- I have owned this radio for a while now, but is the X6100 really a ten watt radio?

Totally agree with your summation Morten. When I bought mine I initially agonised as to whether I should have gone for the IC-705 instead, but now, some 6 weeks in I think this radio is a perfect blend of price, features, performance, size and rugged build. Loving this radio more and more each time I use it. Cheers ZL2VTH
It’s just the right amount of radio for the price.
No 60 meters? LOL. Good to see the radio delivers on it's promise. Thanks for the test.
I forgot 60…
I rate this video 10/10 Watts.
Fun to see it deliver so close to it's promised capacity
I was actually hoping for some surprises, but no surprises at all.
Great little radio Mort! as well as a great little video! 73
Thanks!
Awesome, thanks for testing it. It's still no.1 on my HF list to buy. :)
It's not a half bad radio. I love it!
I would guess the AM carrier was lower than 10W, as when modulated - the peak power must be higher than 10W. Perhaps it's a 20W PA? In that case SSB should also be 20W.
That would be my guess as well, but I actually revisited the topic and another video and it was 10W on CW as well.
Fun to see!
Thanks!
Nice presentation and review 🎉 subscribed..73
Thanks!
I have this radio too and like you like it for the same reasons!
It’s a fantastic little thing, and it’s also a platform for experimenting. The fact that it runs Linux is a great feature.
@@LB0FI Oh yes and that we can experiment with the Alt version just from an SDCard no need for a permanent install. I live in hope that they will one day enable the CAT control and Audio via Bluetooth and maybe inbuilt JS8Call for EmComms then it would nearly perfect!
@@Stewart-HA5RV Check out the R1CBU firmware. CAT control works now.
@@LB0FI Oh I downloaded the latest a few days back but didn't realise that - I just tested the onboard FT8 so far which is F-ing awesome! 😁
Fine radio! Is a plastic blue box a 3D print? Have you a model for printing?
Yes it is, you can find it over on Thingiverse, and I have even made a video on that specific cage.
@@LB0FI Thank you! de RA0ZIJ
Wouldn’t it be better to test CW output power? Or did you test this with a 1khz sine wave on the audio input? Not sure if AM carrier with 0% modulation gives a meaningful result. So it might do in fact more than 10W.😉
It would be better, but I don’t have a key at the moment though. You’re not the first to point out errors in my methodology though. I might have to revisit this later.
@@LB0FI The super pixie is waiting! We must build it and do at least one QSO to make Gil proud and a good excuse to get a key on prime day.😉
@@labcat73 My Pixie is still on it’s way unfortunately. I will probably just finish up my 3D printed key. It’s always nice to have a tuning device handy.
Does it do fm? That would give a true representation of carrier power output. AM is set up to the have the carrier at 25% of total peak envelope power. If it's doing a 10w AM carrier and maintains that if you modulate it, you'll be doing more than 10w.
For example, an Icom 7300 has a 25w AM carrier. When you speak you get modulation peaks up to 100w
@@K4AX It does do FM, and it also does CW. There's an update in my next video that premieres on Friday.
That's my rig!
You’re the reason I bought the X6100 Steve!
@@LB0FI Its been a fun ride for sure!
If you're measuring 10W AM carrier, then this is really a 40W radio at 100% modulation. Something's not quite right.
Good video demo Morton. I just suspect that this rig is set internally way too high on AM. It should be 1/4 carrier of full rated output. 73
Xiegu specs AM at 2.5W. Testing FM and/or CW would have been interesting.
I wonder if the power meter is looking at average power, not PEP. Average power is a better predication of load on the battery. Testing with a 100% modulating tone on AM also would have been interesting.
Thanks for commenting guys! You are not the only ones that have pointed out errors in my methodology. I will release a new video soon.
10 watts is good!! 20 watts is better! That's why I have a G90. 😊
The G90 is one of those radios I regret selling. It’s a fantastic radio as well.
@@LB0FI For the money spent, it is the best out there for portable. You can buy others and they will be better but they'll be 3x or more expensive. Icom and elecraft come to mind.
lol guess what I’m buying 😂
Probably not an 891…
@@LB0FI that internal battery screams “take me to the beach” 😂😂😂
@@COASTALWAVESWIRES Only five watts on the internal battery, but there are ways around that.
@@LB0FI I found that way around it, that’s why I’m buying it
It’s called R1CBU
