You're right , Bread was a super band all contributed great ideas and high quality voices, but don't forget that thanks to the ballads of David Gates they were very successful, and he was also a multi-instrumentalist, he played acoustic guitar, bass, piano and even lead Guitar , however I love the songs of Griffin ! My regards from Lima - Perú .
Back here because Bread is timeless. Mike Gotta drumming on this track is so cool. He was such a good drummer. Jimmy is superb and the guitars are sexy as!!
Fancy Dancer was on the Guitar Man Album, released in 1972. On The Border (Eagles) was released in 1974. For those saying this sounds like On The Border . . . Fancy Dancer was first. Plus, members of Bread were friends with members of the Eagles.
The Guitar Man album, BTW, was the only Bread album that had songwriting contributions from all 4 members in the band plus former member Robb Royer. This was co-written by Griffin and Mike Botts (Botts actually came up with the lick that opens up the song, and in what I consider one of his more inspired moments as the band’s producer, David Gates encouraged James Griffin to get with Mike Botts to write to that lick!)
A lot of musical talent in this group. They just didn't hang around too long. They could craft a song really well. Sadly Jimmy, Mike and Larry have left us way too soon.
Bread did have a boat load of nice, easy listening ballads. But they also had some rockers too. I think in most people's minds they would consider Bread to be in the "soft rock" category. But songs like this would set them apart from the other classical soft rock groups.
It really is a shame and quandry. From what I read, Gates and Griffin were sharing songwriting duties (understanding, both of these guys were both prolific writers). Under the assumption that Gates was leading the band at all times, it's his baby to promote his songs. Bread was one of the few bands who's followers would not expect and hardly accept turmoil in Bread. That being said, it sure was a shame how things evolved during that period of time; though apparently, Gates, Griffin and the rest joined forces near the end. Botts was another giant in that band.
'Guitar Man' was released in 1972. 'On the Border' in 1974. Bread was/is friends with several of the 'Eagles.' They probably toured in the same circles.
Jim Griffin and CF Turner ( BTO ) sound very much alike . In fact both bands cut similar songs in this style . Bread - Fancy Dancer . BTO - Dance Little Gandy Dancer released 1973 .
Life in the fast lane comes to mind but "liar" by Three dog night was what first came to mind... Perhaps the Eagles were influenced by Bread and Bread was influenced by Three Dog Night.... Three great songs came out of it...
i wish someone would make a dvd of this great band called bread so we can all see how great they were better then this bad bad call music today i still play music today long live bread ,
Por que que, em nenhum momento, esses monstros desses operadores de câmera focalizaram, de frente, o cara solando na guitarra? E alguém se lembra de ter visto o baterista em close?
@leeleebaby2100 NO PZ NUNCA TANTO DAVE TIENE OTRO ESTILO CADA UNO CON LO SUYO DAVE LE DIO LA CARACTERISTICA A BREAD DE MELODIAS ROMANTICAS TAN SOLO DE ACUERDO???? GRANDE LOS DOS !!!
Dean also did the "Guitarman" solo in at least one video Ive seen though the Bread songbook I have that was released in the 70's credits Larry Knectel as the author of the solo. So now Im confused?LOL
+Cuzbro100 Knechtel did it on the studio album. Since he was usually playing bass or keys, it was easier to have another guitarist play it in live situations.
+Eduardo De Jesus Yea that whole group had a History. I wrote David a letter from Germany in 74 when they broke up and told him they were good and should work out their differences and get back to "Truckin" Haha James won a grammy-He and Royer- for that Carpenter song "For All We Know" According to the Bread book I have, he wrote the song as Arthur James so while he has the grammy for the song, they never would recognize James Griffin as the Author.
Não tem mesmo como saber. Estes monstros deses operadores de câmera não focalizaram-no, em nenhum momento, em close, e de frente. E nem mesmo, o baterista.
That's the way it happens. Love how they put this together live. best performance by Bread
Has to be the most talented band in rock history. Gates falsetto, James soul. MIke and Larry's talent.
It don't get any better than this my friend. Never saw more talented people in my life on one stage. 🙋
AMEN AND AMEN
Love this! One of my favorites by James Griffin since the 70's!
Jimmy was my favorite of the group....amazing vocals !!!!!!
ME TOO JIMMY IS MY FAVORITE OF THE GROUP !
Exceptional Musicians. High musical sense, feeling, groove, soul and Quality.
RIP James Griffin (guitarist/vocalist), Mike Botts (drummer) & Larry Knetchel (bassist/multi-instrumentalist)

That leaves just David Gates?
@@Winterstick549 and original member, Robb Royer who wrote many Bread songs with James Griffin.

I heard this song when I was 16 (1994) since then I just can't get enough of Bread ballads! I felt like they're under appreciated .
A great singer and a great band
Firstguitar and jimy voice oh! So nice
Was lucky enough to see them in early 1970's At Western NC College
I'm loving the edge in this one! Mike Botts did some great drumming here. It's a pity there's no karaoke track for this one.
A great song from a great band. I sure wish I was in that crowd that night. 🙋❤️
Underrated most definitely
Thanks for posting this unique footage!
Great song. Always loved it.
Jimmy had a harder, more soulful edge than David although he had some really good ballads too! He got the short end of the stick in this band.

Graduated from high school that year, we was jammin' , and I know who my hero's were.
Written by Mike Botts and James Griffin.
Very good band live. Sorry I was too young to see them !
Fancy dancers unite.... great band, rock and roll live on xx
What a fantastic post thanks so much I could not have stumbled upon this at a more perfect time. My day has been made so thanks again!
There's a video somewhere online where Dean Parks plays a smokin' solo at the end of "Mother Freedom."
AMAZING!!!
'Guitar Man' was released in 1972. 'On the Border' in 1974.
Bread was/is friends with several of the 'Eagles.' They probably toured in the same circles.
great song awesome guitar riff
Man, I love that!
r.i.p. jimmy
Fantástica!
Jeff Kahl, you brought up an excellent point about this tune's similarity to The Eagles' tune, On the Borderline.
Damn good

Fancy Dancer.. 👍👍👏👏👏👏👏👏🎸💞🎸
Grouse song!! I groove every time I hear it.

@@davidsparks8689 I agree wholeheartedly!! I'd buy a DVD of their live shows like this one. They were amazing.
@presto35 Indeed it is. Dean toured on and off with bread between 72 and 78.
Dean Parks is sooo good
damn this could've almost been an Eagles tune! killer!

Por la ptque linda version
yeah
I love Gates jacket...
i never though that it was Jimmy who sang it and not Mike Bott
Jimmy kind of sounds like Bill Champlain but less bombastic. Very effective!
Jimmy was to 'these' guys..... what 'Dan Hartman', was to the Edgar Winter Group.

Oh ok, thanks. It was a great- and unique solo. That solo made that song. Put the feeling to it.
+Cuzbro100 Many people knew Larry as an amazing, genius keyboardist, but Larry was an incredible bassist and guitarist too!
+Eduardo De Jesus Yea that whole group had a History. I am Jimmy's cousin. Larry did the guitar man solo. Yes.
I have been watching a lot of Bread videos, so I keep getting these ads for bras for small breasted women, why?
You need Adblock.
Who's on solo? I want to know his name
Não tem mesmo como saber. Estes monstros deses operadores de câmera não focalizaram-no, em nenhum momento, em close, e de frente. E nem mesmo, o baterista.
The guy on lead/solo is Dean Parks en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dean_Parks
Blues Power it's James Griffin !
@@JoseOliveira-io2qv Dean Parks.... check on wikipedia to learn more about him.
This made me think of "almost famous.:
There has to be better copies. This one is so blurry
who's the '5th' member up there on lead guitar?
Hey drumdude !! The lead guitarist is the instrumental wizard Dean Parks, who played lead on Gates solo LP's.
+David Merrill Gill (Bonzai) I saw Dean Parks play with David Gates when he was the opening act on Olivia Newton-John's 1974 tour.
I think that's Dean Parks.
yeah this almost sounds like a clone to On The Border
Last call to dump
Ah yes. The good old days when you had great music and you didn't need all that light show backup crap to cover for the lack of musical talent.
Who´s playing lead guitar ?
Dean Parks.
A session musician from LA.
Nice first guitar
Good thing Tom Petty didn't come up with this riff......
