An education in the diminishing artisan community. Same thing in Africa and likely other cultures as man relinquishes his livelihood to conveniences. Interesting too, how there were more employed and healthy when hand blocking compared to higher unemployed and sick while also polluting the environment when using screen printing thereby making the community sick. It's hard to grasp if you are not an artisan that depends on your work for a living. This is a fine piece of work that proves conveniences are not always sustainable in this industry as in many other industries. Thank you for bringing this forward.
Thank you for your kind words. Great observation, so true.
Wonderful documentary...a real eye opener!
Am in love with block printed fabrics & will make sure I'm careful to buy only handmade artisan and not screen or digitally printed.
Am deeply saddened & non-plussed by the Indian government's (fatal) short-sidedness, regarding favoring screen-printing vs. hand block-printing.
Just because you Can do a thing doesn't mean you SHOULD.
It's a no-brainer...more people employed/respect for traditional practices + esteem for workers/ less chemical pollution with block printing.
I don't understand why this is so hard to grasp! Money?
New technologies are really
Not a boon to humankind if they bring great problems... that's not progress!
Nor is it humane to anyone
The novelty will wear off quickly when the problems become insurmountable.
Then what?!
There needs to be a shift in priorities here.
I, for one, shall be vigilant and outspoken about preferring block-printing... and I promise to remain true to traditional artisan values.
I abhor mass-market and have worn clothes made by a true human economy for more than 45 years.
That's my personal protest & revolution.
If I could change any individual's action through my film, I will be at peace. You said it right about Government apathy, greed, money driven society and advent of technology everything is effecting artisans and their life adversely. Hopefully it will change one day, before it's too late. Thanks a lot for your support and kind word. Akash
Aloha from Hawaii. I enjoyed this film very much. Very educating. I am glad to say I will choose to block print with non toxic chemicals and organic materials. Pono means do the right thing, and that is what drives my business. MAHALO for sharing - Mandi Reanne

Plz share your contact no. I need block printed fabrics in bangalore
This is a great film, very well produced, interesting and informative. I feel very saddened by the condition of the artisans today and their - understandable - reluctance to pass on their skills to the younger generation. I really hope that the Indian government responds in a pro-active manner to preserve these wonderful skills and to ensure that they are maintained. One can understand India's desire to increase industrialisation, but please learn from the West's mistakes. We 'threw out the baby with the bathwater'!
Thanks a ton Mr. Diane for the appreciation and sorry I couldn't reply earlier. Yes, there is a lot going on, so much so, that artisans are reluctant to adapt new markets, technology and demand. And it's the artform that has to suffer at last. I am glad you could connect with their challenges and problems. Even in India we are finding our roots again. Better late than never. Thanks again. Akash.
It's crazy to see traditional artisanal skills like this on the verge of disappearing. The competition with screen printing processes seems somewhat inevitable but it's surprising the government is not particularly interested in providing support to these skilled artisans to preserve the skills and the traditional block printing art form. It seems short-sighted from where I'm sitting. Thanks for this great documentary.
Hi @deborah Giles Thank you for the delightful words. Actually government is not interested in anything. It's a great art. It's very disheartening to see artisan's condition. They are surviving somehow. The only thing we, as consumer can do, is to be vigilant while purchasing fake products and take an informed decision. Thanks again.
i am intrested in learning block printing

Very well shot.
Hey Himanshi,
Thanks.
Really enjoyed this, thank you. How would you say the current situation is?
Hey Kasakosa, Thanks a lot for your appreciation. Current situation is almost the same. No one is doing anything actually. Government is doing nothing. Big players who have flourished with the time, are doing good but small scale artisans's condition is still the same. Many thanks for your concern.
I think it's a major issue. Will try to seek a solution. And thanks for providing your help, really appreciate this. Can you please mail me your profile or work or web link anything, so that I can get a good understanding of your profession and experience.

Can we help them sell their stuff on ETSY, E-bay or Amazon?
Hi, yes we can help them selling their product on Amazon etc. But there are many challenges in this also. They are not well versed with information technology and have limited man power. Awareness about GOOD HAND BLOCK PRINTING PRACTICES will be a major boost for these artisans.
How where to buy??
Hi, You can buy this online anywhere plus visit Sanganer whenever you visit Jaipur. Just pay attention to the fake and look alike products.
