Thank you ku! So glad the videos help you my friend. Stay tuned more to come
@@lonewanderer_n7 It's so important to always be learning and growing or you'll never have a better life. We have the world's information at our fingertips but also take the time to put some real thought into it. Everyone seems to be looking for help, see if you can take a few days or a week off from work (vacation/sick days) and ask a carpenter if you can help him for free for a few days in exchange for some insight into what its like as a career. Or do that on your weekends (off days) and probably within a month you'll either realize you don't like it or be familiar enough its not so scary to switch careers.
I think Carpentry is a God-given gift and you either have it or not. I'm 42 years old, but would love to learn how to build homes and survival camps out in the woods. I've been told that the first step to becoming a Carpenter is learning how to use a measuring tape, which is harder than some may think. Just watching Carpenters build things eases my mind with peace and calms my soul. Thanks for sharing!
Awesome comment Derek. Thank you so much for sharing. One little step at a time my friend and I will definitely put out a how to use a measuring tape video.
Such a nicely presented tutorial for the uninitiated like me. Seems like a decent person too. Thank you sir!

Carpenters
I come from a family of inventors, engineers, & carpenters. Carpentry is the science of manufacturing with wood. The process started with Surveyors, Loggers, & Sawyers. Some carpenters are joiners (see Japanese joinery), some cabinet makers. Cabinet makers need more precise measurements, so measurements of less than 1/64th inch are used. A cabinet maker can cut to a precision of less than 1/64th inch, and then sand or plane to perfection.
Carpentry is good clean work. If you want to be a carpenter, best is to apprentice under a Master Carpenter, and /or do work on the job. Next is to learn about carpenters tools, and have a few important ones: good belt and apron bag, large metal square, small square/triangle & protractor, levels long & short, chisels of different sizes, electrical & hand planers, electrical drill & bits, brace, electrical & hand saws, possibly hammer & conforming tool, pencil/scribe, compass. Then you will need consumables: screws, pegs, nails, rods. Maybe goggles & gloves & first aid kit (read and be proficient at first aid). Watch your hands and feet! Hydrate! Contemplate different ways of design & construction. Measure and plan at least three times. Cut once, oversize if necessary, and plane, chisel, sand to fit, shim if you made a mistake or must use short wood. Learn types of wood & wood treatments: stain, glue, caulk, paint.
You are awesome my friend thank you for this valuable info. What a treat. Thank you for commenting

Great video lots of handy tips the only thing I would do differently is when using the speed quare as a gide if ya face it the other way you get a greater reference point to start with on anything less then the width of the square it's easier and more accurate Ive found
That's a great idea! thank you joel!

Buy the most expensive tape measure you can find and you'll never lose it again!
Yes mud! maybe if it was 30 bucks you would care a bit more..lol thanks for the tip!
I always put my name on the bottom of the tape about 25feet in . So if anyone finds it or says hey that's my tape. I flip it over an say now way sucker see that's my name. This has come in handy over the years.
@@alaskanken2132 lol if I have to do all that I might as well fight you for taking my tape measure
Great video. I love your easygoing 'vibe', and you have a lot of classic tips and tricks here. You make rough carpentry fun and accessible, so I love that. One thing that I wanna bring up. As a horseback riding instructor, I always have my students wear a training helmet, and I wear one too, (especially if I'm on a horse I don't know well.) In the past, safety equipment was looked down upon as 'amateurish' and unnecessary. But we all have accidents, amateurs and professionals. A cheap pair of safety goggles is better than spending the afternoon in an emergency room, with a big piece of wood in your cornea. Just a tip that you might want to add to your next vid. Thanks, Buddy! You're awesome!
thank you christopher! totally agree..thanks for sharing..
Love the intro.
Thank you Robert! Praise him for it
If you turn your speed square to the other side of the board it will be easier to cut as you are pushing with your right arm and pulling with your left. Provided you are right handed.
Great tip A!...totally makes sense....i lay it however i lay it down..:) .thanks for sharing!
Finish carpenters definitely go into the 32nds. Not with the math really but when I make cut lists I might say this cut is 12 3/4 strong or shy. Especially when I'm doing division of balusters. If I do the math for my layout with decimals I might get something like 3.8375 on center for my whole row of spindles which is a strong 13/16". If I didn't go into the 32nds then that error accumulates and over a span of 8ft that could add up to my last spindle being a whole half inch off. You just need to know when it matters to chase that kind of precision in your work.
great point strat, yes you're correct, definitely need to be aware when measuring and marking off. thanks for sharing!
18 years old first day as a carpenter yesterday went great i have long way to go though .🙇🏽

I use a lot of these technics daily, I wish the new guy only knew half of this. Most of them show up and read a tape like " 38 and 3 little black lines"
Great video! Keep up the great content!
hey master! so good my friend... thanks so much for sharing!

Thank you Chris appreciate the comment
God bless you my friend. I just came here because I wanted to find a video and see how a Carpenter holds a tape measure. Turns out I'm not crazy! You hold it in your left hand and mark with your right hand, just like me, a "non-carpenter". And I read it upside down, naturally. I would like to join an unruly mob of frustrated laymen, and storm the Stanley factory. Subdue all their left handed managers, and turn their tape measure machines around, so they only make right handed ones! Cheers!
Yes sir. He does. Totally agree. Thanks so much for commenting. So glad it helped.

I used that tape measure when I first started finish carpentry, helped me get familiar with the measurements. Now I I really don’t like them, the measurements are distracting. Eventually your boss is going to hand you his tape measure and ask you to call out some measurements and you should know how to use it. If you get a measurement that An inch and 3/16 and you don’t know your 16th you can say inch and one eighth strong.
hey dex! 1/8th strong........i like ir...thanks for sharing!
Lolll great video and it was entertaining. You have a gr8 personality and you convey the content well. Enjoyed it.
Now for the nitty gritty... your first tape had a black boxed 16 which represents same as the red one ;). What other trade secrets can you give out? I am sure no one will tell!

When you're using the speed square as a cut guide, flip it around so the edge you're squaring to is away from you. This will allow you to run the saw with the blade all the way out without the motor (on a sidewinder) fouling on the square. Also, buy a Swanson brand speed square not some janky home depot junk. They cost like 15 bucks, there's no excuse not to have a proper speed square if you're a working carpenter.
Great suggestion Alfred. Thanks for sharing.
love it!
thank you john!
