video.
Hey Van, I used to make such zines in the early days when I was playing underground metal music - we did it to promote new unknown bands - people sent those zines from one fan to another, usually photocopying them along the way. Cool times :)
Not sure if this next idea/thought/tip is for you Van, because you seem to make work with purpose, and all the choices are there for that purpose. But if you, or anyone else would want to do this themselves; I found it to be nice to use a heavy duty paper cutting table to cut the page ends flush. This wil work only with a max ammount of pages and the type of the paper is also a factor. I found it nice to do that.
Okay, that’s it.. I’m going to patreon to have a look and that’s how it is, because I like your stuff and the way you look at life/existence.. what ever the right fraise is, I think it’s some what clear what I mean.
I would call that stack of bound pages a signature. I would use the word registration to mean the set up that makes sure all your printing is accurate and fits the paper you use in the exact same way.
You're not ripping off Tom Sachs. 'Zines were around long before. At worst we make homages to them. In the same way I painstakingly printed out and bound scans of Ten Bullets (harvested from a collaboration site some years ago). I then used this to make my own Working to Code for my shop / studio. Is it influenced by Sachs? Yes but also by many other things. The content is original even if inspired. Regardless - looking forwarding to printing / binding yours (zines are still a thing with my [modern] kids and even my very [not] adult collaborators)...
Wish I could support you on Patreon just to get the Zine's. Since I can't because I'm just a student, you've inspired me to do the very best next thing! To make my own. To accumulate all the information heroes of mine, such as yourself, share with the world! Might come in handy! Can't wait for the next video.
@UCxp_P3MT9uZ5u5w-xFBDUHQ I am sorry to hear you are broke. Though I do not think 5 bucks a month is that much. That said, I am not going to send it to you. It would take the spirit away.
@@pacechcz I understand completely. I deleted my original comment because I felt ashamed for even getting the idea. I’m a huge fan and he’s an inspiration to me so I will find a way to get 5 dollars in the next couple hours!
@@vito3608 You will never regret the dicision to become a patreon of the spirited man. Thru the years I did patron many artists. This time, for the first time, I do not feel like a patron but like having a patron in Van :)
Far as I know, he gets his music off some dude / gal that he sometimes (?) credits to a person in the description of his videos / just before the video starts. Assuming that it always from the same person. Trying to find an example
@@MrStevem121 The musician is Grey Gersten, but I noticed slight shift in the music few videos back and the crediting stopped. Although it is still synth, I think Van is doing the music himself. In Casey's video about Van he said Van did the music for their videos in the begining, since they couldn't afford it to hire somebody else. There's also a footage of Van playing some kid piano.
The music is a great throwback to industrial videos from years back, school films/film strips, Eames etc. As soon as any of this music drops in Van's videos it takes me right back to be a kid and watching weird science film strips at school, random stuff they would broadcast on PBS etc. It's such a throwback to very specific things and times.
I was so intrigued to see this Zine that I signed up with patreon and joined your membership… just to see that it has already been taking down… say it ain’t so? any hope of getting a copy? you got me hard teasing max Fischer and Herman Blume.
Love the zine idea. You should make each volume available only until the next volume comes out. So you can't procrastinate and they'll be sort of limited editions.
Lol. Yeah, I watched the whole thing I just missed that part apparently. My wife and I were talking about how great his videos always are. I guess great minds think alike!
Great video, lovely to learn about zines. I must admit I misread the title as DIY zipline, which I was looking forward to watching, and subsequently was a little confused. Van, could you do a DIY zipline?

Came to the comments for this. Thanks a lot👍🏼
Shoutout to the ones who learned what a Zine was because of Rocket Power
