    This is solely my opinion ! But Amateurs are their own worst enemy, when it comes to Antennas ! It has been a recent discovery of mine, to just buy 135 feet of Super Wire, run it to a tuner, and operate ! You'll spend more time operating, and having fun, than trying to calculate proper dimensions, and wrestling with formulas, that unless you have sophisticated test gear, you'd never know the difference ! Just my two cents ! Maybe a little more figuring for inflation ? 👍😉

    For a slightly faster match try setting the tune control first as that is the more important one then the load control then bounce between the 2 for final optimization. Once you "know" the antenna dialing in the initial approx settings on a manual ATU for just a final little optimisation can be so quick that the cost/complexity of an auto-atu is hardly justified.

    The problem with sponsored product reviews is that the reviewer is expected to create a positive review, i.e. the product should be portrayed in a positive light. In case of a bad product, the reviewer is supposed to either not publish the review or omit the largest negative points. If the manufacturer or dealer is not happy with the result, the reviewer might not get any more products from them in the future. This is well known for e.g. apple products, and many youtubers have already talked about it. Recently, this has become a thing in the ham radio community as well. I have seen many overly positive and relatively low-effort sponsored reviews of ham radio products in the last couple of months. To me, as a viewer, this makes things more difficult as the SNR of my youtube experience is now lower than it was two years ago.

    • @LB0FI
      @LB0FI 6 днів тому

      @@SWL_JO32 That is a really good point, and absolutely something that needs to be addressed. I have myself been guilty of this, and I addressed this back in my last channel update. I might have burned bridges with both B*****od and Re***is for being honest. They simply stopped replying to my emails. This is apparently SOP among the Chinese business community. That being said, my policy is to show products as long as they are relevant to the channel and the audience while being 100% transparent and honest . It is the audience and not the sponsors that help reduce the cost of the channel through ad revenue, superchats, memberships and such and not the free stuff we get from China. It is also worth mentioning that the so called free goods come with a 25% sales tax and an added income tax for me as a Norwegian, so the items are not free by any means. If you then add the software licenses, recording gear and such, my $100 monthly revenue from UA-cam does not last long. Most of us make UA-cam videos because we’re passionate about what we’re doing and not for any financial gain.

      Thank you very much for your dedication to honest reviews! I think financial support from the community is the best solution to the dilemma described. It is an interesting device, looks great, but losses seem rather huge. I picked one up and did a comparison between this Z-match and a ZM-4 (similar to ZM2-) I built from the designs, seems to be consistent across the 40m-10m that this z-match is able to match SWR 1:almost 1 (on either/both, depending on band, hi-z and low-z) as can the ZM-4, however the ZM-4 once matched outputs min of 8.5w with 10w from radio, but this little z-match struggles to output 3w with 10w from radio. With 5w from radio takes this output to about 1w (or about 4.8w from ZM4). Might be just fault in mine but somewhere it's losing a lot of power, dodgy torrid mix, bad winding or something else perhaps.

    Great instructive video, thanks! I've actually bought the M0CVO "Magitenna" that's basically the same thing. Well, after watching your video, I think I could probably have built it myself. Nevertheless it was useful. I have two questions, if anyone can please answer: - is your unun 4:1 or 9:1? I'm not sure I can deduct this from your count of turns, sorry 😆 - how long are your ground wires? mine are 5m long but I've read that 17ft (5.18m) would be better suited? I kind of like it. Its efficiency seems to be greatly affected by the ground conductivity, though. Sometimes it performs really well, sometimes I feel that my plain 1/4 wave with elevated radials for 20m works better (for that band, of course). I also think that my 20m long EFHW in inverted V gives me better results, especially on 40m. But that's a lot more wire and poles to bring it up. Best 73s! (edited for typos and added text)

      It is a 4:1, as I also stated in the video. I use a radial net consisting of eight five meter long radials. I have found this to work well in most situations. I also use the same radial net for a whole bunch of different antennas. As a rule of thumb you could say that the worse the ground conductivity is the more radials are needed. The difference between 5 meters and 5.18 meters is theoretical at best. From experience I would have to say that an EFHW is a better antenna on the primary band, 40m in this case, but for the higher bands this is definitively up to par, and in some cases better.

      Thanks a lot for replying and my apologies for missing where you explicitly say it's a 4:1 Also thank you for the extra information on the radials. This makes sense, as the Magitenna includes a 4:1 unun as well. As a matter of fact, I've also tried using a longer radiating element (29ft, 8.84m) that supposedly requires a 9:1 unun instead, but I switched back to the 4:1 that gave me a significantly better SWR across the bands. And no difference in efficiently I could spot. As for EFHW vs. Rybakov, I would suppose that the Rybakov offers a take-off angle that suits DX better when the EFHW is used as a low angle sloper or inverted V like I use it (inverted L being more difficult to bring up in portable). Best 73s de F4LDT.

      I'm clearly doing something wrong. In my test config I have two channels programmed. Each is assigned to scan list 1 and they are set to inc/enable. In the scan settings, i just have scan list 1 enabled, and it's set to M1/normal. I have button P0 set to ScanA. But when I press the button nothing happens. I just get the text saying SCAN 1

    I'm ok with no display, but no channel scanning capabilities is a deal breaker for me, because I'm not using it as a business radio and would like to monitor many different frequencies each time I use it.

    Once I qua;ified as a ham and realised that my wife and neighbours would object to me putting up a fancy antenna I bought a 80-6 meter vertical with a 4:1 transformer and despite local hams disparaging remarks I have managed some great reults on it. I now have a pole and two other wire based Rybbs as I call them and love them to bits. Simple and effective - especially for QRP ops. 73 M7BLC

      The best antenna is the one you can get in the air. I also started with a Rybakov, the M0CVO Magitenna, and unfortunately I ended up following the instructions where it said that (1) I could mount it any way I wanted, (2) I did not need a counterpoise and (3) that it could very well be mounted indoors. I put it horizontally up in the attic without a counterpoise, that did not work well. Then I packed it up, and did not have a look at it for two years before Tim G5TM and Walt K4OGO started talking about Rybakovs.

    How do you like the iFTx app aside from no inbuilt PTT control? I think this should work fine with something like a Signalink USB. They present themselves as a usb sound card and have in built VOX circuit. With the iPhone 15 and some of the newer iPads switch to usb C, that should simplify the cabling. I have no experience with the Digirig, but I think in theory that should work similarly to the SignaLink. I think is should have a vox circuit also.

    • @LB0FI
      @LB0FI 21 день тому

      The app itself is great, but the limitations put on by Apple makes it cumbersome. I do believe a Signalink would make a lot of difference. I actually think OE4JHW made a video on exactly that.
