No one writes and performs songs like that anymore. Those were the days never to be forgotten. Such voice, such lyrics that really mean something and touches you deeply. Songs that can make you smile and even cry...takes you to places. Congratulations David on a brilliant and successful carrier, your music will live forever!

I grew up with David, loved all the music he wrote. It brought so many heart felt memories and breakups to my own life, indeed many moments I wept because of the love I felt for someone from my heart, but I usually got stonewalled by the shallowness of another's heart, I should say brain cuz they usually don't feel real love in their hearts.
Thank you David for all the memories since the 60s. You were placed on this earth to bring peace with your music & an overwhelming feeling of one's heart even if it has been forgotten from those with a barbwire heart & soul.

I'm a Latino person and let me tell you this: David Gates songs hit me hard. I have never listened a musician, songwriter so prolific and very humble at the same time like David gates. Each chord at each song is so touching. There's a song that still make me cry when I listen to it. Everything I own! It seems written for me and my grandma! She raised me. She was my mom and dad. She died several years ago. I remember her everytime I listen this tune. Thanks David Gates for such wonderful music!

Two words describe Mr. Gates -- sheer brilliance. The skill and patience to make the incredibly beautiful music he did, without computers and synthesizers, is simply amazing. I put him at the same level as Tom Scholz of Boston. It's unfortunate that kids growing up in the last three decades missed out on these kinds of groups, musicians and songs as part of their culture. I'm thankful that I was able to experience it.

Amazing, Tom Scholz could "Bostonify" If or Guitar Man! David Gates singing Hollyann would be interesting too. It's nice to see someone else who appreciates that talents of both. Tom said he had to deal with some of the lowest forms of life that got dressed and went to work in the morning in the record business. He said he was also earning money for all sorts of people.

David Gates was happily married with children when he wrote most to all of his beautiful love songs (currently married over 60 years). It's one thing to understand love but another on how to write a love song -David not only wrote beautiful music (mostly just with his voice and guitar) but his lyrics contain words of someone who understands love from it's most powerful place of being unconditional to the deep heartbreak of 'wanting' of taking someone for granted. His music truly is healing and heart breaking - there is a reality to it a purity and innocence not found in todays music. Because of his genius -his heart/love those of us who appreciate his music will never be the same. Thank you David!

If you stand back and look at David as a singer, songwriter and producer he should be right up there with the greats. As a person, he made it through a career in a business that usually leaves a wake of marriages, children and stints in rehab in its wake. David was able to manage success not only in his professional life but in his personal life as well. Hi is 80 yrs old and I regret having never seen him perform live. I have tickets to see America live during their 50th anniversary tour. Then hopefully McCartney.

David, I'd play your songs with Bread on 8 track cruising down the road on a date with my high school sweetheart in 1971 and 72. Make it with you and It don't matter to me were actually my favorites, especially on the dates. It was a long time ago I was taken back with your diversity in writing. Some folksy, some cross over Country to Pop, and some older stuff like the Pop Hit for Leslie Gore, It's my party.
I came to tears most recently when I saw you in a You Tube video on the Glen Campbell special, watching both your solos and then you pairing with Glen is when I really came apart.

I managed a record store in Florida in the late seventies after graduating high school. I was Still in community college, when an elderly couple from BC came in and noticed I was playing “Best of Bread” on the store sound system. They told me that when their son was a boy, he and David were friends, and David would come over and play guitar and sing with their son, in their basement! They were so proud of the success he had achieved, and thrilled to tell me the story! I can’t remember their name, or the town, but have always remembered the story! I was a David Gates and Bread fan long before that. But, I think that’s my favorite anecdotal story about him! Awesome talent and great voice! A great person also as far as I know! I hoped that someday I would get the chance to meet him, and tell him that story! I wonder if he would know who It was, that I met, and remember them, and their son. 😊😎👌🤔

David Gates made some of the sweetest mellow pop of the 70's and could rock surprisingly hard, too! I consider him one of the great pop/rock melody composers, up there with Paul McCartney and Brian Wilson. Saw him play to a packed auditorium in Australia in 1998 and his smooth tenor voice sounded just the same as it did back in Bread.

I think he was a geat ballad writer and a great singer. But not fair to compare him to maca or Brian Wilson. They are the two greatest musicians, song writers of rock. Compare him to James Taylor. Taylor was great. And gates was just as good. Better song writer. Gates is however in a class all by himself. I'm not sure any of the balladeers of the 70s wrote and sang as smoothly as he did.

Towards the end of the video I thought David’s wife added tremendously to the conversation! Adding about how their kids were so protective of their father and the story about how they didn’t want to talk much about their Dad! Very interesting!

I've listened to a LOT of music in my life & have very wide tastes, but Bread are probably my all-time favourites. The integrity shows in their music. And David Gates comes across, in this & other interviews I've seen, as genuine. Thank you to him - & to the poster of this video, which offers interesting insights into the group.

David Gates had the softist voice,as did Karen Carpenter. He wrote the most beautiful songs and lyrics ever. One after another . He was as soft spoken, in person, as his songs.I miss him deeply ! Thank you David and may you rest peacefully ! A fellow musician, Jim 💕

@@jimhack7439 David is still alive and well. He just turned 82 last month. I think you're thinking of the other three members in bread, who, sadly, have passed away. David and also Robb Royer (co-founding member of bread, but who left after their third album, 'Manna') are still alive and well.

I got to meet David Gates after a Bread concert in Chicago.
Friday, January 28, 1972 Bob Borjanovich, a friend of mine and I drove to the Arie Crown Theater at McCormick Place on Lake Shore Drive in Chicago, IL to see BREAD with David Gates in concert. I live 40 miles north of Chicago. After the BREAD concert on January 28, 1972 with the original line up of David Gates, Jimmy Griffin, Mike Botts and Larry Knechtel, they walked off stage.
Security wasn’t as tight then as it is now so I walked down toward the stage and asked one of the roadies with a satin BREAD jacket on where I could find David Gates. He told me they went to eat at the Lake Shore Holiday Inn. I knew where that was. I had my wedding reception in the revolving restaurant called the Pinnacle on the 33rd floor where they were eating. We walked into the restaurant and the Host told us we weren’t dressed properly in ties and coats. We also didn’t have reservations. I told the host I just want to go talk to that guy for a minute as I was pointing to the band at their table. He still said NO. I told Bob, “Let’s go across the street and get some burgers while we’re waiting for BREAD to finish eating.”
We waited about 30 minutes and went back into the hotel. I walked up to the desk and boldly asked which room David Gates was in like I was one of his friends. The guy at the desk told me, “Room 329.” I asked him if I could call him first and he said to go around the desk and in the hall is a “house phone, just dial 329.” I couldn’t believe he told me but hey….I’m too close to David Gates to blow it now.
I picked up the house phone, dialed 329 and some guy said, “Hello.”
I said “Hello, who is this?” He said, “Mike, who is this?” I told him my name was Rick and I saw their concert tonight and wanted to tell you how awesome it was.” He said, “Thanks” and that he had to go.
I told Bob, “Let’s just take the elevator up to the room. I’m too close now.”
We got to room 329 and I knocked on the door.
David Gates opened the door and all he had on was his “Fruit Of the Loom” briefs. I said, “Dave?” And he said, “Yeah.” I said, “WOW, I’ve wanted to meet you for years.
I told him I hate to bother him so I’ll make this quick….”Could you show me how to play the first 2 chords for ‘Make It With You’ and the first 4 chords for ‘IF’ if I draw a fretboard and strings on each arm?” He agreed. I drew them and he showed me where to place my fingers and I drew dots with my pen on the spots to place my fingers. I asked him to sign my ticket stub and he did. He was very nice and humble. I went home and tried the chords on my acoustic Ovation guitar and it sounded just like David Gates playing.
Unfortunately I didn’t own a camera back then so no photo.

This interview is so great and seeing his wife besides him discussing their life was so interesting. Glad to see David looking so healthy and having a good family life. A great example of a pop star who can look back with fondness at his career. Sad to hear of the passing of the other members of Bread but the music lives forever! And what music it was!

Evidently at that point she hadn't met his Dad! Would have loved to have been a fly on that wall when she finally met the man that was to be her father-in-law! 😲

Although a Beatle fan first, and I note the Beatle catalogue climbs to almost 1000 songs, I hold The Gates-Griffin compositions as endearing and heartfelt as Lennon-McCartney. A special place for Bread and there touchstone performances . Simply stellar!

Absolutely agree with you, Gerard...David and James were so brilliant together, musically...just like John and Paul. Masters at their songwriting and singing craft. I'd have so loved it if David had a bit more time to talk about his working relationship and/or his personal relationship with James, though. I thought that was about to happen, when David first mentioned poor Mike becoming sick with colon cancer, and then started to talk a little bit about James' and his non-stop smoking, which ultimately and most likely led to his horrible diagnosis and untimely death from lung cancer. I know that David and James didn't always see eye to eye in a personal capacity, but they were magic together, musically speaking. I miss James so much.
