Arthur's knights were framed! The knight who killed the historian was riding a horse, but none of Arthur's knights did have horses. Free the Arthurian 6!
Reactors are confused by this film? Imagine how we were in the early 70's when Monty Python first came on. Until then it was all "My wife's so fat..." and Mother-in-law jokes. We all watched it in stunned silence - then laughed about and recited our favourite lines at school and work (including our olds...). Still do to this day!
15:46 "Are they gonna throw a cow?... If they throw a cow, I'm literally going to stop watching toda-." *Cow gets fucking launched* I swear, the timing on that was perfect. 🤣🤣🤣
The lines will come back to you in ordinary conversation. Wait until the right situation happens and you say, “I’m not dead yet. I’m feeling much better.” Or, “I fart in your general direction.” And whoever you’re talking to says, “Come back here, you coward. I’ll bite your kneecap.” And you’ll know you’ve met a comrade in comedy that’s a deeper connection than you expected.
They could only afford 1 horse and it was a rental, that seen where the historian gets killed and the cops are investigating the crime. Hell, the whole reason the cops showed up at the end to arrest Arthur was because they literally ran out of money in the budget so the ending was a LITERAL cop out.🤣
The story of the horses is always told but the rest of the story is that no one knew how to ride a horse and they lacked the time and budget for them to learn. As far as the end goes, again they didn’t have the budget for a big battle to end the movie. There was nothing to tell you it was the end because the people in charge of the credits were fired at the beginning. They couldn’t get studio financing so they rounded up what they could. They got eight investors including Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin Ian Anderson, a couple of record companies and a cricket team they had some association with. The next movie,”The Life of Brian” was easier to finance but they still had George Harrison mortgage his house for some of the money.
My parents moved to England when I was 10, in 1970. Four of the five years I lived there just happened to be the Monty Python years, at an impressionable time in my childhood. That was a long-winded way of saying that the ending made perfect sense to me. Python is one of England's greatest contributions to mankind; as an Englishman, you should be very proud. Great reaction, young man. I would suggest "Life of Brian" next. It had a bigger budget and a more cohesive plot.
For us oldsters, we watched their TV show and were very acquainted with their brand of surreal, silly and yet brilliant humor. I remember the first time I saw them. It was midnight and my jaw dropped. I wasn't sure whether to laugh or be appalled. But I was fascinated. Soon my friends and I were imitating their gags. After their TV show ended, this movie showed up in our local theater. It was packed. I had no idea that others were into this zany humor. It was a great time.
I was lucky enough to find an original typewritten script of this in an Op-shop (Charity Shop) in Oz. Just reading, "I told zem we already got one...(tee hee hee)" reduces me to tears of laughter! Thanks, MP for all the years of sheer silly fun!
My favorit, amongst many, in this film. Is trying to imagine the level of trolling when the intermission hits. Imagine how many people stood up ready for their break and then running back to their seats in the theater. These guys were just ahead of their time with the creative way of taking the piss on religion, monarchy, witchtrials and whatever else topics they touch. Kinda puts things into perspective.
The film was funded by a coalition of rock stars and record labels such as Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Elton John, Jethro Tull, Island Records, Chrysalis Records and Michael White. They were all big python fans and wanted to see the film made, when they found out they were having issues they all chipped in
I paid $1.50 to see this movie at the Brockton East theater in Massachusetts when it came out when I was in high school. My cheeks and stomach were aching when I got out. To this day, no movie has ever been funnier on first watch.
The old bearded man with bright light shining through in the sky. Represents God. That must not be a thing anymore. Lots of reactors don't know what he is. That surprises me.
So Monty Python were a sketch comedy group and had a TV show (Monty Python's Flying Curcus) prior to this, their first feature film. The 3 main guys playing 90% of the roles in this (John Cleese, Eric Idle, Graham Chapman, Michael Palin and Terry Jones) originally wrote a series of vaguely King Arthur themed skits which were then worked into a loose narrative. The sixth member of the group was Terry Gilliam who does all the animation work and plays the odd side character here and there. Both Terry's directed Holy Grail on a shoestring budget. Every castle exterior and interior you see are actually all the same castle shot from different angles. If you want to see more you should just do the films in order. Life of Brian is the next one and is an absolute classic (with a bigger budget and slightly more coherent plot)
Thoroughly enjoyed this reaction! You were so confused at the beginning!!!!!! Everything was silly on the surface, but just beneath the Pythons showed their intelligence and education. Their TV show, Flying Circus, often had sketches ending with police arresting the players. One even carried on with a cop arresting the first arresting officer, then another arresting the second, then an arm came into the doorframe... And the topics and plots of those sketches were fantastic and absurd, very much worth delving into. Not only were the actors seriously selling their parts, I continue to delight in the costumes, props, set work, and cinematography. If they set their minds to a straight drama or documentary it would have been outstanding.
but the whole world would have been poorer for it! I was struck while watching this that we now have words like "mockumentary". Christopher Guest could not have existed without something like Python to inspire him.
This might actually be the thing that gets me to sign up for a patreon for the first time. I simply cannot. How can a person exist and not know Monty Python. I must know everything, and I love that your reactions are probably not that far off from the intended audience in the 70s! I was shown Monty Python from my earliest memories by my nerdy dad, I love that people like you now exist!
I am offended (jokingly) that you cut out your reaction to the exact part where they read out of the book the rules of the holy hand grenade, it's so hilarious, I would have loved to see your reaction. hehe!
The army at the end was any of the crew they could spare along with local people that came to watch the filming. They even had kids come by the carloads to be extras just to be part of the film. If you look close in the back it it just children with no weapons or shields. The guy who is hit over the head and dumped in the cart is the same actor that played the "famous historian". Film cost about $250K pounds to make.
Bruh, i saw Spamalot (the stage musical based on this film) about 20+ years ago, and i swear, i almost peed my pants and nearly had an aneurysm from laughing so hard!

Same. It’s left out of some reactor’s edits and I’m always dumbfounded by its omission. Glad to not only see it here, but to have this gent catch on to the humor in it.
Aww, your confusion was hilarious. Monty Python were absolutely bonkers, so off the wall. You really need to watch The life of Brian . A more cohesive story still bloody brilliant 😂
The complete confusion you suffered from the intro credits to “is this even the right film” was hysterical. That’s what happens when someone tries to take this movie seriously 😂
The actors were also the writers, designers, animator, and directors, as well as almost every one of the characters with lines to speak (exceptions: Famous Historian Frank and his PA, the surprised guard who didn't get killed at the gate to Swamp Castle, a few of the wedding guests, some of the ladies at Castle Anthrax, the cops, the guy who didn't want to go on the cart, and the old lady who resisted the Ni treatment, plus a couple of notable guests connected to the troupe - Connie Booth as the witch, Neil Innes (music credit) as Sir Robin's lead minstrel, and Carol Cleveland as Zoot/Dingo). These are the Pythons, creators of the absurdist sketch comedy show Monty Python's Flying Circus, and they did all their movies exactly the same way they did their sketches on the tv show - i.e. they did it all themselves. They truly were geniuses.
The theatrical version starts with The beginning of a black and white movie with credits rolling called Dentist on the Job. imagine everybody being so confused. They probably got up and left the theater thinking they're at the wrong film. Classic Monty Python move. So committed to a joke that they were willing to get people to leave the movie in the first few minutes just for the bit.
Welcome to Python. Where rules are some kind of weird sandwich. At the time this would have made more sense, if that makes any sense, as things like the credits being in an odd place, incongruous music, fourth wall breaking and sketches having no punchlines were all part of normal service. They have inspired several generations that followed. Incidentally almost all six of them became national institutions individually since (or died, in one case). Why am I writing this? You've googled all this already.
I'm french and when I grew up every english language movie I watched was dubbed in French ... Except this one ! KP found your channel around a month or two back and been enjoying the reaction! Especially the LOTR what a trilogy, huh? Anyways, keep up the good work you seem like a proper G and sound dude! Best of luck to you man! Love 🙌🏼
I've heard that the actor playing Tim (look him up 😉) forgot what the original name of his character was so he ad-libbed Tim and they all went with it.
A great high-school memory was watching this in history class with one of my favorite/craziest teachers. It was the last day before Christmas break and he said we could watch this movie at some point. He walked in the room a few min before class started and saw there were still students from the previous class watching the end of Love Actually. I shit you not he got irritated, expressed his dislike for the film and just walked right back outside of the classroom. He didn't come back for nearly 10min, well into the start of the class. It was only 6 of us in that class, and going by what he said a few weeks ago I decided to start streaming that movie on the smartboard before he got back. He finally walked back in and said something to the effect of "now this is more like it". Absolute craziest thing about it is that his aunt played as an extra in this movie, which he confirmed for us after we brought up seeing his last name in the credits.
Deciding to just experience what is presented instead of 'figuring it out' was the best decision. Once you remember that Galahad's full name was Galahad the Pure you realise he was the only one that could have gotten through Castle Anthrax safely. Yeah, it's all budgetary. They had no backers. That's the same castle every time. Just shot from different directions. No money for real horses. Not much film left on the cutting room floor. Using the same actors in multiple roles, budget. The 'cop out' at the end was where the money was gone. Their next film, 'The life of Brian' has a much larger budget. The money made from this and some outside cash. I believe John Lennon invested a large sun in it.

It works even better on streaming platforms where someone might _genuinely_ wonder if they left subtitles on.
Monty Python is probably the first comedy troupe to regularly troll their fans.
“What’s he do, nibble your bum?” is such an underrated line.
"Is this film real?" and watching you get exasperated by the running coconut jokes was hilarious. Monty Python movies at their best right here haha

Fun fact: coconut shells actually *are* used by foley artists to make the sounds of galloping horses for films. That’s where the pythons got the idea!
It's been a fun time watching this man's brain melt from the absurdity.
The cost to hire horses for the film was too expensive if the stories are to be believed, hence the Coconuts haha
They could only afford 1 horse and it was a rental, that seen where the historian gets killed and the cops are investigating the crime. Hell, the whole reason the cops showed up at the end to arrest Arthur was because they literally ran out of money in the budget so the ending was a LITERAL cop out.🤣

Not grasping the fake Swedish jokes during the opening credits is a credit to having to rise to the level of humour that is Monty Python.
