I am a Scot of 89 years and when I hear the bands play I have an apple sized lump in my throat and a tear in my eye. "You can take a Scot out of Scotland, but you will never take Scotland out of the Scot.

I am ninety years and so proud of my heritage, every time I hear the pipes play my chest almost burst with pride. If you want to experience real pride. March into battle with a piper. You feel as though you could go through a brick wall such is the feeling.

He we t in a bayonet charge with his mates
I asked what motivated him in such a daring move--it was the pipes Mick and the love of his mates.

Chris yes indeed and Im a S. African and the sound of those Bagpipes impregnate my soul.
I also love the drum players swinging those drumsticks.
Trusting that I'm using the correct terms here.
In SA, I was lucky enough to join the cadet band, at school playing the bugle. Not what I wanted but was the only available opportunity.
I was also taught to handle the mace.
When I saw those drum majors, it made me think back 57 years.
My late father-in-law, a Scottish soldier during WW2, introduced me to this music.
      It's great stuff!!!!

I was this way all of my life, I love the bag pipes.( I am 64 years old). I knew some my heritage, for 40 years, but received the papers in 2016'. All my life I was amazed at how close in mannerisms I was to the Scottish. I found out that on my Dads side, I am the 13th generation cousin to King James 6th of Scotland/1st of England. (and that I worked with a friend for about 13 years and didn't know he was my cousin.) My ancestry went back to two more Kings in other empires other than Scotland. So you could be more than Scottish Royalty. Look at the portraits of the Scottish Kings and Queens, and any wood carving and pictures etc. that you can. You might be surprised to find you are looking at yourself or a family member. My daughter looks just like Prince Charles Edward Stewart and our faces are scattered all over the Royality. It seems that it isn't rare to be related to Royalty, but it is very rare to be a direct line to Royalty. And you most likely could be related to the direct line and more. Here's one that might surprise you, the Egyptians would vacation in England and Scotland. If you do research, do not disregard any strange names. I have a Blevins and a Pleasant for ancestors. And save everything you find, you might find more pieces to the puzzle later. I have always loved the bag pipes and now I know why I love them so...One thing I almost forgot, your Royalty will show. I have had people ask me if I was in the military ( I stood so straight), I never was, and people told my daughter that they could tell I was related to Royalty. it was my ancestory showing.

A yank of Scots descent, but I was 11 before I ever heard the pipes. It set a fire in my blood, and I *ran* to find the source of that glorious sound. It had stopped by the time I got there so I went door to door, asking if anyone knew -- and it turned out it was "Auntie" Ruth McLeod (from Lewis no less!) who was feeling homesick, and had put a record on. To me, there is nothing, I think, more moving than the skirling of the pipes and the banging of the drums! I was listening, spirit roused and heart filled with feeling ... and then these braw lads & lassies broke into 'Scotland the Brave," and I broke into sobs ....
I'm a big fan of Highland music, but there's something very special about this gathering. Thank you so much for sharing - I shall play it again & again.

My sincerest thanks from the Blue Ridge of Virginia! My paternal ancestors reach back to St. Tears, Scotland. The clan Robinson, a sect of Clan Gunn. The pipes have always stirred my soul! I hope that one day, I can stand on the ground of my ancestors and talk to my relatives that remained in Scotland!
A short story about bagpipes. My wife and I bought a small plot of land when my son was two. We put a small house on it. One afternoon shortly after moving in, I was mowing the yard and clouds starting moving in. Then I heard the pipes. At first, they were barely audible but after five min, I could hear them clearly over the lawn mower. My wife walked out of the house and asked if I heard them? I asked her, “You heard them too?” She had. I cut the mower off and walked up the road to see if I could tell where the pipes were coming from. We lived in the country and houses weren’t real close. I didn’t walk very far past my property before I couldn’t hear the pipes anymore.
I walked back to my house and as I reached my driveway, I could hear them once more. Then the wind started to pick up. My wife and son were outside listening to the pipes. I looked up and the clouds had turned black and were swirling slowly. I grabbed my wife and son and ran inside. We could hear the pipes over the wind, rain and hail. The storm passed quickly and so did the pipes. We found out that just over the hill where there was a small lake, a tornado had touched down!
I know it sounds unbelievable, but it’s true. More incredibly, over the ten years we lived there, three other very bad storms were predated with the pipes. The difference was that the next time I heard them, I made sure the dog, wife and kids were in the house first! We’re in the Blue Ridge Mountains, so we get storms, but we only heard the pipes before the worst.
I asked all my neighbors if they played the pipes but none did. I asked if they played recordings and all said no. I shared my experiences and they all acted like I was crazy, so I didn’t bring it up again. But since moving from that land, I’ve never experienced the warnings again. To this day, we look back at our time there as the best time of our lives. We were truly blessed!

My Grandfather was John Bordar Grandison of Glasgow , Scottland and immegrated to Canada in the 1920s with his brothers and sisters who "sponsored" each other till they all had immigrated. My Uncle Peter Grandison, his brother, became an American citizen and designed golf courses. He married a Southern Belle from Nashville , TN and retired to Bowling Green Kentucky after her death.
My grandfather John was a golf pro at the Birmingham AL Country club, marrying his Southern Bell, Velma . They had four daughters , two were born after THIER move to Toronto, Ontario Canada in the late 1930s.
I listen to the pipes and drums often and remember a visit from Granddadys brother Alexander, Sandy, in the mid 1950s when he played his pipes in our back yard in Hueytown AL outside Birminham.
I have searched for the Grandison Clan and cannot find out origins.
If any one reading can help me find out, I would adore our tartan for my cousins and myself. We honor our Scottish ancestry!Lovely March !

The hair on the back of my neck is standing up, I have a lump in my throat and a wee tear in the corner of my eye. I have never been to Scotland, but half my blood is Scottish. My grandfather was a piper from WWI and knocked the local pipe band into shape when he arrived here in NZ.
