      @@hardave DeepL does off the rails very often as well. A lot of people don't realize this because they don't know Japanese to begin with. Both are awful very often. Always. Cross reference. If the result is very different between both then something very wrong

      @@JasperTV I think comparing just syllables isn't quite fair here. Consider "strengths": it's a pretty long word, but only one syllable. But I think it's justified being that long, because it contains a lot more phonemes than Japanese syllables allow. Transcribed into Katakana it would be something like ストレングズス.

      I think "Cofee" gets a pass because reading that verbally, has no difference from the correct version, it's only failing grammatically but not verbally
      whereas "Coffe" would be pronounced "Co - fe" instead of "Co - fii"

      @@danielantony1882 Nah - 志 is very interesting actually, one of only 3 five-mora in everyday reading. It means something along the lines 'aspirations' or 'intention'. It's a pretty interesting kanji. It's the nominalization of the verb 'kokorozasu' and it absorbs okurigana turning it into a four-mora to a five-mora.

      Another similarly compact word (using a common kanji) is 承る, read as 'uketamawaru', which is keigo for 'to listen' / 'to understand'.

      It's a product of their "alphabet" being syllabary.
      There aren't very many consonant sounds ending Japanese words, especially compared to _Ingurishu._

      For the record, “o” is only used if the word ends in T or D. Usually, they’d put “u” at the end, like “stoppu”, but the kana corresponding to “tu” and “du” are pronounced “tsu” and “zu”, respectively, so they go with “to” or “do” instead.
      But yeah, except N, the Japanese language doesn’t have any solo consonants, so they aren’t used to ending a word in a consonant. For English, it’d be like trying to pronounce a word that starts with “ng”.

    Its funny that the girls usually comment on how weird English spelling is. At least in English when learning to write, people say "sound it out" to try and help with the spelling. When I tried to learn Kanji it was "just fucking memorize it shit-breath" and then "got that one? Good, only 1999 more to go"

      As a non-native english speaker (german), I can assure you that english spelling is just insane.
      When you have the hiragana for the readings of a kanji, you know exactly how it pronounced. (except for pitch accent of course)
      Seeing an english word spelled on the other hand is nearly useless in comparison lol ^^
