Fun fact: The restaurant scene was the only film scene that actually made QUENTIN FRIGGIN' TARANTINO feel uncomfortable! That is an accomplishment that so many others could never do.
Its worth mentioning that most of the musical numbers in the Monty Python films were written and performed by Eric Idle who went on to create the broadway musical Spamalot!
So the bit with Eric Idle as the waiter walking out of the restaurant and down the streets to the little cottage was originally going to be the ending of the film. His walking would be done while the credits were rolling and then the film would end with him telling the audience to fuck off.
If you enjoyed "The Crimson Permanent Assurance" (dir. Terry Gilliam) you should really watch "Brazil" (1985) and "Time Bandits" (1981) Both also directed by Terry Gilliam
Also "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen" (1988). The three form a thematic trilogy about the different stages of life. Childhood, adulthood, and old age. He has a lot of great movies, but Brazil is his best imo.
I think Brazil is a bit overrated, but all Gilliam's films from 'Jabberwocky' (1977) to '12 Monkeys' (1995) are very much worth watching. They have a magical style that really is unique.
One of my favorite jokes in this movie, purely for reasons of hindsight, is after the baby is born, the mother asks what gender it is, and the doctor responds that it's too early to impose any roles on it. A silly throwaway line in the eighties. Something that someone might actually say today. 😂
In addition, in the background of the scene when Mr Creosote explodes, there's an extra at a table actually throwing up because of the sheer grossness!
“try and be nice to people, avoid eating fat, read a good book every now and then, get some walking in, and try to live together in peace and harmony with people of all creeds and nations.” honestly these are words to live your life by. Being civil to others makes your life so much easier. Walking reduces depression and helps the body keep fit. This is sound advice from a very silly movie.
The only issue was the fat advice, which is based on "science" that was popularly accepted for most of our lives but which is being rightly ousted as false and not scientific at all. Fat is extremely good and arguably essential for good health. But that isn't the spirit of the message, so it gets a pass.
_Monty Python's The Meaning of Life_ is the closest brush with death I've had to date, and I don't mean the salmon mousse; I was laughing so hard at the Mr. Creosote sketch (particularly when he began blasting the poor cleaning woman's back) that I locked up and couldn't take a breath for _minutes._ Amazingly, Mr. Creosote has his own Wikipedia page.
...and the react-or in the orange shirt had just said moments earlier that "that was the strangest thing I've ever seen"... ohhh how little he knew what was still in store in this movie 😄😄
One of the things about that opening scene that you guys watched with the pirate accountants. Is that it took up 90% of the movie's budget or something like that. But they basically used up all the money. And the guy who did it is the guy who does all the animations for Monty Python. All the other pythons had no idea what he was doing. Then they saw it and loved it and went oh shit we're out of money
I just remembered this part was referenced on an early Family Guy episode, "A Fish Out of Water". The one where Peter and the guys were hunting a fish called Daggermouth. Their boat goes into a cave, past the Terry Jones character with the long arms and funny voice: "I wonder where the fish did go... A fish... A-fish... A fishy... ooohhhh"
Finally someone reacts to this film. Everybody stops after Life of Brian. To me, Holy Grail is the most accessible and funny, Life of Brian has the best story and themes, but Meaning of Life is the epitome of absurdist/surrealist humor. It's my favorite
The other Monty Python films are: And Now for Something Completely Different (1971) - this is a "best of" skits from their show, re-performed with no laugh track. Live at the Hollywood Bowl (1982) - a concert film from their live performances with a very engaged audience, some best ofs some new material. Parrot Sketch Not Included - Also a best of, but it's hosted by Steve Martin and the intro-and outro bits are well worth watching, and it's the last time Graham Chapman was on camera. Live at the Aspen Comedy Festival (1998) an interview with Robert Klein about the history of the group, very sentimental. The last time all 6 are on stage together, for maybe their funniest gag ever. The cast of Cheers are in the audience. Monty Python Live (Mostly): One Down, Five to Go (2014) their fairwell performance at an enourmous theater with a massive production budget rivaling an olympic opening ceremony.
@ladislavvalnoha3318 I prefer Live at The Hollywood Bowl because it comes with neither the canned laughter of the show nor the dead silence of the films, but the genuine, uprorious laughter of the crowd.
I was lucky enough to see this in the theater when it came out. I was mostly unfamiliar with Monty Python (this was long before the Flying Circus was on MTV), so I didn't realize they cameoed in the short film, and didn't realize it was part of the movie. So I was completely surprised when they showed up again mid-film, which made it all the funnier.
The Crimson Permanent Assurance was originally intended to occur in the part of the film where they bust into that corporate meeting, but like pretty much all Gilliam projects, the scope and budget of that section started getting too large. They didn't want to destroy the momentum of the rest of the film by having it in the middle, so like the geniuses they are, they solved the problem by letting Gilliam have his way and turning it into a featurette. Just like when they used coconuts and pantomime when they couldn't afford horses, these guys knew how to make the best of the practical limits they faced.
4:21 - So at the cinema back in the old days there was always a little picture to go with the big picture (much like how the Pixar shorts became a thing before a feature presentation). My Dad called a film at the cinema "the pictures" (Its an old British term for the cinema), which is a shortened form of "motion picture".
Chapman did not have AIDS. That is a misconception arising from the fact that he was openly gay. In fact, his cancer was entirely due to his being a lifelong chain smoker.
27:45 One of those Santa angels is Jane Leeves. She is best known for her role as Daphne Moon on the NBC sitcom Frasier (1993-2004). She was also on the show, Hot In Cleveland.
The film “And Now For Something Completely Different” is a compilation of the best sketches from the Monty Python’s Flying Circus TV show. Worth a watch.
The musical number "Every sperm is sacred" depleted the budget for the movie. Eventually, just as he had done before, George Harrison of the Beatles stepped in and produced the rest of the film.
Really glad to see you watch this. Most reaction youtubers just stop after the second movie cause they heard this one wasn't as popular, but it's a real gem.
Actually, the movie is closer to their TV series than any other movie. In fact, that animation you see on the TV at the end as the TV floats away is the opening animation of their show. If you want to get a taste of their TV show, watch "And now for Something Completely Different" which was a bunch of their TV skits re filmed for the theater.
The Crimson Permanent Assurance is one of the best things ever made - I remember splitting my sides with laughter when I first watched it in the cinema! And having it return to attack the main feature is pure genius. Magnificent.
i had so much fun watching you both react to this movie. i've got cd of theirs somewhere around here that i bought sometime in th late 90's with a bunch of their best sketches on it - dead parrot, cheese shop, i'm a lumberjack, crunchy frog, etc. you could do an entire series just about their most famous sketches.
Some people have recommended Brazil, Time Bandits and Erik the Viking as "officially not Python, but effectively Monty Python films", and they're all good recommendations, but I'd like to add Jabberwocky to the list.
This was the movie that most reminded us of their tv show - skits put together through animation - only on steroids! The Galaxy Song is famous and beloved in Britain.
I adore this film. Holy Grail will always live in my heart, but Meaning of Life just delights me every time. It feels a bit like being tickled too long: you beg for it to stop, but it so thoroughly and satisfactorily overstimulates that you're disappointed when it does end.
I didn't think I'd find a monty python movie that is making me wonder if its better than holy grail but goddamn this is making me do that. This was hysterical
At the time, the video for the song "Every sperm is sacred" was the most costly music production ever made in England, and they had to hire out the whole of London square to do it.

Its very on par with their sketch show the flying circus but with bigger budget and theming. If you ever get the chance to pick up "and now for something completely different" its a solid collection of skits from their show in a movie long format

Not sure if you guys caught on or not but the artwork you were mentioning at 5:30 was based on / a reference to the Pink Floyd The Wall CD movie. The animations are extremely similar as well as the tone and shift in the singing voice at that time is very close to the tone ofsome of the songs on the album, Im just a friendly psychonaut who really loves that album and was cool seeing a reference to it lol

What a gift to culture!
So the bit with Eric Idle as the waiter walking out of the restaurant and down the streets to the little cottage was originally going to be the ending of the film. His walking would be done while the credits were rolling and then the film would end with him telling the audience to fuck off.
I also like how his whole speech is supposed to be about being tolerant and accepting, but at some unspoken slight, he gets upset and says fuck off
@@MisterSynyster Way too real, these days.
When I first saw that scene, it teared me up for a few minutes. And then Idle's "Fuck off" just had me LOL so hard!
Incorrect. It has been suggested later that it would be better like that, because that long walk interrupts the movie's momentum.
If you enjoyed "The Crimson Permanent Assurance" (dir. Terry Gilliam) you should really watch "Brazil" (1985) and "Time Bandits" (1981) Both also directed by Terry Gilliam
