The sadness of time passing. In x years I'll be gone, all my worries & regrets will be like smoke. Thank God my existence has its source outside this material plane, really. I feel like life is a sad warm song, like Ozu's film stories, but also it's not some sort of trap ... The sadness gets worst when I pretend that this life, which is all we know, is all there ever was or can be. In times of weakness, when I hold that belief by default, life becomes regret, worry, & sorrow. Life is joy.

I hope Japan will preserve and rediscover its identity.

The idea of a collective identity is ambiguous at best, and can get worrying if you dig beyond or beneath that.

Mind you, the alternative is also ambiguous and worrying. It's a complex business, isn't it.

You are human, but you are also a small piece universe that has been stretching out since the big-bang. You are a process that began before your birth, and will go on after your death. This larger Pov helps me out when I get existential. Idk. I read this film as a mourning for the loss of Japanese cultural identity after ww2- you know the sublimation into US consumer culture

I was wondering why this movie was the metaphysical equivalent to dropping a nuclear bomb, and the reason why is because..she Is married. And that's the end of it. No one could choose anything, even to arrange the marriage, it simply was.
