    Those "ribs" in the CNC/CAM world (MasterCam, etc) are called "Facets". The reason they are on your models is because your machine is running "point to point". I assume your files are in G code. CNC machines have the codes, G2 and G3 that do circular interpolation and generate smooth arcs. Software like MasterCam can reduce the facets in point to point toolpaths (G1) if the user sets a smaller tolerance from true profile when generating the toolpath.(But the file gets very large.) Maybe there is some software that can update your printer to run G2, G3 commands. If not , it might be a good project for the RPi guys :)

    Joel, really nice channel! I'm digging through it tonight. I would like to combine 3d scanning and 3d printing to enable the fabrication and replication of LARGE multi rotor propellers. The Creality CR-10 sounds close (too small, but close). Any recommendations for 3D scanning that can cover up to 24" long objects? Any videos that give an overview of interfacing the systems?

    Hi Joel
    If you want the bed temperature to rise above 85, do it quicker, easier and stay more stable, then it's really easy just insulate the underside of the bed with floor or wall cork tile/s the best part is its cheap and safe. I find on a 220 X 220 bed the improvement is about 40% quicker to heat up.
    The large area on the 300 X 300 bed allows for insulation on top of the cork also to be installed, there are several methods from foils to pipe lagging (you know the black gooey stuff with tin foil backing etc.
    All in all this is easier on the PSU and cost less to run the printer while increasing its lifespan.
    Please remember no foil near the power input to the bed.

      Gatta are u sure? i mean i dont mean to be a dick or anything but alot of people are having issues with this printer but like i said in my other comment, most of them order it from gearbest and they ship it sometimes with warped beds, broken pieces etc and if you order it from tinymachines you get a full working machine because they inspect the hole thing and make sure you have fun. and i was so worried on wich one to buy if this or the prusa since am new to all of this 3d orinting stuff

    • @Valandar2
      @Valandar2 7 років тому +1

      I'm someone who got it from Gearbest, and the ony flaw I had was a slightly warped glass bed plate. As an example, I printed out Maker's Muse's Tolerance Test, and was able to separate the 0.15 knob, meaning it literally performed better than every FDM printer MM had at the time he made the test. I am not only happy with mine, I'm ecstatic.

      I fully understand. I should note that I have replaced the glass on my bed with a mirrored tile from Lowes, 6 for $10 at my local one for 12" x 12". They're flat as can be, and I have extras in case of disaster.

      What is GPL

    • @daishi5571
      @daishi5571 6 років тому +11

      GPL is basically a contract between you and the company as to what you can do to the software (firmware) and what you can expect from the company supplying it. The problem in this case was that Creality used Marlin as the base code for the firmware on the Printer which uses a GPL (there are many different ones that have different requirements) that states they had to release the source code showing the changes done to the Marlin original source code (it was not an all new code they used) They initially refused stating they did not have the source code only the hex code then some licensing agreement issue, at the end of the day, from what I understand is Naomi Wu stepped in and explained the GPL to them in their native language (chinese) and the source code was released.

    • @gg-gn3re
      @gg-gn3re 5 років тому +12

      GPL is a software license. One of the many. It forces users of GPL software to release their edits of the same software. Chinese don't have to do this because they can steal, pirate, and create 100% illegally, but still legal for them. It was nice of them to actually bide by other countries rules and open source it, though.

    Hey Joel, thanks for all your work and advocacy in the 3D printing world.
    However, there is one thing that mystifies me regarding the CR-10's lack of support for thermal runaway! The 3D printing community for years now have hashed over this issue, complete with videos of user's houses that burned up, etc. and the necessity for this protection is pretty well established.
    I gather (please tell me if this is wrong!) that Creality had some trouble in finding the undersized capacitors they were using as the culprit for unstable temperature sensor readings, so instead of fixing this, they just turned off the runaway support and shipped the printers!
    So, why isn't it pretty important to tell folks about changing the firmware to a version of marlin you can control, enabling the thermal protection support, and upgrading the control board with better capacitors if needed???
    I have a CR-10s I bought just one month ago (June 2018) and its temperature readings appear stable, and I love the machine otherwise, but running with no runaway protection makes me distrust the printer until I upgrade the firmware, even if it means not enjoying some of the other features of the printer.

For the Money, would you advise the CR-10 (big helmet builds etc) and a Prusa mk3 for smaller items like Spider-Man lenses?

    • @SerisTaclys
      @SerisTaclys 6 років тому

      I've got a Raise3D N2. I really like it. Main problem is print bed adhesion, BuildTak doesn't work for me so I flipped the plate and use hairspray on glass. Not the best option, but it works. Besides that it prints very reliably and the dual extruder feature is worth it. Although $3k (inc shipping) is a steep price to ask.

    As somebody who is getting back in to aeromodelling, 3D printing is key to providing a light example of those awkward shapes to scale such as the nose cone for a Vulcan.

    I still love my Folgertech FT-5. It has the same print volume but does cost a bit more at 500 USD but it is a solid and rigid frame that is easy to enclose. Could you do a FT-5 review?

    • @austinmatney7591
      @austinmatney7591 7 років тому +5

      Dave about a month ago I was trying to decide between an ft-5 and the cr-10 but I went with the cr-10 for a few reasons. 1. It comes almost assembled, and 2. It was cheaper for less hassle. I have built 2 ft 2020 i3 kits and they taught me a ton, but I wanted something that just worked out of the box without 20 hours of build time. The cr-10 was cheaper and took less time to get amazing prints. Just my opinion of course.

    • @la-ia1404
      @la-ia1404 7 років тому +1

      Wellcar the rate prices keep flcuating on the cr10 there is barely any price difference now. Especially for the USA plug.

    • @kdanagger6894
      @kdanagger6894 6 років тому +2

      You have the better printer with the FT-5. I've build several printers from scratch - including a heavily redesigned C-Bot/D-Bot build and I can say with certainty that closed frame printers like the FT-5 are inherently more rigid. Also, the mendel style moving bed is heavy and archaic. A machine that only moves the heavy printbed slowly in Z is going to have much faster and precise X and Y moves. It's all about inertia. You can't break the laws of physics.
      The closeup of the fins on the rocket at 2:05 show heavy ringing and artifacting. This is a sign of high axis inertia and /or a lack of rigidity.

    Great review Joel - I've been waiting for your opinion on this printer but didn't have enough patience and went ahead and bought it on a gamble. I'm glad you finally had a chance to review it though, as I'm sure there are a lot of other guys out there still on the fence and will jump on this based on your review.
    Hope to see your thoughts on all the various upgrades out there and all the other models you plan on printing.
    Keep up the great work!

    Hi.. can you please compare the quality of prints with cr 10 and the new obsidian by kodama? thanks :D

    • @truegregthompson
      @truegregthompson 6 років тому

      Also backed it and it doesn't really matter how they compare I think. The obsidian has less than half the build space this thing does. My mpm has the same surface as the obsidian and likely print quality will be roughly the same is my guess, but the deluxe obsidian will have way more features. Same thing here, as his past obsidian review showed it was nice printing with nice features. I can say though, after 3 weeks with my mpm, I want a cr10 for the build space. As does my wife. 120x120x120 is way smaller than I figured.

      The taller on is "Spin Vase" by Devon Montes at www.myminifactory.com/object/3d-print-spin-vase-38295. See also similar "Spin Vase 3" at www.myminifactory.com/object/3d-print-spin-vase-3-41523

      Gearbest can't hold anything at customs. When it is in customs it is in your country. Plus if it is being held up for "ransom", learn which carriers do that sort of thing. For example I will not accept anything that is handled by UPS. Crazy brokerage fees on top of tariffs.

    • @LiveMusicOntario
      @LiveMusicOntario 6 років тому +2

      Not true in my experience. I've ordered many things from Gearbest and they arrive within the announced range of dates, usually on the fast side. I had one item that was running late past the expected date and I contacted Gearbest not to complain but to see if they could track it. Instead, they sent out another one immediately, no questions asked. I ended up with the first shipped unit a few days later and the second one arrived on time. No extra charges.

    The CR-10 you recieved must have been pre-tested by the manufacturer because out of the box these 3D printers are just a shabby as all other Chineses 3D Printers.
    * Limit switches are all randomly placed with no stop plates or ajustments. This is the most critical but simple parts of any CNC machine.
    * X axis of the bridge has no packing spacer so it took and hour just to get the bolts in the bottom.
    * No manual or setup guide, just a single sheet of rubish instructions.
    * No plans so you don't know how the thing is suposed to go together or be fixed.
