- Block printing has a 500 year-old tradition in the towns of Bagru and Sanganer in Rajasthan. The family tradition, the tactile nature of work and the fact that most of the work is done at home with the family, all combine to create a rich heritage of the block printing craft in India. Despite the pride in their work and a growing demand of their products, the artisans have a less than positive outlook. Poor work conditions, synthetics replacing natural materials and lack of improved technology are exposing the artisans to potential hazards - making them more vulnerable to sickness and injury. Combined efforts from Government, civil society and artisans are required to revive the hopes of thousands of families and make this craft, a lasting print.

i am seeing this in 2021 . now the situation has changed. they got more recognition now a days but its true. still they don't want their kids to be in this business. all the people shown in this video are still working. and now they don't feel disconnected from the market all thanks to cheap internet and smartphone world. now they get more smarter instead of vendors they started selling direct to their end consumers.

Its really amazing how they have maintained this traditional art. Ngo's helping such workers should put some more effective solutions. It's good to see that there is some work being done for there development and betterment as well.
I loved how the video cover everything from the traditions, to the present time working conditions , the problems being faced and what all is being done to encourage them. :)

When the man was talking about the people coming in to make suggestions for improving their conditions, he mentioned they put a pad on the blocks but it didn't work out. I was wondering if they tried using a hammer to hit the block instead? You could put a pad on the hammer to soften the impact on the block, just like the hand functions. Also, they should get away drom using synthetic chemicals and return to all natural ingredients. This would lower productivity, which would work to drive up prices, so they could make the same or more money, and would also solve the chemical exposure issues.

Jaipur Sanganer me kaam fir bhi achha h..but delhi 70%, or farrukhabad (u.p) jo block printing ka kaam tha wo 100% to lagbhag khatam hi ho gaya h..isska karan masin print ka aa jana jo sasta or chamkdaar hota h or jisse iss hand work ko koi khaas bajaar me maang nahi h . so issme future nahi reh gaya h..

Natural colors from pomegranate, henna, beetroot, termaric, jaggery, indigo leaves, mud and other vegetable colours etc
Watching this now in 2020… has anything improved for these artisans?
