My first son was a vaginal birth that SHOULD have been a C-Section. I was in labor for 32 hours and he was not dropping he ended up being vacuumed out and I got an episiotomy clear threw to the anus and left me with a RECTOVAGINAL FISTULA! This is where gas and fences uncontrollably come out of your vaginal due to a pin size hole (in my case) that forms in the recto-vaginal wall. If you google it, rectovaginal fistulas only occur in under developed countries, I delivered in Southern California. Took me 2 surgeries, 6 months and a specialist in Northern California to be fixed (since OBGYNs are not well versed in this type of repair). To this day I still have issues with my anus because of the damage done to my sphincter. My second son was a c-section and that was a WALK IN THE PARK compared to my horrific vaginal birth experience!

Are we talking only about the elective c sections vs vaginal birth? If not, and we are putting all the c section all together when it comes to studies and data about c section complications, we need to consider that most of the surgeries where such complications occurred were actually emergency sections that were needed BECAUSE of those reasons exactly, so the complications didn't appear during the elective section as a cause of the surgery itself, but the section was needed becauseof the complications before or during labour. Hope I explained myself correctly. I find it really unfair to compare all c sections , including the umergency section ( a lot of them happening because of complications of a vaginal birth actually ) with vaginal births that in some cases become a c section and get included automatically in the statistics as a c section complication because of the need to deliver the baby through surgery eventually. What I am basically saying, and all medical professionals know it's true , it's that the statistics are not correct and accurate when presenting and comparing an elective c section to a vaginal birth. Hopefully in the future we will have statistics that are actually accurate about elective sections ,and separately about emergency sections.

I would also have appreciated knowing wether these studies were based on US births or world wide which makes a lot of a difference, many countries do not have the advances we do here and I am referring to Csections specifically. Mortality a morbidity varies by country in my opinion.

I’m really confused why people say there’s less risk from a vaginal delivery when the risks for prolapse, incontenance, pelvic floor muscle detachment and post birth haemorrhage are higher than in c section, not too mention c section means avoiding vaginal tearing, episiotomy, forceps/vacuum or risks from emergency c section.

Just want to say for all the people that are super nervous about labor and delivery, it's going to be okay! You can absolutely do this, and it won't be as bad as you've imagined it, if you're anything like I was at least.
I had a very rough, and frankly traumatic birth (and the immediate post-partum period, like, the first day after a few pretty bad things happened too), and it still wasn't as scary as I imagined. Painful, of course, but not as scary as I had worked myself up to think it would be. Especially the epidural, that was infinitely easier to get put in than I thought.
So, just take a deep breathe, you'll get through it and it'll all be so, so worth it when they lay your baby on your chest.

Unfortunately, for some people, labor and delivery are far worse than they imagined. Just take a look at Sarah's video(s) in which her dear friend, Hailey from Naples, talks about the very traumatic birth of her firstborn. I am truly happy for you that despite a tough delivery, the birth of your child was still not as bad as you imagined it would be; however, I think it's a little....risky(?)... to project your own experience onto others by warning women that their experiences won't be as bad as they fear. You did put a tiny disclaimer in there, but I just thought it was important to mention that pregnant women need to be as mentally prepared for anything as possible. If you go into your birth telling yourself it won't be as bad as you're imagining, that could set you up for disaster. Of course, probably more often than not, you're right though! 🙌 I'm half-asleep right now, so forgive me if I am not doing a great job articulating. I put this video on last night & fell asleep immediately. I'm hoping to watch it during my toddler's first nap today 🤞Yes, ladies, you might still be watching Sarah's videos long after you give birth. Be prepared for that possibility 😉

@@You.Tube.Sucks. To be perfectly honest, what I imagined was pretty bad, I basically thought I was going to die or something or need massive transfusions, just crazy stuff that I was freaking out about the whole time. So, I think I had such ridiculously low expectations, that almost anything would end up better than what I was psyching myself out about.
But yeah, I still get what you're saying though, of course disaster can happen, but it doesn't help anyone to be constantly worried about the worst possible outcomes (which are statistically pretty rare) and having panic attacks and things like that. Preparing for anything (as calmly as possible) is, of course, a good idea for sure. I wouldn't want anyone thinking it's not possible for things to go wrong.
I was just trying to help the people that are like me and are having intense anxiety about it, when *most likely* it won't be that bad, statistically speaking, it's very unlikely. And it's good to be aware of that, I think. It's smart to make sure you understand what some of the really bad possibilities are, but also to know the actual likelihood of those things happening, so you're not sitting there thinking you have a 50% chance of bleeding to death or something, when that's less than a 1% chance.
I had hemorrhaged pretty about 6 hours after delivery, I think I lost a liter or blood or something, all in the space of a few minutes and there were nurses running around everywhere, the doctor had to rush over there, etc. and that was one of my big fears, but it still wasn't as bad as I imagined, because these doctors know pretty well how to go about dealing with that. So that's one example out of the bad things that happened.
So yeah, I wasn't trying to give people unrealistic expectations, just trying to calm some peoples nerves if I could, because the vast majority of people don't need to panic because it's very unlikely that anything terrible will happen. That was all I wanted to get across, maybe I could have done that in a better way though.

And just speaking from experience versus what I know about C-sections, you're really better off doing a vaginal birth unless there's a medical reason not to. I know it *seems* like it would be a lot easier (and in the moment it may be), but it comes with it's own set of risks, complications, etc. and I really, really don't think it's worth it unless it's necessary.
I mean, obviously it's up to you, I'm just giving you my two cents. Also, the second time around labor is usually a lot easier and a lot faster.

Thank you for this video. I would love to learn what to do to prevent a C-section. I had a very healthy pregnancy. However, they were watching my Placenta because it was just too close to the cervix area. The placenta actually moved 1.9 cm away from the cervix and we were so excited just .01 cm to go to be safe. Then like at 37 weeks they saw that the Placenta had moved closer toward the cervix and now they saw blood vessels running over the cervix area.🙄... I was so sad because it was my first birth and I had prepared (me and my husband did Bradley method classes) but I had a very positive C-section experience. The doctor was so warm and understanding of those things I was looking forward to with natural birth. He did everything he could to give me some of my wishes. He even let my husband pray in the room over the procedure once everyone was in place before they started. I was so nervous but It was a good experience and recovery was good. I hope that I do not have Placenta Previa again 🙏🏾 is there anything I can do to prevent this?

For all of those worried about tearing, what I have found from my personal experience is that the medical team plays a huge role in it… I had two vaginal births at the hospital with first and second degree tears, I was on my back and was instructed to put all my energy into pushing, BIG mistake. Next two babies were born at home, my midwife massaged the area and applied warm compresses, I was on my knees and didn’t have to push at all, my body pushed baby out easily, I didn’t tear at all.

Thank you for this video, I appreciated all the insight and it’s helped me solidify ny decision . However, for statistical purposes don’t you think that the number of risks we see in C sections could be Correlated with the fact that most high risk pregnancies need to be done via cesarean ? For example the statistic that more babies born by C section will require a stay in the NICU - maybe that’s mostly because those babies were on average more high risk to begin with? I think we should be comparing statistics in only healthy mothers in low risk pregnancies for both categories, but I think the ones used here were more general.

I had an emergency csection with my first and a Vbac with my second, both recoveries were difficult, unfortunately I had a severe 3rd degree tear with my Vbac so the recovery from that was sooooo much longer and traumatic! I had 3 blood transfusions with my Vbac, my baby and I almost died because his cord was so short and it ripped during delivery (not a complication I had ever heard of) so because of all that, I am choosing a csection for my third. I wish that there was a better job done in studies regarding these topics in separating out complications from EMERGENCY C-sections vs. ELECTIVE C-sections. Things like risks of stillborn babies, hemorrhaging, and especially death, etc. are going to be far, far lower.
Aside from this, I wish you talked more about how life changing and devastating many vaginal birth complications are. Imagine having to have a sex life or go out in public if you have fecal incontinence, which let's be honest, that's only going to happen with third or fourth degree tears, which don't happen doing a Cesarean. Many times, it can't be fixed. Not to mention, the risk for being institutionalized as an elderly adult exponentially increases when you have incontinence of any kind. What about all the complications from pelvic floor prolapse, broken bones/torn ligaments/pudendal nerve damage/etc. Take a look at any forum or birth trauma support group. It's pretty horrifying, and many, many women wish they'd known the complications of a vaginal birth because no one gives the risks for that.
This video barely began to describe how unsafe a vaginal birth is for a baby (which most mothers agree is the more important topic). Aside from shoulder dystocia, babies could have anoxic brain injuries, intracranial hemorrhages, Bell's palsy, be still born, etc. The risks during an ELECTIVE C-section are virtually none for the child.

And I had to beg them for a C section (they told me I could push for another hr even tho with each push her heart rate was a little low). I had to break it down to them that if I wasn’t making progress I wont at all. I had my C section in the end. I was so drowsy and felt high and tired. They had to tell me to open my eyes to look at my little baby girl. And then I found out that they almost forgot to call the father in after they sterilized the room and cause of that he didn’t get to cut the cord. I was so out of it that I couldn’t ask about him. They called him in before they took her weight and length tho. It wasn’t a wonderful experience but at least it’s an interesting story to tell our little girl. And that I got to try for a vaginal birth.

I had a c section with my first due to failure to progress. I was pushing for 4 hours, if not longer. And baby just wouldn’t come out. By the time they called the c section my water had been broken for 42 hours and I was at risk of infection. Plus I was absolutely exhausted and just could not push anymore. Baby ended up being pretty big (9lbs 10oz). My epidural ended up failing a bit during the csection so they had to put me under genera anesthesia 😢. Lost a little bit of blood but I don’t remember how much. Physical recovery wasn’t too bad but oh man, emotionally I was a wreck!! I would just sob in the hospital 😞 baby also couldn’t latch and I didn’t have milk, so I had to supplement which made me feel even more like a failure. It was rough. I did end up trying again at 5 weeks and we successfully breastfed till 18 months (don’t give up mamas!). It also took a while to bond with the baby, again making me feel like such a failure as a woman and mom. Anyway, long story short, I’m pregnant with my second and I have no idea whether to do an elective csection or try for a vbac. I’m terrified of those feelings of failure again if I try and then end up with a big baby stuck in the birthing canal again😪 my first labor was pretty traumatic and I’m just at a loss of what to choose 😞

I had an unplanned cesarean with my daughter with several complications too, milk took forever, baby wouldn’t latch, etc. Now I’m 12 weeks pregnant and my daughter is 15 months. My plan is to go for a VBAC because when I think of all the parts of the cesarean I hated, the pain getting up, uncontrollable shaking, vomiting after surgery, swollen body, etc. I think to myself, I can’t just SIGN UP for all of that again. What I hated most is part of EVERY cesarean. Even with the trauma taken out, it was still hard physically so if I end up with another, I’ll know I at least tried to avoid it.

My youngest desided to turn in the last week of pregnancy. She was side ways! Head on my right side and a hand or foot trying to come out first...... I really had no choice! If I could choose I definitely would choose normal birth, way less painfull and quicker recovery! One unexpected thing with a c-section that really stressed me out was that during surgery my arms were shaking uncontrollable! Definitely didn't expect that!

The statistics were very interesting and thank you for giving it to us! I think something to consider is that the c sections usually happen in emergency situations. Would be good to divide the statistics into elective and emergency c sections instead of putting it together. I hated my vaginal wish it was a c section

Anna Noronha my baby was stuck after 3 hours of pushing and his heart rate rapidly increased, they had to get him out instantly so they used forceps and I got an episodimy (sorry incorrect spelling). My epidural ran out because I pushed for so long so I felt it all. After birth my placenta got stuck in my cervix, which was extremely painful and I had post pardum bleeding loss. It was very traumatic I would take a controlled operation ANY DAY over the unknown and the unbelievable pain from vaginal.

Victoria Black Aww! I’m so sorry that happened! I can’t imagine how much pain you endured. I had a cesarean with complications. I was induced for high blood pressure, it had been over 36 hours and my daughter had passed meconium, I had a uterine infection, a fever, we both had heart rate issues, and I couldn’t get past a 5-6 and my cervix was actually swelling. So they did the operation and after I hemorrhaged so we needed two blood transfusions but I reacted to the second bag so they had to cut it off. Then I didn’t get discharged for 4 days because my blood pressure was too high and I had tachycardia and no milk. My daughter never latched after due to a bunch of reasons but her neck was very right and the torticolis made breastfeeding tough for her. So I just pumped for months. Birth trauma is tough. I really desire a normal birth experience now. I thought your comment was so interesting because when we were in counseling I did a lot of research and something I learned is that a lot of people assume ALL cesareans are traumatic and ALL vaginal births are fine but that just isn’t true. Some cesareans can be healing and calm and like you mentioned, a complicated vaginal birth can be just as heartbreaking. Thanks for sharing your experience.

I had shoulder dystocia with my son and I won’t lie in the moment it was terrifying. He ended up having next to no blood sugar and needed antibiotics so he landed in the NICU for a week. I’ll never forget being wheeled into the NICU and watching them hook him up to what felt like a million wires and listening to the nurses tend to a baby girl who was coding on the other side of the curtain. All while my mask filled with snot and tears. (Thanks Covid. They wouldn’t even let my husband in until his test came back negative... which took over 18 hours)
And yeah it sucked. But I wish I knew or at least had taken time to think about how in a month it would all just feel like a bad dream. Even though that NICU stay felt like it would never end and nobody would admit we were close to taking him home until they told us to put him in the car seat, it did end. Kids bounce back and recover. If you look at my now 13 pound chunky boy you’d never know what happened. There’s life after delivery and hospitals. It might take help to get back to feeling ok and feeling like yourself but it happens. Life moves on and there’s happiness ahead.

I’ve had 3 vaginal deliveries, torn each time significantly, but my last birth my baby had shoulder dystocia so severely that she was stuck for 14 minutes and died during delivery. I was always one to be pro natural birth, but I am highly considering a c section for this 4th pregnancy, I think the risk is too great and honestly I’m scared to even have to go through a labor/delivery again after everything my husband and I went through and I know the doctors are nervous for me to have a natural birth after that experience. I think this is one of those instances where a c section is “elective” but necessary for mom and baby’s health

There are so so many other risks to vaginal delivery that were not covered, especially when using assistive devices --to the mother not baby. Also, generally speaking the people given the choice between vaginal or cesarean (i.e. in the scenario of a breech baby) there are significantly more risks to the baby for a vaginal delivery than cesarean. Also a lot of the stats you mentioned about maternal mortality do not apply here. Yes of course higher mortality with cesarean because there's the conflating issue that it was likely done in an emergent situation and that was likely the cause of death not the surgery. This video is for someone who has the foresight to make the decision between the two so that statistic obviously would not be relevant.

I went from vaginal to c section back to vaginal (cause he came out on his own lol) my vaginal lead to terrible tearing internally external i was a 2nd degree. Ended up with next day medical intervention for repairing the internal tears since the packing didn't stop the bleeding after several hours. I ended up having very minimal post partum bleeding which I was told was okay (I had always had horrible periods and with hyperplasia hemorrhaging) so I was surprised. I also ended up dealing with failure to produce any colostrum/milk despite interventions tried with a consultant. then diagnosed with post partum thyroiditis about 9 months after. would love to see a video on these crazy rare things that can happen that aren't talked about. I know all along I was told don't worry its okay but I drove myself into a severe anxiety because things weren't okay to me.

One of the things I did NOT want was a c-section with my first baby. I had a healthy pregnancy...totally normal. Went into labour on my own at 40 weeks . Labor for 24 hours got to 10 cm dilated. Then ended up with a C-section because the baby wouldn't come down 😫 sooo frustrating. The doctor I had was apparently known for encouraging c-sections so that was extremely frustrating. I had no infections or anything after the surgery and everything was fine...I healed fine.. pretty much can't see the scar. But every once in a while I was still feel pain in my left side from where incision was and my baby was born 15 months ago. It makes me nervous to have a second baby because I REALLy don't want to c-section again. I think I'd honestly take vaginal tearing over a section?! But I guess I can't speak to that. I also I feel like some people want to have a C-section because they think they don't "leak" "incontinence" etc... but I find that just kind of happens with age because I'm still experiencing that after I had a baby via section? One thing I DIDN'T expect after the C-section to was just not be able to get around very well. Like not being able to roll over in your sleep very... well not being able to sit on the toilet and not being able to get in and out of chairs, vehicles etc. I'm assuming it wouldn't be as bad if you had a vaginal birth ?? 🤔 soo much info! Either way - be informed and stand up for yourself and your baby! Great video!!! Why doesn't UA-cam have a "love" button yet 😘

    • @DeliveringJoyMD
      @DeliveringJoyMD 4 роки тому +7

Kæla Brown No, actually the C-section rate in US is hanging out right at about 34 percent for the past 5 years. There is a nationwide initiative to reduce the 1st time (primary) Cesarean delivery rate BECAUSE of the risk of complications. Many cesareans can probably be prevented if OB wasn’t such a high liability specialty. OBs do A LOT of c-sections just based off the fact that we cannot defend ourselves if the baby has a poor outcome like shoulder dystocia for a bigger baby or cerebral palsy in a baby with an abnormal heart tracing or a mama/baby with and infection from prolonged labor... the list goes on.
If we really want to change the unnecessary c-section rate, we have to change the laws around lawsuits, because right now the majority of OBs and hospitals are practicing CYA (cover your ass) medicine and not evidenced based medicine because everyone wants to avoid million dollars lawsuits and bad press.

Because for some women an emergency cesarean was so traumatic they cannot imagine having another. The only way to avoid an unplanned or emergency cesarean is to schedule one. I’ve had an unplanned cesarean after a long labor with complications before and after the birth. Although I really, really want a VBAC, I have friends who chose the scheduled route. Doctors sometimes counsel patients to believe that a repeat is safer because they’re so afraid of ruptures. All I’m trying to say is, it’s complicated.

My baby also had injuries from the vacuum. Due to this, I was offered a cesarean for this delivery. I am still trying to make up my mind but leaning towards another vaginal. When in the heat of the moment, I was not given any risks of either, more so persuaded by the nurses on which decision to make. Because of this, my aim is to educate myself of every type of intervention that could be offered before time comes to deliver in August.

In other words, the correlational relationship may not be a useful one to mention/identify because healthy pregnancies/deliveries aren’t usually offered the option for c-section, but every surgery is dangerous. We live in a microwave society where unnecessary surgeries are common so it is easy to lose sight of that important context- not to mention that there’s 6 or so layers of tissue that must be cut through to retrieve the baby. It is a pretty serious intervention.

A repeat cesarean that is not medically indicated IS unnecessary surgery plain and simple. I’m going for a VBAC this pregnancy because I can’t just sign up for an invasive surgery that might not be necessary.

Thank you for this video! I will likely need a transabdominal cerclage for any future pregnancy and I have been agonising over the decision to have c-sections for all future births. I could opt for a vaginal cerclage and vaginal birth, but it would give my babies a much lower survival rate. This video helped to clarify some things.

If a baby is stuck on the pelvic bone, and you can't push anymore, why would they choose forcepts over a c-section? Is it purely for the mothers benefit? Is it safer for the baby? I only ask because this was my situation. They had the room prepared and ready for me, but I ended up being able to push her out on my own (27 hour labor, 3 hours pushing, her hearbeat did great the whole time). From what they told me about the risks for her, I would of preferred a c-section even if it's harder on my body.

This was not mentioned at all. My son was being strangled by his cord, I had a vacuum assist, and it resulted in a third degree tear that was not only hellishly painful to heal, but it has permanently damaged my anus. My son is healthy, thank goodness, but my anus is no longer round, it is slit shaped and leaks sometimes. The only way to fix it is surgery. I've spoken with others who experienced third degree tears, I do NOT believe that the incidence is only 3%.

It's okay. I'm having my second c-section on December 7th this year. It's not that scary. Vaginal birth scares me more personally. It would be great if I could experience it, but there is no way since there was only 8 months between my pregnancies. I hope everything goes/went okay! If it helps, csections pose less risk to baby!

Your videos have been my FAVORITE during pregnancy and helped empower me to make decisions on my options giving birth. I had a c section which went as well as c sections could go 😃, but during a shift change a team of Dr's bullied me into starting petocin after I refused for almost 24 hrs . My fear was that my baby's perfect heartrate would begin to show signs of distress once started. I asked if I saw changes I did not like could they stop the petocin and was told "it doesn't work like that". Do you have any advice on patient rights in refusing treatment? I flexed & flowed 😉but got forced into a decision that should have been easy to stop once things went from great to troubled.

Thank you for this very informative video. I had a C-section with my first girl 22 months ago, it was programed because my girl had a cervical cystic lymphangioma and they were concerned that the cyst could compress her airways or explode. I am know 37 weeks and 6 days with my second girl, my pregnancy went good -thanks God-, and my doctor told me that i could have a vbac but my cervix is very closed :'(, and she gived me a chance until 20 October, wish me luck

Thank you for sharing this information. It is very informative. I am curious to know how different the risk statistics are between an elective c section and an emergency c section. Do you have any information on this?
I feel like the emergency component associated with many c sections definitely raises the risk factor. For those trying to decide ahead of time whether to have a vaginal or c section delivery, I feel like it would be super helpful to have some stats that don't include the emergency component.

Emergency C-section is a very broad term though, it could be a life threatening event or just a precautionary situation, mine would be considered an emergency C-section but me and baby were never in danger

Small town problems, my first baby was an emergency csection. So because i live in a small town i am stuck doing planned csections. Due to limited staff if something went wrong during vaginal birth. So my dreams of all natural was ripped from me lmao.
