    _Hané_ can be translated as "flick", since a 跳ね (hané) is the upward flick at the end of a brush stroke. It also means a splash of water or other liquid.

      Hane Also means “Wing” (羽)

    • @hananokuni2580

      @@MunksTT True, except that the word for _wing_ is written 羽根 and it usually refers to bird wings. 羽 by itself means _feather._ For wings of an airplane _tsubasa_ (翼) would be used.

      I'm going to guess the english translation would be to "flank" the opponent - given that would be an attack on the side

      I was looking for a nice English translation to replace hane but couldn't find one... =)

    Great video. Watched it all the way through. Have definitely been guilty of attacking too early.

    Presumably you sometimes have to chose Principle 3 before Principle 2 i.e. you have to take the vital point first before trying the reduction from the outside - otherwise the chance to take the vital point will be lost ?

    • @GoMagic
      @GoMagic  Рік тому +6

      Precisely so! But the exact details of when either of those principles apply could easily fit into a thick book... =)

    There is standard-ish translation for hane, "bend", which is usually distinguished from the right angle extension called "turn". But then again, I think everyone says just hane.

    • @GoMagic
      @GoMagic  8 місяців тому

      Yeah, people just say hane. :)

    I'm really new at the game, but why (at the timestamp 2:58) can't you just play a black piece at (6, 3)? (Imagine that the bottom left corner is the point (0,0) and the bottom right corner is (19, 0), since I don't know the usual coordinate system in the game). It looks like the white group is stuck this way, right?

    • @GoMagic
      @GoMagic  Рік тому +2

      If Black plays 6-3, White will respond at 7-4...White will still escape. So covering from above is an easier way of sealing White in.

  • @fultinbras

    plz explain the most obvious moves like white attacking from the left at 10:50

    • @GoMagic
      @GoMagic  7 місяців тому

      Attacking from the left? You mean White playing on the first line there? It won't really attack Black in any way because that move doesn't make Black's eye space smaller.

  • @Superleonxu
    @Superleonxu 5 місяців тому

    Sorry but I don't understand 8:07. Why is the white dead?

    • @GoMagic
      @GoMagic  5 місяців тому

      Because after White captures those two black stones - that's one eye, right? And after White captures the single black stone on the right - that's not an eye. So... only one eye.

    What does the player do if the area has exactly 8 points of territory?
