It's fascinating to hear all these behind the scenes experience of the developers, the teams and the decision making that each project goes through. I think you're doing a fantastic service to the game development industry and gamers alike, and I feel lucky to have the opportunity to learn from what you do. I thoroughly enjoyed this documentary, thank you so much for all your hard work!
I am so excited to see this finally released! I really wish there had been more discussion around the development of Tomb Raider Underworld and the evolution of Ascension, which was going to be the true narrative "third" game for that version of Lara. All the while it seemed like Crystal was trying to break through with Downfall and then Underworld ended up barely making it past the finish line. The last level in particular feels almost primitive in comparison to the quality of the rest of the game. I loved the insight into Arkane's canceled titles like Return to Ravenholm and The Crossing and was hoping for similar insight with Underworld and Ascension (and maybe more exploration of how Crystal worked with Eidos Montreal through Shadow). This was still a great documentary though, love you guys! Can't wait to see what comes next.
This was great and it's good to hear you guys haven't given up on your mission to get a full Legacy of Kain doc made. It must be incredibly to get the right people to talk about it.
Really enjoyed this! As someone who has been in the industry for 21 years, and been playing games for 34, I cant help but think that CD has been part of who I became as a dev :)
Whiplash was an insane blast from the past. Thats a 20 year old memory you just unlocked for me. I likely would have gone the rest of my life without ever once thinking about that game. God damn, I remember it looking perfect, high fidelity. Memory is strange.
Thank you for this amazing documentary. It was a pleasure to get immersed into the world of Crystal Dynamics. So much history. I have the feeling that the gaming industry opened up to you and sees the value in your productions. I'm sure anyone involved in CD enjoyed watching this as much as anyone who's peeking in from the outside.
I remember when I first saw trailers for the Tomb Raider reboot. It instantly went from a franchise that I cared nothing about and kind of looked down on to a series that I'm now producing a full cinematic series from. Thank you Crystal Dynamics! You've down some truly amazing work!
i gotta give props for how professionally made these documentaries are, it feels like a tv show. i also like how you do docs on how certain games were designed, it might end up helping me out a bit as I work on my own game
Great documentary and so very good to hear that Crystal Dynamics is really aware of the fans wanting Legacy of Kain back. Let's hope that will turn out to become a real thing in the coming years.
This was a wonderful documentary and the best Soul Reaver ad I've ever seen. Nothing builds hype quite like hearing brilliant people talk about things they love.
I've been following Legacy of Kain since the launch of Blood Omen in 1996, and I just learned that Amy no longer wanted to work on more Soul Reaver games and wanted to switch to Tomb Raider. I was always under the impression that Legacy of Kain was left in the dust because of big wigs trying to get more money out of Lara. Interesting. Also very clear where Uncharted came from when she left for Naughty Dog. I can only imagine how much better Tomb Raider would have gotten, had they given her the chance. Amazing work on this, it's so nice to see anything about Legacy of Kain these days, between this and the recent survey, we're eating good.
Danny and Team, I *loved* this one. You all outdid yourselves with this introspection of Crystal Dynamics’ history and legacy. I’m excited for the new Tomb Raider that was announced to be in developement couple years ago watching this. Just wanted to congratulate the team on this doc. I enjoyed it a lot!
These have been my favorite documentaries for the last couple of years. Sometimes, I'm in a certain mood and I just want to watch something relaxing like this!
Great Doc guys!!! I LOVE the Legacy of Kain series. In the survey, I specifically requested a Remaster of the 1st Soul Reaver, with an option, unlockable after clearing the game once, to replay it with all the cut content restored, we NEED the full version of that masterpiece!
The thing about the Avengers game is really still visible in the game to this date; the first few missions are very linear and story focussed, and play like an amazing singleplayer story. Then you get to the ship and it all just falls apart.
Gex and Tomb Raider were, in my eyes, defining games for Crystal Dynamics. I am 30 now but I grew up playing Gex and Tomb Raider on the PSX demos. Thank You to all the devs for making these games. Much appreciated for making what was part of my childhood and I thank my family for having a playstation 😌
Noclip does amazing work! I love how you got the devs to show you the old design documents from all these games, the attention to detail in the way the editing is made is excellent!
Super solid doc. Always love your work. My grandma's love for Tomb Raider is kinda what the gaming history of my family is built on, fascinating to see the stories behind it all.
That Soul Reaver 1 footage looks so clean, was that the PC port? Also, lovely documentary Noclip!!! It's always heartwarming to see Soul Reaver being talked about, I have a lot of hope on the future revival, we just have to wait :)
Whoever is responsible for putting up the plate that said "Lord Zoda - Supreme Predator, Dark-Sai Dominion" deserves a raise. That was a wonderful visual joke!
My absolute favorite takeaway from this documentary is that Gex is a unit of measurement. Also enjoyed the bit about Amy Hennig really wanting to work on Tomb Raider, being told "no," and then going off to help create Uncharted (spitefully, I'd like to imagine). Man, Avengers bums me out. There is some weird stuff about it (such as releasing as the movies wrapped up a 10 year story arc and being a live service game without the variety to support such a thing), but ultimately I really enjoyed it and think that it's a legit good game. I feel like people weren't willing to give it a fair shot and that's really disappointing because I'm sure that it'll be killed before it reaches its true potential.
The tech behind Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver was so ahead of its time. All of that innovation came from an underrated game that many didn't play. I don't know a lot of people who know about this game.
What an epic undertaking this documentary was, two hours and still feels like a lot of stories left to tell! My only regret is not hearing from Troels Folmann on making those innovative contextual soundtracks for the earlier Tomb Raider games.
I love how they close things out with 'what's most requested'? He answers without hesitation, "Hands down...Legacy of Kain." I'm glad that the IP, though long-dormant, has remained in the mind of so many. I had completely missed out on the original when it was on PC, and with current GOG offerings have been so excited to experience it. Wonderful doc, and glad they're still passionate there all this time later!
The way they were talking about how the original pitch for the game was for it to be a classic linear singleplayer game like TR makes me think that Square Enix pushed them to turn it into a soulless shitty live service game just because that's what Square considers a potential moneymaker. It's really sad to think of what we could have had if it weren't for Square Enix's bullshit, but at least Crystal Dynamics aren't owned by SE anymore.
I loved Tomb Raider Anniversary and the reboot, hope it’s going well for Crystal! And of course the documentary is top notch as well. It’s great to hear from the different branches and generations of developers. Even if it‘s a bit fluffy I think that the studio deserves praise for what they did well.
My dad worked for Ripcord Games in the 90s working on a lot of 3DO games, and as a function I played a TON of Crystal Dynamics games. Especially Crash n Burn and Gex
Crash 'n Burn is so underrated, seeing it was what made me purchase the 3D0 for the obscene asking price and I wasn't disappointed. I may have played Road Rash and Need for Speed more but CnB was great.
@@timmturner yeah I definitely had more time into Road Rash and NFS but Crash n Burn was extremely unique. Kind of wish there was something more similar today.
@@danjennings5068 me and my best friend used to have a contest on NFS to see who could flip a car and land ass up...I won the first time with the testarossa which landed on the taillights and was doing a little spin dance and it was glorious. Actual physics was a new thing in console gaming
Love your videos! I know you guys did a series about the development of the Outer Worlds, but I think a video that covers Obsidian’s entire history would be very interesting to see.
You know you've got a good doco when 2hrs later it finishes, and you crave more, what an awesome insight into Core/crystal dynamics/silicon knights/embracer/ n what nots history, thus is an incredibly interesting watch, I've known the majority of these facts but it's great to see everything in one big doco extravaganza, colossal thanks for your work putting this, together in one big watch
Great documentary. My favourite part was the deep dive into the production process shifting from the waterfall model to the vertical slice model. Some great points there about the pros and cons of both.
Thank you Noclip so very much for this great video! Those who grew up playing Gex like myself really enjoyed this. I gotta say that I will have to play the newer Tomb Raider games now.
I really liked the Tomb raider 2013 reboot. It's a shame they didn't bring it with the whole trilogy. Only the first game is memorable to me. Great documentary as always, you're doing a great job.
Agreed. Different decisions like the initial Xbox exclusivity in Rise and dropping Shadow on Eidos to jump on Avengers really made the trilogy fall apart. Hopefully one day we'll get a Survivor Trilogy remaster that adds cohesiveness to the trilogy.
There's an interview with Rhianna Pratchett that sheds more light to the writing process of TR 2013 and Rise. As it turns out, a lot of creative freedom is taken away, and so many decisions have to be made from the people on top, I think that's why as good as Rise was it didn't really bring much new stuff to the table, and Shadow.. well.. has insultingly bad writing & even more forgettable gameplay.
Gex was one of the first games I was able to play on the Playstation. I remember it well because in the beginning, Playstation games tried to attract attention by having a different presentation, with polygons, effects and everything, but the gameplay was not used to be very deep or fun. Gex on the other hand had a tremendous focus on gameplay, as well as providing the technical qualities expected of a PSX or 3DO game. I really have very fond childhood memories of this game. We were always waiting for Gex's next line of dialogue. Literally, we were waiting to see what he was going to say in each situation >D.
In regards to to Tomb Raider's new design approach: I'm not saying the "vertical slice" development doesn't work, but I would say it's un-natural for creative processes. You don't bake a cake one slice at a time. You don't write a book one chapter at a time (really). I suppose you could, and it may help inform you along the way, but it's a lot of work, as I'm sure many teams have learned, and moreso, I don't think it's an improvement over other creative processes. The "normal" pre-viz, production, post, is linear (in line with how our brains work) and while it isn't any easier or faster, I'd say it allows for organic development and creative exploration (even after pre-viz) for the whole project. The thing/product in question is being molded like clay. Additive, subtractive processes. It's a painting. It's art. There's a lot of discovery and exploration that should be part of the process. The team still made a great product, and in the end, video games are a commercial art, but I instinctively cringe whenever I hear "vertical slice". It's a way to quantify art and process and get buy in/support early: "Our whole game will be like this!" Productizing, commercializing art at the earliest stage. And perhaps it's a necessary evil of development, but I don't want teams to lose sight of the "how" in their craft. There's no wrong way to make stuff, but don't fall for any mirages/gimmicks that only seem like they make development better - in some cases, process actually causes more work. As always, great doc, though I wish Pandemonium got more screen time XD
This documentary was incredibly well researched and presented. Everyone involved should all be very proud of themselves, because I imagine a lot of work went into it and I really appreciate when things are done properly. A true labour of love as opposed to just stitching a bunch of info together and calling it a day, which always shows in the finished product.
Awh thanks Danny and the no clip team. as a 46 year old guy you are single handedly giving me my dream content. Beautifully edited and lovingly created. Thank you x
Awesome job with this documentary, Crystal Dynamics was part of my first steps into gaming, and here it shows why I remember those games with whit love. I really hope to see a me LOK game and maybe anew Gex game would be great.
Agreed. As far as titles go, I think Legacy of Kain: Last Act of Defiance would work well for it. It would even the names out--there've been two Blood Omens and two Soul Reavers but only one Defiance--and it'd clearly denote it as the final entry.
This was great, I'm a bit too young to have fond memories of their earlier games but I really think the tomb raider reboot in 2013 was phenomenal. I was so gripped by it, so brutal and dark right from the off. Really love the way they reinvented Lara, made her more believable and likable. Can't wait for the new one.
The reboot was awesome but let’s not shit talk other Lara’s (:! Every version of Lara has touched millions and millions of fans across the world and all deserve the praise not just reboot. 💖

Gex, Pandemonium, Legacy Of Kain, and The Unholy War were such great games
Really enjoyed this! As someone who has been in the industry for 21 years, and been playing games for 34, I cant help but think that CD has been part of who I became as a dev :)
Whiplash was an insane blast from the past. Thats a 20 year old memory you just unlocked for me. I likely would have gone the rest of my life without ever once thinking about that game.
God damn, I remember it looking perfect, high fidelity. Memory is strange.
Nothing quite as cosy as sitting down to watch a new noclip doc. Stellar work.
I didn't knew Glen Schofield also worked at Crystal Dynamics. He's a wonderful guy.
Danny and Team,
I *loved* this one.
I second this, a remaster of the 1st Soul Reaver is well overdue!
The thing about the Avengers game is really still visible in the game to this date; the first few missions are very linear and story focussed, and play like an amazing singleplayer story. Then you get to the ship and it all just falls apart.
I've always been a big fan of Crystal Dynamics. I would've never guessed we'd get one of these for them. Very happy.
I've never played a single LoK game but that ending managed to get me very hyped for whatever they do with the franchise.
"Lara is key to the franchise, so nailing her is the most important part" XD XD XD
Love these guys hope they bring gex, and LoK back and REALLY interested in the new Perfect Dark to see what they do on the project..
This was such an amazing watch. Thank you so much No Clip! You are telling the stories that will inspire future developers.
What a heartwarming journey. I did not like Avengers, but loved Guardians. They always rebound.
All I can say to these guys is THANK YOU! These games brought me so much joy as a child.
I can’t wait for them to do remasters of Tomb Raider, Legacy Of Kain, and Gex!
Yes, they've shown the pc version.
Oh man. I was really burned about dragging my ass into work today. This will help deeply. Y'all have made my entire morning.
These guys are legends. As a PC/PS1 player in my youth they were always one of the most exciting developers around.
Amazing documentary as always guys! Thank you for this, Crystal is one of my favorite studios :)
Crystal Dynamics devs, thank you for all the great childhood memories! Especially Soul Reaver was so damn good!
They tried really hard not to make the Avengers sound like a complete disaster that it was.
There was definitely strong denial when talking about that game. He looked so uncomfortable.
The way they were talking about how the original pitch for the game was for it to be a classic linear singleplayer game like TR makes me think that Square Enix pushed them to turn it into a soulless shitty live service game just because that's what Square considers a potential moneymaker. It's really sad to think of what we could have had if it weren't for Square Enix's bullshit, but at least Crystal Dynamics aren't owned by SE anymore.
i feel the disaster is was it was the fault of someone at the top of the chain
Square not just crystal...
It wasn't great, but it wasn't a disaster. Way to condense it in a false way.
Absolutely brilliant journey. Thank you for your hard work in telling these stories.
NGL I came here for LoK news. But NoClip can always be trusted to make the best documentaries. Such an interesting doc about an incredible studio
Gex is truly the Silent Hill of platformers.
Love your videos! I know you guys did a series about the development of the Outer Worlds, but I think a video that covers Obsidian’s entire history would be very interesting to see.
Second. They’ve definitely had a massive cultural impact on the industry
I was so immersed in Soul Reaver at the time. The game was so atmospheric.
I'd put it at the top of my list for a remake.
What a fantastic video... the amount of effort and quality is astounding. Thanks Noclip!
Thank you Noclip so very much for this great video! Those who grew up playing Gex like myself really enjoyed this. I gotta say that I will have to play the newer Tomb Raider games now.
Thanks!
Finally got around to finishing this doc. Thanks for telling these stories.
Been waiting for this one! I love you guys!
Sorry for the wait, we wanted to get as many games in here as possible and some took a lot of work!
Hell yeah, Noclip team! I always love to see a new doc drop.
I loved this doc and hearing the story of Crystal Dynamics. Thanks noclip for putting this together.
CD's one of my favorite studios, very excited to watch this one.
Even though I don't play their games, it is great to see a studio make the 30 year mark. This year we hit 30 as well :)
Awh thanks Danny and the no clip team. as a 46 year old guy you are single handedly giving me my dream content. Beautifully edited and lovingly created. Thank you x
4:26 made me burst out laughing. I love that Lord Zodak was given a name card as if he were an interviewee
Great docco, thanks! Excellent to see devs loving their work and making great games.
Awesome job with this documentary, Crystal Dynamics was part of my first steps into gaming, and here it shows why I remember those games with whit love. I really hope to see a me LOK game and maybe anew Gex game would be great.
Amy Hennig needs to revive LoK for one more game to give it the proper conclusion it deserves. One of the best series ever.
Agreed. As far as titles go, I think Legacy of Kain: Last Act of Defiance would work well for it. It would even the names out--there've been two Blood Omens and two Soul Reavers but only one Defiance--and it'd clearly denote it as the final entry.
Love how he mentioned that he actually created the Soul Reaver. Legendary...
"Puppies to the Rescue" is one of my favourite childhood game. So much fond memories !
This was so interesting to watch! I loved hearing about all of the work that went into these games and building the studio. It's my dream to be a part of it one day :3
I loved this! Thanks for grilling them about revisiting Legacy of Kain 😅
ゲームの進化も頭打ちに思える時もあるけど、こうやってクリエイターの人達が切磋琢磨して新しい表現を作り出してるの見ると、まだまだワクワクが止まらない
Always been a fan of Crystal Dynamics, Gex on 3DO was my first experience with them but Soul Reaver on Dreamcast was my favorite title from them.
Another interesting, informative and impressive video from the Noclip team! 🙌
