I started my apprenticeship 3 years ago because I felt trapped in the same routine job every day for 8 years. It gave me the motivation to just walk on site where new developments are happening in my area and just asked if I could chat with the boss. I'm very happy with my decision as I am now a year away from being qualified.

My grandfather is 70 years old, still working. He started hes own company in the middle of the 70's. He did ask me for some help, so i have worked for him for a year now. And this week i started school to get my licens. Love watching ur vids. Keep it up
One thing I've learned about the building trade, especially here in scotland is that it's more about who you know than what you know. I recently got an apprenticeship through my Girlfriends dad. And everyone I work with either has family or close friends who helped them get an apprenticeship.

Hi Scott! Thank you for the great videos! I am on my year 1 Carpentry Apprenticeship here in Wellington. A few years ago, I worked as a laborer in building/construction, then progressed to a hammerhand (labor hire), then l enrolled myself in a local polytech (WelTec) for level 4 Carpentry. After that, I searched for an employer who needs a laborer/hammerhand but I mentioned I am doing Carpentry course with a polytech (all fees to be paid by myself) and all I ask from them is an opportunity to use their projects as my training grounds. When employers notice your keen enough to be a good builder, they will support you for as long as they have projects. I find it better financially too since they are hiring you as a hammerhand therefore your wages reflect your skills/work ethics. When employers go quiet for a while, they will ring their contacts/mates and make sure you can carry on with your apprenticeship. It is working well for me, I build my own reputation and contacts this way, and so far I only had 2 days without work since February 2018 when I started on carpentry. Elijah Hi. You can visit your local polytech and have a chat with a course advisor. Some guys that I know started by doing level 3 Carpentry (1 year full time course). Myself, I watch youtube a lot for instructional videos (how to build deck, fence, doors, framing, weatherboards etc.), reading Gib manual & 3604 book, these are free resources you can find online/trades centers. At the early stage of my career, I was appreciated for being a reliable labourer more than anything else. When a carpenter called in sick, that was my chance. My familiarity of some carpentry tools/skills gave me an advantage. Goodluck!
hey scott ive just started my apprenticeship down in welly, loving the channel one method i used to get into the intrustry was talking to the building reps down at itm, placemakers, mire 10 mega etc and using a few of theyre contacts to get my foot in the door, have a great friday and bring on beeroclock haha cheers
My brother is a carpenter and now licensed builder with his own company, I was lucky enough to sign on with him and am now in my second year. Here in Sydney though, it seems like every second company is looking for an apprentice. Also, jump on a Facebook "Local Jobs" page, there's always people looking for apprentices / laborers.
At 28 I'm about to start my apprenticeship. Point 1 was what did it for me. I started working for a builder as a TA/Labour and showed my interest. 6 months later he's signed me up and i'm very excited, It's never too late.
I'm 27, about to be 28 in over a month. Getting ready to do an interview next week. Definitely feel like I started late but as I say, better late than never. I hope I don't royally fuck up the interview since I'm terrible at them.
@@OTBASH i started when i was 25 turning 26, i'm now 29 and i will be qualified before xmas. It's never too late. You will see there are guys way older than we are on site who are just starting out aswel.
@@OTBASH kind of like everyone else. I didn't like it at first, was worried i chose the wrong trade. But after awhile you start to enjoy it and then you tend to love being a carpenter. Knowing that you have the skills and knowledge to build your own house one day is also amazing aswel. I'm in New Zealand, same country as Scott Brown.

Here in Germany is much easier! We have a whole culture around trade, so much that after leaving high school, germans can choose between going to college or doing an "ausbildung" (is how we call apprenticeship). It normaly takes 3 years, in that we spend 2 days a week studying and 3 working, also is paid and the goverment helps you a bit, best part is that anyone can do it and is easy to get in. I intend on doing mine as a carpenter (zimmerman) and then going to New Zealand or Canada. Your videos are very motivating me! Thanks, keep the good work!

I never served an apprenticeship, just got some casual work as a labourer with a company and then a few years later got a job with a joiner. Did that for a year then decided to start my own building company and have been a self employed builder for almost 3 years now.
I have been a building labourer for 4 months now. How I got started I called all of the people who I knew were builders and asked if they were desperate for more workers. I also sent my CV and followed up with phone calls to trademe adds. I said I'd work the first 2 days for free to see if the employer liked me and if I liked them so there is no risk to the employer. I also said I'd work on the weekends ( to get my foot in the door.) I'll start working for another company on the weekends if I don't think my current employer has the time or money to support an apprenticeship, I have learnt a lot just labouring though.
Why? Im guessing you don't like the idea because some people don't appreciate things they don't pay for. ( Which is fair ) Maybe you're thinking if you offer to work for free then what you are really saying is your time isn't worth anything... Going out to help with a job for fun for a couple hours isn't any skin off my nose, Even if you don't get paid for the first 1 or 2 days and you don't want to work with the company or they don't want to work with you. You can still learn a few things that will make you a little bit more valuable to the next company. Ie. you will get a better idea of what tools the builders have on there tool belts and the terms they use. Before I tried building I did work experience for a day as a fencer and as an arborist for free, it's a pretty cool deal to get know what each trade is like.
In Australia Victoria it’s a 4 year apprenticeship that makes you a carpenter. I did my 20 odd years ago through the HIA building young professionals which offered full scholarship with fees and $500 tools. It was basically a pre-apprenticeship. They also placed me with work experience with a builder who took me on board and signed me up. Only had to go back for one year to do all my school instead of the 4 years, bonus to the boss as he only lost me for a week a month. if you want to be a builder you have to go back to school and do courses which takes about 2 years part time. Then sit in front of the building commission and answer questions depending on which of the building licence you want. All in all love carpentry and with the modern age with new tools and technology with new building practices it’s amazing what can be done.
Woow in England it's a 2 year apprenticeship and the companies I worked for where horrible, they said to me we give the apprentices a tool box but mine never came, I miss carpentry but it's hard to get back into, what about oz?
Yeah mate there is a boom in commercial apartments and so so in domestic. People do give you a go but like Scotty says they weed out the good from the bad pretty quick. It’s also attitude, work ethics and how everyone gets along. There are a lot of self acclaimed carpenters but yeah it’s what you can do that proves your worth. More so people here in Australia try and get young apprentices. The industry has become specialised as I’ve met framing carpenters that don’t know fixing and vice versa. Try try try and try more. Scotty pretty much sums it up nicely.
@@gary5165 I had friends in the industry so I made calls expressing interest until something finally came up. Joinery is just far more precise and specialised, I enjoyed the work more and plus its an easy foot in the door for cabinet making which is where I really want to end up.
If anyone is looking to start as a labourer in Auckland just seen out your CV to NZ Labour Hire, Auckland Labour Hire, The Labour Hire Exchange or any other of the companies! They’re all hiring and wanted new people to start! Just make sure you want to do building so that’s a good start!
I got mine through Facebook I posted on noticeboard and got mine through that because there’s so many out there look for apprentices other wise there’s indeed and stuff and I called heap of business for plumbing and gas fitting
Good advice, I'm currently trying to secure a mature aged apprenticeship(Australia), so its a bit more difficult but your advice of just rocking up to a building site and seeing if they want a labourer sounds like a good idea
As a mature age apprentice (in aus at least, because we are paid more than the under 21 apprentices) it's definitely harder to find someone to take you (I know, I am one). Try to get some experience on a work site - even a few days of work experience in a different trade can be enough for someone to see you want to work and recommend you to someone - that's how I did it. Did work experience with a plumber even though I wanted to be a carpenter and he recommended me to one of the builders he works for.
i start my apprenticeship at the start of september and honestly cannot wait. i did a year in college and ive been working retail, i cant wait to get out on site instead of standing at a till all day
What might help with more work is putting leaflets through the doors, of everyone in eye sight of the place you are working on that particular day, put tasteful advertising on those tidy vans so they can find which house your working in on that day and shake some hands talk through what your doing for the neighbors they can see your work in real time just a thought boyo
Hi Scott my name is Jordan and I’m a level 3 joiner in the UK. I did my 3 years in college and was lucky enough to get a job straight away, even though I’m a level 3 I’ve still learned more onsite then I have while at college but I’m still classed as an apprentice.
Not sure how it is regulated there but here in Canada for plumbing or electrical you are looking at 5 years apprenticeship with 1-2 days a week & the remainder on the job with a sponsoring firm before you can sit your exams. Then the sponsor employer needs to sign off your work. There are also a bunch of Mafia unions here who sort of guarantee you will never get enough years unless you are signed up to the union & their rules. For a carpenter, you can just set up & go for it if you are half capable. General Contractors are multi trade & use subs for the licensed stuff like electrical, plumbing etc.
I got mine cos my boss is a family friend, but here in England the colleges can find you apprenticeships, even if your not employed yet. But like Scott said, ya still gotta start from the bottom doing labouring and other bits. I'm in my second year and really enjoying it, you've got just gotta be willing to grind sometimes 👍
Im 40 , live in the UK, been a courier for the past 12 years and running a transport company til Aug this year, lost it all! Im now thinking about carpentry as my next career.
My advice to any young man looking for a start in the trades would be to ask around for work for a start. Gain some experience as a labourer and make some contacts in the industry. When an employers takes on a young fella who's starting out he's looking for someone who's punctual, professional, diligent and hard working. Someone who can take instructions on board and carry out menial tasks in a timely fashion. Someone who keeps his mouth shut and ears open. Basically someone who doesn't stand around with his fucking phone in his hand picking his nose! A rarity in the age of the social media zombie.

In aus MBA HIA and apprenticeship center finds the job for you, and best is to be a apprentice carpenter to be a builder as you do majority of the works as a carpenter
I am on my 4th year of college with a degree in criminal justice. I originally wanted to be in the police department but those dreams were crushed because I became deaf in my right ear. And right eye sight is poor. And those are disqualifiers in the field. so I’m out of luck on that. the one thing I have enjoyed so much was woodshop in high school so I kind of have a knack with building stuff but I never had the money to get my own equipment. But I’m going to finish my degree since I’m practically almost finished with one more semester and then go straight into carpentry work once I’m finished.
I’ve also just hopefully starting mine, working at a trade yard and builders come through you ask talk to them and make good contacts. It also gets up your knowledge of products and what everything is used for in the building process, if your in school and wannna be a building work part time at a mega or placeys and build those contacts early so when you leave school you’ll be ready with product knowledge. Admit there will still be a lot to learn. Cheers SBC

There are some loopholes to get an apprenticeship. I had a friend work at a hardware store and he was very helpful with the contractors and he got an apprenticeship. You can literally work as a maintenance for an apartment complex and you can acquire all skills from carpentry, plumbing, and electric

its like getting any other job, basicly you need to hussle and be at it all the time. Call, visit, email and so on. If, as he said you have connections. Then it will be 100 times easier.

I’ve been a general builder in the uk for over 20 years. I find apprentices are not worth the hassle is takes to train them. Half of them don’t even bother turning up to work on time. And they always seem to let you down at the worst moments.... not surprising really as they don’t earn much... I tend to use just trades now, and foreign skilled labourers.
Sono2 if your good there is plenty of work for chippies at the moment. But you need a good skill set. Learn your first and second fix. Kitchen install is always a good one. In built furniture and storage space /shaker style is very popular nowa days but you need to know what your doing. Then, if you get onto the bigger stuff there is framing out for loft conversions and cutting in new roofs... by this time your’l be doing structural openings and steel work too. Basically most good chippies end up being general builders. I’m a chippie foremost but I do allot of roofing nowa days too. Grp roofing, vertical tiles hanging, block work, lead work ... basically everything needed to do loft conversions and extensions. Carpentry covers a very broad skill set. There is a shit load a learn and it helps if you have natural ability in the first place. It is a tough career choice, your’l end up being self employed and it’s difficult to get a mortgage and secure loans when your self employed. You need to be self motivated and really have a passion for what you do, otherwise it will grind you down. You also need to have a good business mind and be a good salesman too.... it’s not all just being good at your trade. Good luck

I’m qualified carpenter level 4 from Canterbury issue by BCITO,after I moved to Melbourne,they didn’t recognize My NZ qualification ...I don’t know why ...,in Melbourne I can see most building it’s really rough and Quick , Builder only care about the time and the money,,plumber electrician plaster everyone can get Builder license...not like nz 99% builder are Carpenter....

Any united states people here. I got am apprenticeship right away. I went to my local carpenters union. Im in arkansas so i wemt to local 1836. United brotherhood of carpenters amd joiners. If you join the union youll get payed even more. And better benifets. I joined yesterdays and my job at cbm starts monday.
The problem I encounter is that most of the jobs just to get through ask for experience a minumum of 2 years. I've been trying for years to get my foot through the door and although I hear that there is a lot of work, I cant seem to get in. I've also tried going on site, most of the time the head builder is absent, or I dont know the language the builders are speaking in, so that doesnt help, and I may get a cellphone number and try calling, but always no respose . Got any advice?

Gipz hey no disrespect towards electricians or plumbers, but carpentry is more mentally rewarding in the end. It may be different for some but for me personally I am really proud of some of the work I do and I find it awesome how you’ll be able to actually see some of my work years later and show it off to people, and here in Canada, if your self employed, you can make more than one plumbers and electricians if you play your cards right but ya if you work for someone else obviously plumber and electricians make more that way.
Bcito are great for builders and obviously do what they are meant to but one thing I don't like her in New Zealand is how they have pushed more and more trades under them. I'm a qualified flooring installer and we get very little to no assistance when it comes to apprentices and the people they have out and about dealing with them have no knowledge of the industry they are training people for, it can be a real discouragement from hiring one in the first place.
Do you see many women in trades out in NZ?? When I was in Canada I was actually shocked to see just how many were working on constructions sites, etc. Where as in the UK women in any trade is in the the minority and it is generally not seen a vocation for women. Yes there are some women in trades in the UK but it is not widely promoted for women as an option for a career like it is for men.
It's still a mostly male dominated industry, but there is a real push to encourage women into the trades (for example through BCITO). I know when I was graduating 10 years ago the only 'trades for girls' were hairdressing, whereas now trades are promoted more in schools for both men and women. Not long ago there was an event at a place called Proclima hub where female students were invited to have a go on the tools and get a feel for the industry, so it's definitely changing! 😁
@@dressjess That is really good to see, back here in the UK it is still very much a novelty to see women in typically male roles. Very often I feel women in the UK whom are in a trades often struggle for work and are not treated with the same respect when it comes to their trade and skillset. When I was younger there was nothing like this for young women and it is a shame because although it is better than it was even now it is still not offered widely as part of a career choice. I just noticed a young women in some of Scotts vlogs and wondered if women in trade jobs was a standard thing out there in NZ.

@@OTBASH kind of like everyone else. I didn't like it at first, was worried i chose the wrong trade. But after awhile you start to enjoy it and then you tend to love being a carpenter. Knowing that you have the skills and knowledge to build your own house one day is also amazing aswel. I'm in New Zealand, same country as Scott Brown.

Here in Germany is much easier! We have a whole culture around trade, so much that after leaving high school, germans can choose between going to college or doing an "ausbildung" (is how we call apprenticeship). It normaly takes 3 years, in that we spend 2 days a week studying and 3 working, also is paid and the goverment helps you a bit, best part is that anyone can do it and is easy to get in. I intend on doing mine as a carpenter (zimmerman) and then going to New Zealand or Canada. Your videos are very motivating me! Thanks, keep the good work!

I was like that too when I started i was not interested what so ever and I started loving the job after my father let me do the jobs from start to finish,
I never served an apprenticeship, just got some casual work as a labourer with a company and then a few years later got a job with a joiner. Did that for a year then decided to start my own building company and have been a self employed builder for almost 3 years now.

I have been a building labourer for 4 months now.
How I got started
I called all of the people who I knew were builders and asked if they were desperate for more workers.
I also sent my CV and followed up with phone calls to trademe adds.
I said I'd work the first 2 days for free to see if the employer liked me and if I liked them so there is no risk to the employer.
I also said I'd work on the weekends ( to get my foot in the door.)
I'll start working for another company on the weekends if I don't think my current employer has the time or money to support an apprenticeship, I have learnt a lot just labouring though.
Asking to give out free labour is the worse thing you could do.
Why?
Im guessing you don't like the idea because some people don't appreciate things they don't pay for. ( Which is fair )
Maybe you're thinking if you offer to work for free then what you are really saying is your time isn't worth anything...
Going out to help with a job for fun for a couple hours isn't any skin off my nose,
Even if you don't get paid for the first 1 or 2 days and you don't want to work with the company or they don't want to work with you. You can still learn a few things that will make you a little bit more valuable to the next company. Ie. you will get a better idea of what tools the builders have on there tool belts and the terms they use.
Before I tried building I did work experience for a day as a fencer and as an arborist for free, it's a pretty cool deal to get know what each trade is like.
In Australia Victoria it’s a 4 year apprenticeship that makes you a carpenter. I did my 20 odd years ago through the HIA building young professionals which offered full scholarship with fees and $500 tools. It was basically a pre-apprenticeship. They also placed me with work experience with a builder who took me on board and signed me up. Only had to go back for one year to do all my school instead of the 4 years, bonus to the boss as he only lost me for a week a month. if you want to be a builder you have to go back to school and do courses which takes about 2 years part time. Then sit in front of the building commission and answer questions depending on which of the building licence you want. All in all love carpentry and with the modern age with new tools and technology with new building practices it’s amazing what can be done.
Woow in England it's a 2 year apprenticeship and the companies I worked for where horrible, they said to me we give the apprentices a tool box but mine never came, I miss carpentry but it's hard to get back into, what about oz?
Yeah mate there is a boom in commercial apartments and so so in domestic. People do give you a go but like Scotty says they weed out the good from the bad pretty quick. It’s also attitude, work ethics and how everyone gets along. There are a lot of self acclaimed carpenters but yeah it’s what you can do that proves your worth. More so people here in Australia try and get young apprentices. The industry has become specialised as I’ve met framing carpenters that don’t know fixing and vice versa. Try try try and try more. Scotty pretty much sums it up nicely.

@@gary5165 I had friends in the industry so I made calls expressing interest until something finally came up. Joinery is just far more precise and specialised, I enjoyed the work more and plus its an easy foot in the door for cabinet making which is where I really want to end up.
If anyone is looking to start as a labourer in Auckland just seen out your CV to NZ Labour Hire, Auckland Labour Hire, The Labour Hire Exchange or any other of the companies! They’re all hiring and wanted new people to start! Just make sure you want to do building so that’s a good start!

I got mine through Facebook I posted on noticeboard and got mine through that because there’s so many out there look for apprentices other wise there’s indeed and stuff and I called heap of business for plumbing and gas fitting
Good advice, I'm currently trying to secure a mature aged apprenticeship(Australia), so its a bit more difficult but your advice of just rocking up to a building site and seeing if they want a labourer sounds like a good idea
As a mature age apprentice (in aus at least, because we are paid more than the under 21 apprentices) it's definitely harder to find someone to take you (I know, I am one). Try to get some experience on a work site - even a few days of work experience in a different trade can be enough for someone to see you want to work and recommend you to someone - that's how I did it. Did work experience with a plumber even though I wanted to be a carpenter and he recommended me to one of the builders he works for.
i start my apprenticeship at the start of september and honestly cannot wait. i did a year in college and ive been working retail, i cant wait to get out on site instead of standing at a till all day
What might help with more work is putting leaflets through the doors, of everyone in eye sight of the place you are working on that particular day, put tasteful advertising on those tidy vans so they can find which house your working in on that day and shake some hands talk through what your doing for the neighbors they can see your work in real time just a thought boyo
Hi Scott my name is Jordan and I’m a level 3 joiner in the UK. I did my 3 years in college and was lucky enough to get a job straight away, even though I’m a level 3 I’ve still learned more onsite then I have while at college but I’m still classed as an apprentice.

Not sure how it is regulated there but here in Canada for plumbing or electrical you are looking at 5 years apprenticeship with 1-2 days a week & the remainder on the job with a sponsoring firm before you can sit your exams. Then the sponsor employer needs to sign off your work. There are also a bunch of Mafia unions here who sort of guarantee you will never get enough years unless you are signed up to the union & their rules. For a carpenter, you can just set up & go for it if you are half capable. General Contractors are multi trade & use subs for the licensed stuff like electrical, plumbing etc.

I got mine cos my boss is a family friend, but here in England the colleges can find you apprenticeships, even if your not employed yet. But like Scott said, ya still gotta start from the bottom doing labouring and other bits. I'm in my second year and really enjoying it, you've got just gotta be willing to grind sometimes 👍
Im 40 , live in the UK, been a courier for the past 12 years and running a transport company til Aug this year, lost it all! Im now thinking about carpentry as my next career.

My advice to any young man looking for a start in the trades would be to ask around for work for a start. Gain some experience as a labourer and make some contacts in the industry. When an employers takes on a young fella who's starting out he's looking for someone who's punctual, professional, diligent and hard working. Someone who can take instructions on board and carry out menial tasks in a timely fashion. Someone who keeps his mouth shut and ears open. Basically someone who doesn't stand around with his fucking phone in his hand picking his nose! A rarity in the age of the social media zombie.

In aus MBA HIA and apprenticeship center finds the job for you, and best is to be a apprentice carpenter to be a builder as you do majority of the works as a carpenter
I am on my 4th year of college with a degree in criminal justice. I originally wanted to be in the police department but those dreams were crushed because I became deaf in my right ear. And right eye sight is poor. And those are disqualifiers in the field. so I’m out of luck on that. the one thing I have enjoyed so much was woodshop in high school so I kind of have a knack with building stuff but I never had the money to get my own equipment. But I’m going to finish my degree since I’m practically almost finished with one more semester and then go straight into carpentry work once I’m finished.
I’ve also just hopefully starting mine, working at a trade yard and builders come through you ask talk to them and make good contacts. It also gets up your knowledge of products and what everything is used for in the building process, if your in school and wannna be a building work part time at a mega or placeys and build those contacts early so when you leave school you’ll be ready with product knowledge. Admit there will still be a lot to learn. Cheers SBC

There are some loopholes to get an apprenticeship. I had a friend work at a hardware store and he was very helpful with the contractors and he got an apprenticeship. You can literally work as a maintenance for an apartment complex and you can acquire all skills from carpentry, plumbing, and electric

its like getting any other job, basicly you need to hussle and be at it all the time. Call, visit, email and so on. If, as he said you have connections. Then it will be 100 times easier.

Hey Scott I love your videos man thank you for all your work. I finish my pre trade level 3 carpentry in a month looking for another apprentice by any chance
I’ve been a general builder in the uk for over 20 years. I find apprentices are not worth the hassle is takes to train them. Half of them don’t even bother turning up to work on time. And they always seem to let you down at the worst moments.... not surprising really as they don’t earn much... I tend to use just trades now, and foreign skilled labourers.
Sono2 if your good there is plenty of work for chippies at the moment.
But you need a good skill set. Learn your first and second fix. Kitchen install is always a good one. In built furniture and storage space /shaker style is very popular nowa days but you need to know what your doing.
Then, if you get onto the bigger stuff there is framing out for loft conversions and cutting in new roofs... by this time your’l be doing structural openings and steel work too. Basically most good chippies end up being general builders.
I’m a chippie foremost but I do allot of roofing nowa days too. Grp roofing, vertical tiles hanging, block work, lead work ... basically everything needed to do loft conversions and extensions.
Carpentry covers a very broad skill set. There is a shit load a learn and it helps if you have natural ability in the first place.
It is a tough career choice, your’l end up being self employed and it’s difficult to get a mortgage and secure loans when your self employed.
You need to be self motivated and really have a passion for what you do, otherwise it will grind you down.
You also need to have a good business mind and be a good salesman too.... it’s not all just being good at your trade.

Any united states people here. I got am apprenticeship right away. I went to my local carpenters union. Im in arkansas so i wemt to local 1836. United brotherhood of carpenters amd joiners. If you join the union youll get payed even more. And better benifets. I joined yesterdays and my job at cbm starts monday.

The problem I encounter is that most of the jobs just to get through ask for experience a minumum of 2 years. I've been trying for years to get my foot through the door and although I hear that there is a lot of work, I cant seem to get in. I've also tried going on site, most of the time the head builder is absent, or I dont know the language the builders are speaking in, so that doesnt help, and I may get a cellphone number and try calling, but always no respose

Gipz hey no disrespect towards electricians or plumbers, but carpentry is more mentally rewarding in the end. It may be different for some but for me personally I am really proud of some of the work I do and I find it awesome how you’ll be able to actually see some of my work years later and show it off to people, and here in Canada, if your self employed, you can make more than one plumbers and electricians if you play your cards right but ya if you work for someone else obviously plumber and electricians make more that way.
Bcito are great for builders and obviously do what they are meant to but one thing I don't like her in New Zealand is how they have pushed more and more trades under them. I'm a qualified flooring installer and we get very little to no assistance when it comes to apprentices and the people they have out and about dealing with them have no knowledge of the industry they are training people for, it can be a real discouragement from hiring one in the first place.

Do you see many women in trades out in NZ?? When I was in Canada I was actually shocked to see just how many were working on constructions sites, etc. Where as in the UK women in any trade is in the the minority and it is generally not seen a vocation for women. Yes there are some women in trades in the UK but it is not widely promoted for women as an option for a career like it is for men.
It's still a mostly male dominated industry, but there is a real push to encourage women into the trades (for example through BCITO). I know when I was graduating 10 years ago the only 'trades for girls' were hairdressing, whereas now trades are promoted more in schools for both men and women. Not long ago there was an event at a place called Proclima hub where female students were invited to have a go on the tools and get a feel for the industry, so it's definitely changing! 😁
@@dressjess That is really good to see, back here in the UK it is still very much a novelty to see women in typically male roles. Very often I feel women in the UK whom are in a trades often struggle for work and are not treated with the same respect when it comes to their trade and skillset. When I was younger there was nothing like this for young women and it is a shame because although it is better than it was even now it is still not offered widely as part of a career choice. I just noticed a young women in some of Scotts vlogs and wondered if women in trade jobs was a standard thing out there in NZ.
