Attempting to use aloevera as grafting glue grafting larger cactus on more established root stocks. My root stock had its tips removed in exchange for being looked after as i found a house. Some success, some not, but the successful is on a cactus that shouldn't have taken. Also, the internet takes things to far, dont need to carve up all the cactus, a slight gental trim of edges is all thats needed instead of carving the sides and leaving a ugly join, i use excessive pressure to stop the sides pushing off the graft, gives more surface area and a more aesthetically pleasing join. Im only beginning down the grafting rabbit hole so will probably prove myself wrong with my other attempts doing it by the internet book taking each step to far 😅😊
Excellent demonstration, and have you tried using Schlumbergera cactus as a stock for grafting? It's plentiful and despite its thin stems and being fiddly it can surprisingly work very well, just a suggestion as I read you might try using Opuntia too 😁👍🏻🌵
Thanks man, appreciate the kind words :) matter of fact i have not, I've got 2 of those actually and thought about it once ot twice aswell, but I didn't bother because in my opinion schlumbergera are not my fastest growers so I didn't think it was worth it :) have you tried? Mind sharing some of ypur ecperiences?:) yeah opuntias are in slumber now, but once they perk up again in spring, they'll definitely get the chop :)
@@Lophophanatica I saw a video on You Tube grafting cactus Seedlings onto schlumbergera and it was very good. I had some young Seedlings at the time so gave it a try over a year ago now, just out of curiosity, but it was my first go at grafting then and they fell off and wouldn't stick onto the thin stems! 🤣 well I might give it another go now I'm a bit more clued up just to see if it will work second time round but on the same hand I'm not a massive fan of grafting but in some circumstances it does serve a purpose which I think is great as well for those cactus especially notoriously hard to grow on their own roots, or cactus that are so slow to grow 😉, will be interesting to see how your Opuntia grafting get on 👍🏻🌵🙂
Yes, the scion needs to touch the rootstock entirely. I wouldn't do that as it raises chances of your scion rotting. It is better to give it a little push and wiggle it around to push the air pockets out
Do you ever superglue the graft edges? I started putting a tiny bead around the edge a couple days after the original cut and haven’t lost a graft since.
So you don't put pressure like rubber bands or tape on the scion and they still take? I've been trying to graft seedlings onto opuntia but it's incredibly hard to apply tape or bands because of all the spines so I wonder if I should forget it and just stick it on.
Yeah, in my experience for seedlings pressure is not necessary. You just need to pay attention so that they don't dry out for the first couple of days.
Is it normal for the edges of the scion to lift up? My first two I did about a week ago and they seem to have taken but lifted a bit so I can see the root bundle.
@@Lophophanatica I've had a lot more success after the first try, some of my micrografts are well over an inch across now. Thanks for this video it helped a lot 😁
@@Lophophanatica I think he means during the graft/ during the time after you have put the seedlings on the rootsock and are waiting whether the graft will work
"Hardening" of plants only happen when they are much older. That's not something you can dp over 3 months but rather how a plant is grown for longer periods of time. You can graft seedlings at pretty much whenever you want, it's just a question of preference.the only thing that needs to be adjusted is the rootstock.
Oh nevermind i misread your question sorry. Not sure why, I've done 6 like these, they all stuck without pressure and were all successful. Imo the juices are sufficient to make them stick together
Yes, I only use those knifes to make the first cut if the stock is too woody to cut otherwise, all the other cuts should be made with a "normal" blade to ensure you've got a clean, leveled cut 👍
There's not set time as every container is different, unfortunately. Just look at your seedlings to se what they are telling you, and then act accordingly
I mean theoretically both would work but I guess you mean grafting a TBMC onto hylocereus. Yes that works but from what I've seen pachanoi seems to be the most popular way to go when it comes to TBMC 👍
Thanks for this helpfull video, did my first micrograft last week. But it seems that they will fail. I putted it on a san pedro, it seems like the vascular bundle is pushing it up while drying.. wondering if that ever happend to you? Thanks in advance
Would you be willing to give me the name of the person who sold you the three month old peyote or maybe a good source for peyotes for Medicinal use in Europe?
I grew that one from seed, sourced from a fellow thai breeder. I don't care about the psychedlic/"medicinal" side from these plants as I'm interested purely in the botanical aspect. Plus most plants grown in europe will probably do you no good if that's what you're looking for.
Those Lophophora are a good size for three months
9months, maybe.
But definitely not three.
This one was +- 3 months at the time it was grafted
Damn bro what’s your secret!!!

When aligning the vascular bundles, you mentioned air pockets. Would a drop or 2 of water in between them prevent that do you think?
Yes, the scion needs to touch the rootstock entirely. I wouldn't do that as it raises chances of your scion rotting. It is better to give it a little push and wiggle it around to push the air pockets out
Makes sense. I was wondering if maybe a diluted rooting hormone would work. I have a few expendable Echnobivia pups I may experiment with
No that'll probably rot
Do you ever superglue the graft edges? I started putting a tiny bead around the edge a couple days after the original cut and haven’t lost a graft since.

How do you remove the graft when it has gotten sufficiently big? Does it grow its own roots?
Yes, you basically just cut it, let it dry and plant it. It'll eventually grow roots
Thanks for video I'm in moroco bravo 👍

What is the best root? Myrtillocactus Geometrizans, hylocereus undatus or Harrisia jusbetii? Which grow more fast?
They all grow fairly fast. Depends a lot on your environment but all are suitable rootstocks
hello can you tell me what is the name of the cactus you used as a rootstock?
Trichocereus pachanoi
I thought this was a dragonfruit you used? Will pachanoi work the same?
@@soloplaysgames9965yes and they're both active....so ur lophophoria continues to makes alkaloids.
Would a booger hold it in place? Got lots of boogers.
Probably, yes. It would most likely infect the scion though

I just keep them in the shade until the union has healed over, then they gett full sun for as long as it shines throughout the day
What do you do for other the part of the scion that has roots? Could you graft that too?
You can actually line it up on another rootstock upsidedown..... it'll pup.
No pressure on the scion?
No pressure, no
Why is that exactly? Just trying to learn. I’ve had success grafting larger buttons, but not too much with seedlings. Maybe this is why.

How fast is Hylocereus grafts when compared to other rootstalk/ loph scions?
In my experience not much faster than trichs, they're about the same. In spring I'll try grafting on some opuntias aswell, haven't tried that before

Won’t the big cactus keep growing?
It does, but it pushes the growth in the scion
I have a question. Does ventilation and air help with the growth of seedlings?
Counter question, do you need air to breath? If you don't you'll lose your container to mold
