Activating A BRAND NEW PARK in Sweden
Since you were operating from the car, would a magnetic mount on the car roof been another option? The magic arm was very interesting!
Yes, a magmount is a very good option when operating mobile. My plan was actually not to operate mobile, but my original park was filled up with something the non-hams calls a “Christmas market”. And since I didn’t bring anything to sit on I ended up in the car.
FYI this setup works excellent on JS8Call as well. No CAT control needed for me, as I only use a 40m NVIS antenna configuration. Now... can this little radio work with Winlink... 😎
I use one of the super clamps from my GoPro git stuff. Pretty close to the same. Thanks for the video Morton! 73
I am also going to try just using the clamp, but the arm gives a couple of extra mounting options.
It seems a bit big and slightly heavy that mount. So I guess is for drive-in's mostly. But then one of those mounts you put under one of the car wheels seems much more efficient. No buttons to turn when the frost is biting. No parts that will get frozen solid if there is both snow / sleet and cold :-)
It is about a kilo. I have had heavier stuff in my backpack. I also have a drive on mount, which is nice, but that is for fiberglass or carbon fiber masts and wire antennas. It's all about adapting to the situation.
Nice! I have been using a spike antenna since last winter and was wandering how to solve this! Thank you!
You're welcome!
Ice fishing anchors would also do well as I have drilled into some strong frozen ground with them. Using a portable drill with the ice anchor adapter will of course make it easier.
Absolutely, but this is two fold. I have a lot of professional experience with super clamps and magic arms. Secondly, this was what was on hand and easy to adapt to M10.
"Spain is in Europe" 🤣
It's not my first rodeo :)
I'll have to get one of these.
You absolutely do buddy!
Duuuude I wish we had this WX here... 💯😍👍
It's gonna get warm and wet tomorrow.
Great idea, Morten. It works great for any location, too. 👍
Not every location as I discussed. This was actually my third park trying to find something that would work.
I wanted to put my µSDR on FT8 but didn't want to deal with not having schematics, putting in time on a maybe, spending time on a mode that I only use from time to time, and isolation and ground loop issues between various devices. My solution was to acoustically couple the µSDR to my smartphone. Just like the old FAX machines. I made a video about it and it's a fast and dirty method. I don't know if UA-cam allows pasting a link in a comment section however if you search for my video by name I'm sure you will find it. The name of the video I posted is: "Acoustic coupling a µSDR transceiver to work FT8 on a smartphone or tablet." Good job on the cables Morten and thanks for providing the info on hard wiring in the audio cables. FT8 isn't the most pleasant sound HI HI. 73,
@@samradioman3843 There is a video on my channel as well. It's best to 10ohm load amplifier and around 30ohm to match earpieces etc. George
what antennae do you use with this. what would i have to buy to get one of these operational?
As most things in ham radio the short answer is: "it depends", but let's dive into this a little bit further though. This radio does not have a built in tuner, so something resonnant would be useful. Also, since it's QRP I would go for something that's efficient. A dipole, a quarter wave vertical or a dipole would be good starters. If you would like something multi banded I would go for an end fed halfwave.
OMG I've been fighting this thing for 2 days until you said "flip the usb cable around to use it".
It's not so obvious, but it does the trick. Happy to help!
I've been using a rybakov this year that I built using a 31-foot fiberglass telescopic pole, a 4:1 unun that I wound, and 6 16.5 ft ground radials. It works great, and I made a lot of contacts with it. Recently, I put together another one using a 25-foot telescopic stainless steel whip and a commercially made 4:1 unun, using the same ground radials. I've been thinking of changing the ground radials to either adding a few more long wires to the bunch or trying a raised radial system, which would have to be tuned. I really like the rybakov configuration. 73. Joe from Chicago (I love the Bears hoodie you're wearing). Go, Bears!
So cool that people can market and sell a product like that, which works, and comes with a 3D printed case 😊
It's the true spirit of open source and ham radio.
Ali express? No thanks. Love my (tr)uSDX though.
Where did you get yours?
Thanks for comparing it to the Baofeng, LOL
You bet! It’s the universal size unit for ham radio.
Nice work!
Thanks!
The (tr)uSDX is smaller than the speaker, the battery, the common mode choke. I guess the space saving advantage is lost with the other items.
Absolutely. When not filming I will be using earbuds, and I will also make a smaller choke for this kit.
@@LB0FIAn I’ll make you a USB PD trigger cable! What type connector is the power input on the (tr)usdx?
Thank you, and I will check
Forgot to mention . They work well on SSTV as well with same interface I made. George
Rather see it on a spectrum analyzer than on a scale.
I would really like to see it on an antenna analyzer actually, which will be more usefull. And yes, as I said in the video, that is coming. It's just an issue of it being dark when I leave for work and it being dark when I drive home from work, so there's very little time to do that this time of year. But don't worry, it's coming.
A real qrp antenna. Would be interesting to test it with your qrp t-match tuner as well.
The point here is to not need a tuner, since it's an EFHW. Also, I sold my Z-match a while back, but there is a new tuner on the way.
Mine works extremely well. I just use my simple interface. Mic, and Spkr connection from an old earpiece wire etc. No cat control. Works perfectly on my DIY mag loop. Vid = "FT8 Digital Mode. Ham Radio. Magnetic Loop Aerial" cheers from old George
You absolutely do not need cat control, and as long as you keep it simple it usually just works.
@@LB0FI The only thing I have done is fitting matching resistors such as 10ohm to simulate loads loadspkr is connected and 35ohm left and right channel to simulate headphones connected on phone I use. Plenty vids on my Ham Radio playlists etc. George
Apart from the weight, does it work?
I'll let you know when I have had time to test it. I got one of the QRP rigs I was waiting for in the mail yesterday, so now I only need some spare time to test it. Hopefully I will have a video out in the beginning of next week. That being said I can't see why it shouldn't work.
Incredible! i love these tiny simplistic things that just work!
I don't know if it works yet. That is a subject for a later video. That being said, it should work.
but your schema shows PTT. why USB sound card? why not "regular one"
Honestly, I have no idea what you are asking. Please rephrase.

A FT50-43 toroid is much to small, even with qrp. The core will be properly saturated and have much to high losses. Also a 2/14 Winding is not ideal for small toroids. With 3/21 you will have a better match of the XL to your TX. If you looking for a small qrp UnUn, pls have a look to my UniBalun or 221-UnUn project and use a FT82-43 together with an FT50-43 (inside the other toroid) 73 de DG1JAN
Thanks for your input. I have no asssumptions that this will be the greatest antenna ever. It will how ever be a fun project to try out and see. Maybe it's a dud, and then I will let you know. Maybe it will be okay, and I will also let you know then.
Nice antenna. Any idea what max power would be on it? 73
@@HamRadioKS-k7j I wouldn’t run more than 5-10 watts through it.
I have one, more than a week time I am struggling connect to FT-450D, no manual arrived. different settings, software VSJT, external audio card. Manually set, start to decode, waterfalls is OK, but can Tx only when radio is "none" and pressing Tx Enable button and this only with Data cable connected However, sometimes is stick to Tx with no releasing it. Very unstable indeed. tested with another USB audio card with same result. Seems CAT interface does not initiate and work at all. Rig control form PC I was not able to manage. Seems the cables I got are not that shielded, over all disappointing unit ...
I have to admit that I am not sure if you are asking about something or just making a statement. Also, I have no idea if this is compatible with the 450D as I used an SCU17 with the 450 I had some years ago. Also, your RFI issues can be more complex that the interface. What antenna are you using? Are you using a choke, are you using radials if needed? As most things in our wonderful hobby it's not usually one issue, but a combination of things that are interacting with each other.
@@LB0FI Thanks for the words on that. I got in touch with the producer of the unit and seems I have gotten a fake/clone one... that could explain a lot I have experienced here.73!
Antenna connection how?
What are you asking about? The Baofeng was connected to my magmount antenna.
Just ran across this hoping to get my IC706MKIIG on FT8. This was very informative, thank you. What mode do you set the radio to, there is no data mode, just SSB, CW, RTTY and AM/FM.
In most cases USB is the right choice.
Takk for ett ubrukelig tips :-) En sånn må jeg selvfølgelig ha i shacken :-) så en bestillt, 300 NOK. Who you gonna call? Ghostbusters :-)
great!
Thanks Ricardo!
This is quite interesting, thank you very much. I'll order one of the lilygo devices to try this out. 73
It is a great cost/fun-factor to this.
Very nice.
Thank you!
Great video about an extremely cool low power mode. I'll just mention one detail; the tracker firmware is set up to support 3 distinct profiles. That way you can easily switch symbol and call-sign using the buttons on the tracker. But it's also flexible enough that you can set individual operating frequencies for each of the profiles. Very useful if you bring the device to another country where they use a different frequency. Not so good if you're only planning on using it on 433.775MHz. So in that case I would suggest that you set all the 3 profiles to the same frequency, spreading factor and coding rate. For Europe (sans the UK and Poland) is 433.775MHz, spreading factor 12 and coding rate 5! Happy APRS-ing 🙂
Thank you Bob!
Video?
Perhaps at one point. I don’t have the code doing exactly what I want yet.
Cool stuff Morten… I’ll be following you on this venture… Totally makes sense to use lora mesh for aprs messages… to be honest it’s a more “regularly useful” application for it than off grid messaging.
It's actually not mesh. It is just regular APRS modulated with LoRa instead of FM. But it is fun, and I have a plan to extent the coverage to my entire town (or most of it) with just one more digipeater. It might work, and it might not work, but then again, it's not a huge investment.
@ yep in the way you have done it it is not mesh, but wouldn’t it be possible to have it run like normal lora mesh that carries aprs data to the nearest igate instead of text messages? So if a mesh had enough igates in high locations, you would hope that a transmission from a node would get to an igate in say 4/5 hops or less.
I bought this and have had great results with it. Have been running my Xiegu X6100 QRP and made contacts with someone doing POTA in WI (I live in PA) and as far West as OK.
Not bad!
I have had the 705 since June, but I still can't find a suitable power Amp for it.
The 705 is a bit picky on voltage on the PTT circuit. I know several people have modded the MX-P50M to use with the 705.
Learn CW. Also apply your knowledge on how to tune antennas so that they work. Buddipole as well as it's chinese copy you were suffering with work just fine. I have more then 320 countries worked with a buddipole on my balcony from 2006. I am in EA4. No digitals though...😉
Thank you so much for your insights!
thanks Morton great video 73 from kb2uew
Great news for Norway (if you need any info about flashing or anything let me know) , 73 from CA2RXU ;)
Thank you so much for making it so easy Ricardo. The web configuration makes it really easy, so flashing is a dream.
Ive just ordered a couple of these, my workplace uses the old RT22, and ive read the data from the old radio and it seems like they are set up on the 462mhz frequency range, i believe the new model i have is 466mhz. I dont have the programming cable for these, but im guessing the frequency cant be changed?
I honestly don’t know with the North American version.
Try frequency 434.855 with BW125kHz CR 4:7 SF 9. It's called "Polish frequency," but it's not used by ISM devices such as garage openers, electric meters, scooters, and so on.
Why would I use that when 433.775 is the recommended frequency for LoRa APRS in Norway? The point is to be able to reach others.
@LB0FI ham radio is hobby with experiments in mind, I'm suggesting to try it and compare with "European frequency"
we have something in common - the tin "elektroniklot" 😅 regards from germany
As usual Würth came to the rescue. It's not the cheapest, but one of the few places where you still can get leaded solder in Norway.
Please keep experimenting with Morten. I love low-cost ways for hams on a budget to experiment and learn. WA1KLI
