Wes Anderson & Yasujiro Ozu: A Visual Essay

  • Опубліковано 29 бер 2015
  • Wes Anderson is known for his whimsical films with dry humour, bright colour palettes, and for his distinct narrative and visual style. Yasujiro Ozu, arguably less well-known to mainstream audiences, made a name for himself as the "most Japanese of all film directors", known for his calm, minimalist approach to film and his tendency to revisit the same kinds of stories over and over again. The relationship that exists between these Anderson and Ozu, if any, might not be immediately tangible, so the purpose of this essay is try and draw some visual, thematic, and narrative parallels between these two extraordinarily distinct artists. Anderson and Ozu are two of my favourite directors, so it seemed only natural to pay tribute to them and their incredible filmographies. Enjoy!

    Brilliant. I'm learning more about movies from UA-cam videos than I did from the handful of cinema courses I took back in college.

    This was an outstanding video essay! Great job! First of all, I'm pleased to see someone do something in-depth on Ozu, but to show his similarities to a modern-day filmmaker (and someone from another culture and background) is truly unexpected and refreshing to see. I cannot over-stress how much I enjoyed and appreciated this video!

    This is so gooood. The first time I heard of Yasujiro Ozu, I kept thinking of how much his work must have inspired Wes Anderson, but I never really looked for indications. I'm happy to see someone talk about this!

    Excellent video essay, it's really made me aware of the nostalgic flare I put in my own writing. Whenever I learn something new about film, I always apply it to whatever I'm working on at the moment to see if it fits, and my current project is definitely a story of nostalgia and memory. Plenty of classic rock as well.

    Thank you for making this. The comparisons made were great! I like the idea of a "Visual Essay", not that normal essays or written material can't be just as articulate, but the way you formatted all of the points with a voice over and visuals made it really digestible. Thanks again, made me really interested in watching all of those films.

    "The core of this cinematic relationship is an exploration of themes and narratives." Grammatically speaking, that is an excellent sentence, and a concretely stated thesis. Bravo, young lady.

    • @QED_
      @QED_ 6 років тому +2

      Whatever are you talking about (?) "Relationship" . . ."themes" . . . and "narratives" are all ABSTRACTIONS. There's no concrete meaning in this sentence whatsoever. And how can "an exploration" be the core of a relationship (?) That's rhetorically very un-excellent. At the minimum, is should be "the exploration" . . .

    Had something really interesting happen today. Was looking for a good thanksgiving movie to watch and after typing in "autumn" in HBO Max, I stumbled across vintage japanese films due to his movies having seasons in them. I figured there must have been some connection and surely, after seeing they all had the same director, that's how I learned of Ozu. So excited to view his films.
