I prefer the 44 mag, mostly because I got a smokin deal on a Henry big boy and I have a 44 mag Ruger Super Blackhawk companion revolver. Thanks for sharing the video and I hope and pray all is well with your family, they certainly come first…
I just got my first in .357/.38 today and was so furious there wasn't much information on ammunition velocities, and a simple gel test so thank you. What a coincidence too, you and InrangeTV uploaded a video about .357 lever gun topics I hadn't put much thought into today. Take care!
I think we are going to require further testing of that American Eagle 158 grain JSP. They might list it as "target ammo" because most people shoot .357 Mag out of handguns, but that performance out of the carbine was very impressive. Great video, as always. 🙏
The AE 158 jsp is very accurate out of my 77/357. From other tests I've seen done, it appears to favor carbine barrel lengths. I believe mine gets 1725 fps.

Why .357 Magnun? Cause they are cool!! Because they are still relevant to todays rifleman and hunters. I think this is one of your best videos. I really liked how you presented and used the balistic gel. The top view side by side comparison coupled with the use of the moving measurements really showed how they each perform. Then you topped it off with the bullets on a stick. That wrapped up the entire sequence and comparison/test. The end was even great. You knew you had already stated the info and instead of ending with more of the same you added what viewers might be thinking. Perfect Pitch for the .357 or any round. You found a way to reinvent yourself, I love it!!
Those Hammerdown bullets say they are “molecularly bonded” according to the box. But others have demonstrated as you have that they seem prone to separating. Which is a shame, they seemed perfect to me, and they were hard to come by for the longest time so I stocked up when I was able to find some. But I think I’ll use my Barnes 180s for hunting instead. I load hand cast and powder coated 158gr Lee flat points with 5gr or so of just about any pistol powder I might have a surplus of for 1100fps plinkers. Brass is range pickup, free. Lead is scrap, free. Picked up 5lbs of scrap paint powder (kind of a bluish green) from a local coater, free. I picked up cases of small pistol primers before Covid at $30/k, .03c/round and 4lb's of of PB powder was a C note on sale with tax, 1lb = 1,400 rounds. At 5.0gr/round that's a nickel for the powder, it's .08c/round and my time but my Dillon SDB cuts that down but the grandkids love it. In loads using slower burning propellant (such as 2400), the velocity with a hot load vs. 4 inch revolver is usually double, if not a bit more. There's a good deal of consideration with that, because pistol projectiles aren't built to stand up to high speed impact. Either one finds a tougher projectile, or simply enjoy the much extended range the rifle gives, essentially extending 4-inch pistol ballistics an additional 160yd.
@exothermal.sprocket True. Nosler does or at east did Make their partition bullet For handgun hunting. For sure Somebody would need to find a tough enough handgun bullet for those kind of velocities.
@@drsmokeybones Swift A-frame, Hawk, XTP Magnum (only available in 45 cal), Sierra Sportsmaster, Speer Deep Curl, there's probably others. I watched an old video of you putting a new front sight on a Marlin. Very informative. What I really liked was your explaining about a safe file. I made one as you outlined, and it allowed me to install a new dovetail front sight on my Henry 357 lever gun without any complications. Thank you.
Good video and great to see you out shooting and smiling. The slow motion melon demolition was highly entertaining 😝 It’s worth noting that EGW makes adapter plates for most red dot sights that fit on Marlin and Rossi lever actions. (Maybe Henry too?). I hate to admit it, but my 65-year old eyes don’t work as well with iron sights or even aperture sights as they used to.
Have you considered trying Skinner peep sights in place of the standard buckhorn and brass bead setup? Might put a fiber front sight for a little 'pop' in the peep, or alternately a square edge brass blade.
Fantastic video I don’t understand people that spout off something other than the 350 I’ve got this 308. I’ve got a 44 you’re talking about 357 stick with the point again great video
I just got a new TPS arms m6 scout .357 over .410. I haven’t got a chance to get any game with the .357 yet but I’ve been running the Hornady lever evolution at the range. I also have the Hammer down. I wonder how the Hornady Stx bullet stacks up to these. Appreciate the testing because the Barnes are expensive, I reload their projectiles in most of my bottle neck cartridges.
I am pretty sure they advertise the Hammer Down as being bonded. I was surprised at that but the results don't lie. I bought up some of it for 44 mag to use in the deerfield so i hope it serves me well. I have yet to try it because i'm sighted in with Hornady xtp so i'm using those for now.Good test buddy thanks for the work and sharing.
Folks have hunted medium game with the 357 in a handgun. I see no issue with it in a carbine with the proper ammo and getting within a reasonable range based on the gun and abilities of the shooter. Probably 150 yards max
According to trajectory charts for .357 bullets. I would say the max accurate range would be about 125 yards. After that the rounds downward swoop would be hard to guesstimate accuracy wise. Expansion would still be there even during the downward swoop though. On most rounds. For long range I would prefer a spitzer pointed bullet.
Henry makes great guns. The only reason I didn't include it is because I don't have one. I do have a relationship with Henry, and if I get consistent with my videos again, I will probably reach out to them for some of their pistol caliber carbines.
Great to see a new video from Target Suite and that other guy. The stick mounted bullets were good. I think that Marlin and Winchester need a Henry for competition. For hunting the only limit on the 357 Mag is how fast it loses velocity and energy as it goes down range. Hornady Leverevolution rounds help the bullets keep their speed, but not sure if they are hunting bullets. You may have to spend some time and have some fun at the range testing that Federal target ammo and the Leverevolution stuff
Good video! The American eagle look to have one of the larger wound cavity and had a good expansion. What ammo did you use on those hogs? Can you do a review on a Henry side loading big boy?
Good to see a video from you. Love the lever guns. We need to get ours out for some range time. My pick would be the American Eagle. I believe that bullet would hold up fine👍🏻. Prayers for the wife.
Thanks. I appreciate your comment. I too suspect that the American Eagle would hold up okay, unless it was just a really bad angle and bad hit into heavy bone.
My children and I have killed a couple dozen deer with the 357 Mag. The Hornady XTP bullet in 125, 158, and 180 is a great performer. We have also taken deer with the Barnes 110gr XPB, the Remington 125 jhp. Last year we started using the Hornady 140 FTX and have only taken 2 deer with it so far. For the short range eastern woods hunting we do it has proven to be the perfect fit for us. The kids practice with 38 special and hunt with 357.
Thanks! Yours is a great testimony do the effectiveness of the 357 Magnum on deer. I posted a video a while back comparing the Hornady XTP and FTX bullets. Here's a link if you are interested. ua-cam.com/video/qy8CD8r5aa4/v-deo.htmlsi=CkZ_-PxeaUF3FHs_
Very helpful video! I'm hoping to get a deer this year with the Rossi 16", and I planned on using the American Eagle. I know it says "target" on the box... but I also know what a 158 grain soft point does at those speeds, so I thought it should be worth a try. Glad to see it perform so well in your tests!

Fantastic video, and much needed. Thank you At what distance were you shooting these loads on the gel test, please? Also curious as to the range on the hogs you shot? I've been deleting subscriptions lately, but added one today...
I think now that you have a ton of 158Gr American Eagle I would test that. Federal might call it a target load but a lot of people hunt with 158Gr JSP I have carried them while hunting and I have carried 158Gr Speer Gold Dot as well but haven't needed it yet
Great video George. Glad to see you again. Hope things are going well for your wife and you both are in our thoughts and prayers. Which ammo did you use for the hogs?
@@TargetSuite Gotta love the XTP. It always works well. I’ve heard the American Eagle 158 is a good hunting round, but I’ve never used it personally. But I have my new Marlin sighted in with it for this year’s deer season. Will let ya know how it performs. Thanks for all the hard work you do with putting out this great content for all of us.

For versatility the 357 magnum / 38 Special are just that versatile. All 38 sp ammo can be used, 357mag. over the counter is handy. Revolver and Rifle that can use the same ammo. Handloading really brings out the Best. Just the Hornady Manual has 12 different bullet Types and Weights. Hot loads are possible. However working with powder loadings for accuracy and fine tuning ammo for use, Protection, HP Loadings, Lead Hard Cast Hardcast for Food. Deer and Hog. My Revolver, SS 4 in. Rifle, single shot, 22 in. barrel, 3x9x40 scope on top.
The federal load is called a "target" load because some knucklehead will climb all over Federal because there was only a little deformation out of his 2" revolver on milk jugs. If you avoid Texas heart shots, regardless of bullet, it will work just fine on deer. Just be realistic about the distances for which a 357 carbine is useful.
Thanks for your comment! Keeping your distances appropriate for the gun you are hunting with is crucial. Especially if you're using a handgun cartridge. Thanks again!
I agree. 16" to 20" of barrel for almost any magnum pistol round really boosts velocities. Short stubby rounds like 9mm and 45 acp don't gain anywhere near the amount of velocity a .357 Mag or a 44Mag gain. Using Magnum pistol rounds out of rifle barrels for hunting is when you should really get selective about ammo. A sturdy bullet is needed. In case you are presented with a very short range shot. Also any round nose or flat point bullet (wheather it is a HP or not) is limited in range due to massive velocity loss. Even though expansion still ocurrs. Because when the bullet is on its downward drop at the furthest ranges of its effective accuracy. Accuracy is very hard to achieve. Since all bullets never travel at exactly the same velocity the faster ones will shoot to a higher point of aim. Thats why the 30-30 is effective only to about 150 yds. Even though a good 150 gr. or 170gr. bullet out of a 30-30 starts out traveling roughly, at about 2300 to (optimistically) 2400 fps. Is only recommended effective out to 150 yds. And the recommendarion is correct and should be stuck to. Spitzer bullets and higher velocity are needed for accuracty to about 200 yards and over. If more range is needed or desired then a caliber with extra velocity and spitzer bullets is needed. A round nose or flat point bullet usually won't go much past 225yds to 250yds even when loaded in the 300 Winchester Magnum cartridge. So the notion of loading pistol bullets to dangerous pressures to increase velocity should be resisted. You'll only wear out your expensive rifle faster and accuracy may be destroyed in an effort to gain a measly 50fps more. Its not worth it. So to make a long story short; don't try to turn a .357 Magnum into a 30-30. I just isn't worth the hassle.
@minerblue9641 I agree except when it comes to the 45 ACP + p. That ammo really gains a boost in a carbine length barrel. I posted a video about the Ruger LC Carbine in that cartridge and the Boost in power level was amazing!
Put them through a carbine. It improves. I’m in Alberta and did manage to get a couple offerings from buffalo bore but the Other pistol ammo measured at : American Eagle 158 gr (1780-1810) From 20” Blaser aluminum 158= 1675fps PPU 158= 1675
I like the Buffalo Bore. I know some aren't a fan of bullets that shed petals but i like that kind of bullet. Do you by any chance have a video showing you putting that peep sight on that rifle? I just want to know if its something that i could do or is it pretty involved?
It's not involved" but most likely it will have to be fit to the slot. I do cover that in a video but, not sure which one. You can check back here for a link or email me at targetsuite@gmail.com
Several projectiles I'd consider in various weight: Swift A-frame, Hornady XTP, Speer Deep Curl. Grizzly makes a 180 and 200 gr hardcast that would penetrate silly distances, but it wouldn't have quite the same shock energy transfer.
Question for you about the Marlin rifle. Did you have any trouble stuffing the cartridges into the tube? I got a new 1894 Marlin and it's all I can do to get more than a couple into it. Also the tip of the bullet seems to want to head down into the gate as opposed to forward into the tube. You too ?
@@casejasnoch2533 I try it.... with 4 cartridges ! I wonder if pulling the spring out and dropping 9 in there and then resecuring the spring will work?
I tried some Buffalo bore 140 barnes in my new ruger 1894 and it was screaming fast. Unfortunately 100 yard groups were measured in feet, not inches. Ouch.
Mounting the slugs on sticks was awesome! A great way to really demonstrate their dimensions. This should be a new standard.

Good video and great to see you out shooting and smiling. The slow motion melon demolition was highly entertaining 😝
It’s worth noting that EGW makes adapter plates for most red dot sights that fit on Marlin and Rossi lever actions. (Maybe Henry too?). I hate to admit it, but my 65-year old eyes don’t work as well with iron sights or even aperture sights as they used to.
Thanks for your comment! Irons do get harder to resolve as we get older.
Have you considered trying Skinner peep sights in place of the standard buckhorn and brass bead setup? Might put a fiber front sight for a little 'pop' in the peep, or alternately a square edge brass blade.
@@exothermal.sprocket my lever actions that don’t have an optic run aperture sights for sure.

Fantastic video I don’t understand people that spout off something other than the 350 I’ve got this 308. I’ve got a 44 you’re talking about 357 stick with the point again great video
It s good to have you back ,Dear George!!
Exactly! Thanks for weighing in!
the only issue would bewhen using too light projectiles that will come apart at carbine velocities
@@WayStedYou- Very true, I have some .357 110 grain Winchester HP’s that come apart like a grenade out of a 16” Rossi R92 lol
Nice video keep up the good work, brother, I pray that everything will go well with you and your family
Thank you Jeremy!
Love your channel! You have a very kind and sincere personality. Great video. From Mississippi.
Thank you. I appreciate that.

Was there a reason you didn't include the Henry .357 carbine in your review?
Henry makes great guns. The only reason I didn't include it is because I don't have one. I do have a relationship with Henry, and if I get consistent with my videos again, I will probably reach out to them for some of their pistol caliber carbines.
Everyone should have a lever. Thanks for the video.
"That other guy" really appreciates your comment, and your suggestion about testing the Federal and Hornady ammo.
Another awesome video sir, thank you for the wisdom and time. Wisdom and time are our most valuable commodities. Thank u for sharing yours sir🫡🇺🇸💪
Thank you. And thank you for watching!
Prayers for all the family. Be safe Brother!
Thanks Thomas!
Btw, keep in mind that Hornady lists that 125gr XTP as a varmint bullet with a velocity range of 1200fps to 1700fps. Thanks again for your comment!
Hope you have great success with that Rossi.
@@TargetSuite thank you sir

@@jeremywilson15147keep us posted how the federal American eagles do on deer. I’ve been wondering about this. They chronograph pretty fast out of my rifles. If you have Facebook I have a 357 mag group on there. We would love to have you in there if you are interested. Thanks
I think any of those loads would work great Great video
great testing George.you always do a fine job.I have a 357 and a 44 mag in TC CONTENDERS.HOPING TO TRY THESE ON DEER HERE IN PA.THIS YEAR.HOPE THINGS GO WELL FOR YOUR FAMILY.TAKE CARE
Thanks! Good luck on your hunts this year!
I’ve wondered about the performance of the 357mag on deer, good information. 👍👍🙏for the Mrs.
It definitely will work but it's velocity dependent. Don't shoot 180s out of a 5 inch revolver because they don't expand well
Great video George! Good to see you back On Target! 😊
I especially like the bullet on a stick example, truly unique! Welcome back and my prayers are still with you and Janet.

Another fun one, George! Thanks.
Fantastic video, and much needed. Thank you
At what distance were you shooting these loads on the gel test, please?
Also curious as to the range on the hogs you shot?
I've been deleting subscriptions lately, but added one today...
Excellent presentation. Have you tried the PPU 357Mag 158 GR. JHP ? They seem to be a hot load.
I almost bought some of that but the video was going to be too long as it was.
All done with videos
Great video but I failed to catch the range of the ballistic gel test. Thanks and keep up the good work
Thanks for the good video. You’re in our prayers
Great analysis, George. I couldn't have summed it up any better. :)

really enjoyed this video, thanks for that !
I think now that you have a ton of 158Gr American Eagle I would test that. Federal might call it a target load but a lot of people hunt with 158Gr JSP I have carried them while hunting and I have carried 158Gr Speer Gold Dot as well but haven't needed it yet
Fun video! Always enjoy them.
Thanks for watching!
Merry Christmas, Prayers to you and your family 🎁🎄🎁

Thanks! It really felt good to post a new video
What distance were you shooting from? Curious how the Barnes XPBs would do at longer range once they've slowed down a bit.
Great video George. Glad to see you again. Hope things are going well for your wife and you both are in our thoughts and prayers. Which ammo did you use for the hogs?
I used hand loads topped with the 158 grain xtp from Hornady
@@TargetSuite Gotta love the XTP. It always works well. I’ve heard the American Eagle 158 is a good hunting round, but I’ve never used it personally. But I have my new Marlin sighted in with it for this year’s deer season. Will let ya know how it performs. Thanks for all the hard work you do with putting out this great content for all of us.
Yes. Please let me know how that ammo performs. And of course that will mean you were successful which is a big plus😉
@@TargetSuite Will do my friend.
I'm disappointed you didn't test the Winchester Supreme 180 grain hollow point ammo.
i couldnt quite get what brand peep site you said was on the top eject..im getting older too but still love my 3o-30 and my rossi 357 i bought in 1996..the woods great walnut and that things built like a tank..plus it lets me carry my revolver in 357 as a back up when in swamps and deep woods.
That is a Marble Arms Bullseye sight.
Thanks for the video
Edit very fun video
Thanks for watching!
if you can find some, try some speer deep curl 158's. Curious how they do as the ones I shoot in 44 mag are great.
What was the distance you shot the gel?
The federal load is called a "target" load because some knucklehead will climb all over Federal because there was only a little deformation out of his 2" revolver on milk jugs. If you avoid Texas heart shots, regardless of bullet, it will work just fine on deer. Just be realistic about the distances for which a 357 carbine is useful.
Thanks for your comment! Keeping your distances appropriate for the gun you are hunting with is crucial. Especially if you're using a handgun cartridge. Thanks again!
Appreciate ya! Have a nice day.
👍👍
The Fed was impressive . And cheap . Have a blessed one .
Yes it was. Good to hear from you Spencer!
It looks like that middle America ammo supplier is almost giving away the Norma .357 mag target ammo.
Yes, and I bought a bunch of it! A big bunch.
It would be interesting to see how the 170 grain Speer DCSP would do, but I don't believe anyone has a factory load.
That does sound like a winner!
Guess I've never seen these rounds shot thru a rifle length barrel, as these results are nothing like what a short handgun barrel has
Yep. That extra barrel length really boosts the performance!
Great, very analytical video.
Thanks for your feedback!
What are the best loads if a revolver is used?
That was fun.
I would love to see a video testing some hornady xtp 158gr vs 180gr handload that’s my current delema !
Great video !
Here in Canada I can’t get these high velocity choices of ammo.
All the 357 ammo is pistol ammo that peaks out at 1400 fps or less.
Put them through a carbine. It improves.
I’m in Alberta and did manage to get a couple offerings from buffalo bore but the Other pistol ammo measured at :
American Eagle 158 gr (1780-1810)
From 20”
Blaser aluminum 158= 1675fps
PPU 158= 1675
Still praying for y’all
Thank you!
Here's the link. It's an old video, so I may be a little longer winded😉
ua-cam.com/video/HoMTwOkt4yM/v-deo.html
@@TargetSuite no worries, the longer winded, the more I learn😁
Several projectiles I'd consider in various weight:
Swift A-frame, Hornady XTP, Speer Deep Curl.
Grizzly makes a 180 and 200 gr hardcast that would penetrate silly distances, but it wouldn't have quite the same shock energy transfer.
I love my Henry. 357 with a 16" barrel. Has taken everything I've gone after.
Question for you about the Marlin rifle. Did you have any trouble stuffing the cartridges into the tube? I got a new 1894 Marlin and it's all I can do to get more than a couple into it. Also the tip of the bullet seems to want to head down into the gate as opposed to forward into the tube. You too ?
Leave the tube loaded a few days. See if that helps.
@@casejasnoch2533 I try it.... with 4 cartridges ! I wonder if pulling the spring out and dropping 9 in there and then resecuring the spring will work?
@@upanchor I’m not sure about that.
I tried some Buffalo bore 140 barnes in my new ruger 1894 and it was screaming fast. Unfortunately 100 yard groups were measured in feet, not inches. Ouch.

Jerry Miculek reloading. Not too shabby.
Haha! Heck, I'm not worthy to pick up his brass😉
What distance to the gel packs and which has group potential, thank you
