Jesus said, “ If you love me, keep my commandments” which to me is self explanatory. Even if we have faith, we cannot be complacent.

But also remember that our love for Jesus flows from his love. For us I think some people get this backwards
Faith generates works. Read not just eph 2:8-9 but also verse 10. We dont DO our works. We do works given to us.
Actually Jesus says
“If you love me, you WILL keep my commandments.
John 14:15 ESV
Meaning that if we love Jesus (the root), keeping His commands will be the fruit. Truly loving Christ will cause us to naturally obey what he commands through the Holy Spirt. That doesn’t mean we won't sin still, because we will. But our desires truly change.

First off, I think we can all agree, Protestant, and Catholic alike, if one professors faith in Christ, and has no evidence to back that up, namely, works or fruits of the spirit, I think that person has bigger problems than trying to classify works.
The key to works in James 2 is 2:25. Never stop right at 2:24. Context is everything.
James is wrapping up his case that genuine faith in God naturally results in a believer participating in good works. After showing how Abraham's saving faith caused him to act, James cites one more example from the Old Testament: Rahab the prostitute.
Rahab's story is told in Joshua chapter 2. She was a citizen of Jericho who had heard the stories of Israel's mighty God and believed them: "The Lord your God, he is God in the heavens above and on the earth beneath" (Joshua 2:11). So when Israel's spies showed up to prepare for the battle against Jericho, Rahab hid them and helped them escape. Because of her actions, God spared Rahab and her family from the destruction to follow.
It's important not to read something into the Bible which the author does not actually say. James point is not that Rahab's salvation was accomplished by what she did. The entire context of his discussion has been knowing what kind of faith it is that actually saves. Rahab's actions revealed that her faith in Israel's God was more than simply opinion: it was trusting, genuine faith. It's one thing to claim belief (James 2:14), or to have knowledge (James 2:19), but Rahab demonstrated that she had real saving faith-she "was justified," as James is using the term here-by courageously trusting the God of Israelites. This trust led inevitably to her good deeds. This is in perfect harmony with other New Testament passages such as Hebrews 11:31: "By faith Rahab the prostitute did not perish with those who were disobedient, because she had given a friendly welcome to the spies."
Genuine faith in God and good works always go together. Works do not save, but they naturally flow from a legitimate relationship with Christ.

The patriarch Abraham himself before receiving circumcision had been declared righteous on the score of faith alone: before circumcision, the text says, “Abraham believed God, and credit for it brought him to righteousness.”
“What is the “law of faith?” It is, being saved by grace. Here he shows God’s power, in that He has not only saved, but has even justified, and led them to boasting, and this too without needing works, but looking for faith only.”
To say the early church did not teach Faith alone is a BOLD FACE LIE.
It is Rome that radically departed from justification by faith alone over the last 2000 years.

that is really what it was originally. back when Luther posted the 95 thesis he wasn't saying "here are 95 reasons you are a heretic", but that he had 95 points that he wanted to debate over what they are saying and how they compare to what the bible says.
I think the problem is the attempt by many protestants to try and turn faith and works into one entity. They take having faith, and good works coming from that faith and turn it all into one thing, faith.
I as much as I would like to say we believe in the same things, I can not. He mainly mentions the similarities between us but does not talk about a lot of core doctrine that Catholicism teaches that is very contradictory to what we believe.

@@timotheuso9904 first of all just want you to know that every single Catholic is not going to believe the same thing, now they most likely believe their core doctrine although some are not even sure what Catholicism even fully teaches. Now, I don’t know that priest in the video or what he believes so he could believe something very different compared to other Catholics. As a Christian I know that every other Christian is not going to agree with all of my theology but the things we disagree on are second. But, it’s when we start to disagree in the core doctrine like, is Jesus God? How do you get to heaven? And so on, that’s when I have to say “Hold up, we got a problem” because the issue isn’t something like, is drinking a sin or not? The issue is Salvation itself and that’s something that’s a lot more important and not just a problem we can agree to disagree on. Now, I want to make my point very clear. I don’t know all of what this priest believes in, he might be my brother in Christ, but if he agrees with what Catholic doctrine teaches than I unfortunately can not call him my brother in Christ. Now you may think I’m just making assumptions and being biased, but no. I have a few Catholic friends who I’ve talked to and asked what and why they believe what they believe and I’ve gotten different answers from some of them. I also studied what Catholicism teaches just so I could understand their belief more. And if you are a true Catholic who follows the Catholic doctrine, it is more than just an issue we can agree to disagree on. I’m not going to get into the whole doctrine cause this message is long enough but a few things it list is that baptism is necessary for Salvation and you must keep the sacraments for Salvation. Even just those two are contradictory to what the Bible teaches so it is very different from what I believe. And it is very much a works Salvation although many will deny it. If you have any other questions please let me know.
I am Lutheran and I do enjoy watching your videos. Thank you for the explanation and clarification of this subject since it divided western Christianity. I agree with your understanding of the Lutheran explanation of justification. If I can put it simply , Lutherans believe that if you really believe in Jesus and he really is your God and Lord then good works can not help but come forth from you. If no good works come out if you, then you are probably a hypocrite.

I once was asked by a protestant, "But when do you know you're justified?" I honestly couldn't understand the question, so I answered, "When I am allowed entrance into Heaven I will know I am justified, until then I hold on to my faith, I try to live my faith, and hope in God's mercy." My friend thought I was odd.

Bung Scrung you don’t know for sure if you’re fit for heaven until you’re there. To say otherwise would be presumption upon God’s mercy. Regardless, justification can increase once the initial grace of justification has been gifted to us by God. So by practicing the faith we become holier, increase in grace and fall deeper in love with God.

@@mrs.redeemed3600 , faith is a gift , but it is not the only gift. Love is greater than faith (1 Cor. 13:13). The devils believe, but they don't love. So real belief in Jesus includes love, as the Church has always taught. (1 Cor. 13:2). True faith is an act of charity.

For the ability to have Faith in your belief is not acquired by your own merit but a gift from God. While good works also come from God, however, initiative through our will to choose to do works that are good. The "good" means what is done for God's greater glory alone. Thus, it is good works with faith that will save us.

I love your perspective! I am actually in the process of converting to catholicism. I was asking God this same question earlier and came across these verses. We are obviously saved by grace due to the fact that all our works are rags compared to God. But it definitely still matters that we produce good fruit in cooperation with Grace and faith.

this is the unmerited Grace and a Free Gift of God that he gave us in Baptism and Faith...
Example is Infant Baptism...
The baby did not do anything...His Baptism is a free Grace and Gift of God that justifies him through the Faith of his parents, which is also a Free Gift for Faith is also a Free Gift of God to his parents...
Ultimately, our initial Justification is by Grace Alone...
Now we must work out our Salvation with fear and trembling and remain in the state of grace until the end as scripture says....

Very good video. Thank you for your deliberate, precise, fair explanation of both sides. Too many times I hear exactly what you said in the beginning “Protestants believe you can do whatever” and “Catholics think you can earn your own salvation.” It’s much more complicated and nuanced than that. There are definitely distinctions, but it’s nice to see a fair take on the matter.

You could extend a hand to a few here and there but Lutherans among many other protestants have grown up with rumors, speculation and lies about Catholicism.
We have been extending a hand for decades watering down the faith to be more protestant and thats why we are losing people. Vatican 2 is borderline apostasy and filled with sacrelige
@@kodingkrusader2765 So true! However, in my opinion, you are being too nice with "borderline". Brother Casey, quite brilliant in philosophy and theology, still is a typical product of Vatican II.
In a video he posted on the subject of Transubstantiation and "Why Protestants can't receive Holy Communion", often times he uses the word "Table" and never "Sacrifice": very telling.
He is also in favour of receiving Communion "in the hand" and of the congregation drinking from the Cup.
I understand he's walking on egg shells, but Catholicism has practically become Lutheranism with Vatican II.
At the same time in the US Protestantism has further distanced it self from Lutheranism and even Calvinism with all the bizzarre myriads of "Christian" denominations that sprung from the "New awakening" movements of the 19th century.
Therefore we've been chasing a very fast Hydra. Pathetic.
I believe that a Catholic, even as recently as from the 18th century, would recognise and find himself more familiar with an Orthodox Divine Liturgy than with the modern "Mass" or whatever it is that it has become.
I can not disagree with the Orthodox that call us Heresiarchs since, through our sins and arrogance, all kind of heresies have spread with the Reformation.
I have great respect for the Orthodox Church that has not changed ever (Ecumenism = Anathema) but they do quarrel a lot over legalistic issues: see the recent reciprocal excommunication between the Patriarch Cyril of Moscow and His Holiness Bartholomew the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople New Roma over his granting Autocephaly to The Ukraine! It was a Mistake, but I feel sorry for the Patriarch of Constantinople bullied and ridiculed by Cyril.
I also think the Orthodox were correct in arguing that Rome was wrong to add the "que" (Filioque) to the Nicene Creed (Changing a sigle word = Anathema). But that was done by the Pope at the time to combat Arianism which was rampant at the time in the West, and reinforce thus the Divinity of Christ. However, there were more underlining political reasons to the Great Schism (Freedom from a distant Emperor in Constantinople etc.)
The funny thing is that I am an Italian Traditional Catholic, but also an atheist! :))
Nevertheless I am appalled to see what Catholicism has become.
It basically abdicated and signed it's own death sentence.

This totally makes sense to me. I learned about the Theological Virtues a bit more recently in college and I was thrilled when you talked about responding with love. Seeing humanity as good and the theological, as well as cardinal, virtues, is crucial in explaining the disconnect. That being said, I also agree that the difference is not as strong as many would believe.
I'm lutheran and the more I hear about these differences between our tradition and Rome's position, the more they seem like we are pointlessly splitting hairs and arguing semantics when in reality we believe the same thing. Really appreciate these videos and topics, and that you are presenting the opposite viewpoints with good faith and compassion. Praying that through more good will dialogue we can overcome our remaining disagreements and be in full communion again 🙏
If we were all on the same page, there never would have been a division. Martin Luther or any true protestant does not believe in the priesthood, the seven Sacraments, the Vicar of Christ, or the Real Presence. Protestants don't believe in free will. Martin Luther was an Augustinian Monk and Priest for 15 years, before he abandoned his faith. What he didn't expect was others would split from him.
In Protestant layman's terms; Jesus did all the work and we are saved. That is it. But this is what Jesus said; "If you love me, you will keep my commandments." "If you love me, pick up your cross and follow me." That is work.
Oversimplification of protestant doctorine. Only very certain calvinists believe there is no free will. Not all protestants.
@@steliosmitr8245 So did Martin Luther. He didnt believe in free will. He believed in predestination as Calvin. Their separate ideals were with the Pope and the Bishops. When you really study protestant beliefs, you get a sense they have deconstructed all that Christ set up.

How many sects and denominations are there? I've seen the figure 40,000 on the Web --- but actually almost every Protestant has a particular belief system.

Thanks! I've been studying the Reformation. Being a convert to Catholicism I was horrified to see the changes that Luther et. al made to the faith, but it's comforting to know they there has been movement in doctrinal thoughts that are a bit closer to what they originally stated.

You know, I do agree with you, but that got me wondering why we haven't seen many similar explanations prior. It isn't like Brother Casey opened any secret book - this was all public, Church material. I'm guessing that people gravitate toward the bumper stickers (me included) because, well, they're bumper stickers - you don't have to work too hard with them.

@@rayazsoman9893 if one were able to truly keep every single minutia of the law they would be saved, but no one is able to except for christ. that is what Jesus was teaching the man. he did not truly keep the commandments as he placed his wealth above God and thus broke the first commandment.

Great presentation on a difficult subject. Both sides need to stop the oversimplification of the other side which will be a good starting place.
Who started the issue? I think it is wonderful that the Catholic church is always reaching out towards those who have started the Schisms. We are responsible of bringing back everybody into the ONE Fold which Jesus said is God's people.

Is it problematic that salvation can't be attained solely by works, but damnation can be procured solely by works?
I don't care if its covered in snow; I still don't want to step in it.
Luther is stupid; you can not be righteous and a sinner at the same time, once you are justified that's it , totally cleared as though you never committed a sin. The Catholic guy is just as stupid, he says that after you are totally cleared of all sin guilt and charges, justified by the blood of Christ's Cross, that you need to be sanctified , which he equates with the removal of the root of sin. What do both positions do with the fact that Jesus "took away" the sin of the world John 1:29 We are saved by the grace of Christ through the faith of Christ AND THIS NOT OF YOURSELVES it is a gift of God. This guy is still talking about sin , which Jesus took away and justified us by His grace . Jesus doesn't need the faith you have in him , which he gave you anyway. He justified all men by His grace and His faith and when you realize this it will be because of the measure of faith he gives to each man Romans 12:3 All things rely on God's grace " A man can receive nothing unless it is given him from heaven " John 3:27 " faith rests on grace " Romans 4:16

No, the word means " to set apart " for a sacred service, God set Jesus apart for a service as He did the tabernacle and its objects of service. God set mankind apart for sacred service BEFORE he justified them; if He did not set them apart for salvation, how are they to be saved , lost walking blindly with no hope.

We are clean from our past sins , but we still sin. That is why believers have to confess their sins to be washed away from mortal sins. God is truth and there is not any justification without sanctification. That is why the Catholic guy says that we all need to be sanctified. The blood of Christ justifies us and sanctifies us. Salvation (Justification and sanctification) is an on-going process. Salvation is NOT a past event as Luther thought.
You are right when you say that saved ones were set apart for a sacred service. Protestantism misses the point at ignoring that "Love, (charity, agape) is the fulfilling of the law". Rom. 13:8-10.
All we have to do is to receive Him ( receive HIs gifts, His works- no one is good except God alone , not rejecting them). Not rejecting Him. A man can receive nothing unless it is given him from heaven.
The key is : God wants all men to be saved. Are we willing to receive His gifts? Are we willing to receive Him?
"He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name" John 1:11-12

@@nevbillett7554 , you misunderstood the catholic guy. The Catholic guy said that believers are totally cleared of all sin guilt and charges. You seem to ignore believers keep sinning. the phrase “those who are sanctified” can be translated “those who are being sanctified” (as it is in the ESV translation). The present participle suggests that there is an ongoing application of the merits of Christ’s single offering, unlike the Old Testament sacrifices, which needed to be constantly repeated. Hebrews 10:10.14 can’t mean all future sins are automatically forgiven because the Bible elsewhere teaches that there are conditions for having our future sins forgiven.
Consider, for example, Jesus’ teaching in the Our Father: “Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors” (Matt. 6:12). Jesus then gives us commentary:
For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father also will forgive you; but if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses (vv.14-15).
According to Jesus, a condition for having our sins forgiven is that we forgive others. But by making reception of the forgiveness of sins conditional, it can’t possibly be true that our future sins are forgiven. What if we don’t forgive others in the future? Jesus seems to imply that it’s possible for a Christian to choose not to forgive his debtors and thus not be forgiven himself. If our future sins were already forgiven, then such hypotheticals would be unintelligible. Scripture tells it is possible to believe for a while. We must persevere believing Jesus. Blessings

@@MrKev1664 I just looked up the passage you quoted, and as a student of the word the passage is not simply about obedience but an assurity of whom you are obeying. There is also a misstatement the passage is directly about the church. The passage in context is simply about obeying and honoring God. Now Matthew 16:17-19 is where some disagreement come into play. Catholics tend to use this as a justification for the office of pope yet many Protestants see it as the indication upon the testimony more than the person. As a former protestant bishop I do care enough to set some form of clarity and I hope you take better care to remain in Gods word(The Bible) and regular prayer.

Thank you for this video. Unfortunately, not all Protestants are following the path of Lutherans in working out these kinds of understandings. Some continue to condemn the Catholic church over works,, and also "worshipping false Gods" when we venerate Mary and the Saints. I wish more people understood the concept of Intercession.
@cuinn837 It is hard for Lutherans. Their belief system is engrained in them so deeply, it's like taking a rag from a dog with clinched teeth.
Intercession is like a letter of recommendation. You ask the saints to pray for you. You ask our Lady to pray for you. When one goes to college, how many go around asking their teachers for a letter of recommendation? Interceed for me is what they are asking. Same difference with the saints and Our Lady. We glorify God when we go to them. They did His will.

Don't ever worry about Mary overshadowing Jesus. Our Lady always brings you to Jesus. What happened at the wedding at Cana? Did Mary over shadow Jesus? No, she interceded for them. She told Jesus, "They have no wine." She said, "Do as He says." Does she utter any words of "me"? This is an example of intercession. Isn't it beautiful how God works?
I myself agreed with protestants but later found out that actually Both Catholics and Protestants mean the same thing in context! Why the division then?

It's history, Jan Hus and Martin Luther both criticized the Church when there were priests selling forgiveness, the former was killed the latter started the Reformation and split the Church, something that had never actually been his intention. It's somewhat akin to Pandora's box. the thing is in Germany for example you can still see the split between Reformation and Counterreformation if you look at voting patterns etc. Luther's ideas came into an oppressed society. And people took his ideas further than he wanted to. Within 150 years, there were multiple wars, areas were split according to religion. If you lived in a Catholic city you had to be Catholic or move and vice versa. There were very few towns that allowed both confessions in the beginning. And the thing with correcting something wrong, there was another split form the Catholic Church in the 19th century when the pope was declared infallible - since then there are Altkatholiken (old Catholics) in Germany. Getting people to agree on one version of Christianity might be like trying to herd cats

There are errors in many ways in all forns of Christianity. The solution is solid traditional teaching brought with a modern understanding of how that looks in our time, combined with holiness. Hokiness is the presence of God alive in a person - encountering Jesus' s life alive in another is profound. It is love alive. But truth without love builds rebellion. Brother Casey, as a Buddhist monk myself, I've enjoyed your videos for quiet a while.
I believe Tillich gives a pretty good description regarding the Lutheran take on justification, "One could say that the courage to be is the courage to accept oneself as accepted in spite of being unacceptable."
In addition, you said, "Justification is an ongoing process of sanctification that requires us to respond with love."
Don't you think we could slightly alter this statement to make it Lutheran? Imagine something such as "Justification is an ongoing process of repentence that requires us to respond with humility."
In the most extreme cases, responding with humility could mean "cultivating self-hatred and the love of God." (as Augustin and Luther actually say).
The way I understand it, Luther had in mind to participate through humility. He does say that when one is small, God does good through him. In a way, one must not be full of oneself, but empty oneself to make room for God.
I feel much of the disagreements between Luther and Catholicism had little to do with the meaning of the scriptures and the teachings, but rather with the way it was understood, used and politicized. Hence, we might understand "justification by faith alone" to be but an antidote that might no longer be relevant in the present time, or that ought to be re-examined.

@@jcxkzhgco3050 Although there is a rule to possess no more than seven items (a bowl, robes, a needle, etc), most possess more nowadays. Although there is a rule to possess no more than seven items, we can use what belongs to the community or what belongs to others provided they agree to it.
The ideal is not to abandon belongings (that is a means) but to abandon afflictions and negative actions.
Regarding ties with others, we are not supposed to be hermits, because we are supposed to depend on the lay community and interact with people. They support us by giving food, medicine, building lodgings, etc, and we uphold our vows (to be exemplar) and give the laity teachings. The ideal is to depend without being a burden, but to be a like a lamp in a dark world.
Nowadays, there are monks who are hermits and grow food to be independent, even though it is against the rule. It happens a lot in China. But each predominantly Buddhist country developed its own ways of practicing the Way and emulating the life of the Buddha.
As much as I could understand Luther, it seems that he held an extreme view of faith which not even the early Church Fathers of Christianity taught. No future revelations supported his ideals, and his followers had no miracles to prove they came from God, while the Catholic Church has thousands upon thousands. His life turned very wordly after he left the Church with his newfound "discovery" on "Christ's teachings", and all his revolutionary works are violent, destructive, and his followers more so. Thousands of churches were burned down, thousands of beautiful artworks, pictures, and statues turned to rubble, and many Catholics were persecuted if not executed under the new name of Lutheranism - and we are supposed to look at Luther as a nice historical figure who brought clarity to the scriptures? We are supposed to remember him as being humble? There are few Catholics or Protestants when reading about the Protestant Revolution who are ignorant of the horrible character which Luther became after his so-called "awakening". It's not pretty and I wouldn't consider him as such a hero of God as better saints. His followers 400 years afterwards may be far nicer and more rational, but their beginnings still do not originate from Christ and the man who helped create the 40,000+ denominations today shows no signs of having learned anything from God.
He could hardly be called a saint or a role model in his new faith because of his terrible lifestyle. He was fat - years of being a prominent theologian did not lessen his ego, and his new lifestyle did not lessen his animal appetites. He gained wealth, money, power and influence from the protection of wealthy barons who could safely plunder local churches and take the property under the ideas Luther presented where Churches should not have property where he used misquoted scripture to prove his point. He married a nun, breaking his vow of chastity and obedience at the same time. His sons and daughters all died terrible deaths (not a sign of peak health, here) and he had no future offspring afterwards. His leading city which he started his new faith in, Wittenburg (I believe), turned into a cesspool worse than all local cities of Germany; a place which he himself could not control (even when he tried) because of how little restraint (and moral example) he had. He started a revolution against the Catholic Church which he could not control. That does not sound like a man of God to me - not even by today's wordly standards. There is little doubt in my mind that Luther was humble of loving. You would have to have an enormous ego to reject the authority of Peter's successor, the Pope, and still more to claim the successor of Peter is false.
I don't think Luther was called to the priesthood, or maybe the reason he joined was that he tried hiding something from his family. Either way, however you look at Luther, his theology and his moral doctrines were very poorly written when it comes to understanding free will, God's purpose of humanity, and Christ's sacrifice. And if you mess those things up, then there is a fine thread between reality and insanity. So if your intention would be to consider Luther as a smart theologian whose helpful witnesses brought thousands to a peaceful and meaningful religion, his personal life tells quite another story, and the persecutions started by him for hundreds of years afterwards speaks volumes for the origin of Luther's false beliefs. His religion is the farthest thing from "humble". His followers, living in peaceful modern America, may think fondly of him, but they don't know who he is. Nor his true legacy.
Justification is not an on-going process; sanctification is.

We are saved through our Faith. Works are a fruit of salvation and faith. Not an ingredient. ex- There was a homeless man asking for cash near the Church on Sunday, and not a single person inquired about his Shalom. Then a man with approached him and said "I dont carry cash on me, but I can buy you some food." This mans faith was shown in the works that he had done.

However, I do not fully agree with your interpretation of the Lutheran faith. I am myself a confessional Lutheran.
Where you are spot on:
1) I do believe that man is totally fallen - and that there is absolutely nothing we can do to bring us closer to God.
2) I do also believe in the 'rightous and sinner at the same time'-doctrine.
3) And I do believe that by faith - and faith alone - I am fully justified. Even though I am poop in myself and in my fallen nature - I am clean as snow in Jesus.
Where you are not accurate:
1) I don't quite agree with you that Lutherans do not believe in infused grace. We do - just not in the same way as you Catholics. We do believe that we are renewed in Christ - and we have a new will because af the Holy Spirit who now works in and through us. We do believe that sanctification is a process - and it is a progressive spiritual renewal where we work together with God's Spirit. We can say it like this: we are fully justified in the eyes of the law - and God's wrath is no longer upon us. Nevertheless, we can and shall not do anything to earn this justification. The old Adam is still a great factor in our lives - and therefore we must keep on fighting against him by repentance and by turning away from our sins - by the power of the Holy Spirit. However, this sanctification has nothing at all to do with how our situation is on judgement day. On that day ONLY the works of Jesus count.
2) Some Lutherans signed the joint deceleration - but not the confessional ones.

Confessional Lutherans are those who use the Book of Concord as our confession of faith. This includes the 3 creed's, Apostles, Nicene and Athenasian ( if you don't know it it is based on Athanasius defense of the doctrine of the Trinity) The Augsburg Confession which was the Lutheran response when Charles V called his princes to Augsburg to give a written explanation of their beliefs and discuss unity. The RCC adhering princes never produced a written statement but did attend. The result was open war. The Book of Concord also contains the first version of Philip Melanchthon's apology to the Augsburg Confession, the Smallcald Articles, the Formula of Concord, and Luther's Small and Large Catechisms. Most confessional Lutherans have not read most of this but do know 2 of the Creeds (shared with the RCC) and were tought from the Small Catechism before becoming communicate members of their congregations. Other "Lutheran " denominations have deviated from this theology. For example the ELCA teaches that calling homosexuality a sin is itself a sin. The key doctrine of confessional Lutherans regarding the church is that Jesus is the head of the Church not any mere man and that all believers are members.
Slight tangent. Confessional Lutherans classify Christian denominations by their views on the Sacraments. We think that Catholics consider participation in the sacraments a work which earns merit and that there are 7. "Protestants " believe that the two sacraments are symbolic obedience of commands from Christ. Lutherans who do not consider ourselves "Protestant" believe that the 2 sacraments are gifts from God in which God gives us His grace.
Confessional Lutherans believe that every word of Scripture is true and the sole authority of what we should believe. We do admit that interpretation is necessary to distinguish literal commands and teachings from figures of speech, parable and poetry. That is "the four corners of the Earth " does not mean that the Earth is flat and square but "This is my body " DOES mean that Christ's body and blood are physically present in the Lord's Supper.
Non confessional "Lutherans " do not. An ELCA member told me that literal interpretation of the Bible is poison.
Confessional Lutherans also accept that consulting previous opinions on the meaning of Scripture, such as Luther, Augustine and our pastors, is useful. To the degree of requiring agreement for membership in a congregation.

you didnt mention that Luther, when he translated the Bible into german, he has added "only" before the word "faith" to Paul's letter, but I dont remembre which of them...

I am a Lutheran who converted to Catholicism. I didn't feel the leap was that great as to doctrine. This video was helpful in explaining why it was an easier transition from Lutheran to Catholic than it might be for others. I believe I am in the faith that suits me best and have grown greatly in spirit, dedication and total faith. The Lutheran is always in me and I take pride in that. But I love the Catholic faith a bit more.

The formula is Justification by faith in Christ Jesus, Sanctification by the Holy Spirit, Reconciliation with the Father. This is the Truth.
Love these things! As a Methodist we have an interesting thought within the Protestant movement as a whole. We believe in varying stages of grace.
1)Prevenient Grace - God preparing our hearts/minds/souls. Grace from before salvation
2)Justifying Grace- Basically we don't deserve Gods salvation through Jesus, but he gives it to us out of his abundance of Justifying Grace
3)Sanctifying Grace- Basically God working within us to "perfect us", we worship, serve etc.
Kind of similar to how Methodists (and Anglicans/Episcopals) view sola scriptura.
Coming from a baptist background that was what I grew up knowing.
However Wesleyans and Methodists follow what is called the Wesleyan Quadrilateral. A view that scripture is still what everything hinges on, but our faith also relies on Reason, Experience, and Tradition.
Varying stages of grace sounds very Catholic. Catholics believe we are saved after receiving the sanctifying grace, that is not faith alone ( 1 Cor. 13:2).
As to "Sola Scriptura" , every sola scriptura adherent claims perspicuity /clarity. Every sola scripture adherent claims that scripture is what his/her theology hinges on but there are some problems:
"1-An ecclesiological problem with clarity is that it promotes a radical individualism that facilitates the splintering of the Christian community. If I believe that Scripture clearly teaches X, and the particular denomination, church, or theological system of which I call myself a member disagrees with X, I’ve got a problem. I can certainly try to persuade all the other members of the congregation that they are wrong and I’m right. Or I can find a different denomination, church, or theology that better aligns with my interpretation . . . or just establish my own! And that, as scholar Brad S. Gregory argues in his excellent book The Unintended Reformation, is exactly what happens.
2-Sociologically, perspicuity demands we think the worst of others and the best of ourselves. Anyone who disagrees over what the Bible plainly teaches must have a pretty serious problem, which is why Protestants since Luther and Calvin have accused their interpretive opponents of being sinners, deceived by the devil, or just downright stupid. Scripture is supposed to be clear, remember? Alternatively, perspicuity leads us to think ourselves righteous and wise, uniquely gifted by the Holy Spirit to declare what the Bible really and truly means.
3-There are also historical problems. It didn’t take long once Luther publicly rejected the Catholic Church for other European Christians to do the same, often in ways Luther found repellent and heretical. Yeah, but even Catholics know that God prefers to hear our confessions of sin, rather than hear us brag about our virtues.
Two errors to be avoided: (1) thinking that faith will save us without us doing good works and (2) thinking that faith isn't important, only conduct. The first error is the error of Protestants. The second error is the error of liberal Christians who have little or no faith, and/or who think Jesus is not that important.
The true Catholic teaching is that BOTH faith AND good works are necessary for salvation. Faith without works is dead. Works without faith is also dead.

The Church did take even in the 16th c. the approach of listening sympathetically to the Protestants, and convoked the Council of Trent precisely to see how the Church could accommodate to the Protestant positions. In the event, the Council decided that the Protestant positions were so far contrary to Scripture, that the Council ended up clarifying and deepening the original Catholic faith. It is the Lutherans who over four centuries have, because of the untenability of their own principles, become more open to the true sense of Scripture as always treasured by the only church founded by Jesus himself and thus the only church that dates back to His time.
Unfortunately, Luther was excommunicated before the council of Trent was actually held. He did desire for a council to be gathered on the issue, but was thrown out before having a say in it.

This is perhaps the most important question in all of Christian theology. This question is the cause of the Reformation, the split between the Protestant churches and Catholic Church. This question is a key difference between biblical Christianity and most of the “Christian” cults. Is salvation by faith alone, or by faith plus works? Am I saved just by believing in Jesus, or do I have to believe in Jesus and do certain things?
The question of faith alone or faith plus works is made difficult by some hard-to-reconcile Bible passages. Compare Romans 3:28, 5:1 and Galatians 3:24 with James 2:24. Some see a difference between Paul (salvation is by faith alone) and James (salvation is by faith plus works). Paul dogmatically says that justification is by faith alone (Ephesians 2:8-9), while James appears to be saying that justification is by faith plus works. This apparent problem is answered by examining what exactly James is talking about. James is refuting the belief that a person can have faith without producing any good works (James 2:17-18). James is emphasizing the point that genuine faith in Christ will produce a changed life and good works (James 2:20-26). James is not saying that justification is by faith plus works, but rather that a person who is truly justified by faith will have good works in his/her life. If a person claims to be a believer, but has no good works in his/her life, then he/she likely does not have genuine faith in Christ (James 2:14, 17, 20, 26).
Paul says the same thing in his writings. The good fruit believers should have in their lives is listed in Galatians 5:22-23. Immediately after telling us that we are saved by faith, not works (Ephesians 2:8-9), Paul informs us that we were created to do good works (Ephesians 2:10). Paul expects just as much of a changed life as James does: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come” (2 Corinthians 5:17). James and Paul do not disagree in their teaching regarding salvation. They approach the same subject from different perspectives. Paul simply emphasized that justification is by faith alone while James put emphasis on the fact that genuine faith in Christ produces good works.

As a Presbyterian (similar to Lutheran in this sense), I do indeed believe that Christ transforms us inwardly, but that doesn't necessarily happen at the moment of salvation - it's a process that's initiated the moment we are saved. Sanctification is indeed inevitable for a true believer, but salvation is not dependent on sanctification.
Would it be right to say that sanctification comes AFTER salvation? Like we further cement our being saved, after the fact, by continuing in the process of sanctification?

@@AngelBien , Protestants are told that we are justified/"saved" by faith alone and then we are sanctified. That is un biblical. For the early Church fathers Scripture teaches that any justification/salvation that is not woven together with sanctification is not justification at all: "Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost" Titus 3:5. Washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Ghost is sanctification. There is not any justification/ salvation before sanctification.

It's still not clear to me though because I understand that noone earns salvation but my understanding is sanctification is a kind of "refinement/purification of the soul" so sanctification *after* being saved sort of solves the problem of Christian who accept Jesus but are still learning to walk the "righteous path". So, it's like, sanctification is not something you "do" but how you "respond" to God's grace. Am I making sense? I really need to understand this and would truly appreciate some more clarification. When I watch other videos on salvation it becomes a word salad to me and doesn't help me understand how to walk in the faith or understand my "new relationship" with God.
@@AngelBien , thank you for your kind answer. God's people are sanctified because they are set apart for God's special purposes in the world. There is not any justification apart from sanctification. We all Christians agree that sanctification is not something we do. Justification, salvation is not something we do, either. Good works are not our own works ( Eph. 2:10) . Justification/salvation/sanctification is something God alone does and al we must do is receive Him , believe and let God do. All we can do for salvation, justification, sanctification is to receive Him and let Him work . This is all Virgin Mary could do for salvation: "be it unto me according to thy word" Lc. 1:38 2) , receive Him and believe Him. ( see John 1:11-12).
We believe salvation is through faith, but we believe that justifying faith consists of more than an individual's personal belief. For faith to be real it has to include the person's whole life. faith is both a gift and a grateful response to God's mercy/love. Justification/sanctification/salvation is a process that includes the person's whole life.
Biblical justification is not, as Protestant teachers claim, an "extrinsic", "forensic" act of God's grace in which the "alien righteousness" of Christ is imputed to our souls. Rather, justification is a real, inward, intrinsic change that God works in our souls by His grace. Justification is not, as Protestant teachers claim, a legal fiction in which God merely imputes the grace of Christ to the soul of the one justified. While it is true that God does impute Christ's righteousness to us, His saving grace does far more. It actually accomplishes our regeneration and increase in holiness thereby and that is His work alone. We just let Him do.
Neither salvation nor justification is a "one-moment-in-time" event as Protestants are told. We rightly say we have been saved (Eph. 2:8; 2 Tim. 1:9; Tit.3:5) , that we are being saved (1 Peter 1:8-9), and that when we enter into heavenly glory, we will be saved (Rom. 5:9-10;13:11; 1 Cor. 3:15;5:5; Phil.2:12). Salvation is a process that includes the person's whole life . Please, check Abraham's case, if justification was a one-time-event, then Abraham couldn't be or wouldn't be justified after obeying faith the first time ( Heb. 11:8) and he clearly was. Paul taught: "Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?" Rom. 6:16 Can some one obey as Abraham obeyed before receiving sanctification?

I guess the next thing I should learn os why does it seem like most Christians are no different than non-believers somehow. We still struggle and fall in the same ways moat of the time (except for the rate ‘conversion’ that is still often fragile). This is a really great video, one that just shows the reasonable sides of the argument presented. As a protestant, I here the oversimplified criticism of Catholics, as if they are Pelagians. Thanks to the joint declaration, we may now move forward towards reunification. The main issue in bringing the church together sadly will most likely be cultural barriers.
Faith without works is dead. Just like a body without a soul. The belief (and im a protestant convert this is 100% true you can feel the grace) is that we can be saved by faith like jesus says. But the works is what fills us with grace to have the faith. I think thats the best way to explain it simply without oversimplifying.
What i mean is almsgiving out of love grants grace to maintain faith and live a holy life. Same with penance.note you dont have to whip yourself or fast. Any kind of penance. Just like as a kid you did with your parents. Even just a couple extra prayers that night

As a life long Catholic, it always seems to me that whenever a Protestant dives deeper into theological issues and questions of the Christian faith and studies it’s origins, history and development they 9 times out of 10 end up converting. That’s not an exact percentage by any means it’s just an observation I’ve always tended to see with respect to Protestants, especially those here in the states. As Cardinal Newman famously wrote “ To live is to change, and to be perfect is to have changed often. To be deep in history is to cease to be Protestant.”
